Abstract:Abstract Based upon meaning holism in the philosophy of language, this article discusses issues of intercultural communication and explores the philosophical basis of cultural difference, pointing out that cultural difference does have its necessity, but can be bridged through language exchange and education under the guidance of a holistic view of language. This is so because culture essentially consists of a system of beliefs that a language user has of the world, life and society. Such being the case, this article proposes an independent, systematic and specialised curriculum for the teaching of culture so as to help students enrich their system of cultural beliefs, by virtue of questioning and speculating in an effort to find the rationale for foreign culture beliefs.
Conceptualising a Liquid Interculturality for Foreign Language Teaching: A Case Study of Higher Education Teachers in China

Abstract:Recent researchers and educators have suggested a renewed understanding for "culture" in order to transcend the essentialist perceptions that are deeply entrenched in intercultural education. This study adopted a critical, realistic liquid framework of interculturality to investigate how a group of foreign language teachers perceive and practise the content of culture and interculturality in a Chinese university. The study was conducted in a narrative inquiry style, in which interviews and journal entries were employed to collect data, and thematic and discourse analysis were combined to examine them. The data show that teachers’ understandings of cultures can be contradictory and manipulative, oscillating between simple and complex stances; despite some shortcomings, teachers are able to build a reflexivity in intercultural education classrooms, reflecting on issues related to diversity, equality and justice and taking actions in a socially responsible way. These results affirm the value of liquid interculturality as a framework for researchers to better examine teachers’ understandings in intercultural classrooms, and offer some feasible suggestions for educators to develop a critical awareness of cultural diversity and promote reflexive practices in the future.
Internet-mediated Intercultural English Language Education in China's Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:In the information age, the advent of Internet technologies has made it possible to transform language learning and teaching, through online intercultural exploration and exchange. The role of English as an international language in global communication is recognised in China's latest national guidelines for tertiary language curricula, which seek to develop professionals possessing both sound language proficiency and intercultural competence, alongside other goals such as information literacy and learner autonomy. This thesis examines the actual delivery of an intercultural dimension mediated by Internet technologies. To this end, this thesis reports an investigation into the situation of Internet-mediated intercultural English language teaching and learning at China's higher education institutions conducted between 2008 and 2009. Multi-stage and multi-site fieldwork combined a survey approach and a collective case study approach. The researcher being the primary data collection tool, data obtained from questionnaire survey, interview (and informal conversation), observation and document collection instruments have been combined. The survey findings thus not only have breadth, but also provide materials for in-depth studies of sample cases. Four cases, demonstrating a variety of institutional, individual, pedagogical and technological factors, are analysed at greater length to explore whether evidenced Internet-mediated practices might facilitate an intercultural approach to teaching and learning. Comparisons suggest that, despite their differing characteristics and contexts, there are some commonalities in terms of Internet-mediated activities entailing elements of an intercultural approach. These elements are synthesised and mapped out in an original pedagogical framework for Internet-mediated intercultural teaching and learning, with a set of guiding principles. This framework advocates establishing an Internet-mediated intra-class community as the basis for undertaking intercultural language activities, complementing the prevailing telecollaborative model for the development of intercultural communicative competence. This outcome contributes to a fuller understanding of the design of Internet-mediated intercultural language activities.

Abstract:In this qualitative study, the researchers examined the experience of a sample of language instructors in foreign language programs to identify the challenges they encountered and the strategies they applied in integrating culture into their daily teaching. The findings of this study indicated that in spite of confronting challenges in cultural teaching, language instructors have made individual efforts on culture teaching in their specific programs. The article concluded with possible implications for language teachers and suggestions for future studies.

Abstract:Dervin and Yuan’s (2022) book Revitalizing interculturality in education: Chinese Minzu as a companion challenged the lack of diversity in the disciplinary field of Intercultural Communication Education (ICE) with a detailed exploration and discussion on Chinese Minzu and Minzu education from a “non-Western” approach. By utilizing a case study research design, the authors gave voices to the participants that provided detailed narratives of concepts and practices of Chinese Minzu education at Minzu University of China (MUC). The book explored how the notion of Minzu was deconstructed and prompted readers to reckon Minzu education as a “companion, complement, and alternative” to the knowledge of interculturality in education. It added value to the international scholarship on multicultural/intercultural education by offering insights to the views, theories, and practices of Minzu education.

Abstract:In recent years, the reflection on intercultural education has focused on the importance of managing everyday situations in intercultural contexts. This focus is generally recognized as fundamental for the shift from the perspective of multiculturalism to a more interculturalist approach. An example of the interculturalist turn can be found in the EU document White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue 'Living Together As Equals in Dignity', which promotes the intercultural approach in education. In this article, referring to the later works by Michel de Certeau I will propose a theorization of the concept of everyday life, taken for granted as self-evident by the EU document and by most of the promoters of interculturalism. Furthermore, I will propose some possible deepening of it. Moreover, I will suggest that through the concept of everyday proposed by de Certeau it is possible to think of more creative ways to deal with cultural diversity.

Abstract:This chapter is built on the research data of a study with 20 Chinese university teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) regarding their intercultural competence teaching. This work also draws on our own lived experience as former EFL teachers in China and as learners and researchers in Canada (Xu, 2000; Xu & Stevens, 2005; Xu, 2006; Zhou, 2007; Xu & Connelly, 2009). In addition to linguistic competence, it is also necessary for Chinese English teachers and learners to develop intercultural competence, the ability of intercultural understanding and mediation, in order to achieve effective and smooth intercultural and international communication (Corbett, 2003).

Abstract:Based on relevant works from various disciplines (rhetoric, sociology, cognitive science, linguistics, and anthropology), this article proposes that the external world, known through species‐specific human mental capabilities, has provided all cultures with almost identical basic knowledge mutating into several structures of consciousness. It is argued that this process of knowing renders communication possible among people from diverse cultures, despite their differences. Within this theoretical frame, a qualitative analysis is offered to contrast the Chinese with the North American cultures, tracing down to a ground common to both. Three basic domains—time, space, and ego, relating to views on nature, the individual, and society— are examined in order to establish a connection to cultural traditions/conventions for social interaction. Further examination of data from interviews and participant observations locates some common difficulties in intercultural interaction between Chinese and North Americans and suggests epistemic roots as keys to potential understanding. It concludes with directions for further studies.

Abstract:This paper uses an ethnographic approach and draws critical pedagogical and sociolinguistic insights from Pierre Bourdieu to explore Chinese college students' participation in an English Corner program at an elite language university in Shanghai. Accordingly, this paper promotes scholarly conversations about intercultural communication between Chinese college students and foreign teachers from English-speaking countries. By underpinning the concepts of intercultural capital, this paper analyzes these themes: (a) linguistic habitus and capital in the stratified field of elite language education; (b) articulating English proficiency; (c) bridging cultural distance and improving intercultural competence; and (d) personal growth and professional development. This paper critically interprets Chinese college students' benefits and mutual relationships with foreign faculty from English-Speaking Countries; how they cultivated intercultural capital in the field of elite education beyond linguistic capital, how they strove to maintain their accumulated capital to secure better career prospects, and what the roles of international faculty should be.

Abstract:Based on the theoretical review of interculturality, this article argues that intercultural phenomenon is the cognitive object of intercultuali-ty. And it reveals the essence of intercultural relations and advocates inter-cultrualism in cultural and political practice. Intercultural, interculturali-ty and interculturalism are three key terms to recognize the intercultural re-lations and are the core essences of intercultural theory which adopts a di-alectical view on cultural diversity. On the one hand, intercultural theory acknowledges and accepts the fact that cultural diversity prevalently since it is a common heritage and precious wealth of humankind; one the other hand, in-tercultural theory takes cultural diversity as cultural barrier that need to overcome and deal with the intercultural paradox of how to live with differ-ences in the context of coexistence in a multi-cultural world. Intercultural theory reveals the intrinsic inter-characteristics of diversity including oth-erness and sameness, relationality and interactivity, and helps to establish the formula for how to live with differences in hyper-diverse areas. Intercul-turality serves as a prerequisite for recognizing the diversity, respecting otherness, seeking sameness that whether culture can coexist with the same meaning of the intercultural characteristics, and revealing the inter-related-ness in the context in which intercultural encounter commits to strengthen the interaction between the heterogeneous cultures in the premise of mutual sub-jectivity. The enlightenment of intercultural theory on social & cultural ge-ography can be applied in the research on intercultural situation, space (place) thinking, race and ethnic geography, indigenous geographies, geogra-phies of identity and intercultural city.

Abstract:There is a significant amount of literature in which the educational question concerning intercultural communication is seen in terms of providing students with the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and competencies that will enable them to become effective intercultural communicators. While this line of thought seems to have become the 'common sense' of much educational policy, there is also a growing body of research in which critical questions are raised about this approach. There are particular concerns about the totalising tendencies in such approaches, and ethics is often mobilised as a way to understand and enact the intercultural encounter differently. In this paper, I contribute to these discussions from an educational perspective. I contrast a pedagogy of empowerment with a pedagogy of disarmament, show how the idea of culture functions as an explanatory device, raise the question of time in intercultural encounters, and argue that an ethical 'turn' may run the risk of becoming another totalising gesture in intercultural communication. Through these explorations, I outline the contours of a pedagogy for intercultural communication beyond culture and without ethics in which the central challenge is that of trying to become 'contemporaneous'. I pay particular attention to what this may require from the teacher.

Abstract:This practice-based research is a visitor experience engagement framework applied in cultural institutions. We revisit O’Doherty`s (1999) Inside the White Cube as a lens to the attention-experience economy. The White Cube precedes digital technology and 24/7 contemporaneous experiences. What principles derived from the ‘White Cube’ inform contemporary experience consumption? How are designers to consider stakeholder experiences in cultural institutions? We employ contextual analysis and experience researcher introspection including people, place, objects, rules, relationships, and blocking mapped with ‘White Cube’ ideology. We document a table informed by white cube themes for the future visitor engagement framework for cultural institutions.

Abstract:Using Chinese language teaching in an engineering department as an example, this paper explores how language teaching can meet the challenges of globalisation and the advancement of technology by fulfilling its educational function as described in Byram's model of intercultural communicative competence. By adapting theories and practices from counselling psychology, the proposed curriculum focuses on emotions to help learners uncover emotional barriers that arise when confronted with differences. It will support learners in raising awareness and developing their capacity to negotiate differences, leading to more effective cooperation with others. The paper discusses the use of experiential exercises in the classroom. They include those developed in Chinese language pedagogy, namely the performed culture approach and those developed in humanistic psychotherapy, such as body psychotherapy. The aim is to help learners notice their own feelings, attitudes, and behaviour as well as the otherness of the other in the classroom. This approach is powerful because it is in the here and now. It utilises movements and different senses as well as cognition. It helps uncover barriers to intercultural communication hidden under the surface by making the unconscious conscious. Reflection is a key part of this process. Learners are expected to reflect on their own thinking and feelings and to make sense of the dynamics in the classroom. Learners are expected to develop reflexivity, subjectivity and intersubjective awareness while acquiring linguistic competency and social cultural rules of use.

Abstract:Based on ethnographic data, the present study examines how being critical has been understood, valued and practiced among students enrolled in international English-as-the-medium-of-instruction (EMI) Master's porgrammes in a top-rated comprehensive university in China. Drawing on the Foucauldian ethico-political axes of self-formation, this article presents three case studies and finds that international and local students form critical selves in diverse ways as influenced by lived experiences of interculturality at personal, institutional and disciplinary levels. The Foucauldian axes enable a holistic understanding of students' formation of critical selves in relation to their past, present and prospective intercultural life trajectories as situated within the social and institutional contexts. It also helps call for a culturally-enriching, self-reflexive approach to critical pedagogy in the context of internationalization of higher education that breaks away from theoretical conceptions of critical thinking as traditionally grounded on essentialist views on cultures and relevant pedagogical norms.

Abstract:In this commentary we argue that in order to understand how joint understanding arises out of activity, a cultural examination of communication and interaction must be included in the analysis. In their article “The tension between dialogicality and interobjectivity in cooperative activities,” Talamo and Pozzi (2011) argue that intersubjectivity should be thought of as a process that occurs in group interaction and collaboration. We agree with the authors that intersubjectivity is not something that is located inside people’s heads and that intersubjectivity is not “mind reading.” However, we argue that their plan of analysis lacks an examination of the cultural milieu in which both the personal and the social happen. By not bringing a cultural lens to bear in their analysis they have privileged verbal interactions and painted an incomplete picture of the phenomenon. We provide evidence from cultural comparative work on the different ways that joint understanding and joint activity can be viewed culturally to highlight how cultural understandings of communication are key in interaction.

Abstract:As we move more and more towards a world that is globalized, it has become increasingly important for people in different cultures to communicate well together; this is particularly urgent in language classes. This research seeks to identify mechanisms through which students from various nations can interact in a way that fosters intercultural understanding. The study incorporates both qualitative data obtained from interviews and an analysis of relevant literature utilizing mixed methods research techniques. The major findings indicate that incorporating intercultural competence into language instruction can greatly enhance learner’s empathy, adaptability and cultural awareness. Such skills are vital while navigating multicultural interactions and ultimately help students become better world citizens. The study emphasizes the need to integrate intercultural communication training in language programs to create more inclusive and peaceful learning spaces.

Abstract:Power relations and change have become two of the most important foci of intercultural communication education and research. This paper contributes to these two elements by problematising and operating an analytical framework from outside the 'West', the Chinese notion of Zhongyong (the 'Golden Mean'). Based on a dialogical analysis of focus groups collected during an art course, the paper shows that Zhongyong can expand and complexify our understanding of interculturality, looking into how e.g. the students balance otherness with otherness (or not), as well as make use of reflectivity and criticality (or not) to implement potential change when cooperating. Les relations de pouvoir et le changement représentent deux des plus importants concepts en éducation et recherche interculturelles. Cet article contribue à ces deux éléments en problématisant et en exploitant un cadre analytique extérieur à « l'Occident », la notion chinoise de Zhongyong (le « juste milieu »). Sur la base d'une analyse dialogique de groupes de discussion recueillis lors d'un cours d'art, l'article montre que Zhongyong peut élargir et complexifier notre compréhension de l'interculturalité, en examinant comment, par exemple, les étudiants équilibrent l'altérité avec l'altérité (ou non).

Intercultural Competence Based on Collective Learning in Association with Intangible Cultural Heritage: Experiences in a Study Abroad Program and a Digital Environment

Abstract:This article describes the impact of a didactic proposal implemented in a visual arts course which intends to promote intercultural competences and work on identity awareness through collective learning activities, using the framework of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Firstly, the term “collective learning” is defined in the context of humanities teaching as a multimodal and multi-source process of learning that contemplates the feedback between the individual the collective. Secondly, the framework of ICH is presented. Lastly, a quantitative comparative analysis of data from two different versions of the same course is performed: Group 1 in an in-person study abroad context and Group 2 in a remote environment. The examination of the results offers insight on a generalized effective acquisition of intercultural competences following the framework while highlighting the translation of study abroad elements of collective learning into the digital environment as a means to promote horizontal learning and self-assessment. Abstract in Spanish Este artículo describe los resultados de una propuesta didáctica implementada en un curso de artes visuales que pretende promocionar la competencia intercultural y trabajar la conciencia identitaria a través de actividades de aprendizaje colectivo y usando el marco teórico del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad de la UNESCO (ICH por sus siglas en inglés). Primero se describe el término “aprendizaje colectivo” en el contexto de la educación de humanidades como un proceso de aprendizaje multimodal que integra múltiples inputs y que contempla la retroalimentación entre lo individual y lo colectivo. Posteriormente, se presenta el marco teórico del ICH. Por último, se realiza un análisis comparativo de datos de dos versiones diferentes del mismo curso: el Grupo 1 siendo presencial en un contexto de estudio en el extranjero y el Grupo 2 siendo de aprendizaje a distancia. El estudio de los resultados indica una adquisición generalizada de competencias interculturales dentro del marco teórico, a la vez que enfatiza como la traslación de elementos de aprendizaje colectivo en estudios en el extranjero al ámbito digital puede funcionar como un elemento que promueva el aprendizaje horizontal y la autoevaluación.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Different value systems, coupled with diverging communication styles and behaviours can build up into stern instances of miscommunication and conflict among cultural groups, both within and across societies. In this spirit, my paper probes the following question: How can learners of intercultural studies attain the flair to understand the dynamics of intercultural contact and the practical skills to successfully engage with cultural diversity? This is tested against the postulation which states that learners of intercultural studies can scarcely generate a trans-cultural competence in an eight-week lecture series. With this in mind and through the intercultural studies lecture series, my main objective is to call attention to the significance of cultivating empathy which becomes pivotal in the intercultural perception enacted by and cultivated in the Master 1 (Sociolinguistics and Gender Studies) inter-culturality classroom. The research tool employed in the present study is: An eight week structured observation describing the intercultural studies lecture series in action. This includes the distribution of 4 assignments to students which aims at gauging the development of their intercultural sensitiveness all along the eight week lecture series in the light of their classroom interactions. Issues relating to colonialism, religion, gender, racism, prejudice, interdependence and many more are also closely summoned up in the wake of such interactions. The strategy implemented throughout the course elaborates chiefly on Sitaram and Cogdell’s Value Classification Chart (1976) which contrasts mainstream values at work in different cultural environments, and the Worldwork’s Framework of International Competencies (2010) which propounds manoeuvres for trans-cultural sensitivity.
