Abstract:The No Free Lunch Theorem asserts that there is no one-size-fits-all strategy capable of universally addressing all application scenarios. To tackle this limitation, multi-population algorithms have emerged, incorporating multiple populations that concurrently conduct optimization searches with diverse strategies and control parameters. Drawing inspiration from the Ecological Niche Construction concept in biology (ENC), this paper presents a novel multi-population hybrid optimization framework (ENC_MPHO). The framework comprises three subpopulations, simulating distinct characteristics of random exploration, environmental adaptation, and heritage invocation observed in ENC. The peak-seeking subpopulation randomly explores regions in the entire search space to identify potential excellent solutions, the adaptation subpopulation focuses on exploiting solutions within the current region, and the heritage subpopulation leverages knowledge from previous evolutionary processes to enhance optimization. Moreover, the subpopulation sizes dynamically adapt based on their respective efficiency. By promoting collaborative optimization among subpopulations, the ENC_MPHO framework achieves a balanced exploration-exploitation trade-off, surpassing the limitations of predefined strategies in traditional multi-population and hybrid algorithms. Moreover, this proposed framework seamlessly integrates with various specific metaheuristic algorithms, demonstrating exceptional performance on challenging optimization problems from the real world.
