Abstract:Magnesium (Mg)-based materials exhibit higher hydrogen-storage density among solid-state hydrogen-storage materials (HSMs). Highly reliable hydrolysis can be achieved using them for hydrogen production. They can also achieve the integration of hydrogen production and storage via the regeneration. Furthermore, rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs), which possess desirable qualities that exhibit immense potential in addressing challenges related to lithium resource scarcity. However, limitations like high desorption temperature, poor cycle life, low hydrolysis rate, and propensity for passivation layer on Mg anodes, hinder their large-scale use as promising energy storage materials (ESMs). Herein, the review offers a comprehensive summary and analysis of the latest research in Mg-based materials for hydrogen storage, production, regeneration and RMBs. We summarize the impact of different methodologies on the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of MgH2. In particular, we thoroughly investigate the commonly used methods for enhancing the hydrolysis efficiency of Mg/MgH2. The currently research status on the regeneration of borohydrides by Mg-based materials is also summarized. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing Mg as anode material in RMBs are also evaluated. This review aims to provide a fundamental insight of Mg-based materials and technologies and offer new strategies for promoting the sustainable development of advanced Mg-based materials.

Abstract:Hydrogen has been regarded as a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels, presenting itself as a viable and environmentally friendly energy choice. The design and fabrication of highly efficient hydrogen storage materials is crucial to the wide utilization of hydrogen‐based technologies. Magnesium‐based nanocrystalline materials have received significant interest in the field of hydrogen storage due to their remarkable hydrogen storage capabilities and release efficiency. This review emphasizes on the most useful techniques including vapor deposition, sol‐gel synthesis, electrochemical deposition, magnetron sputtering, and template‐assisted approaches used for the fabrication of Magnesium‐based nanocrystalline hydrogen storage materials (Mg‐NHSMs), stressing their advantages, limitations, and recent advancements. These cutting‐edge techniques demonstrate their significance in offering useful insights into the performance of Mg‐NHSMs. Further, this review describes various applications of Mg‐NHSMs. In addition, this review highlights the conclusion and future perspectives on the improvement of magnesium based nanocrystalline materials for efficient hydrogen storage.

Abstract:The utilization of hydrogen energy has attracted great attention, while the storage and transportation of hydrogen restrict its wide practical application. As a solid hydrogen storage material, Mg-based alloys show great potential in the field of hydrogen storage. However, the high temperature of hydrogen absorption and release, and the slow rate of hydrogen release cast a shadow on its engineering application. To improve the hydrogen storage capacity of Mg-based alloys, the researches mainly focus on the optimization of alloy composition and the improvement of processing technology, and nano refinement is one of the most promising methods. In this study, all the processing technologies of nanostructured Mg are introduced, including high energy ball milling, physical vapor deposition, hydriding chemical vapor deposition, liquid-phase chemical synthesis and template method. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are also analyzed. The effect of nanostructure and element doping on the hydrogen storage property of Mg-based alloys is summarized. This study provides a reference for the research of the material development and improvement of preparation technology in hydrogen storage field.

Abstract:Mg-based materials are very promising for hydrogen storage applications. However, both the kinetic and thermodynamic problems are remaining for these applications especially for on-board storage. Here we will review the methods used by the authors to synthesize Mg-based hydrogen storage materials with nanostructure as well as some novel techniques from other researchers, and focus on how these nanotechnology processing methods could change kinetics and thermodynamics in Mg-based materials for hydrogen storage. These methods include ball milling (mechanical grinding, mechanical alloying, reactive ball milling), thin film synthesis, hydrogen plasma metal reaction, catalyzed solution synthesis etc.

Abstract:The on-board hydrogen storage needs light, compact, and affordable system to replace the compressed hydrogen tanks. MgH2 is regarded as one of the most promising candidates for solid-state hydrogen storage. Due to the thermodynamically stable Mg-H bond, the poor dissociation ability of H-2 molecules and recombination ability of H atoms on Mg surface, and the low diffusion coefficient of H atoms in Mg, especially in MgH2, there remains a challenge to design a material capable of absorbing and desorbing hydrogen rapidly at moderate temperatures. Herein, common strategies to improve the hydrogen storage properties of Mg-based materials are introduced. Some recent studies for overcoming the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers are reviewed, especially the approaches to fabricate nanostructure in Mg-based materials. The nanometric crystals or particles are synthesized by mechanical deformation, reduction in solution, physical/chemical vapor deposition, interface confinement. The nano-catalyst can be decorated by external doping or in-situ synthesis. In particular, the thermodynamic kinetic parameters for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are provided, and the mechanisms for the enhanced properties are summarized. The principles of structural design and catalytic decoration are discussed, and challenges and perspectives of fabricating nanostructures in Mg-based hydrogen storage materials are proposed. Abstract:Hydrogen, known for its renewable nature, high energy utilization efficiency, and clean combustion, holds significant importance as a component in future energy systems. However, the development of an economical, safe, and efficient method for hydrogen storage remains a formidable challenge. In recent decades, researchers have made significant progress in achieving reversible hydrogen absorption and release using various metal hydrides. Among them, magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) has attracted considerable attention for its high energy density, low cost, and good reversibility. Nevertheless, the high hydrogen absorption and desorption temperature, sluggish kinetic properties, and poor cycling performance of MgH 2 remain as the bottlenecks for its practical application. To mitigate these deficiencies, significant research efforts have been focused on the development of carbon-based materials as a means of preparing multifunctional materials. Carbon-based materials have demonstrated great potential in facilitating synergistic modification strategies, such as nanosizing, catalytic effects, and spatial confinement, which have been proven effective in enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of various carbon-based materials, highlighting their unique properties and their contribution to improving hydrogen storage within MgH 2 matrices. To be specific, we have been systematically reviewed the synergistic impacts of carbon materials, metal-organic frameworks, transition metal carbides (MXenes), and their respective composites on enhancing the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Additionally, this study underscores the benefits of utilizing multifunctional carbon-based materials as modifiers for MgH 2 and proposes potential avenues for academic research.

Abstract:Solid-state hydrogen storage technology is currently the most economical, reliable, safe, and volumetrically efficient storage method. Unfortunately, whether physically or chemically adsorbed hydrogen storage, a single hydrogen storage material cannot be used as a medium for real-life applications. Among them, magnesium-based alloys have the highest mass density for storing hydrogen among metal-based alloys, while porous materials with physical adsorption properties have become a research hotspot for combining with metal hydrogen storage materials since they have the advantages of high specific surface area, low cost, abundant unsaturated active sites, exceptionally high porosity, adjustable pore size and structure, and tunability of composition. Hence, this paper intends to provide the readers with an overview and elucidation of the catalytic effects and mechanisms of metal-organic frameworks and carbon-based porous materials (activated carbon, carbon nanofibers, and carbon nanotubes) in improving the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of Mg/MgH 2 . The results demonstrated that MOFs and carbon-based porous materials act as catalysts, co-catalysts, inhibitors of grain agglomeration and sintering, and layered scaffolds in Mg/MgH 2 , respectively. The rational design of the Mg/MgH 2 composite system was also prospected by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these modification methods. To contribute a feasible idea and solution for the production of solid-state hydrogen storage materials with a high capacity for storing hydrogen, low cost, good hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics, and excellent cycling stability for application in real industry and life.

Abstract:The rapid and extensive development of advanced nanostructures and nanotechnologies has driven a correspondingly rapid growth of research that presents enormous potential for fulfilling the practical requirements of solid state hydrogen storage applications. This article reviews the most recent progress in the development of nanostructured materials for hydrogen storage technology, demonstrating that nanostructures provide a pronounced benefit to applications involving molecular hydrogen storage, chemical hydrogen storage, and as supports for the nanoconfinement of various hydrides. To further optimize hydrogen storage performance, we emphasize the desirability of exploring and developing nanoporous materials with ultrahigh surface areas and the advantageous incorporation of metals and functionalities, nanostructured hydrides with excellent mechanic stabilities and rigid main construction, and nanostructured supports comprised of lightweight components and enhanced hydride loading capacities. In addition to highlighting the conspicuous advantages of nanostructured materials in the field of hydrogen storage, we also discuss the remaining challenges and the directions of emerging research for these materials.

Abstract:Hydrogen can play an important role in the development of a sustainable energy system. However, storing hydrogen in a safe, efficient and economical manner remains a huge challenge. Light metal hydrides have attracted considerable attention for hydrogen storage owing to their high gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen densities. However, the strong covalent and/or ionic bonds between metal atoms and hydrogen result in slow kinetics, poor reversibility, and temperatures too high for dehydrogenation, hence delaying their practical large–scale applications. Considerable efforts have been toward tailoring the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of light metal hydride–based hydrogen storage materials for performance improvement, with the fabrication of nanoscale particles being a key and effective strategy. This review covers the preparation methods and hydrogen storage performance of nanostructured light metal hydrides. The physical and chemical properties and hydrogen storage behaviors of reversible light metal hydrides are first summarized, including MgH2, borohydrides, aluminum hydrides, amide–hydride systems, and hydride composites. The second section focuses on the research progress in nanostructuring for enhancing the reversible hydrogen storage properties of these hydrides. Finally, the main challenges and the future research prospects are discussed. The combination of nanostructuring and nanocatalysis can significantly enhance the performance of these hydrides and make them practical hydrogen carriers.

Abstract:Scientific efforts in search of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels have increased over the last few decades. Exploring natural energy sources such as the sun and the wind offers viable alternatives for energy production other than burning carbon-based fuels. Although these natural energy sources are seasonally regulated, hydrogen provides a huge platform for storing these energies to ensure their continued application; hence, the implementation of a hydrogen economy consisting of hydrogen production , storage, and conversion, in which hydrogen storage plays a vital role. One of its promising playgrounds is solid-state hydrogen storage in magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ), which offers the benefit of hydrogen reversibility with a high capacity of 7.6 wt%. However, it operates at temperatures above 350 °C, unsuitable for storing hydrogen for fuel cells operating near ambient temperatures. Among several methods used to disrupt the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the hydride to ensure its operability under ambient conditions, nanostructuring offers a broad approach with great benefits. In this review, the recent advances in Mg/MgH 2 nanoengineering that cut across nanoconfinement using scaffolds, nanoconfinement with in-situ catalysis, and non-confinement via chemical reduction of Mg/Mg-salts are summarized. The hydrogen storage implications of these emerging techniques are also correlated to unravel the challenges and provide insights for future developments.

Of the numerous candidate alloys for storing hydrogen, magnesium (Mg)-based alloys have been progressively attracting great attention owing to their abundance, low densities, and considerable capacities of hydrogen storage. Nevertheless, the practical applications of Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys are still seriously hampered by their sluggish kinetics and relative stable thermodynamic characteristics. At present, some strategies have been utilizing to tune the hydrogen storage properties of Mg-based alloys, but they are still insufficient to fulfill the requirements for practical industrial applications. In this review, advanced synthetic approaches and some effective strategies including alloying, nanostructuring, doping by catalytic additives and forming nanocomposites with other hydrides, etc., to enhance the requirements properties of Mg-based hydrogen storage alloys are summarized, and then the prospects for further promoting the properties of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials are also briefly discussed.</p>

Abstract:Energy storage is the key for large-scale application of renewable energy,however,massive efficient en-ergy storage is very challenging.Magnesium hydride(MgH2)offers a wide range of potential applications as an energy carrier due to its advantages of low cost,abundant supplies,and high energy storage capac-ity.However,the practical application of MgH2 for energy storage is still impeded by its sluggish kinetics,poor cycling stability,etc.Herein,we provide an overview of recent advances of MgH2 for enhancing the hydrogen storage,lithium-ion storage,and heat storage performances.For hydrogen storage,a particular emphasis was put on altering the kinetics and thermodynamics of MgH2 via catalyzing,alloying,nano-sizing,and compositing.Modifications to MgH2 as a battery anode material mainly focus on the effect of additives,electrolytes,and structure configurations.Prototype heat storage apparatus was proposed based on MgH2 and coupled with other materials or systems to improve the heat storage and economic efficiency.Besides,prospects of MgH2 in these fields are discussed.This review would stimulate more insightful and pioneering research for the design and preparation of MgH2 with excellent energy storage performances.

One of its promising playgrounds is solid-state hydrogen storage in magnesium hydride (MgH2), which offers the benefit of hydrogen reversibility with a high capacity of 7.6 wt%. However, it operates at temperatures above 350 degrees C, unsuitable for storing hydrogen for fuel cells operating near ambient temperatures. Among several methods used to disrupt the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of the hydride to ensure its operability under ambient conditions, nanostructuring offers a broad approach with great benefits. In this review, the recent advances in Mg/MgH2 nano-engineering that cut across nanoconfinement using scaffolds, nanoconfinement with in -situ catalysis, and non-confinement via chemical reduction of Mg/Mg-salts are summarized. The hydrogen storage implications of these emerging techniques are also correlated to unravel the challenges and provide insights for future developments.(c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Experimental and Theoretical Study on High Hydrogen Storage Performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH Composite System Driven by Nano CeO2 Oxygen Vacancies

Abstract:The magnesium based metal hydrogen storage composite system Mg(NH2)2-2LiH has a theoretical hydrogen storage capacity of 5.6 wt.% and is a promising hydrogen storage material for vehicles. However, its application is limited due to serious thermodynamic and kinetic barriers. Introducing efficient catalysts is an effective method to improve the hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH. This article investigates for the first time the use of nano rare earth oxide CeO2 (∼44.5 nm) as an efficient modifier, achieving comprehensive regulation of the hydrogen storage performance of Mg(NH2)2-2LiH composite system through oxygen vacancy driven catalysis. The modification mechanism of nano CeO2 is also systematically studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results. Research has shown that the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of the Mg(NH2)2-2LiH-5 wt.% CeO2 composite system is optimal, with high hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics and reversible performance. The initial hydrogen absorption and desorption temperatures of the composite system were significantly reduced from 110/130°C to 65/80°C, and the release of by-product ammonia was significantly inhibited. Under the conditions of 170°C/50 min and 180°C/100 min, 4.37 wt.% of hydrogen can be rapidly absorbed and released. After 10 cycles of hydrogen release, the hydrogen cycle retention rate increased from 85% to nearly 100%. Further mechanistic studies have shown that the nano CeO2−x generated in situ during hydrogen evolution can effectively weaken the Mg–N and N–H bonds of Mg(NH2)2, exhibiting good catalytic effects. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies provide a fast pathway for the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in the composite system. In addition, nano CeO2−x can effectively inhibit the polycrystalline transformation of the hydrogen evolving product Li2MgN2H2 in the system at high temperatures, reducing the difficulty of re-hydrogenation of the system. This study provides an innovative perspective for the efficient modification of magnesium based metal hydrogen storage composite materials using rare earth based catalysts, and also provides a reference for regulating the comprehensive hydrogen storage performance of hydrogen storage materials using rare earth catalysts with oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Introducing the concept of economy has compelled the industrial circle to research and develop novel hydrogen storage materials with discharge capacity of 5～6.5% by weight. In order to achieve this benchmark, the studied materials have been extended from conventional metal hydrides to novel micro-and/or nanostructured materials and complex compounds since 1996. The latest results and progress in this field are outlined in this paper, with the emphasis on the recent development of NaAlH_4 as a hydrogen storage materials.
