Abstract:The conversion of COx into value-added green aromatics is considered as a promising route to achieve the world's decarbonization due to its considerable thermodynamic driving force and atomic economy where low H/C ratio aromatics are chosen as a product. It is enabled by bifunctional nano-catalysts composed of metal oxides with abundant oxygen vacancies and acid zeolites, thus realizing superior selectivity in hydrocarbons at the single pass of COx conversion. In this mini-review, we mainly provide some thought-provoking insights at the nanoscale of this complicated process including the proximity of active sites, reaction mechanism, asymmetric desorption behavior of intermediates and final products and overall thermodynamic analysis. The facile surface diffusion of intermediates owing to the proximity of active sites stimulates the reaction, which follows an autocatalytic process. This positive feedback attributed to the autocatalytic cycle accelerates the transformation of energy and materials in the thermodynamically optimal direction, making the reaction highly selective towards the final products. This complicated coupling process, like a nano-maze constituted by these micro-environment factors, is complicated in terms of the reaction pathway but highly selective to a fixed direction guided by overall thermodynamics. Deep understanding of such an autocatalytic cycle at the nanoscale paves the way for the rational design of next-generation high-performance catalysts.
Upgrading Phenolic Compounds and Bio-Oil Through Hydrodeoxygenation Using Highly Dispersed Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.

Abstract:Direct and stable conversion of CO2 to aromatics (CTA) is an attractive route for reducing CO2 emissions. However, due to the chemical inertness of CO2, direct CTA reaction with high aromatics selectivity is still challenging. In this work, a tandem catalyst Zn0.1Ti0.9Ox/HZSM-5 with appropriate density and strength of acid sites exhibits a high aromatics selectivity of 67.2% and long-term stability over 100 h. Furthermore, the total selectivity of benzene, toluene, and xylene achieves 24.1% over Zn0.1Ti0.9Ox/HZSM-5 with a modified hydrophilic surface. In addition, the CTA via the formate route has been determined in this reaction system.

Abstract:Transformation of greenhouse gas CO2 and renewable H2 into fuels and commodity chemicals is recognized as a promising route to store fluctuating renewable energy. Although several C1 chemicals, olefins, and gasoline have been successfully synthesized by CO2 hydrogenation, selective conversion of CO2 and H2 into aromatics is still challenging due to the high unsaturation degree and complex structures of aromatics. Here we report a composite catalyst of ZnAlOx and H-ZSM-5 which yields high aromatics selectivity (73.9%) with extremely low CH4 selectivity (0.4%) among the carbon products without CO. Methanol and dimethyl ether, which are synthesized by hydrogenation of formate species formed on ZnAlOx surface, are transmitted to H-ZSM-5 and subsequently converted into olefins and finally aromatics. Furthermore, 58.1% p-xylene in xylenes is achieved over the composite catalyst containing Si-H-ZSM-5. ZnAlOx&H-ZSM-5 suggests a promising application in manufacturing aromatics from CO2 and H2.

Abstract:Syngas conversion to aromatics has been studied over metal oxide/HZSM-5 bifunctional catalyst. In this reaction, CO is activated on metal oxide and hydrogenated to C-1/C-2 intermediate. The formation of aromatics involves C-C coupling, cycfization and dehydrogenation on acid sites of HZSM-5. The matching between CO hydrogenation and aromatization activity is key to the overall catalytic performance. High aromatic selectivity of up to 82.5% may be achieved over various metal oxide/HZSM-5 catalyst among which Cr2O3/HZSM-5 is the best in activity and aromatic selectivity. The CO activation and hydrogenation over Cr2O3 are facilitated by doping of Zn. The effect of Zn doping is revealed by systematic study on phase, morphology, reducibility and oxygen defect concentration. To enhance CO conversion and to prevent excessive hydrogenation, the strict control of Zn/Cr ratio and the phase of Zn species is required. The activity of HZSM-5 may be altered by changing Si/Al ratio and zeolite/oxide ratio and a moderate acid strength and density is necessary to balance the competition between aromatization and side reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the optimal catalyst 1Zn-3Cr/HZSM-5(18) is demonstrated with no significant deactivation after 100 h on stream.

Abstract:The directional transformation of carbon dioxide (CO2) with renewable hydrogen into specific carbon-heavy products (C6+) of high value presents a sustainable route for net-zero chemical manufacture. However, it is still challenging to simultaneously achieve high activity and selectivity due to the unbalanced CO2 hydrogenation and C-C coupling rates on complementary active sites in a bifunctional catalyst, thus causing unexpected secondary reaction. Here we report LaFeO3 perovskite-mediated directional tandem conversion of CO2 towards heavy aromatics with high CO2 conversion (> 60%), exceptional aromatics selectivity among hydrocarbons (> 85%), and no obvious deactivation for 1000 hours. This is enabled by disentangling the CO2 hydrogenation domain from the C-C coupling domain in the tandem system for Iron-based catalyst. Unlike other active Fe oxides showing wide hydrocarbon product distribution due to carbide formation, LaFeO3 by design is endowed with superior resistance to carburization, therefore inhibiting uncontrolled C-C coupling on oxide and isolating aromatics formation in the zeolite. In-situ spectroscopic evidence and theoretical calculations reveal an oxygenate-rich surface chemistry of LaFeO3, that easily escape from the oxide surface for further precise C-C coupling inside zeolites, thus steering CO2-HCOOH/H2CO-Aromatics reaction pathway to enable a high yield of aromatics.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into high-value-added chemicals, especially aromatics, is appealing for the alleviation of carbon emissions. However, preferential production of valuable aromatics including benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) from CO2 is still a great challenge through direct hydrogenation routes due to the complicated side reactions. Herein, we apply a composite catalyst containing metal oxides (ZnZrO x ) and Zn-modified zeolites (Zn/ZSM-5) to selectively synthesize toluene and xylene through CO2 hydrogenation in the presence of benzene. A total selectivity of toluene plus xylene as high as 92.8% is achieved with C1–5 alkane selectivity of less than 4%, as the CO2 conversion reaches 21% and the benzene conversion reaches 22.2%. We demonstrate that the appropriate acid properties of zeolites play a pivotal role in the coupling reaction, which can be readily adjusted by the introduction of Zn. The increase of moderate Zn-induced Lewis acid sites with consumption of strong Brønsted acid sites not only promotes the formation of intermediate alkylation species but also facilitates the recovery of occupied active sites by regulating the successive transformation of formate intermediates and desorption of aromatic products. The enhanced coupling effect results in the elevation of both reactant conversion and specific aromatics products’ (toluene and xylene) selectivity. This work may provide an efficient strategy for the synthesis of high-value aromatics through coupling reactions from CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Aromatics are the important chemical building blocks with wide utilization and huge market demand. CO 2 hydrogenation to value-added aromatics is a promising technology that not only reduces CO 2 emission but also supplies essential chemicals for industry production. Despite numerous efforts in this field, many scientific questions on aromatics production from CO 2 hydrogenation are still unanswered. This review gives a comprehensive overview on the recent achievements of CO 2 direct hydrogenation to aromatics. The transition-metal catalysts and related synthesis methods are comprehensively summarized. The structure–activity relationships of catalysts targeting efficient CO 2 -to-aromatics conversion are discussed in detail, with a special emphasis on the acidity of zeolite and the proximity of two active components. The effects of reaction condition and catalyst stability during CO 2 -to-aromatics conversion are systematically reviewed. The in-depth reaction mechanisms governing activity, selectivity, and stability are fundamentally highlighted for accelerating the catalyst design of CO 2 hydrogenation to aromatics, including the modified Fischer-Tropsch pathway and methanol-mediated pathway. In particular, the in-situ techniques and theoretical methods that are used to uncover the aromatization mechanism of CO 2 hydrogenation are surveyed. Finally, we provide a brief perspective on the remaining challenges and opportunities for the development of CO 2 direct hydrogenation technology.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 with renewable H2 is considered as one of the most practical approaches for the reduction of CO2 and the synthesis of valuable chemicals and fuels. Among the value-added products, olefins and aromatics are highly attractive as essential industrial feedstocks. CO2 hydrogenation to olefins and aromatics mainly undergoes a CO2-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (CO2-FTS) route or a methanol-mediated (MeOH) route, but is often limited by low selectivity and catalyst deactivation. In this review, we first overview the reaction mechanisms and key intermediates along the CO2-FTS and MeOH routes. For each route, we summarize the recent progress toward the catalyst development as well as the optimization of reaction conditions. We conclude the review by identifying challenges and opportunities with an emphasis on approaches for exceeding the product distribution limit, suppressing the catalyst deactivation, and improving the feasibility of low-pressure operation by continuous consumption of key intermediates.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO2 to valuable products is a promising way to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emission. Herein, a strategy for coupling conversion of CO2 and high‐carbon alkane to CO and gasoline is developed, which is a feasible choice for the combination of CO2 recycling and petroleum refining. The CO2 conversion reaches 2.6% under mild condition (270 °C), and the selectivity of gasoline in the cracking products exceeds 70 wt%. Additionally, the introduction of CO2 improves the selectivity of aromatic hydrocarbons and increases the octane number of gasoline. Mechanism studies indicate that synergistic effect between Brønsted acid centers and Ni sites on the Beta zeolite supported Ni (20 wt%) catalyst (20Ni/β) plays the key role in alkane cracking and CO2 reduction. Notably, 13CO2 isotopic experiments show that the hydrogen produced during the aromatization can be captured by CO2, inhibiting undesired hydrogen transfer pathways and enhancement the yield of aromatics, while CO2 is converted into valuable CO.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide (CO) hydrogenation is an important step for efficient utilization of carbon resources in C1 (one carbon) chemistry. Over recent years, this direction has been a hot research area in academia and industry and has also been one of the most challenging routes for the nonoil carbon resources utilization process. A large number of novel reaction routes and catalysts have been studied and reported. Efficient activation and directional conversion of CO are key aspects in the process of CO utilization. Furthermore, effectively activating C-O and C-C bond formation as well as controlling carbon chain growth is the current technical bottleneck of CO hydrogenation. This mini-review introduces the latest research progress for different catalyst systems and processes in CO hydrogenation and analyzes the factors that control the performance of catalysts in different reaction systems. Here, much focus is put on the synthesis of long-chain hydrocarbons, light olefins, C2+ oxygenates, and aromatics, essentially in comparison with the previous reports. Finally, the present challenges and future research directions have been discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into high-value chemicals has been emerging as an attractive research direction in achieving carbon resource sustainability. The chemical products can be categorized into C1 and multi-carbon (C2+) products. In this review, we describe the recent research progress in photocatalytic CO2 conversion systems from C1 products to multi-carbon oxygenates, and analyze the reasons related to their catalytic mechanisms, as the production of multi-carbon oxygenates is generally more difficult than that of C1 products. Then we discuss several examples in promoting the photoconversion of CO2 to value-added multi-carbon products in the aspects of photocatalyst design, mass transfer control, determination of active sites, and intermediate regulation. Finally, we summarize perspectives on the challenges and propose potential directions in this fast-developing field, such as the prospect of CO2 transformation to long-chain hydrocarbons like salicylic acid or even plastics.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 using renewable hydrogen to produce valuable chemicals has recently become highly attractive. Light olefins are important basic monomers for the production of various commodities. This work developed a bifunctional catalyst composed of ZnO-Y2O3 oxide and SAPO-34 zeolite, which catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins with a selectivity in hydrocarbons reaching 83.9% at a conversion of 27.6% at 390 degrees C. The obtained results demonstrated that CO2 conversion and product distribution are strongly dependent on the oxide composition and structure. This new bimetallic oxide catalyst appears promising for further development of CO2 conversion to other valuable chemicals.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxidation of C-H bonds in hydrocarbons represents an efficient and sustainable strategy for the synthesis of value-added chemicals. Herein, a highly selective and continuous-flow electrochemical oxidation process of toluene to various oxygenated products (benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and benzyl acetate) is developed with the electrocatalytic membrane electrodes (ECMEs). The selectivity of target products can be manipulated via surface and interface engineering of Co3O4-based electrocatalysts. We achieved a high benzaldehyde selectivity of 90 % at a toluene conversion of 47.6 % using 1D Co3O4 nanoneedles (NNs) loaded on a microfiltration (MF) titanium (Ti) membrane, i.e, Co3O4 NNs/Ti. In contrast, the main product shifted to benzyl alcohol with a selectivity of 90.1 % at a conversion of 32.1 % after modifying MnO2 nanosheets (NSs) on Co3O4 NNs/Ti (Co3O4@MnO2/Ti) catalyst. Moreover, benzyl acetate product can be obtained with a selectivity of 92 % at a conversion of 58.5 % at high current density (>1.5 mA cm-2), demonstrating that the pathway of toluene oxidation is readily maneuvered. DFT results reveal that modifying MnO2 on Co3O4 optimizes the electron structure of Co3O4@MnO2/Ti and modulates the adsorption behavior of intermediate species. This work demonstrates a sustainable, efficient, and continuous-flow process for precise control over the production selectivity of value-added oxygenated derivatives in the electrochemical oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Catalytic CO2 conversion to clean fuels and chemicals is crucial for mitigating the climate change and reducing the dependence on nonrenewable energy resources. Converting CO2 by hydrogenation using heterogeneous catalysts has been extensively studied in the past decades, and the products distribution can be manipulated by selecting catalysts and reaction conditions. Generally, CO2 conversion to hydrocarbons and to alcohols are the two routes that have been explored the most, and significant advances have been made in developing efficient catalysts and understanding the thermodynamics and kinetics of the two paths. However, effective catalysts and processes are required to selectively maximize CO2 conversion to either C2–C4 olefins, C5+ hydrocarbons, or aromatics and to minimize CH4 and CO. Catalysis for higher alcohols synthesis from CO2 is still in the very early stage and requires more fundamental research due to the lack of understanding the possible reaction pathways and of controlling the key intermediates. This review summarizes the progresses in CO2 conversion via heterogeneous catalysis for the two pathways in the past five years and discusses the origin of the activity and plausible reaction mechanism through a combination of computational, experimental, and analytical studies, along with suggestions for designing improved catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Here, we report a high-performance catalyst MoSx@HSSZ-39 for conversion of COx to C2-4 hydrocarbons, in which MoSx clusters for COx hydrogenation at the first to intermediate methanol and then the zeolitic acid sites surrounding for further conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons. For CO2 hydrogenation, C2-4 hydrocarbons of similar to 90% selectivity in organic products at 32.7% of CO2 conversion and excellent stability of 1000 h on stream are obtained. For CO hydrogenation, 95% of C2-4 hydrocarbons, 83% of LPG or 74% of propane selectivities at > 22% CO conversion and stable more than 200 h on stream are obtained. The cooperation among the MoSx clusters and the zeolitic acid sites constitutes the catalyst of intimate bifunction, which is the key to the high catalytic performance for COx hydrogenation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into high-value chemicals has been emerging as an attractive research direction in achieving carbon resource sustainability. The chemical products can be categorized into C1 and multi-carbon (C2+) products. In this review, we describe the recent research progress in photocatalytic CO2 conversion systems from C1 products to multi-carbon oxygenates, and analyze the reasons related to their catalytic mechanisms, as the production of multi-carbon oxygenates is generally more difficult than that of C1 products. Then we discuss several examples in promoting the photoconversion of CO2 to value-added multi-carbon products in the aspects of photocatalyst design, mass transfer control, determination of active sites, and intermediate regulation. Finally, we summarize perspectives on the challenges and propose potential directions in this fast-developing field, such as the prospect of CO2 transformation to long-chain hydrocarbons like salicylic acid or even plastics.
