Abstract:The risk assessment of hazardous substances has become increasingly important for the efficient prevention and management of various diseases or accidents caused by increased amounts of hazardous substances in the workplace. In this study, risk assessment was conducted for 36 kinds of hazardous substances requiring management by using qualitative and quantitative risk assessments. Qualitative risk assessment was performed by multiplying the exposure level class by the hazard class according to the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency’s (KOSHA) Chemical Hazard Risk Management (CHARM). The quantitative risk assessment was followed by a four-step risk assessment system presented in the Guidelines for Hazard Risk Assessment of Chemicals (KOSHA GUIDE W-6-2016). In the quantitative assessments, we presented a new method of classifying risk levels into four steps, much like qualitative assessments. In this study, the quantitative risk assessment was considered difficult to predict through qualitative risk assessment. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a quantitative risk assessment after a qualitative risk assessment for a higher level of risk assessment.

Evaluation of Occupational Health Risk Management and Performance in China: A Case Study of Gas Station Workers

Abstract:China has a large number of gas stations, with which thousands of workers are associated. There is abundant online literature documenting the various occupational health risks these workers face. However, this literature has many flaws to address, and it falls short of suggesting measures to manage these risks. This study strives to fill that gap, and aims to improve the occupational health of gas station workers through comprehensive risk management and performance analysis. To this end, a reasonable volume of reliable data, i.e., 208 completed questionnaires, were analyzed through current statistical routines, viz., fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). These methods were employed to hierarchically organize the main factors and sub-factors of physical risk management, chemical risk management, biological risk management, physiological risk management and psychological risk management according to their appraised importance, and screen out the risk management stratagem for priority improvement. Research findings reveal that chemical risk and biological risk response schemes have the lowest performance, and need to be prioritized for improvement. Furthermore, this study argues that we can safeguard the occupational health of gas station workers through appropriate risk management strategies. It also elaborates on implications, limitations and future research directions.
Occupational Disease Hazards Evaluation in an Enterprise by a Semi-Quantitative Risk Assessment Method

Abstract:[Objective]To evaluate the effect of an occupational hazards control program by a risk assessment model in a battery enterprise and to provide evidence for the enterprise's reform.[Methods]A semi-quantitative risk assessment designed for occupational exposure to chemicals in Singapore was applied to systemically identify chemical hazards in the selected enterprise,to grade related risk level by chemical exposure possibility,and to develop corresponding management strategy.[Results]The chemical hazards in this enterprise were lead dust,lead fume,and sulfuric acids.The time-weighted average concentration values of lead dust,lead fume,and sulfuric acids were 0.025-0.030mg/m3,0.019-0.035mg/m3,and 0.260mg/m3,respectively.All estimated hazard classes were 5.The exposure level for lead dust and lead fume at the assembling posts was 3,2 for lead fume at the slicing posts,and 3 for sulfuric acid at the formation posts.[Conclusion]For all operating positions,the risk levels are defined as severe or medium.According to the risk classification of work posts,it is important to focus on the comprehensive prevention and control of occupational hazards,as well as regularly risk assessments.

Abstract:Objective to take the occupational health risk assessment in a resin anchorage production workshop by three models for occupational health risk assessment, and explore a suitable risk assessment model for this kind of production unit. Methods the occupational health status and main chemical hazard factors of a resin anchorage production workshop were investigated. Qualitative risk assessment and semi-quantitative risk assessment (contact limit ratio method and comprehensive index method) were used for risk assessment, and the results were compared and analysed. Results Comparing with comprehensive index method, the evaluation result of qualitative risk assessment and contact ratio method were closer to each other, but there was a big difference between the two methods in the determination of phthalic anhydride. Conclusion the three risk assessment methods had their own merits and demerits, the evaluation results were also different. The semi-quantitative risk assessment-contact limit ratio method is more suitable for the occupational risk assessment in resin anchorage production workshop.

Abstract:The study of risk assessment of dangerous chemicalss has attracted much attention in recent years. In this paper, a new method of risk assessment is developed. Besides the inherent risk, the accident derivation possibility that may be caused by the primary accident is considered together with the effect of emergency rescue action which may reduce the risk. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied in this research. The factors and the weights are specified with dozens of case analysis. The risk assessment results show good agreement with the real cases. It is also found that the effect of emergency rescue action is very important in risk assessment and should not be ignored.

Abstract:[Objective]To understand the status of occupational hazards in workplaces of dust and highly toxic enterprises in Huairou District of Beijing City,to offer technical support for improving workplace environment,and provide scientific evidence for supervision department.[Methods]According to relevant state standards and norms,the chemicals in workplaces environment and air dust samples were collected with gas sampler,atmospheric sampler,the dust sampler.Noise Spectrum Analyzer was used to detect on-site noise.[Results]An occupational hazards testing and evaluation was performed on 36 enterprises' workplace with dust and high toxic substances.A total of 893 samples were collected,including toxic chemical,physical factors and dust.Fourteen enterprises(38.9%) exceeded standards with 121 samples(13.5%) exceeded.[Conclusion]The occupational hazards levels exceeding standards in some enterprises of this district indicates that relevant department should pay more attention to occupational health,to strengthen supervision and education,to improve the control awareness of occupational diseases among enterprises and workers,to enhance management of occupational health,to promote standardization and institutionalization of occupational health management in workplace so as to prevent and control the occurrence of acute and chronic occupational diseases.
The prediction of occupational health risks of n-Hexane in small and micro enterprises within China's printing industry using five occupational health risk assessment models

Abstract:Background: Chronic n-Hexane poisoning is prevalent among workers in small and micro printing industries in China. Despite this, there is limited research on occupational health risk assessment in these sectors. Conducting comprehensive risk assessments at key positions and proposing effective countermeasures are essential. Methods: Data were collected from 84 key positions across 32 small and micro-sized printing enterprises. Air samples were tested for n-Hexane exposure levels in accordance with Chinese standards. Five risk assessment models were employed: COSHH, EPA, MOM, ICMM, and Technical Guide GBZ/T 289-2017 of China. The consistency of results across these models was analyzed. Results: Workers in 84 job positions were categorized into four exposure groups, with exposure to n-Hexane for 8-10 h daily, 5-6 days weekly. Most positions operated with low automation levels (96.9% in printing, 5.9% in oil blending, and 42.9% in pasting), while others were manual. Localized ventilation rates were notably low in oil blending (23.5%), cleaning (14.3%), and pasting (9.5%) groups. n-Hexane concentrations exceeded Chinese occupational limits in 15.6% of printing, 17.7% of oil blending, and 21.4% of cleaning groups. Risk assessment models identified over 60% of work groups as high risk. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found among the seven risk assessment methods. Consistency analysis revealed moderate agreement between the Chinese synthesis index and exposure index methods (k = 0.571, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The Chinese synthesis and exposure index methods from Technical Guide GBZ/T 289-2017 are practical and reliable for assessing n-Hexane exposure risks in small and micro printing enterprises. Cleaning and printing roles were found to be at the highest risk for n-Hexane exposure. These findings provide valuable insights for targeted risk management strategies to protect workers' health in the industry.

Abstract:Objective To explore and establish an appropriate occupational risk assessment model for energy -saving lamp industry in China,and further to provide reference for risk management.Methods Based on actual conditions on site of 3 different scale energy -saving lamp manufacture factories,Singapore exposure semi -quantitative evaluation methods was used to analyze and evaluate the harm of the work sites contacted with chemical factors,according to which can provide a proposal for risk management.Results The primary occupational chemical hazards in these 3 factories include carbon monoxide,carbon dioxide,aluminium oxide dust,butyl acetate,mercury metal(vapor)and cement dust(free SiO2 <10%).Mercury -injecting of the big scale one has medium risk besides all work sites have low risks or below.Conclusion This methods has confirmed the actual risk levels of the work sites,using the test data in work place,but has a shortage while the sites contacted with physical agents such as noise and heat.

Abstract:Occupational health and safety (OHS) is a multidisciplinary activity that aims to identify, evaluate, and control hazards arising in or from the workplace that may impair the health and well-being of workers. Assessing the risk of occupational hazards is one of pivotal steps to handle an OHS risk analysis problem. Many models and approaches for assessing the risk of occupational hazards have been proposed in previous studies. Nevertheless, few contributions are devoted to perform a comprehensive literature review of the researches on occupational health and safety risk assessment (OHSRA). Therefore, the aim of this research is to provide a comprehensive and systematic review of the OHSRA studies which intend to propose models and approaches for evaluating and prioritizing the risk of occupational hazards. To do so, 88 publications extracted from the Web of Science (WOS) database during the years of 2002–2022 were identified and reviewed. Based on the applied OHSRA models, the selected publications were divided into seven categories and analyzed in terms of risk criteria, risk criteria weighting methods, and risk assessment approaches. Besides, a bibliometric analysis was carried out based on the frequency of OHSRA methods, citation numbers, publication years, appeared journals, original countries, and application areas. This research affords scholars and practitioners effectively utilizing the OHSRA models to assess the risk of occupational hazards and provides valuable information for understanding current situations, research hotspots, and future research trends in the field of OHSRA.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the applicability of semi-quantitative risk assessment methods in wood furniture manufacturing companies. Methods: Two medium-sized wooden furniture manufactures were randomly selected as research objects, namely A company and B company. Used the Semi-Quantitative risk assessment method (the ratio method, the index method and the comprehensive method) in the "Guidelines for occupational health risk assessment of chemicals in the workplace" (GBZ/T 298-2017) to conduct occupational hygiene survey, occupational hazard factor testing and occupational health risk assessments for two wood furniture manufacturers from January to October 2018, and compared and analyzed the applicability of these three semi-quantitative risk assessment methods in wooden furniture manufacturing enterprises. Results: The occupational health status of A enterprises was worse than that of B enterprises, and the occupational health risk level was higher than that of B enterprises, and the risk level of A enterprise is 3~4, and the risk level of B enterprise is 2~3. The occupational health risk level obtained by the index method was consistent with the comprehensive method, while the risk level of some occupational disease hazards used the ratio method was inconsistent with the results of the index method and the comprehensive method. Compared with the index method and the comprehensive method, when E/OEL<0.5 or E/OEL≥2, there might be a certain fluctuation in the occupational health risk level obtained by the ratio method. Conclusion: The semi-quantitative risk assessment is more objective, comprehensive and flexible in the application of occupational health risk assessment, and can assess the occupational health risk level of chemical poisons in wood furniture manufacturing enterprises.

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the systems and actual practices of occupational safety and health risk management in China. Methods: First, we gathered basic information through a literature review using an academic search engine (Japan Medical Abstracts society, Pubmed, and Google Scholar), as well as a general search on the Internet. Next, we conducted field surveys at a graduate school for public health, providers of occupational health services (e.g. medical examinations, working environment measurements), and local workplaces of a Japanese construction machinery company in China. This information was analyzed in terms of legal framework, professional staff, working environment measurements, medical examinations, occupational diseases, and occupational health service providers. Results: Health and safety-related matters have become codified in Chinese workplaces as a result of safety laws and measures to prevent occupational diseases. While the country does have safety and hygiene officers, they lack official frameworks for occupational physicians and nursing professionals. The employers are not obligated to appoint medical professionals. While general medical examinations are not provided for under Chinese law, businesses are obligated to bring in external providers of occupational safety to perform special medical exams and working environment measurements. Occupational diseases are on the rise; pneumoconiosis comprises roughly 80% of cases. In addition, occupational health technical service providers have specialized staff and are not permitted to perform medical examinations or other services without government accreditation. Discussion/conclusion: There are great disparities in specialist knowledge about health and hygiene between company staff and external organizations, thus running the risk of corporate health and safety policies existing only on paper. This issue demands greater utilization of public health physicians in Chinese workplaces and support from Japanese professionals who understand how occupational safety and health risk management operate in China.

Abstract:A quantitative hierarchy method was established based on risk source grades and risk values of acute exposure,death and comprehensive health hazards.Risk values were obtained for the worst credible case by calculating the accident influence probability and health hazards at the present management level and under the local predictable meteorological conditions.This method was proven to be effective when used in assessment of the health risk from a chemical plant in Taiyuan City,Shanxi Province,where many liquid chlorine tanks were stored.The analysis of the accident influence probability,consequences and risk rose diagrams in all wind directions showed that the health risk from the atmospheric sources was closely related to the population distribution in the surrounding area.In the worst credible case,the characteristic wind direction was south,the comprehensive risk value reach a maximum of 4.88×10-6 and the risk source belonged to the extremely high grade(Grade Ⅰ).

Abstract:Objective To understand the occupational hazards at gas stations and analyze the deficiency of occupational health work in these gas station and finally provide evidence base for occupational health supervision authority to establish management system on occupational health in the gas stations. Methods 50 gas stations in 5 districts were selected randomly. The gasoline or benzene concentration at workplaces and the contents of benzene in the gasoline were measured with grab sampling and the occupational health work taken at the each gas station was asked with questionnaire. Results The occupational health work carried out at the gas station does not meet the requirement of the Law on Prevention of Occupational Disease of the People’s Republic of China. 5% of samples had a higher benzene concentration than exposure limits. 69.7% of gasoline samples can be detected benzene and some had very high concentration than regulated concentration. Conclusion The gas station shall be supervised by governmental agency in accordance with the Law on Prevention of Occupational Disease of the People’s Republic of China. The occupational health management for gas station should be established.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the control effect of occupational hazards in a High-voltage Switch Cabinet Company.Methods Occupational hygiene investigation,occupational hygiene detection,check-list method and occupational health examination were used for comprehensively assessing.Results The main occupational hazards were chemical poisons,dusts,and noise.All of the levels of chemical poisons were below the occupational exposure limits.On the sulfide spraying spot, the time weighted average concentration of dust was below the occupational exposure limit,while the instant concentration was above the occupational exposure limit.The noise level of four detecting spots exceeded the limit.Conclusions The protective measures of occupational hazards in this project still need to be improved.

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the petrochemical enterprise employees’ health risks,and assess its results.Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted. Physical examination data were compared and analyzed. Domestically prevalent software of health risk assessment was mainly used for early risk warning assessment of common chronic diseases among high-risk subjects.Results:High-risk subjects of different sex and age had discrepancy in disease risk for different kinds of diseases.Conclusion:Health risk assessment can be a core in health management services for effective management of chronic diseases among high-risk groups.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:This study was designed to conduct a retrospective and systematic occupational health risk assessment (OHRA) of enterprises that used benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) in Shanghai, China.METHODS:All data for the study were obtained from 1,705 occupational health examination and evaluation reports from 2013 to 2017, and a semiquantitative model following Chinese OHRA guidelines (GBZ/T 298-2017) was applied for the assessment.RESULTS:The selected enterprises using BTX were mainly involved in manufacturing of products. Using the exposure level method, health risk levels associated with exposure to BTX were classified as medium, negligible, or low. However, the risk levels associated with benzene and toluene were significantly different according to job types, with gluers and inkers exhibiting greater health risks. For the same job type, the health risk levels assessed using the comprehensive index method were higher than those using the exposure level method.CONCLUSION:Our OHRA reveals that workers who are exposed to BTX still face excessive health risk. Additionally, the risk level varied depending on job categories and exposure to specific chemicals. Therefore, additional control measures recommended by OHRA guidelines are essential to reduce worker exposure levels.

Abstract:Objective: Three occupational health risk assessment methods were used to assess the occupational health risk of noise exposed posts in an automobile manufacturing enterprise. According to the results, the selection of risk assessment methods and risk management of such occupational noise enterprises were provided. Methods: Form April to November 2021, The occupational health field survey was carried out in an automobile manufacturing industry in Tianjin. The occupational health MES risk assessment method, occupational health risk index risk assessment method and Australian occupational hazard risk assessment method were used to evaluate the occupational health risk of noise-exposed posts in this enterprise, and the evaluation results of different methods were analyzed and compared. Results: The average value of L(Aeq, 8 h) in the four workshops of automobile manufacturing industry was 82.95 dB (A) , and the noise detection exceeding rate was 22.41% (26/116) . The LAeq, 8h and exceeding rate noise of welding workshop were higher than those of other workshops (χ(2)=23.56, 32.94, P<0.01) . The three occupational health risk assessment methods have the same risk assessment results for the four major workshops. Conclusion: Occupational noise has certain potential hazards to workers in automobile manufacturing enterprises. Therefore, in the future work, corresponding organizational management measures should be taken to improve the working environment and reduce the actual exposure level of workers in order to protect the health of occupational workers.
