Abstract:Carbon nanofibers as constructed from various one-dimensional carbon nanostructure, such as sp(3) diamond nanowire, sp(2) carbon nanotubes, and carbyne, have received enormous interest from both scientific and engineering communities. The newly synthesized nanostructure carbon nanothreads (C_NTH) show superior properties and make them ideal building blocks for high-performance carbon nanofibers. This work systematically investigates the torsional properties of C_NTH bundles through high-throughput large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that the torsional behavior of C_NTH bundles depends strongly on the loading direction. By adjusting the enantiomer ratios, we can effectively tune the mechanical properties of the bundle structure, including the strain energy density, elastic limit, and torsional rigidity. Benefiting from their rich structural varieties, this work suggests that carbon nanothreads are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance carbon nanofiber.

Abstract:We report herein the regioselective synthesis of all-carbon lemniscular nanohoops bis-po-CC and bis-pm-TC by the rational control of ring closures at the different positions of planar chiral tetrasubstituted [2.2]paracyclophane. Topological analyses reveal that bis-pm-TC is topological chiral while bis-po-CC is topologically achiral. X-ray crystal analysis demonstrates that bis-pm-TC adopts a lemniscular conformation with a contiguous conjugation. CD and CPL measurements further reveal that the chiroptical properties of bis-pm-TC are obviously different from those of bis-po-CC due to the different topological chirality.

Abstract:The chemical modification of the achiral carbon nanohoops to break the symmetry will result in inherently chiral structures with interesting optical properties. Herein, we report two novel pi-extended chiral macrocycles, cyclo[10]paraphenylene-pyrene ([10]CPP-2Pyrene) and cyclo[10]paraphenylene-hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene ([10]CPP-2HBC). The large substituents on the nanohoop peripheries effectively prevented free rotation and the racemization process. The conformation of each enantiomer is stable enough to be resolved by recycling HPLC.
Polar Superhelices in Ferroelectric Chiral Nanosprings

Abstract:Topological objects of nontrivial spin or dipolar field textures, such as skyrmions, merons, and vortices, interacting with applied external fields in ferroic materials are of great scientific interest as an intriguing playground of unique physical phenomena and novel technological paradigms. The quest for new topological configurations of such swirling field textures has primarily been done for magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, while the absence of such intrinsic chiral interactions among electric dipoles left ferroelectrics aside in this quest. Here, we demonstrate that a helical polarization coiled into another helix, namely a polar superhelix, can be extrinsically stabilized in ferroelectric nanosprings. The interplay between dipolar interactions confined in the chiral geometry and the complex strain field of mixed bending and twisting induces the superhelical configuration of electric polarization. The geometrical structure of the polar superhelix gives rise to electric chiralities at two different length scales and the coexistence of three order parameters, i.e., polarization, toroidization, and hypertoroidization, both of which can be manipulated by homogeneous electric and/or mechanical fields. Our work therefore provides a new geometrical configuration of swirling dipolar fields, which offers the possibility of multiple order-parameters, and electromechanically controllable dipolar chiralities and associated electro-optical responses.
Self-ordering of Nontrivial Topological Polarization Structures in Nanoporous Ferroelectrics.

Abstract:Topological field structures, such as skyrmions, merons, and vortices, are important features found in ordered systems with spontaneously broken symmetry. A plethora of topological field structures have been discovered in magnetic and ordered soft matter systems due to the presence of inherent chiral interactions, and this has provided a fruitful platform for unearthing additional groundbreaking functionalities. However, despite being one of the most important classes of ordered systems, ferroelectrics scarcely form topological polarization structures due to their lack of intrinsic chiral interactions. In the present study, we demonstrate using multiphysics phase-field modelling based on the Ginzburg-Landau theory that a rich assortment of nontrivial topological polarization structures, including hedgehogs, antivortices, multidirectional vortices, and vortex arrays, can be spontaneously formed in three-dimensional nanoporous ferroelectric structures. We realize that confining ferroelectrics to trivial geometries that are incompatible with the orientation symmetry may impose extrinsic frustration to the polarization field through the enhancement of depolarization fields at free porous surfaces. This frustration gives rise to symmetry breaking, resulting in the formation of nontrivial topological polarization structures as the ground state. We further topologically characterize the local accommodation of polarization structures by viewing them in a new perspective, in which polarization ordering can be mapped on the order parameter space, according to the topological theory of defects and homotopy theory. The results indicate that the nanoporous structures contain composite topological objects composed of two or more elementary topological polarization structures. The present study therefore offers a playground for exploring novel physical phenomena in ferroelectric systems as well as a novel nanoelectronics characterization platform for future topology-based nanotechnologies.
Discovery of topological chiral crystals with helicoid arc states

Abstract:The quantum behaviour of electrons in materials lays the foundation for modern electronic and information technology. Quantum materials with novel electronic and optical properties have been proposed as the next frontier, but much remains to be discovered to actualize the promise. Here we report the first observation of topological quantum properties of chiral crystals in the RhSi family. We demonsrate that this material hosts novel phase of matter exhibiting nearly ideal topological surface properties that emerge as a consequence of the crystals' structural chirality or handedness. We also demonstrate that the electrons on the surface of this crystal show a highly unusual helicoid structure that spirals around two high-symmetry momenta signalling its topological electronic chirality. Such helicoid Fermi arcs on the surface experimentally characterize the topological charges of $\pm{2}$, which arise from the bulk chiral fermions. The existence of bulk high-fold degenerate fermions are guaranteed by the crystal symmetries, however, in order to determine the topological charge in the chiral crystals it is essential to identify and study the helical arc states. Remarkably, these topological conductors we discovered exhibit helical Fermi arcs which are of length $\pi$, stretching across the entire Brillouin zone and orders of magnitude larger than those found in all known Weyl semimetals. Our results demonstrate novel electronic topological state of matter on a structurally chiral crystal featuring helicoid Fermi arc surface states. The exotic electronic chiral fermion state realised in these materials can be used to detect a quantised photogalvanic optical response or the chiral magnetic effect and its optical version in future devices as described by G. In this work, we reported the synthesis of [4n]Möbius conjugated all-carbon nanohoops ([5]H-[7,8]CPPs) by utilizing a [5]helicene unit as a hidden writhe and a masked aromatic unit to overcome the strain inherited from Möbius topology. X-ray analysis revealed that [5]H-[7,8]CPPs contain a [5]helicene moiety and an oligoparaphenylene unit, and display a Möbius topology. Photophysical investigations demonstrated that [5]H-[7,8]CPPs exhibited moderately high fluorescence quantum yields, which are significantly higher than those of pristine [5]helicene and [7,8]CPPs. Chiropti-cal studies revealed that [5]H-[7,8]CPPs displayed an obvious Cotton effect in circular dichroism and bright circularly polar-ized luminescence, indicating that the chirality of [5]helicene was efficiently transferred to the overall carbon nanohoops. Importantly, theoretical investigations reveal that, though possessing a 4n π-electron array, such all-carbon nanohoops are fully conjugated systems with Hückel aromaticity. Abstract:Abstract Precise control over the size and shape of graphene nanostructures allows engineering spin-polarized edge and topological states, representing a novel source of non-conventional π -magnetism with promising applications in quantum spintronics. A prerequisite for their emergence is the existence of robust gapped phases, which are difficult to find in extended graphene systems. Here we show that semi-metallic chiral GNRs (chGNRs) narrowed down to nanometer widths undergo a topological phase transition. We fabricated atomically precise chGNRs of different chirality and size by on surface synthesis using predesigned molecular precursors. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and theory simulations, we follow the evolution of topological properties and bulk band gap depending on the width, length, and chirality of chGNRs. Our findings represent a new platform for producing topologically protected spin states and demonstrate the potential of connecting chiral edge and defect structure with band engineering.

Abstract:Two helical carbon nanohoops, [7]CPPNap1,5 and [7]CPPAn1,5, which can be viewed as finite molecular models of chiral [9,7] or [10,6]CNTs with different chiral angles were designed and synthesized. The structures were confirmed by HR-MS, NMR, and X-ray diffraction analysis ([7]CPPNap1,5 only). Changing the connection positions from 2,6-linkage to 1,5-linkage with the acene in the cyclic structure makes the racemization process easier through fast rotation of the acene around the C-C single bonds as disclosed by transition-state calculations. The ring stains were calculated and further visualized to provide the stain distributions. Photophysical investigations revealed that acene-inserted carbon nanohoops showed multiple and widened absorption profiles with non-forbidden S1 absorptions.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical study on the optical properties of carbon nanobelts with zigzag and armchair edges, as well as interlocked carbon nanobelts for chirality. The results demonstrate that two photon absorption (TPA) and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) techniques can effectively differentiate carbon nanoribbons with different boundaries, revealing their relationship and distinguishing features. The findings from this research contribute to a better comprehension of carbon nanoribbons, mechanically interlocked molecules, and chirality.

Abstract:Novel topological phases of matter are fruitful platforms for the discovery of unconventional electromagnetic phenomena. Higher-fold topology is one example, where the low-energy description goes beyond standard model analogs. Despite intensive experimental studies, conclusive evidence remains elusive for the multigap topological nature of higher-fold chiral fermions. In this Letter, we leverage a combination of fine-tuned chemical engineering and photoemission spectroscopy with photon energy contrast to discover the higher-fold topology of a chiral crystal. We identify all bulk branches of a higher-fold chiral fermion for the first time, critically important for allowing us to explore unique Fermi arc surface states in multiple interband gaps, which exhibit an emergent ladder structure. Through designer chemical gating of the samples in combination with our measurements, we uncover an unprecedented multigap bulk boundary correspondence. Our demonstration of multigap electronic topology will propel future research on unconventional topological responses.

Here we report the first observation of topological quantum properties of chiral crystals<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1037-2#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1037-2#ref-CR7">7</a> in the RhSi family. We find that this material class hosts a quantum phase of matter that exhibits nearly ideal topological surface properties originating from the crystals' structural chirality. Electrons on the surface of these crystals show a highly unusual helicoid fermionic structure that spirals around two high-symmetry momenta, indicating electronic topological chirality. The existence of bulk multiply degenerate band fermions is guaranteed by the crystal symmetries; however, to determine the topological invariant or charge in these chiral crystals, it is essential to identify and study the helicoid topology of the arc states. The helicoid arcs that we observe on the surface characterize the topological charges of ±2, which arise from bulk higher-spin chiral fermions. These topological conductors exhibit giant Fermi arcs of maximum length (π), which are orders of magnitude larger than those found in known chiral Weyl fermion semimetals<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1037-2#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1037-2#ref-CR11">11</a>. Our results demonstrate an electronic topological state of matter on structurally chiral crystals featuring helicoid-arc quantum states. Such exotic multifold chiral fermion semimetal states could be used to detect a quantized photogalvanic optical response, the chiral magnetic effect and other optoelectronic phenomena predicted for this class of materials<a href="/articles/s41586-019-1037-2#ref-CR6">6</a>.

Abstract:Chiral nanoporous nanoarchitectures exhibit potential applications in various fields including chiral separation, sensing and catalysis. Two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular chemistry offers novel methods to build chiral nanoporous networks from achiral molecules. Herein, we report a series of chiral nanoporous networks built by an achiral precursor molecule via a stepwise annealing strategy on Ag(100). The nanoporous network morphologies and structural details are characterized by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It is revealed that all vertices within networks are chiral. These chiral vertices are either dimeric, trimeric, or tetrameric. The connection of these chiral vertices gives rise to diverse chiral nanopores with varying shapes and sizes. A strict chirality correlation between nanopores and their vertices is determined. Specifically, enantiomeric vertices of one-pair nanopore enantiomers are always in identical type but opposite handedness. This work serves as a model to investigate the influence of vertex chirality on nanopore chirality of a supramolecular matrix. The attained chiral nanopores could potentially be utilized as templates for surface reaction, chiral recognition, etc. The mirror-symmetric silver adatoms clusters dictated by chiral nanopore are discerned.

Abstract:Circuit topology employs fundamental units of entanglement, known as soft contacts, for constructing knots from the bottom up, utilising circuit topology relations, namely parallel, series, cross, and concerted relations. In this article, we further develop this approach to facilitate the analysis of chirality, which is a significant quantity in polymer chemistry. To achieve this, we translate the circuit topology approach to knot engineering into a braid-theoretic framework. This enables us to calculate the Jones polynomial for all possible binary combinations of contacts in cross or concerted relations and to show that, for series and parallel relations, the polynomial factorises. Our results demonstrate that the Jones polynomial provides a powerful tool for analysing the chirality of molecular knots constructed using circuit topology. Abstract:Topologically complex molecules are poised to play a crucial role in the future of materials science, providing control over entanglement at the smallest possible scale. Discovery of new topological constructs and robust strategies for their synthesis are central to expanding the field. Here a new topological class of molecules, named perplexanes, are identified that contain an unusual combination of interlocking and interweaving that defies traditional topological descriptors. Two nanocarbon perplexanes are rationally synthesized in high yield using reversible zirconocene coupling of alkynes. This dynamic C-C bond formation facilitates entanglement under thermodynamic control, enabling the use of simple precursors without the need for strong templating or preassembly. This provides a new toolkit for assembling topologically complex nanocarbons that should be generalizable to a wide range of other topologies.
