Abstract:Controlling the assembly of nanobuilding blocks is one of the key issues to develop nanomaterials and nanodevices. A series of methods which aimed at the asymmetric modification of nanoparticles are developed recently, providing a novel and efficient strategy towards controlled assembly of nanoparticles. These methods can modify isotropic nanoparticles to be anisotropic, thus the desired nanobuilding blocks can be prepared from ordinary functional nanoparticles. This review aims at combining the recent scientific literatures to introduce and summarize the approaches of asymmetric modification of nanoparticles,as well as the controlled assembly based on them. Furthermore, the problems those still should be resolved are pointed out, and the direction of this research field is discussed. The prospect of the application is also expected.

Abstract:The well control over the cell-nanoparticle interaction can be of great importance and necessity for different biomedical applications. In this work, we propose a new and simple way (i.e., polymeric tether) to tuning the interaction between nanoparticles and cell membranes by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. It is found that the linked nanoparticles (via polymeric tether) can show some cooperation during the cellular uptake and thereby have a higher wrapping degree than the single nanoparticle. The effect of the property of the polymer on the wrapping is also investigated, and it is found that the length, rigidity, and hydrophobicity of the polymer play an important role. More interestingly, the uptake of linked nanoparticles could be adjusted to the firm adhesion via two rigid polymeric tethers. The present study may provide some useful guidelines for novel design of functional nanomaterials in the experiments.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been successfully modified with CuO, Cu2O and Cu nanoparticles via a simple method, and the calcination temperature, the amount of NH3·H2O and soaking time play critical roles in controlling the final products. The modified MWNTs have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrum, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopies. Optical absorption of the obtained products has also been investigated, and the quantum confinement effect was illustrated in the absorption spectra.

Abstract:The functional versatility of a chemical system is ultimately dictated by the availability of distinctly accessible architectures. The generation of a diverse array of assembled constructs from a single type of nanoscale building block is a promising yet largely elusive goal. We report herein the utility of a monolayer-modified nanoparticle for the creation of a broad range of architectures. The versatile modes of assembly complement the conventionally used, amphiphilicity-driven strategy. We demonstrate that one can vary the nanoparticle assembly pathways within the confines of solvent media through the modulation of interactions and partitioning of nanoparticles. Merging of the molecular-scale design and higher-ordered arrangement enables diversified assembly through the manipulation of experimental parameters such as solvent, pH, affinity molecule, and temperature. Microfluidics provides an effective channel to control the monodispersity and size on all the architectures attainable in the bulk solution phase. These observations could be further explored for an understanding of diversified matter organization and order generation beyond the amphiphilicity paradigm.

Abstract:In the past few decades, there has been great interest in the monofunctionalization of inorganic nanoparticles using organic chemistry tool. However, the uncontrollability in the degree of nanoparticle functionalization and the number of functional groups on the nanoparticles restrict their applications. It is now realized that precisely controlling the composition of the nanoparticles (NPs) will be of great importance for many biomedical applications. In this review, we will focus on using organic chemistry tools for monofunctionalization of inorganic nanoparticles, biomedical applications of monofunctionalized NPs, and then also discuss recent advances and future prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently known as novel precursors in nanomaterial synthesis.To understand the mechanism behind the phase transformation in atomic scale, we apply in-situ X-ray pair-distribution analysis to monitor the whole process, from distortion, destabilization, partial reduction, to the eventual nanoparticle formation and defect evolution of a series of bimetallic MOFs PCN-250.These MOFs with different trimeric node composition (Fe3, Fe2Co, and Fe2Ni) allow us to control the structure, chemistry, and defect of resulting nanoparticles.Notably, we found selective reduction of Ni from the node with defect-rich frameworks retained.This can be a new route for future MOFs crystal engineering.Figure 1.The structure of MOFs and resulting nanophases are tracked through PDF analysis.

Abstract:This feature article reviews some strategies and realizations for manipulating and tailoring the physical and chemical properties of zero dimensional (0-D) and one dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials as well as reveals the underlying mechanism. A series of high-resolution characterization techniques, such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM), conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM), and spatially resolved cathodoluminescence (CL), have been used in this study, which enable us to investigate the morphologies, structures and properties of individual nanomaterials experimentally. Some theoretical quantum chemistry methods such as tightbinding (TB) and density functional theory (DFT) are also applied for better understanding the experimental phenomena. Our results demonstrate that deliberate control at atomic and molecular scale, such as fabricating ordered and disordered metal nanoparticles, growing designed heterostructures, doping or grafting single molecules, and changing geometry (e. g., aspect ratio, tip sharpness, size, and surface ratio), can dramatically tailor the properties of the 0-D and 1-D nanomaterials. The results shown here can be extended to various nanomaterials and nanodevices, and therefore are useful for versatile applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been successfully modified with ZnO nanostructures by zinc–ammonitum complex ion covalently attached to the MWNTs through the C–N bonds. Flower-like ZnO on the tips of MWNTs and ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of MWNTs have been obtained, respectively, via adjusting the reaction time. The modified MWNTs have been characterized with X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. A growth mechanism has been proposed in which the soaking time plays a key role in controlling the size, morphology, and site of ZnO nanostructures. Photoluminescence properties of the as-synthesized products have also been investigated.

Abstract:Nanocontainers have great potentials in targeted drug delivery and nanospace-confined reactions. However, the previous synthetic approaches exhibited limited control over the morphology, size and materials of the nanocontainers, which are crucial in practical applications. Here, we present a synthetic approach to multi-segment linear-shaped nanopores with pre-designed morphologies inside anodic aluminium oxide (AAO), by tailoring the anodizing duration after a rational increase of the applied anodizing voltage and the number of voltage increase during Al foil anodization. Then, we achieve nanocontainers with designed morphologies, such as nanofunnels, nanobottles, nano-separating-funnels and nanodroppers, with tunable sizes and diverse materials of carbon, silicon, germanium, hafnium oxide, silica and nickel/carbon magnetic composite, by depositing a thin layer of materials on the inner walls of the pre-designed AAO nanopores. The strategy has far-reaching implications in the designing and large-scale fabrication of nanocontainers, opening up new opportunities in nanotechnology applications.

Abstract:Precise control of molecular hierarchical organization has endowed biological systems with unique functions, which inspires great efforts in the synthesis of artificial mimics. Polymeric single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) with tunable microstructure and composition and distinct compartmentalization features are regarded as an ideal platform for biomimetic architectures. SCNPs represent an intermediate state between polymer and colloidal matter and are constructed by intramolecular crosslinking of linear polymers with tailored composition and topology. The microstructure of the SCNPs is broadly tunable from individual particle, to tadpole-shaped and dimer by using the polymers with different sequential distribution. It is noted that cyclic polymers are regarded as specific SCNPs with well-defined number of knotting (crosslinking). Functional composite hybrids are derived whose head and chain parts are greatly enriched in composition and microstructure via selective growth of functional materials or post-modification. Synergistic effects can emerge through hybridization of functionalities of the colloidal nanoparticles and characteristics of the polymer chains. These hybrids are attractive for applications such as the fabrication of novel superstructures that mimic catalytic functionalities of enzymes. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis of SCNP based functional hybrid nanoparticles. Large-scale synthetic approaches of the hybrid nanoparticles are highlighted. The use of SCNP as platform for functional hybrid nanoparticles is subsequently illustrated by applications such as biomimetic catalysis, interfacial engineering and biomedicine.
Nanoparticles-induced morphological transformation in block copolymer-based nanocomposites

Abstract:By controlling the chemical composition and the spatial organization of nanoparticles, hybrid nanocomposites incorporating ordered arrangements of nanoparticles could be endowed with exotic physical and chemical properties to fulfill demands in advanced electronics or energy harvesting devices. However, a simple method to fabricate hybrid nanocomposites with precise control of nanoparticles distribution is still challenging. We demonstrate that block copolymer-based nanocomposites containing well-ordered nanoparticles with various morphologies can be readily obtained by adjusting the nanoparticle concentration. Moreover, the structural evolution of nanocomposite thin films as a function of nanoparticle loading is unveiled by grazing-incidence transmission small-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy. The morphological transformation proceeds through a phase transition from perforated lamellae to in-plane cylinders layout, followed by structural changes. The successful achievement of a variety of morphologies represents an effective and straightforward approach to producing functional hybrid nanocomposites for potential applications in various functional devices.

This article mainly focuses on the shape and size control of nanoparticles with organic stabilizers, which have one (or more) coordination group and long alkyl chain. The organic stabilizers can also be used as the templates of nanoparticle self-assembly. We then discuss the current status of controlled growth of nanoprticles and their self-asembly.

Abstract:This article illustrates the design and fabrication of various unimolecular micelles including star polymers and brushes as well as their multifunctional applications. These unimolecular micelles with high stability exhibit great potential as nanoreactor and nanocarrier. It is believed that unimolecular micelles can pave new ways for future built of intelligent nanoplatforms. Unimolecular micelles (UMs) are nano‐sized structures that are composed of single molecules with precise composition. Compared to self‐assembled polymeric micelles, UMs possess ultra‐stable property even in complex biological environment. With the development of controllable polymerization and coupling chemistry, the preparation of narrowly monodispersed UMs with precise morphology and size has been realized, which further facilitates their multifunctional applications. After brief introduction, state‐of‐the‐art advances in the synthesis and applications of UMs are discussed with an emphasis on their bioapplications. It is believed that these UMs have great potential in future fabrication of multifunctional nanoplatforms.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are key to a range of applications, due to the properties that emerge as a result of their small size. However, their size also presents challenges to their processing and use, especially in relation to their immobilization on solid supports without losing their favorable functionalities. Here, we present a multifunctional polymer-bridge-based approach to attach a range of presynthesized nanoparticles onto microparticle supports. We demonstrate the attachment of mixtures of different types of metal-oxide nanoparticles, as well as metal-oxide nanoparticles modified with standard wet chemistry approaches. We then show that our method can also create composite films of metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles by exploiting different chemistries simultaneously. We finally apply our approach to the synthesis of designer microswimmers with decoupled mechanisms of steering (magnetic) and propulsion (light) via asymmetric nanoparticle binding, aka Toposelective Nanoparticle Attachment. We envision that this ability to freely mix available nanoparticles to produce composite films will help bridge the fields of catalysis, nanochemistry, and active matter toward new materials and applications.

Abstract:A novel method for synthesizing arrays of uniform sub-2 nm particles on substrates is described. Such particles are made by (i) using dip-pen nanolithography to prepare nanoreactors consisting of metal-coordinated polymers; (ii) designing polymers with only one metal atom attached to each polymer chain; (iii) systematically controlling nanoreactor volume down to the yoctoliter scale; and (iv) transforming each nanoreactor into a metal nanoparticle through thermal annealing. Polymer design in this study is crucial, since it allows one to tightly control nanoparticle size by tuning the volume of the polymer reactors, which correlates with the number of polymer chains and, therefore, metal atoms. Mixtures of different metal-functionalized polymers were used to synthesize ultrasmall alloy particles. The technique and results described herein point toward a way of using these novel polymers to systematically explore the properties and uses of this important class of nanomaterials in many fields.
Controllable Engineering and Functionalizing Nanoparticles with Specific Targeting Capability

Abstract:Abstract Due to unique properties, nanoparticles been widely used in important biomedical applications such as imaging, drug delivery and disease therapy. Targeting toward specific proteins is essential for the effective utilization of nanoparticles. However, current targeting strategies mainly rely on surface modification with bio-ligands, which often not only fail to provide desired properties but also remain challenging. Here we report an unprecedented approach, called reverse microemulsion-confined epitope-oriented surface imprinting and cladding (ROSIC), for facile, versatile and controllable engineering coreless and core/shell nanoparticles with tunable monodispersed size as well as specific targeting capability towards proteins and peptides. Via engineering coreless imprinted and cladded silica nanoparticles, the effectiveness and superiority over conventional imprinting of the proposed approach was first verified. The prepared nanoparticles exhibited both high specificity and high affinity. Using quantum dots (QDs), superparamagnetic nanoparticles, silver nanoparticles and upconverting nanoparticles as a representative set of core substrates, a variety of dual-functional single-core/shell nanoparticles were then successfully prepared. Finally, selective fluorescence imaging of triple negative breast cancer cells over other breast cancer cell lines using QD-cored nanoparticles was achieved, which well demonstrated the potential of the prepared core/shell nanoparticles in biomedical applications. Thus, this approach opened a new avenue to engineering and functionalization of advanced nanoparticles with targeting capability, holding great prospects in biomedical applications.
Controllable Synthesis and Biological Properties of Unimolecular Polymer Nanomaterials

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern organic chemistry and polymer chemistry, a variety of highly efficient and controllable synthetic methods have been discovered and applied extensively, such as click chemistry, atom transfer radical polymerization, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Their comprehensive application has realized the controlled preparation of unimolecular polymer nanomaterials with well-designed topological structures, including cyclodextrane polyrotaxanes, dendrimers, multiarm star-shaped polymers, wormlike polymer brushes, etc. Functioning as probes and drug carriers for disease diagnoses and treatments, respectively, these specifically fabricated materials are featured with such advantages as high designability, controllability, and stability of chemical structures, favorable reproducibility of pharmacokinetic and pharmacological profiles, great abundancy in reactive groups for multiple functionalization, and desirable ability to covalent-combine drugs for responsive targeted drug release. The highly controllable chemical structures of these unimolecular polymer nanomaterials make them the most suitable objects for studying the relationship between chemical and morphological structures and biological performance. Herein, the recent progress of our group is introduced, with specific focuses on the preparation of unimolecular polymer nanomaterials through controllable synthetic strategies, the precise control of their chemical structures and sizes, and the effect of their chemical structures and sizes on their in vitro and in vivo biological performance. The objectives of our research include cyclodextrane polyrotaxanes, dendrimers, multiarm star-shaped polymers, and wormlike polymer brushes, and their sizes range from several nanometers to dozens of nanometers. Based on our experiments, some important conclusions have been drawn as follows. Within the dimensional range between ten nanometers and dozens of nanometers, the size reduction of such nanomaterials favors higher cellular uptake, shorter blood circulation, as well as higher tumor accumulation and penetration. Besides, the nanomaterials with zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine) (PCB) surface exhibit higher cellular uptake, longer blood circulation, and higher tumor accumulation and penetration than those with the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) surface do thanks to the surface-tethered phenylboronic acid groups. These results can be much conducive to the design of polymer nanocarriers for tumor diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract:"Nano‐metamaterials," a novel class of metamaterials, are introduced, which are rationally designed materials with multilevel microarchitectures and both characteristic sizes and whole sizes at the nanoscale, investing in themselves remarkably unique material properties as compared with conventional nanomaterials. A dual‐kinetic control strategy to fabricate nano‐metamaterials is presented, regulating osmotically driven self‐emulsification and nonsolvent‐induced block copolymer self‐assembly simultaneously. Increasingly intricate in their multilevel multiscale microarchitecture, metamaterials with unique physical properties are challenging the inherent constraints of natural materials. Their applicability in the nanomedicine field still suffers because nanomedicine requires a maximum size of tens to hundreds of nanometers; however, this size scale has not been achieved in metamaterials. Therefore, "nano‐metamaterials," a novel class of metamaterials, are introduced, which are rationally designed materials with multilevel microarchitectures and both characteristic sizes and whole sizes at the nanoscale, investing in themselves remarkably unique and significantly enhanced material properties as compared with conventional nanomaterials. Microarchitectural regulation through conventional thermodynamic strategy is limited since the thermodynamic process relies on the frequency‐dependent effective temperature, Teff(ω), which limits the architectural regulation freedom degree. Here, a novel dual‐kinetic control strategy is designed to fabricate nano‐metamaterials by freezing a high‐free energy state in a Teff(ω)‐constant system, where two independent dynamic processes, non‐solvent induced block copolymer (BCP) self‐assembly and osmotically driven self‐emulsification, are regulated simultaneously. Fe3+‐"onion‐like core@porous corona" (Fe3+‐OCPCs) nanoparticles (the products) have not only architectural complexity, porous corona and an onion‐like core but also compositional complexity, Fe3+ chelating BCP assemblies. Furthermore, by using Fe3+‐OCPCs as a model material, a microstructure‐biological performance relationship is manifested in nano‐metamaterials.

Abstract:DNA-nanoparticle conjugates have found widespread use in sensing, imaging, and as components of devices. However, their synthesis remains relatively complicated and empirically based, often requiring specialized protocols for conjugates of different size, valence, and elemental composition. Here we report a novel, bottom-up approach for the synthesis of DNA-nanoparticle conjugates, based on ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), intramolecular crosslinking, and template synthesis. Using size, valence, and elemental composition as three independent synthetic parameters, various conjugates can be obtained using a facile and universal procedure. Examples are given to show the usefulness of these conjugates as sensing probes, building blocks for self-assembly, and as model particles for structure-property relationship studies.
