Human Modeling: From Physical to Digital Some efforts toward building up The Digital Human in China 1

Abstract:This presentation reviews the research and development of technologies related to Human Modeling in China, introduces the effort, the main idea and some key technologies towards building up the Chinese Digital Human with characteristics of Oriental Ethnic Groups. Visible Human Project has been initiated more than ten years ago, which is the first trial in the world to get high-precision digital images of the whole human body. The dataset is fundamental to digital anatomy. The digital human modeling awakes lasting interest even in the public. The human modeling has a long history in China. As indicated by the records, Doctor Wei-Yi Wang at the Song Dynasty (A.D. 1000 or so) made, under the order of the emperor, two human models, which were made of bronze and took the full size of real man, including the organs of the human body and the accurate distribution of the twelve regular meridians and the eight extra meridians according to traditional Chinese medicine. Thereafter, till the 1950's, more human models like that were made. They have been used for the training and examination of qualifying medical practitioners. For the simulation of blood flowing, breathing and operation of the human body, some dummy simulators were reported in the 1990's, which have the same properties with real human body, for instance, the same X-ray image, etc. One thousand years later, a new effort to build up a digital human model in China is bigining, funded by the National Hi-Tech Research and Development Plan of China. The background could be that China is the largest population country in the world. As it strengthens its economy, more and more attention has been drawn to human-related sciences and technologies. The main features of the Digital Human may focus on three aspects: modeling of blood vessels, higher precision, and integrality of data. The indication of the effort is the 174 th Xiangshan Science Conferences initiated mainly by anatomists and computer scientists, who discussed thoroughly the future cooperation on the digital human. They are determined to build a higher precision, more complete digital human, which could be applied to not only life science, but also aeronautics and the car making industry etc.
