Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a widely used characterization technique for studying chemical compositions and light-matter interactions in the infrared range. However, it remains challenging to use conventional FTIR equipment to characterize materials that are environmentally sensitive and/or have rough surfaces due to their dynamic response to external stimuli (e.g., humidity) and light scattering from the sample surface. Here, we describe an approach enabling quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurements of these challenging samples, including transmittance, reflectance, and emissivity. We designed and 3D-printed a miniaturized environmental chamber that can be directly inserted into the sample holder of a conventional integrating sphere to perform total transmission and reflection measurements in controlled environments. Moreover, a calibration method was developed to exclude light scattering from rough surfaces of the sample and the distortion created by infrared windows. To illustrate the potential application of this method, we have performed quantitative infrared measurements, both specular and diffusive, on a sapphire standard reference with a specular surface, as well as a textile sample that has a rough surface and is dynamically responsive to changes in humidity. The calibrated results measured with the equipped chamber match those measured without the IR windows, demonstrating the viability of our environmental chamber and the proposed calibration method. This quantitative infrared spectroscopy measurement technique may help advance fields such as metasurfaces and adaptive textiles, where samples are often rough, dynamically responsive, and/or environmentally sensitive.

Abstract:We hasobtained near-infrared spectrogram of kaolinite, serpentine, talc, pyrophyllite, and muscovite and using the principles of mineralogy and spectroscopy, we find that the absorption peak intensities around 1400 nm of dioctahedralphyllosilicates are much stronger than the trioctahedral phyllosilicate due to the octahedral voids,if the minerals also has a 1:1 type structure, it may add multiple spectral bands because of hydrogen bonding effect; Phyllosilicates with the same type of structural unit layer can make the positions of overlapping peaks produced by metals and hydroxies offset when kations have different electronegativities in the octahedral sites; The existence of transition ions will make peak intensities and shapes abnormal; There are different features on the near-infrared spectrogram when different molecules and ions absorbed photons with different energys and we analyzed the cause of the similarity and dissimilarity for different absorption bands which can reflect mineral types, crystalline, water content, etc. The technology of portable near- infrared mineral analyzer is widely used in minerals and ore deposits with its small size, easy to carry, etc. The technology of near-infrared mineral analysis has many advantages than the traditional methods. With the development of near-infrared technology, it will be more and more applied in geological field and can play a role part in ore and oil exploration.

Abstract:Fourier transform mid–infrared(FTMIR)is a non–destructive and rapid technique applied increasingly for food quality evaluation in recent years.It provides us more information to research the quality of food products.This review intends to give an overview of the type of information that can be obtained based on some developed theory and food research of FTMIR.It includes the principle of FTMIR technique,the specific techniques with chemometrics for data pre–processing methods,qualitative and quantitative analysis and model transfer,and the wide applications of FTMIR in food science.In addition,the promise of FTMIR technique for food quality evaluation is demonstrated,and some problems which need to be solved or investigated further are also discussed.
Quantitative Analysis of Mixed Minerals with Finite Phase Using Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Technology

Abstract:It is crucial but challenging to detect intermediate or end products promptly. Traditional chemical detection methods are time-consuming and cannot detect mineral phase content. Thermal infrared hyperspectral (TIH) technology is an effective means of real-time imaging and can precisely capture the emissivity characteristics of objects. This study introduces TIH to estimate the content of potassium salts, with a model based on Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR). The model takes the emissivity spectrum of potassium salt into account and accurately predicts the content of Mixing Potassium (MP), a mineral mixture produced in Lop Nur, Xinjiang. The main mineral content in MP was measured by Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA), mainly including picromerite, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and less sodium chloride. 129 configured MP samples were divided into calibration (97 samples) and prediction (32 samples) sets. The CARS-PLSR method achieved good prediction results for MP mineral content (picromerite: correlation coefficient of correction set (Rp2) = 0.943, predicted root mean square error (RMSEP) = 2.72%, relative predictive deviation (RPD) = 4.24; potassium chloride: Rp2 = 0.948, RMSEP = 2.86%, RPD = 4.42). Experimental results convey that TIH technology can effectively identify the emissivity characteristics of MP minerals, facilitating quantitative detection of MP mineral content.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) can provide crucial information on the molecular structure of organic and inorganic components and has been used extensively for chemical characterization of geological samples in the past few decades. In this paper, recent applications of FTIR in the geological sciences are reviewed. Particularly, its use in the characterization of geochemistry and thermal maturation of organic matter in coal and shale is addressed. These investigations demonstrate that the employment of high-resolution micro-FTIR imaging enables visualization and mapping of the distributions of organic matter and minerals on a micrometer scale in geological samples, and promotes an advanced understanding of heterogeneity of organic rich coal and shale. Additionally, micro-FTIR is particularly suitable for in situ, non-destructive characterization of minute microfossils, small fluid and melt inclusions within crystals, and volatiles in glasses and minerals. This technique can also assist in the chemotaxonomic classification of macrofossils such as plant fossils. These features, barely accessible with other analytical techniques, may provide fundamental information on paleoclimate, depositional environment, and the evolution of geological (e.g., volcanic and magmatic) systems.

Abstract:The knowledge of OH incorporated in nominally anhydrous minerals (NAMs) is crucial for understanding the chemical and physical properties of the Earth's interior. Infrared Spectrometry (IR) is a powerful tool to detect trace amount of water in NAMs because of its high sensitivity, so it is widely used in investigating the species, concentration and site in crystals of water in NAMs. With the improvement of instruments and analytical techniques, more accessories attached with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are applied. In situ FTIR analysis at varying temperatures can be used to obtain the spectra under different temperatures timely, so it is widely utilized in studying behavior of OH and H2O in hydrous minerals and glasses. Examining the variation of such spectra parameters as band position, band shape and band number with temperature can be used to study the dehydration mechanisms and diffusivity of hydrous minerals and glasses. Moreover, temperature dependence of IR absorption coefficient OH and H2O in glasses found by this technique call upon the correction of temperature-dependent absorption coefficients. Although in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is widely used in investigating OH and H2O in hydrous minerals and glasses, the application for NAMs is still scarce. The hydrous components in minerals are active and mobile, the speciation and sites of hydrous components under temperatures of geologic interest may be not the same as those at room temperature. So it is indispensable to obtain the spectra of water in NAMs under different temperatures timely. The earlier work using this technique for NAMs simply examined the change of the spectra with temperature and identified H species. Now, inspired by the relevant work of hydrous minerals and glasses, in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is also utilized in investigating dehydration mechanisms and diffusivity of water in NAMs. Moreover, using in situ varying temperature FTIR technique, temperature dependence of integral absorption coefficients of OH in NAMs can be studied through observation of IR integral absorbances of OH at different temperatures. On the other hand, by analyzing the relationship between chemical composition and altitude of the change of band frequency with temperature, the information about OH incorporation mechanism in NAMs can be explored using in situ varying temperature FUR technique. Although some work has been carried out in recent years and has obtained some new achievements, the research about OH in NAMs using in situ varying temperature FTIR technique is still in preliminary stage. Further studies in NAMs by this technique will be focused on the followings; (I) quantifying the temperature-dependence of OH IR absorption coefficient; (2) expanding the study of dehydration mechanism and kinetics; (3) exploring the OH incorporation mechanism.
Measurement of emissive spectral fingerprinting for material identity by the fourier transform infrared remote sensing technique

Abstract:A remote sensing infrared spectroscopy equipment made up of a laboratory spectrometer and a Newtonian reflector telescope is introduced. This equipment is used to measure emissive infrared spectrums of five specific specimens composed of respective materials. The research includes system hardware establishment and identifying algorithm software investigation. Experiments are carried out in the standard condition without any infrared source. The signal collected into the facility is spontaneous radiation from the specimens. A database is found to store the spectrum characteristics of each observed substance, to estimate which material the specimen comprises. Objects in normal temperature radiate a small amount of infrared. As a result, the signal is inundated by noise in the spectral plot, which makes it hard to identify the spectral characteristics by observing the plotted lines. Correlating the experimental data with characteristic spectral sequences in the established database is a better way. The maximum correlation value indicates the most possible substance. The experiment shows that the identifying accuracy is more than 90 percent. From the experimental study, it can be concluded that integrating the hardware and software described above, researchers can find an effective way to identify the substance by means of non-contact infrared spectral fingerprinting detection.

Abstract:In recent years, food safety incidents have been frequently reported. Food or raw materials themselves contain substances that may endanger human health and are called toxic and harmful substances in food, which can be divided into endogenous, exogenous toxic, and harmful substances and biological toxins. Therefore, realizing the rapid, efficient, and nondestructive testing of toxic and harmful substances in food is of great significance to ensure food safety and improve the ability of food safety supervision. Among the nondestructive detection methods, infrared spectroscopy technology has become a powerful solution for detecting toxic and harmful substances in food with its high efficiency, speed, easy operation, and low costs, while requiring less sample size and is nondestructive, and has been widely used in many fields. In this review, the concept and principle of IR spectroscopy in food are briefly introduced, including NIR and FTIR. Then, the main progress and contribution of IR spectroscopy are summarized, including the model’s establishment, technical application, and spectral optimization in grain, fruits, vegetables, and beverages. Moreover, the limitations and development prospects of detection are discussed. It is anticipated that infrared spectroscopy technology, in combination with other advanced technologies, will be widely used in the whole food safety field.

Abstract:The substance recognition algorithm is presented which is based on infrared spectroscopy in order to solve the problem during qualitative and quantitative infrared spectroscopy.By the combination of the Euclidean distance and traditional spectral similarity judgment methods,the theoretical analysis of the algorithm and the development of the software are completed.The experimental results show that the accuracy is better than 96% when the algorithm is applied to test the mixture.The algorithm can programmatically achieve rapid detection of substances in the field and maintain high accuracy to meet the needs of spectroscopy in field of food security.

Abstract:A computer algorithm, which matches theoretical to measured infrared reflectance spectra, was successfully employed to determine multiple thin film properties of integrated circuits. Properties, such as film thickness, dielectric constant, and free carrier concentration were determined for a variety of important electronic films both in the laboratory and in process reactors. The latter measurements were accomplished by optically interfacing a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer to several reactors. Real-time process monitoring allowed determination of deposition rate, free carrier activation temperature, and the influence of reactor conditions on film properties. Finally, these measurements were nondestructive, performed in-situ and within seconds, demonstrating the utility of this method for real-time process monitoring and control.

Research on geological mineral identification based on near infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:As a green analysis method, near infrared spectroscopy has the advantages of fast analysis speed, easy operation, batch processing and no damage to samples compared with traditional detection technology. In this paper, the response surface model was used to analyze the interactive influence rules of moisture content, particle size, and optical path on correlation coefficient of the near infrared spectrum test fitting model, so as to obtain the best near infrared spectrum test conditions; and summarized the application of near infrared spectroscopy in the identification of geological minerals such as gems and jades, soil minerals and altered minerals. The response surface experiment results of correlation coefficient of near infrared spectrum fitting model showed that each influencing factor has significant difference, and the order of significance is: sample moisture content > optical path > particle size. When the optical path is 5.82mm, the particle size is 80.86 mesh, and the moisture content is 8.3%, the correlation coefficient reaches the maximum. In addition, the characteristic peak positions, functional group structures, and molecular structural formulas of near infrared spectrograms of geological minerals such as gems and jades, soil minerals, and altered minerals were summarized and analyzed, with a view to providing a theoretical basis for the identification and application of near infrared spectroscopy in the geological mineral.

Abstract:Infrared (IR) imaging and Raman chemical imaging have advantages over conventional methods to investigate heterogeneous plant structures in providing quantitative and qualitative analyses with the spatial distribution of the components. Combined with multivariate statistical analysis, they have been proven to be powerful nondestructive analytical tools in applications in plant materials. This review aims to present a general perspective about IR imaging and Raman chemical imaging in plant materials. The first section will introduce a variety of characteristics with the underlying principles, respectively. And the second section will review selected application in the latest literature, such as discrimination of different plant samples, investigation of the microstructures of leaf, identification of the cell wall components, and study of the microstructure and quality of cereal grains. And the last section is conclusion.

Abstract:Silicate minerals are essential bricks of solid planets, which have been studied deeply by infrared absorption spectroscopy. Along with the rapid development of planetary exploration, infrared emission spectroscopy and corresponding radiation properties of minerals have been receiving attention. However, systematic research on silicate minerals using infrared emission spectroscopy has been absent so far. In this work, various silicate minerals (totally ten in five series included nesosilicates, eyclosilicates, inosilicates, phyllosilicates and tectosilicates) were investigated infrared spectral characteristics and infrared radiation properties using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, and infrared spectroscopy (absorption and emission spectroscopy). Results indicated that the assignment of each band in infrared emission spectra of all samples could be obtainable referring to the well-known infrared absorption spectra, presenting a dominant absorption band near 1000 cm−1 related with the stretching of Si–O bonds and several weak bending-driven absorption bands in the range of 400–650 cm−1. A good linear relationship (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.996) between two corresponding wavenumbers suggested emission bands of silicate minerals have great correspondence with their absorption bands. Both vibrational stretching and bending of Si–O bonds in both spectra regularly shifted to higher frequencies as the increase of Si/O from 0.25 for nesosilicates and 0.50 for tectosilicates. The average emissivity of silicates, obtained from radiation energy spectra from 400 to 2000 cm−1 in the temperature range of 50–140 °C, showed all silicate minerals presented relatively higher emissivity (> 0.910) and displayed a remarkable reduction from nesosilicates (e.g., 0.981 for forsterite) to tectosilicates minerals (e.g., 0.913 for quartz). It was thus concluded that higher emissivity of silicates was attributed to the decrease of polymerization degree of SiO4 tetrahedron (R2 = 0.86), vibrational frequency and range for Si–O stretching (R2 = 0.88, 0.92, respectively), and vibrational range for Si–O bending (R2 = 0.85). This work gets insight into the relationship among spectral characteristics, crystal chemistry, and radiation properties of silicate minerals, and would help accurately identify and distinguish various silicate minerals in remote sensing analysis for understanding the composition of planetary surfaces and their evolutionary path.

However, due to the diffraction limit, conventional infrared spectroscopy cannot be applied to nanoscale material. In the past decade, FTIR nano-spectroscopy (nano-FTIR), combining scanning near-field optical microscopy and FTIR, has made significant progress. It provides scientists a powerful tool to study polymers, 2D-materials, semiconductor devices, and biomaterials at the nanoscale. In this review, we introduce the development and working mechanism of nano-FTIR, and summarize some typical applications in different research fields. The purpose of this review is to allow readers to understand the basic principles of nano-FTIR, its current development status, and the application potential of this technology. Finally, we briefly summarize current challenges faced by this technology and present some research directions that deserve attention in the future.</span>
