Abstract:The pressure gradient method solves the viscous incompressible flow with the pressure gradients, rather than the pressure, as unknown variables. Different variants of the pressure gradient method have been developed in the past decades but have not received much attention due to their unsatisfactory performance or implementation complexity. Based on the artificial compressibility concept, this study proposes an improved pressure gradient method. Compared with the existing pressure gradient methods, it drops the continuity and explicit curl-free relations and requires no boundary condition for pressure gradients. An auxiliary variable is introduced to represent the velocity dilatation, greatly simplifying the spatial discretization and computational procedure. The mathematical formulations are first presented in detail, with comparisons with the previous pressure gradient methods. Then it is followed by discussions of the pressure gradient compatibility relationships, numerical implementations, and boundary condition setup. This method is further extended to create a new pressure Poisson equation, which includes a time evolution of the pressure field. Four validation examples are performed for various flow scenarios. The results agree well with the analytical or benchmark solutions, and the domain/boundary solenoidity is examined for each case. The last example also compares associated computational methods, different pressure boundary conditions, and flow characteristics. The present research work, through a series of explorations, has advanced the pressure gradient method and gained some new insights for modeling viscous incompressible flows.
