Abstract:Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence emission from iridium(III) complexes remains a relatively unexplored area of research. To date, only a few iridium(III) complexes with NIR fluorescence emission have been reported. In this study, a novel iridium(III) pyridazine complex, based on (4,4'-((1E,1'E)-benzo[c]cinnoline-2,9-diylbis(ethene-2,1-diyl))bis(N,N-di-p-tolylaniline) ligand, denoted as (MTPA)2Ab-IrCl3, was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational investigations to reveal the relationship between its structure and photophysical properties. At room temperature, (MTPA)2Ab-IrCl3 exhibits both NIR fluorescence and phosphorescence in tetrahydrofuran solution when excited with visible light. Particularly, its maximum fluorescence emission wavelength (760 nm) is far longer than its maximum phosphorescence emission wavelength (627 nm). This is ascribed to the joint electron transitions from both ligand and complex. When (MTPA)2Ab-IrCl3 is excited at about 500 nm, the optical absorption is mainly achieved by the electronic transition of (MTPA)2Ab module, and then the energy is transferred to (MTPA)2Ab-IrCl3 via intermolecular Dexter energy transfer to form the higher excited state Sn(n≥2), which further relaxes to the S1 through internal conversion and vibrational relaxation and finally travels back to the ground state and emits fluorescence. Additionally, (MTPA)2Ab-IrCl3 can also undergo an unconventional Sn(n≥2)→T1→S0 process to emit phosphorescence, which is highly significant for the development of iridium(III) complexes as luminescent materials. This study sheds new light on the potential use of iridium(III) complexes in various applications.
