Abstract:Iron and nitrogen codoped carbon (Fe-N-C) materials have a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts for the carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reaction (CO₂RR); however, the influence of oxidation state, spin state, N-type and local environment of Fe-N on its catalytic activity remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed the density functional theory (DFT) to evaluate the catalytic activity of the pyridine-type FeII/IIIN₄ motifs at the armchair- and zigzag-edge, the pyrrole-type FeN₄ sites in the bulk plane of carbon-based materials for two-electron CO₂RR in the different spin states by analyzing the stability of initial reactants, free-energy evolutions and energy barriers for the possible elementary reactions. The analyses of free-energy evolutions reveal that the catalytic activity of FeN₄ sites is not only modulated by their position in the carbon materials and N-type (pyridinic N and pyrrolic N), but also involves the oxidation state, spin state and spin coupling of the center Fe ions. The Fe ions in the pyridine-type edge-hosted FeN₄ are main +2 oxidation state, which uses the high spin state in the spin uncoupling manner to achieve the most efficient CO₂-COOH-CO conversion at the armchair edge. On the contrary, the zigzag-edge FeIIN₄ employs the medium spin in the spin coupling manner to perform the highest catalytic activity for the two-electron CO₂RR. However, the Fe ions in the pyrrole-type bulk-hosted FeN₄ mainly keep +3 valence during the conversion process of CO₂ to CO and utilize the medium spin with the spin coupling manner to obtain the highest catalytic activity. The corresponding kinetic analyses show that the armchair-edge FeIIN₄ catalyst has the best catalytic performance among the three cases. Consequently, these findings present significant insights into the design of Fe single-atom catalysts for enhancing CO₂RR catalytic activity through facilitating the formation of more armchair-edge FeN₄ sites, which may fabricate by introducing micropores in the carbon materials.
