Abstract:Electric Vehicles (EV) presents a unique opportunity for large-scale flexible demand, particularly when subject to intelligent charging. A smart charging algorithm is proposed here, with the dual objectives of minimizing charging costs and preventing grid congestion. EVs are charged according to individual user requirements while respecting the constraints of the local distribution grid. A day-ahead dynamic distribution system tariff (DT) scheme is proposed to avoid congestion on the local distribution system from the day-ahead planning perspective. Locational marginal pricing is used to determine the dynamic distribution system tariff based on predicted day-ahead spot prices and predicted charging behaviors. Case studies were carried out using distribution grids from the Danish island of Bornholm and the case studies demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed EV charging schedule algorithm

Abstract:New energy sources, including renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and power storage technologies, are environmentally friendly, renewable, and long-lasting, reducing dependence on finite fossil energy sources and helping to mitigate climate change and reduce environmental pollution. This paper focuses on the interaction between smart grids and electric vehicle (EV) charging. The proliferation of electric vehicles contributes to better utilisation of renewable energy, reduces dependence on fossil fuels, reduces environmental pollution, improves air quality, and promotes sustainable development. Smart grids offer more possibilities and conveniences for electric vehicle charging, enabling more efficient, reliable, and sustainable distribution and management of electricity through the application of critical technological components such as smart metering, distributed energy integration and management technologies, demand response technologies, peak and valley tariff strategies, and intelligent charging station scheduling technologies. This paper further delves into the academic and practical applications of innovative grid-related technologies. It presents a case study of electric cab charging guidance strategies, demonstrating the synergy between electric vehicle charging and the power grid and road network. By optimising charging paths and improving charging efficiency, energy waste is minimised, and the market penetration of EVs is promoted. Continuous exploration and innovation in this field will provide crucial strategic support for using clean energy, reducing environmental pollution, and improving energy efficiency, contributing to constructing a sustainable future mode of transportation.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) can store energy in their batteries and feed it back to the charging station through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) as a medium. Since vehicles are mobile, EVs and charging stations compose an energy transmission and distribution system, called EV energy internet. This paper analyzes the energy routes from the energy sources to the stations that require energy in EV energy internet and studies the energy loss during transmission. A heuristic algorithm based on generic solution is presented. The real-world transporting data in Manhattan and Pioneer Valley Transit Authority (PVTA) is used in the simulations. The result of simulations shows that this algorithm is efficient.

Abstract:The widespread use of electric vehicles (EVs) is becoming an imminent trend. Research has been done on the scheduling of EVs from the perspective of the charging characteristic, improvement in the safety and economy of the power grid, or the traffic jams in the transport system caused by a large number of EVs driven to charging stations. There is a lack of systematic studies considering EVs, the power grid, and the transport system all together. In this paper, a novel optimal charging scheduling strategy for different types of EVs is proposed based on not only transport system information, such as road length, vehicle velocity and waiting time, but also grid system information, such as load deviation and node voltage. In addition, a charging scheduling simulation platform suitable for large-scale EV deployment is developed based on actual charging scenarios. The simulation results show that the improvements in both the transport system efficiency and the grid system operation can be obtained by using the optimal strategy, such as the node voltage drop is decreased, the power loss is reduced, and the load curve is optimized.

Abstract:In recent years, the massive increase in electric vehicles (EV) and renewable energy (RER) has caused serious problems in the power system network. During peak hours of electricity consumption, the soaring demand for electricity from variable renewable energy sources severely undermines the stability and efficiency of the power supply. This article first reviews the infrastructure and charging strategies of electric vehicle batteries. After modeling and analyzing the charging activities, the results show that the charging behavior can transform the charging demand from the peak time period to the off-peak time period, and the online MSS optimization of electric vehicle charging is extracted through the Jacobian matrix. Finally, it provides a practical overview of the existing and future solutions to manage the large-scale integration of EVs into the network.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) represent one of the most promising technologies to green the transportation systems. An important issue is that high penetration of EVs brings heavy electricity demand to the power grid. One effective way to alleviate the impact is to integrate local power generation such as renewable energy sources (RESs) into charging infrastructure. Because of the intermittent and indispatchable nature of RESs, it becomes very challenging to coordinate EVs charging with other grid load and renewable generation. In this paper, EVs charging problem in the presence of smart grid technologies is investigated, and the interaction with renewable energy is reviewed. An overview about EVs and RESs is first presented, which mainly introduces major types of EVs and renewable energy estimation methods. Then, according to the objectives, the existing research works are divided into three categories: cost-aware, efficiency-aware, and emissions-aware interactions between EVs and RESs. Each category׳s discussion includes the description of core ideas, summarization of solutions, and comparison between different works. Finally, some key open issues about EVs interacting with RESs are given and some possible solutions are also discussed.

Abstract:The energy storage of Electric Vehicles (EVs) can be utilized by Smart Grid through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) that allows EVs to feed energy stored in their batteries back to the grid as needed. Combining V2G and the mobility of vehicles, EVs can provide a natural energy transmission system called EV energy network. The main idea of this paper focus on how to schedule and allocate energy from energy sources to places where energy is needed. The features of energy route in EV energy network are analyzed and a greedy algorithm based on the hypergraph is presented. Simulations using real-world transporting data in Manhattan and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority(PVTA). Simulations show that this method is efficient.

Abstract:With the ongoing large-scale implementation of electric vehicles (EVs), the exploration of a more flexible approach to maintain fair interaction between EVs and the power grid is urgently required. This paper presents an aggregator-based interactive charging management scheme adopting interruptible load (IL) pricing, in which the EV aggregator will respond to the load control command of the grid in an EV interactive mode. Charging managements are carried out according to battery state-of-charge and the EV departure time in EV charging stations. A power-altering charging (PAC) control method is proposed to dispatch the EVs charging fairly in a station and guarantee EV owners’ preferences. The method does not require classical iterative procedures or heavy computations; furthermore, it is beneficial for EVs to depart earlier than expected for reasons beyond keeping homeostatic charging. The proposed scheme, which is tested to charge individual EVs well according to its preference, was implemented as part of an “EV Beijing” project. The proposed management scheme provides new insight into EV charging strategy and provides another choice to EV users.

Abstract:Energy shortage and environment pollution are currently of most concern. Electric Vehicles (EVs) can ease the crisis. As a result, they will increase dramatically. But the tremendous growth of EVs will affect the secure and steady operation of power systems. In order to make the power systems safe, it is essential to analyze the impact of EV on distribution networks. In this paper, the reactive power characteristics of charging stations and the impact of charging stations accessing to typical distribution networks are simulated and analyzed. Normal-charge and fast-charge are considered in charging stations. For each charging mode, the characteristic of charging stations accessing to four types of typical distribution networks is simulated, and the operation time of charging station is divided into day and night.

Abstract:Integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the coupled power distribution network (PDN) and transportation network (TN) presents substantial challenges. This paper explores three key areas in EV integration: charging/discharging scheduling, charging navigation, and charging station planning. First, the paper discusses the features and importance of EV integrated traffic–power networks. Then, it examines key factors influencing EV strategy, such as user behavior, charging preferences, and battery performance. Next, the study establishes an EV charging and discharging model, with particular emphasis on the complexities introduced by factors such as pricing mechanisms and integration approaches. Furthermore, the charging navigation model and the role of real-time traffic information are discussed. Additionally, the paper highlights the importance of multi-type charging stations and the impact of uncertainty on charging station planning. The paper concludes by identifying significant challenges and potential opportunities for EV integration. Future research should focus on enhancing coupled network modeling, refining user behavior models, developing incentive pricing mechanisms, and advancing autonomous driving and automated charging technologies. Such efforts will be essential for achieving a sustainable and efficient EV ecosystem.

Real-Time Bi-directional Electric Vehicle Charging Control with Distribution Grid Implementation

Abstract:As electric vehicle (EV) adoption is growing year after year, there is no doubt that EVs will occupy a significant portion of transporting vehicle in the near future. Although EVs have benefits for environment, large amount of un-coordinated EV charging will affect the power grid and degrade power quality. To alleviate negative effects of EV charging load and turn them to opportunities, a decentralized real-time control algorithm is developed in this paper to provide optimal scheduling of EV bi-directional charging. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, numerical simulation is performed based on real-world EV user data, and power flow analysis is carried out to show how the proposed algorithm improve power grid steady state operation. . The results show that the implementation of proposed algorithm can effectively coordinate bi-directional charging by 30% peak load shaving, more than 2% of voltage drop reduction, and 40% transmission line current decrease.

Abstract:With the fast development of electrifications of vehicles, EV charging stations are booming in coming years. Meanwhile, the growing demand for charging power, and the stochastic patterns of charging behaviors are creating the scarcity of electricity and significant power fluctuations to the power system. To ensure the system stability and the supply–demand balance of the electricity market, several technical measures are necessary, such as more ancillary power reserve, appropriate demand-side energy management, etc. Moreover, the higher penetration level of renewable energy sources in the conventional power system can be leveraged to sustain the power peak induced by the charging demand with proper system operation strategies. This paper presents an overview of the latest research of EV charging stations and highlights some important issues and challenges in power architectures design, energy storage techniques, control strategies of micro-grid, and energy management optimization. In addition, the hierarchical control system is specifically outlined, which offers decoupled control objectives in different layers of microgrid systems for EV charging. Typical coordinated control techniques and energy management strategies aiming to achieve the optimum performance of EV charging stations are investigated in detail. Further, the future research directions are extensively discussed at the end of this paper.

Abstract:Current studies have shown that the rapid increasing of electric vehicles (EVs) may bring in great impact to the power grid, especially to the directly-connected EV charging station. Considering the cost sensitivity of EV owner and the controllability of the charging process, the pricing and charging power management may be the most effectiveness adjusting mechanisms to reduce the negative impact to the EV charging station. Therefore, we consider the combined scheduling of pricing and power management for EVs in the charging station. First, due to the uncertain EV arrivals, charging requirements and distributed renewable power generation, this problem is represented as a Markov decision process. Second, a bilevel optimization framework is designed for the formulated stochastic programming model. The outer optimization is solved by rollout method while the inner optimization is represented as a mixed-integer programming and solved by typical commercial tools. At last, the operation enhancement and operation benefit improvement of this method are demonstrated by comparing the turnover and the detailed power management of different policies.

Abstract:Vehicle-to-grid provides a viable approach that feeds the battery energy stored in electric vehicles (EVs) back to the power grid. Meanwhile, since EVs are mobile, the energy in EVs can be easily transported from one place to another. Based on these two observations, we introduce a novel concept called EV energy network for energy transmission and distribution using EVs. We present a concrete example to illustrate the usage of an EV energy network, and then study the optimization problem of how to deploy energy routers in an EV energy network. We prove that the problem is NP-hard and develop a greedy heuristic solution. Simulations using real-world data shows that our method is efficient.

Abstract:With the rapid increase of electric vehicles (EVs), the uncoordinated charging of large-scale EVs will inevitably form a new peak of power consumption, which will put forward new requirements for the adjustment of EV charging behavior and the power supply capacity of the distribution network. However, upgrading the infrastructure of the distribution network is very expensive, so it is of great value to research on how to realize the optimal integration of EVs without infrastructure upgrading. In this paper, an intelligent grouping method is proposed considering the coupling relationship among EV travel information, battery status and other characteristics, and a charging/discharging priority model is established based on the contribution index of charging process. Finally, a smart real-time energy management strategy is formed in order to maximize the penetration level of EVs under current conditions. With the strategy proposed, the maximum penetration level of EVs is increased from 20% to 60% in the simulation. The strategy has good adaptability to the gradually growth of the base load, which can effectively delay infrastructure upgrading of the distribution network and reduce the overall operation cost of the station. It could furtherly provide a reference for the operation and upgrading of the parking lot charging station.

Abstract:As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) increases, EV charging demand is also growing rapidly. In the smart grid environment, there is an urgent need for green charging stations (GCS) to effectively manage the internal photovoltaic (PV), energy storage system (ESS), charging behaviors of EVs and energy transactions with entities. In this paper, a novel EV classification approach was proposed for GCS, of which the objective is to minimize the total cost of energy trading between charging station and entities. Based on EV charging requirements and risk preference for participating in demand response (DR), EVs are classified into three categories: (1) regular; (2) conservative; and (3) vehicle to grid(V2G). For different types of EVs, charging price schemes are proposed for GCS to stimulate more EVs to interact with the grid and duly dis-charging their power in the capacity of V2G runners. In dealing with the uncertainty issues caused by photovoltaic generation, chance-constrained and probabilistic sequence methods are employed to solve the proposed framework with satisfactory computational efficiency. Case studies based on genuine PV generation, load and pricing data are carried out to verify the proposed framework. It is demonstrated V2G EVs can dramatically reduce the total cost to the GCS. Besides, V2G EVs also can greatly reduce the charging cost compared to regular and conservative EVs.

Abstract:In the near future, with more distributed generators connected and new demands arising from the electrification of heat and transport in the distribution networks, infrastructure will become ever more stressed. However, building costly new circuits to accommodate generation and demand growth is time-consuming and environmentally unfriendly. Therefore, active network management (ANM) has been promoted in many countries, aiming to relieve network pressure. Previous research in ANM was focused on distribution areas with significant renewable penetration, where ANM reduced network pressure through significantly enhanced generation curtailment strategies rather than adopting traditional asset investment. This paper proposes the use of electric vehicles (EVs) as responsive demand to complement network stress relief that was purely based on generation curtailment. It is achieved by allowing EVs to absorb excessive renewable generation when they cause network pressure, and it thus can provide additional measures to generation curtailment strategies. The approach is illustrated on a practical extra-high voltage distribution system. The analyses clearly demonstrate the combined management of demand and generation is superior to previous sole generation management. The combined management strategy can achieve 7.9% improvement in utilization of renewable energy, and subsequently increase the net investment profit by £566 k.

Abstract:Possession of motor vehicles in China has been rising fast, along with continuous economic growth, social development and improvements in living standards, causing severe energy and environmental stress. To relieve the stress, China is promoting electric vehicles as good alternatives to conventional vehicles. By 2020, the accumulated production and sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach five million. Large-scale connection of electric vehicles to the power grid would inevitably bring challenges to the power sector. In this paper, an electric vehicle and multi-region load-dispatch grid-structure-based (EVMLG) mathematical model is presented, aiming to investigate the interaction between electric vehicles and the power sector. Impacts of charging behaviors are carefully considered. Through case studies, we conclude that (1) the development of electric vehicles will influence regional generation portfolio and operation pattern of the power sector, and increase the utilization of renewables, (2) guided charging can adapt to the power sector, and lead to better economic and environmental benefits, (3) electric vehicles are suitable to be deployed in resource-rich regions, and (4) the development potential of electric vehicles in China is huge from the viewpoint of power supply capacity.
