Abstract:With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), a variety of wireless communication technologies have come up to meet the requirements of different applications in communication range, energy consumption, delay, and others. Because of the heterogeneity and communication barriers of different wireless communication technologies, heterogeneous devices can not communicate directly with each other. Due to the lack of information interaction, widely deployed heterogeneous IoT devices suffer from severe interference and the competition of spectrum resources. Moreover, the communication barriers between heterogeneous devices also limit information sharing and resource integration, and it needs extra overhead using the gateway to realize the communication between heterogeneous devices. Therefore, the research on cross-technology communication is put forward. It does not need gateways as the intermediate device for protocol conversion, which provides direct communication and satisfies the requirement of communication between heterogeneous devices. This paper first systematically analyzes and surveys the research status of cross-technology communication. On this basis, the key technologies of cross-technology communication are proposed, including packet level, signal level, and symbol level. Then, the proposed technologies are demonstrated for the anti-interference coordination application in the field of the co-existence of heterogeneous IoT devices. Finally, the prospects for cross-technology communication are discussed and concluded.

Abstract:The ever-developing Internet of Things (IoT) brings the prosperity of wireless sensing and control applications. In many scenarios, different wireless technologies coexist in the shared frequency medium as well as the physical space. Such wireless coexistence may lead to serious cross-technology interference (CTI) problems, e.g. channel competition, signal collision, throughput degradation. Compared with traditional methods like interference avoidance, tolerance, and concurrency mechanism, direct and timely information exchange among heterogeneous devices is therefore a fundamental requirement to ensure the usability, inter-operability, and reliability of the IoT. Under this circumstance, Cross-Technology Communication (CTC) technique thus becomes a hot topic in both academic and industrial fields, which aims at directly exchanging data among heterogeneous devices that follow different standards. This paper comprehensively summarizes the CTC techniques and reveals that the key challenge for CTC lies in the heterogeneity of IoT devices, including the incompatibility of technical standards and the asymmetry of connection capability. Based on the above finding, we present a taxonomy of the existing CTC works (packet-level CTCs and physical-level CTCs) and compare the existing CTC techniques in terms of throughput, reliability, hardware modification, and concurrency.

Abstract:The ever‐developing Internet of Things (IoT) drives the prosperity of ubiquitous connections among heterogeneous wireless devices (e.g. WiFi, ZigBee and Bluetooth) that follow different standards. Wireless devices share unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical bands, offering an opportunity for cross‐technology communication (CTC), where coexistence and cooperation mechanisms of wireless technologies incur the problem of coexistence. This study is purposed to present a rounded state‐of‐the‐art survey on CTC from the hardware perspective, CTC techniques are roughly divided into two types: hardware based and hardware free. In hardware‐based strategies, a dedicated hardware is required to send information to wireless devices for enabling direct communication. The hardware‐free schemes, by contrast, enable heterogeneous wireless devices to communicate directly by exchanging information or data without the dedicated hardware. Recent advances in CTC are reviewed in both types by expatiating on how heterogeneous wireless devices are achieving direct communication. The authors compare some CTCs with respect to throughput, communication range, energy efficiency and cost, in addition, they present open research issues of two types.

Abstract:In wireless communication, heterogeneous technologies such as WiFi, ZigBee and BlueTooth operate in the same ISM <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://band.With" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the exponential growth in the number of wireless devices, the ISM band becomes more and more crowded. These heterogeneous devices have to compete with each other to access spectrum resources, generating cross-technology interference (CTI). Since CTI may destroy wireless communication, this field is facing an urgent and challenging need to investigate spectrum efficiency under CTI. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework to address this problem from two aspects. On the one hand, from the perspective of each communication technology itself, we propose novel channel/link models to capture the channel/link status under CTI. On the other hand, we investigate spectrum efficiency from the perspective by taking all heterogeneous technologies as a whole and building crosstechnology communication among them. The capability of direct communication among heterogeneous devices brings great opportunities to harmoniously sharing the spectrum with collaboration rather than competition.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) connects objects to Internet through sensor devices, radio frequency identification devices and other information collection and processing devices to realize information interaction. IoT is widely used in many fields, including intelligent transportation, intelligent healthcare, intelligent home and industry. In these fields, IoT devices connected via high-speed internet for efficient and reliable communications and faster response times. The application form of the intelligent IoT should be a multi-functional integrated IoT platform product, which has a high degree of intelligence and can carry out real-time monitoring of the IoT system. The intelligent IoT can continue to learn and evolve in an open environment, constantly meet the personalized needs of users and improve the service quality. However, this also imposes new security, privacy and energy consumption challenges, which highlights the need to develop novel collaborative methodologies to tackle these challenges.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel networking paradigm which allows the communication among all sorts of physical objects over the Internet. The IoT defines a world-wide cyber-physical system with a plethora of applications in the fields of domotics, e-health, goods monitoring and logistics, among others. The use of cross-layer communication schemes to provide adaptive solutions for the IoT is motivated by the high heterogeneity in the hardware capabilities and the communication requirements among things. In this paper, a novel cross-layer module for the IoT is proposed to accurately capture both the high heterogeneity of the IoT and the impact of the Internet as part of the network architecture. The fundamental part of the module is a mathematical framework, which is developed to obtain the optimal routing paths and the communication parameters among things, by exploiting the interrelations among different layer functionalities in the IoT. Moreover, a cross-layer communication protocol is presented to implement this optimization framework in practical scenarios. The results show that the proposed solution can achieve a global communication optimum and outperforms existing layered solutions. The novel cross-layer module is a primary step towards providing efficient and reliable end-to-end communication in the IoT.

Abstract:Time synchronization is a fundamental requirement for wireless communication systems to work properly. Most of the existing studies focus on time synchronization among homogeneous devices. This work investigates time synchronization with heterogeneous technologies (e.g., WiFi, ZigBee and Bluetooth) which is important for the rising Internet of Thing (IoT) scenarios where heterogeneous devices coexist. Recent advances in Cross-Technology Communication (CTC) break the wall between heterogeneous wireless devices. In this work, we propose a new time synchronization strategy based on the CTC technique and provide a technique called TimeBee, which takes the advantage of coordination from a WiFi device to assist ZigBee devices for time synchronization. An effective method is employed so that ZigBee nodes are coordinated for time synchronization based on the received timestamps from WiFi devices. The experimental results show that TimeBee achieves global time synchronization with low time errors.

Abstract:The coexistence of heterogeneous devices in the Internet of Things wireless network brings a new topic of cross-technology communication in order to improve the communication efficiency between heterogeneous devices and promote the cooperation between heterogeneous devices. WiFi and ZigBee are the two most commonly used IoT devices in IoT environments. They have the advantages of low communication delay, high speed, low cost, and easy deployment. Since the spectrum of WiFi and ZigBee overlap, ZigBee signal will affect the transmission of CSI signal. We propose a CTC technique based on machine learning and deep learning, which uses only WiFi channel state information (CSI), and can distinguish whether there is ZigBee signal transmission in WiFi signals by classifying WiFi channel state information. In this paper, machine learning classification methods and deep learning methods are used to classify CSI sequences respectively. We extract the features of 8 CSI sequences to improve the accuracy of machine learning classifier and LSTM classifier, and adopt transformer network classifier to further improve the classification accuracy. In our experimental dataset, the highest accuracy rate can reach 94.9%. The evaluation results show that the accuracy of this method is significantly higher than the existing classification methods.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT), which enables common objects to be intelligent and interactive, is considered the next evolution of the Internet. Its pervasiveness and abilities to collect and analyze data which can be converted into information have motivated a plethora of IoT applications. For the successful deployment and management of these applications, cloud computing techniques are indispensable since they provide high computational capabilities as well as large storage capacity. This paper aims at providing insights about the architecture, implementation and performance of the IoT cloud. Several potential application scenarios of IoT cloud are studied, and an architecture is discussed regarding the functionality of each component. Moreover, the implementation details of the IoT cloud are presented along with the services that it offers. The main contributions of this paper lie in the combination of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) servers to offer IoT services in the architecture of the IoT cloud with various techniques to guarantee high performance. Finally, experimental results are given in order to demonstrate the service capabilities of the IoT cloud under certain conditions.

Enabling Global Cooperation for Heterogeneous Networks via Reliable Concurrent Cross Technology Communications

Abstract:Industrial scientific medical (ISM) band has become more and more crowded due to the ever-growing size of many mainstream technologies, e.g., Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Bluetooth. Though the coexistence issue has led to severe Cross Technology Interference (CTI), it provides great opportunities to better utilize the scarce bandwidth resources. A fundamental question is how to ensure harmonious and effective operations for different networks? To exploit it, a novel global cooperation framework is proposed. In particular, our work enables reliable concurrent Cross Technology Communication (CTC) from Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Bluetooth commodity devices. Compared to existing CTC approaches, our scheme improves the communication efficiency significantly, and hence is the foundation for effective global cooperation. Based on the proposed CTC scheme, a unified Media Access Control (MAC) approach is introduced to cooperate CTC message transmission and reception for heterogeneous networks with different MACs. Three proof-of-concepts applications, e.g., global synchronization, global CTI coordination and global Location Based Service (LBS) broadcasting are discussed to fully leverage the benefits of global cooperation. Extensive evaluations show that compared with existing schemes, the proposed framework achieves 8.1 times lower synchronization error, 9 times lower packet delivery delay, and 2.7 times lower energy consumption for acquiring LBS message.

Abstract:The exponentially increasing number of Internet of Things IoT devices and the data generated by these devices introduces the spectrum crisis at the already crowded ISM 2.4-GHz band. To address this issue and enable more flexible and concurrent communications among IoT devices, we propose $B^{2}W^{2}$ , a novel communication framework that enables $N$ -way concurrent communication among Wi-Fi and Bluetooth low energy BLE devices. Specifically, we demonstrate that it is possible to enable the BLE to Wi-Fi cross-technology communication while supporting the concurrent BLE to BLE and Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi communications. We conducted extensive experiments under different real-world settings, and results show that its throughput is more than 85$\times$ times higher than that of the most recently reported cross-technology communication system, which only supports one-way communication i.e., broadcasting at any specific time.

Abstract:The days when the Internet was the only focus of the information society have already gone, and innovative network paradigms such as IoT, cloud computing, smartphone networks, social networks, and industrial networks are gaining popularity and establishing themselves as indispensable ingredients of the future smart universe. Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced a blooming development these years. Most of the current IoT applications are built in a highly vertical way, consisting of proprietary protocols and devices. This leads to the users bound in a single service provider, poor quality of service, redundancy of the core platform functionality and delay of the whole industry. IoT over IP brings the fundamental support for global communications as well as access to services and information.
