Abstract:Kirchhoff's law is a fundamental principle widely applied in heat transfer and/or energy-saving analysis involving thermal radiation. However, the common application of Kirchhoff's law at ambient temperature often neglects the independence of surface emissivity and absorptivity. This paper presents an experiment that designed to investigate the inapplicability of Kirchhoff’s law due to neglecting the independence of emissivity and absorptivity at ambient temperature. The measurement is carried out in the experiment and a new method for calculating the emissivity is proposed which considers the independence of emissivity and absorptivity. The results show that the calculated emissivity with the new method differs apparently from the emissivity based on Kirchhoff's law, and their relative coefficient is around 0.2. Furthermore, the inapplicability of Kirchhoff's law due to neglecting the independence of surface emissivity and absorptivity can cause over 60% errors on the radiant heat flux analysis during the dynamic process of radiant heat transfer in the cases. Therefore, the traditional application of Kirchhoff's law may introduce errors in the analysis of radiant heat flux during the dynamic radiant heat transfer process, and thus leads errors for engineering application such as heating cooling load calculation of buildings.
