Abstract:The determination of formaldehyde is of paramount importance, as it is present in numerous locations throughout life. In this study, aminophenol-modified gold nanoparticles (ATP-AuNPs) with different relative positions of hydroxyl and amino groups were synthesized for the detection of formaldehyde. They were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy tests. The results demonstrated that the position plays a crucial role in the composites, which exhibit good stability when the sulfhydryl group and amino group transition from the para position to the neighboring position. Furthermore, the para position was identified as the optimal configuration for formaldehyde detection. When it was used to detect formaldehyde in ultrapure and Li River water, the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 1.03/1.15 mM, respectively. This work not only provides a novel ATP-AuNP sensor but also highlights its practical situations.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (FA) is a highly toxic carbonyl compound to both living organisms and the environment, which requires a rapid and sensitive detection method. The cost-effective paper-based fluorescent sensors are robust tools for FA detection while the immobilization of fluorescent probes onto paper substrates results in reduced sensitivity. To overcome these challenges, an intelligent hydrogel nanosensor was prepared by embedding an upconversion optical probe in the 3D porous polyacrylamide hydrogel for the multiplex chroma detection of FA. The hydrogel nanosensor provided a liquid-phase detection environment for the upconversion probe, ensuring the detection sensitivity compared to paper-based sensors. Moreover, the near-infrared excited UCNPs effectively avoided the background fluorescence generated by the hydrogel matrix under UV light, thus enhancing the precision of FA detection. The prepared hydrogel nanosensor exhibited fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode response for FA, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10 nM in fluorescent mode and 25 nM in colorimetric mode. Moreover, a portable sensing platform has been further developed to address practical requirements, enabling cost-effective and instant detection. This novel UCNPs-based hydrogel nanosensor provides a convenient and precise sensing strategy for the detection of hazardous substances in food, with the potential to promote the practical application of portable fluorescent sensing devices in food safety monitoring.

Abstract:A two-photon nanoparticle probe was designed and developed based on the principle of intermolecular interaction of the aggregation-induced locally excited emission luminescence mechanism. The probe has the advantages of simple synthesis, convenient use, strong atomic economy, good biocompatibility, and photobleaching resistance. It can produce a specific and sensitive response to formaldehyde, help detect FA in normal cells and cancer cells, and is expected to become a specific detection probe for FA in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Highly sensitive detection of formaldehyde (FA) is of great importance to protect human health against its adverse effect. Herein, we constructed copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with strong luminescence capable of rapid, sensitive, and visual detection of FA, which was self-assembled using D-penicillamine (DPA) as the protecting ligand. Common physical measurements were carried out to analyze the as-fabricated samples (DPA-Cu NCs). Experimental results revealed its strong red fluorescence (FL), large Stokes shift, and a long fluorescence lifetime. Furthermore, DPA-Cu NCs presented self-assembled aggregation-induced emission (SAIE) property and achieved a fluorescence quantum yield (FLQY) as high as 76.26% in the solid state. Notably, FA could quench the fluorescence of Cu NCs effectively. The possible quenching mechanism was attributed to static quenching. Moreover, a paper-based visual sensor was built by immobilizing the DPA-Cu NCs probe on the filter paper, which can achieve on-site detection of FA.

Abstract:Novel colorimetric and ratiometric fluorometric dual-mode N, P-co-doped carbon nanodots, BPEI-CDs, for highly sensitive and selective detection of formaldehyde (FA) were successfully prepared from N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid (PMIDA) and branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI). The treatment of FA caused a remarkable linear enhancement of ratiometric fluorescence (F501 nm/F408 nm) in a wide range of 0-40 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.47 μM (3σ/k), along with distinct color changes from colorless to light yellow. Mechanistic study shows that this electron-rich system, formed by the cooperative roles of N and P, promoted the FA-induced Schiff bases formation reaction, which contributed to the CD aggregation-induced emission (AIE) "turn-on" response and enhancement of π-conjugation-induced bathochromic behaviors. Furthermore, N, P-co-doped BPEI-CDs were successfully applied to the determination of FA in bean sprout samples. Using the standard addition method, the recoveries ranged from 96.9 to 101.8%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was in the range 2.23 to 3.21%. The application for intracellular FA sensing further verified that this novel nanoprobe may offer a new venue for the design of simple, low-cost, and sensitive biosensors. Graphical abstract.

Abstract:A simple and reliable method was developed by combining redox reaction with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the indirect detection of formaldehyde (FA). Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be generated from the reaction between the silver ammonia solution containing silver nanoclusters (AgNCs@Tollens) and FA, which can improve the SERS signal of rhodamine 6G (R6G). The detection principle was based on the enhancement of the SERS signal of R6G caused by the increase in the intensity of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) upon the reduction of AgNCs@Tollens by FA. This method exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of FA with a linear range from 5 mu M to 160 mu M and a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.5 mu M. The proposed method was successfully used for the detection of FA released from furniture panels with a recovery rate of 95-100%.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (FA), a carcinogenic potential toxic aldehyde, has attracted more and more attention in the domain of science. Less dose of FA can cause pain, emesia, somnolence and stupor, and uptake of large amounts of FA can cause death. To make sure that remains FA has no detrimental on human health, it is pivotal to control the FA level via early detection. Hence, to develop a rapid, sensitive and selective method for detection of sulfites is of great importance. Herein, a novel PET-based fluorescent probe MPAD with ultrafast detection time (6 min) and ultralow detection limit (20 nM) for formaldehyde (FA) detection was developed. Abstract:Formaldehyde (FA) can damage DNA, cause liver and kidney dysfunction, and ultimately lead to malignant tumors. Therefore, it is essential to develop a method that can conveniently detect FA with high detection sensitivity. Here, a responsive photonic hydrogel was prepared by embedding three-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) into amino-functionalized hydrogel to construct a colorimetric sensing film for FA. The amino groups on the polymer chains of the photonic hydrogel reacts with FA to increase the crosslinking density of the hydrogel, resulting in its volume shrinkage and a decrease in microsphere spacing of the PC. That causes the reflectance spectra blue-shift of more than 160 nm and color change from red to cyan for the optimized photonic hydrogel, achieving the sensitive, selective and colorimetric detection of FA. The constructed photonic hydrogel shows good accuracy and reliability for practical determination of FA in air and aquatic products, providing a new strategy for designing other target analytes responsive photonic hydrogels.

Abstract:Fluorescent nanoparticles were prepared by encapsulating carbon dots (CDs) within silica spheres and then modifying these spheres with amino groups (CD@SiO2-NH2). On the basis of the silver mirror reaction, Ag+ assembled on the surface of CD@SiO2-NH2 is reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by formaldehyde. The in-situ grown AgNPs cause a visually distinguishable fluorescence enhancement. This metal-enhanced effect was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic characterization, and the relevant conditions were optimized. CD@SiO2-NH2-Ag+ fluorescent probes were loaded onto nano-sponge pieces for the analysis of formaldehyde gas. The blue fluorescence emission (peaking at 466 nm) in response to formaldehyde is greatly enhanced (up to 5.2 times) over other species. There is a linear relationship between the fluorescence enhancement and formaldehyde gas concentration in the range of 10 ppb to 1 ppm, and the detection limit is 3 ppb. Abstract:Excessive levels of formaldehyde (FA) represent serious health risks. Aiming at the detection of formaldehyde content, this paper proposes a self-assembly method of proportional nanoprobes. Spherical nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by one-step condensation reaction between rhodamine B (RhB) and chitosan (CS). After CS was modified by RhB, the linear structure changed and self-assembled under the action of "hydrophilic/hydrophobic" to form a core-shell structure with a cavity structure. The hydrophobic small molecule probe N-Butyl-4-Hydrazo-1,8-Naphacticimide (NBHN) spontaneously entered into the hydrophobic cavity to form spherical particles Chitosan-Rhodamine ,8-Naphacticimide (CS–) with a size of about 60 nm. The hydroxyl groups on CS enrich formaldehyde through charge interaction, and promote the reaction of formaldehyde with NBHN, so that the probe can detect formaldehyde at a lower concentration (detection limit 87 nmol·L −1 ). The self-assembled nanoparticles significantly increased the response speed of NBHN (from 30 min to 10 min). After the reaction of NBHN with formaldehyde, the PET effect is released, the fluorescence transition from red to yellow of , and the visual fluorescence response effect to formaldehyde is significantly improved. With the help of smartphone color recognition software, we converted the color of the probe solution into RGB values to realize the quantitative and visual detection of formaldehyde. In addition, was used for the detection of FA in leather and air.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is one of the most important indoor air pollutants affecting human immune system, and causing various respiratory diseases and even certain cancers. Traditional formaldehyde detection technologies are bulky, expensive and difficult to maintain. Here, we report a colorimetric chemical sensing platform for fast (2 min) and sensitive detection (30 ppbv) of formaldehyde over a wide dynamic range (0-750 ppbv). The sensor can tolerate humidity variation from 5% to 90% and is immune of common interferents, such as CO2 (4%), SO2 (10 ppm), NO2 (125 ppbv), and O-3 (300 ppbv) in air. We also demonstrated continuous detection of formaldehyde on this sensing platform using disposable sensor chip.

Abstract:The noble metal-based electrochemical sensor design for efficient and stable formaldehyde(FA) detection is important ongoing research. In this paper, PtPd/Nafion/GCE is prepared by electrochemical cyclic voltammetry (CV) deposition method based on electrodepositing nanostructured platinum (Pt)-palladium (Pd) nanoparticles in Nafion film-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The influence of deposition parameters and chemical composition (atomic ratio of Pt and Pd) on the electrochemical behaviour of PtPd/Nafion/GCE has been investigated. PtPd/Nafion/GCE displays a remarked electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of FA and exhibits a linear relationship in the range of 10 to 5000 μM, with a detection limit of 3.3 μM in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. It is proved that the detection performance of PtPd/Nafion/GCE electrode is valuable for further application with low detection limit, wide linear range, favourable selectivity and high response.

Abstract:A dual-emissive 4d-4f Ag(I)-Eu(III) functionalized MOF nanocomposite was fabricated and utilized as a self-calibrating luminescent nanoprobe for detecting indoor formaldehyde (FA). The implantation of Ag+ ions can tune the dual-emissive characters of the material. FA can interact with the Ag+ ions and induce opposite luminescence behaviors of the two emitters in the singular molecular material, thus realizing its recognition. This nanoprobe for FA exhibits many merits, such as excellent selectivity, high sensitivity with a detection limit of 51 ppb, fast response, room-temperature testing ability, easy preparation and low cost. This is the first example of a MOF-implicated self-calibrated sensor for indoor FA detection.

Abstract:Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling, colorless, excitant gas that is carcinogenic to humans. It is frequently used in the interior of decorative materials such as wood paneling and carpets. Several epidemiological studies have shown that the increasing incidence of nasal and lung cancer is due to exposure to environmental formaldehyde. Thus, the rapid detection of formaldehyde with high sensitivity is vitally important for environmental monitoring and clinical diagnosis. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an analytical technique that can provide fingerprint information on target materials with a sensitivity even down to the single-molecule level. However, formaldehyde molecules have a low cross section for Raman scattering and extremely weak analyte–metal interactions, and are thus scarcely detectable with conventional SERS technology. In this paper, a porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) shell layer was grown in situ on gold nanostars (AuNSs) for capturing and altering the route taken by formaldehyde molecules. Compared with current SERS detection methods, these as-synthesized core–shell AuNS@ZIF-8 nanocomposites with special apertures can cause formaldehyde molecules to pass through the ZIF-8 channels to the metal surface. With the help of ZIF-8 shell layers, the SERS-active AuNS@ZIF-8 substrates display extremely high sensitivity to formaldehyde molecules, with the lowest detection level almost at parts per billion (ppb). This study may therefore provide the basis for a reliable SERS strategy for detecting small molecules, especially gas samples.

Abstract:Aldehydes are very common pollutants and many are possible human carcinogens. Herein, we report an easy-to-operate and low-cost method for discrimination of diverse aldehydes. Our colorimetric sensor array based on Tollens' reagent allows discrimination of ten kinds of aldehydes, showing a distinct color change from wine-red to deep yellow. In the presence of aldehydes, Ag shells are coated onto gold nanoparticles (GNPs) functionalized with diverse ligands (including bovine serum albumin, polyvinylpyrrolidone and l-cysteine), forming Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles. The sensor array has great capacity for differentiating between ten kinds of aldehydes by color change, with accuracy and specificity of over 88%. Under optimal conditions, there is good linear correlation between Euclidean distance and formaldehyde concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 000 mu M (R-2 = 0.9908). The sensor was successfully used to determine formaldehyde content in shrimp, with recovery of 85.8% to 114.82%. Our GNPs sensor shows good potential for fast, reliable identification of aldehydes in food.

Abstract:A highly sensitive and selective RGB color analysis for the detection of formaldehyde (FA) was developed by using a DNA functionalized gold nanoparticle (AuNPs-DNA) probe. When complementary oligonucleotides (oligo 2 and oligo 3) and a silver ion (Ag+) were added to the AuNPs-DNA solution, triplex DNA was formed, resulting in the aggregation of AuNPs, and accompanied by a solution color change from red to purple. With the addition of formaldehyde, it reacted with Ag+, decreased the stability of triplex DNA between AuNPs-DNA, induced the dispersion of AuNPs, and the color of AuNPs recovered to red. Therefore, the formaldehyde concentration could be estimated with the RGB (red, green, blue) values of the AuNP solution by using a smartphone application (APP). The R value of the system was proportional to the concentration of formaldehyde within the range of 0.23-4.50 mg L-1, with a detection limit of 0.14 mg L-1. The method has been successfully applied to detect the residues of formaldehyde in vegetable samples and has the potential of the on-site determination of formaldehyde.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (FA) is a harmful substance commonly found in the environment, so effective testing is essential. Consequently, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent probe, which is based on covalent post-synthetic modification (PSM) of UiO-66-NH2 by naphthylamide (NI). The combination of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the covalent PSM makes the probe with large amount of hydrazine group exposed on the surface, which results excellent FA sensing performance like an ultrafast response time (20 s) and a low detection limit of 0.167 μM. The presence of covalent bonds can lock the fluorophore and prevent strong π-π interactions to exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Further we confirmed that such probe can be applied to real water samples and portable test strip experiment. In addition, experimental evidence such as fluorescence lifetime decay curves suggest that the main mechanism of fluorescence quenching is Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET).

Abstract:Direct, in situ selective detection of intracellular formaldehyde (FA) is of great significance for understanding its function in FA-related diseases. Herein, red carbon dots (RCD) are reported as label-free two-photon fluorescent nanoprobes for detecting and imaging of FA. Upon addition of FA, the -NH2 groups of RCD could quickly and specially react with aldehydes to form Schiff base and then the strong fluorescence of RCD with blue-shift emission is recovery due to the destruction of the hydrogen bond interaction between RCD and water. In addition, the nanoprobes exhibit outstanding photostability, rapid response (<1 min), high sensitivity (similar to 9.9 mu mol/L) and excellent selectivity toward FA over other aldehyde group compounds. Notably, owing to the good cell-membrane permeability and biocompatibility, as well as the large two-photon absorption cross-section, the as-prepared RCD can be used as label-free nanoprobes for selectively detecting and imaging FA in living cells and zebrafishes through one-photon and two-photon excitation. Moreover, RCD could stain the tissue of zebrafishes at depths interval of up to 240 mu m under two-photon excitation. This research implied that RCD are promising tools for directly and in situ imaging FA in vivo, thus providing critical insights into FA-related pathophysiological processes. Sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering for the quantitative detection of formaldehyde in foods using gold nanorod substrate

Abstract:<p>Formaldehyde is a common poisonous and harmful substance in food. The detection of formaldehyde is of great significance in food analysis. In this study, a rapid and sensitive quantitative detection method for formaldehyde (HCHO) has been developed based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) using a 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazol (AHMT)-formaldehyde derivative reaction. Gold nanorods (GNRs) were synthesized by a seed growth method to facilitate the collection of the SERS spectra of the extracts. After optimizing several parameters, including the aspect ratios of the GNRs, the multi-hotspots formed by the solvent and microenvironment around the GNRs, the dosages of different reagents, and the selectivity and uniformity of the methods were explored. The SERS analysis of the pure formaldehyde solution used a wide dynamic concentration range from 1.089 nM to 1.089 mM, with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.86 nM and an enhancement factor of 3.9×10<sup>7</sup>. The recovery of this quantification method was calculated to be between 89.45% and 103.2%, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 6.74% for intentionally contaminated rice noodles, steamed buns, and liquor. Compared to that in previous reports, this analytical method made full use of the enhanced function of GNRs to further reduce the detection limit of formaldehyde. In summary, the developed method has the advantages of simplicity, rapid performance, and cost effectiveness.</p>
