Abstract:Optical parametric oscillation based on a monolithic resonator is an important way to generate a coherent laser with a narrow linewidth and a wide tunable range in a long wavelength, which can be used in spectroscopy and quantum source generation. In this Letter, we demonstrate doubly resonant optical parametric oscillation with natural phase matching based on the box resonator with Q up to 5.68 x 107. Moreover, we realized a 1-mu m laser with a 1-kHz linewidth, a 200-mW output power, and a 153.94-nm wavelength tuning range. Furthermore, the monolithic box resonator has the potential to achieve a fully integrated high-power laser, and it can also be used for highly efficient spontaneous parametric down-conversion and bright narrow-band biphoton generation.

Abstract:Monolithic optical parametric oscillators extend laser frequencies in compact architectures, but normally guide and circulate all pump, signal, and idler beams. Critical frequency matching is raised among these resonances, limiting operation stability and continuous tuning. Here, we develop a box resonator geometry that guides all beams but only resonates for signal. Such noncritical frequency matching enables 227 GHz continuous tuning, with sub-10 kHz linewidth and 0.43 W power at 3310 nm. Our results confirm that monolithic resonator can be effectively used as a tunable laser including midinfrared wavelength, as further harnessed with methane fine spectral measurement at MHz accuracy.

Abstract:A widely wavelength tunable semiconductor laser based on two cascaded half-wave-coupled rectangular ring resonators is demonstrated. Vernier effect between two rectangular rings with perimeter of 281 and 305 mu m is employed to enlarge the tuning range. Simple fabrication process is used with all active waveguides. No epitaxial regrowth, grating, or high-resolution lithography is needed. By adjusting the injection currents applied to the cascaded rectangular rings synchronously, wavelength tuning of 35 channels with 100 GHz spacing is achieved with side mode suppression ratio up to 40.5 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-power, wavelength tunable mid-infrared laser with a high-precision power attenuator. The output power is 5.1W at 3.8 mu m, achieved by an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on multichannel periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The repetition frequency is 10kHz, and the pulse width is 69ns. The wavelength is tunable from 3.708 mu m to 4.142 mu m. High-precision control on the power attenuator is obtained, the accuracy of the attenuator is 0.2dB from 0 similar to 27dB.

Abstract:High-power, single-frequency lasers are important in the applications of coherent optical communication, Doppler wind lidar, and remote sensing. Here, a 10-kHz, 353-μJ, single-frequency, 574-ns, 1548-nm fiber laser system was demonstrated based on the optical pulse modulation. The 1548-nm, single-frequency seed laser with the linewidth of 1.25 kHz was modulated by two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) into a 10-kHz pulsed laser. Two cascaded fiber amplifiers were spliced after the AOMs to scale up the pulse energy. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) was inhibited by the multistage amplification construction and the optical bandpass filters. A customized pulse profile was proposed to pre-compensate the temporal modulation and inhibit the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. The pulse duration of the amplified single-frequency pulse was 574 ns, with the peak power of 753 W. A numerical model was also built for investigating the dynamic of the interaction process inside the power amplifier. The simulated results indicate the maximum output power of the 10-kHz, customized single-frequency laser can be 3.984 W with a pulse duration of 381 ns.

Abstract:An all-fiber 10.9 W single-frequency one-stage linearly-polarized master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser at 1560 nm has been demonstrated. The laser linewidth is less than 3.5 kHz and the polarization-extinction ratio (PER) is greater than 24 dB. The measured signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 70 dB and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 29.5%. No obvious stimulated Brillouin scattering and the devastating effects of unwanted coupling light were observed.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a novel 355 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser operating at ultrahigh repetition rate from 300 kHz to 1 MHz. The hybrid fiber-MOPA–bulk amplifiers based IR source exhibits a high average power of 105 W with near-diffraction-limited beam quality, narrow linewidth and high polarization extinction ratio. Two-cascaded LBO crystals are employed for high efficiency frequency tripling, and a maximum 43.7 W of average UV power is achieved at 400 kHz, corresponding to a conversion efficiency as high as 41.6%. The pulse duration of the UV pulse can be tuned from 5 to 10 ns with good pulse peak stability (better than 2.2% (RMS)).

Abstract:We realize a chip-based Brillouin microlaser with remarkable features of high power and low noise using a microtoroid resonator. Our Brillouin microlaser is able to output a power of up to 126mW with a fundamental linewidth down to 245 mHz. Additionally, in the course of Brillouin lasing we observe an intriguing power saturation-like effect, which can be attributed to complex thermo-optic-effect-induced mode mismatch between the pump and Brillouin modes. To have a quantitative understanding of this phenomenon, we develop a model by simultaneously considering Brillouin lasing and the thermo-optic effect occurring in the microcavity. Abstract:A high-pulse-energy, sub-nanosecond master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system at 1.06 mu m was demonstrated. The thermal effect in laser diode-side-pumped module was studied numerically and experimentally. The master oscillator was an electro-optically Q-switched laser with a pulse width of similar to 730 ps. Using an end-pumped preamplifier and two-stage side-pumped amplifiers, laser pulses with a pulse energy of 47.1 mJ were obtained at a repetition rate of 500 Hz, corresponding to a peak power of similar to 64.5 MW. The coefficient of variation of the pulse train was similar to 4.9%.

Abstract:An all-fiber high-power and broad-frequency-band near-shot-noise-limited kHz-linewidth (Delta nu similar to 1.7 kHz) single-frequency master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser at 1.5 mu m is demonstrated. To significantly suppress the intensity noise of seed laser and mitigate the detrimental effects of amplified spontaneous emission and stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber amplifiers, more than 23 W of a stable low noise single-frequency laser output is achieved with a relative intensity noise of < -150 dB/Hz @0.5 mW (near to the shot-noise limit: -152.9 dB/Hz) in the frequency band from 0.1 to 50 MHz. It is believed that the achieved laser performance of ultra-low intensity noise and high-power output make the laser source become a promising candidate in further applications such as cold atom optical lattice, quantum key distribution, and gravitational wave detection. Abstract:A highly efficient laser system output at the H-β Fraunhofer line of 486.1 nm has been demonstrated. A high pulse energy single-frequency hybrid 1064 nm master oscillator power amplifier was frequency-tripled to achieve355 nm laser pulses, which acted as the pump source of the beta barium borate nanosecond pulse optical parametric oscillator. With pump energy of 190 mJ, the laser system generated a maximum output of 62 mJ blue laser pulses at 486.1 nm, corresponding to conversion efficiency of 32.6%. The laser spectrum width was measured to be around 0.1 nm, being in conformity with the spectrum width of the solar Fraunhofer line.

Abstract:A 1603 nm high optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) kHz-linewidth linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) is demonstrated. To suppress the amplified spontaneous emission from Yb3+/Er3+ ions with the customized filters and optimize the length of the double cladding active fiber, an over 15 W stable single-longitudinal-mode laser is achieved with an OSNR of >70 dB. A measured laser linewidth of 4.5 kHz and a polarization-extinction ratio of >23 dB are obtained at the full output power. This L-band high-power single-frequency MOPA is promising for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy and pumping of Tm3+-doped or Tm3+/Ho3+ co-doped laser.

Abstract:We demonstrated a high-peak-power orthogonally polarized multi-wavelength laser at 1.6-1.7 µm based on the intracavity cascaded nonlinear optical frequency conversion (CNOFC). This CNOFC can be characterized by a configuration of "series-parallel optical circuit", where the OPO pumped Raman conversion operates in the "series-mode" and orthogonally-polarized waves are simultaneously converted in the "parallel-mode". The fundamental wave at 1064 nm was first simultaneously converted to orthogonally-polarized 1534 and 1572 nm by the x-cut KTA and KTP optical parametric oscillation (OPO), respectively. Then the x-cut KTA and KTP acted as the Raman crystal to each other with the X(ZZ)X Raman configuration, converting the OPO signals to multi-order Raman emissions with the wavelengths at 1601, 1632, 1673, 1697, 1752 and 1767nm. A maximum total average output power of 1.2 W and a minimum pulse width of 10.5 ns were achieved from this CNOFC-based laser, corresponding to a pulse peak power of 28.5 kW and a pulse energy of 0.3 mJ.

Abstract:We report a high-efficiency and high-power mid-IR laser generation by a periodically poled (PP) MgLN-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) working at room temperature, from which 9.23 W of output was obtained at 3.82 microm when pumped by a linearly polarized acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO(4) laser of 48.2 W output. A semi-external-cavity structure was applied in the OPO system to avoid the conversion saturation caused by the thermal lens effect of the PPMgLN crystal and thus to maintain the high conversion efficiency and the high beam quality under the high power level. It was computed that 29.4% slope efficiency and 19.2% total efficiency were realized for the 1.063-3.82 microm conversion.

Abstract:We demonstrate simultaneous lasing and parametric oscillation with high-Q (>10(10)) MgF2 monolithic microresonators. Stable lasing around 698nm is achieved with sub-25kHz linewidth and 8.8 nm tuning range. Multi-pair hyperparametric oscillation is observed over 137.2THz span.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a compact fiber laser-pumped multichannel PPMgLN-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating total OPO output power of 15.8, 15.2, 14.2, 12.9, and 8.8 W with idler output power of 4.7, 4.3, 4.1, 3.3, and 2.1 W at the wavelength of 3.43, 3.63, 3.72, 3.83, and 3.99 μm, respectively. The OPO was pumped by a fully fiberized polarization maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped pulsed fiber master oscillation power amplifier (MOPA) operating at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 65 kHz with effective pump power of 28.7 W. The MOPA system was constructed with an acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser seed and only one stage PM fiber amplifier without any free space components, which makes the pump system compact and stable in the long-term. Comparisons on efficiencies and signal wavelength shifts between different channels showed that the idler absorption was the main factor preventing high average-power OPO operation with long idler wavelength.

Abstract:A high-energy single-frequency hundred-microsecond long-pulse solid-state laser is demonstrated, which features an electro-optically modulated seed laser and two-stage double-passed pulse-pumped solid-state laser rod amplifier. Laser output with energy of 180 mJ, repetition rate of 50 Hz, and pulse width of 150 μs is achieved. The laser linewidth is measured to be less than 25.52 kHz by a fiber delay self-heterodyne method. In addition, a closed-loop controlling system is adopted to lock the center wavelength. No relaxation oscillation spikes appear in the pulse temporal profile, which is beneficial for further amplification.

Abstract:Optical resonators are indispensable tools in optical metrology that usually benefit from an evacuated and highly-isolated environment to achieve peak performance. Even in the more sophisticated design of Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities, the material choice limits the achievable quality factors. For this reason, monolithic resonators are emerging as promising alternative to traditional designs, but their design is still at preliminary stage and far from being optimized. Here, we demonstrate a monolithic FP resonator with 4.5 cm 3 volume and 2 × 10 5 finesse. In the ambient environment, we achieve 18 Hz integrated laser linewidth and 7 × 10 −14 frequency stability measured from 0.08 s to 0.3 s averaging time, the highest spectral purity and stability demonstrated to date in the context of monolithic reference resonators. By locking two separate lasers to distinct modes of the same resonator, a 96 GHz microwave signals is generated with phase noise -100 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz frequency offset, achieving orders of magnitude improvement in the approach of photonic heterodyne synthesis. The compact monolithic FP resonator is promising for applications in spectrally-pure, high-frequency microwave photonic references as well as optical clocks and other metrological devices. ©2024.
