Abstract:Due to the isolation and fabrication of a rapidly increasing number of 2D materials, extensive attention is drawn to investigate 2D materials for scientific and technological studies as well as potential applications. In recent years, a series of significant and fascinating properties have been found and further modified in graphene and graphene‐like 2D layered materials. Among them, luminescence is one of the important investigation aspects, which is relevant to the unique structural, carrier transport, photonic, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. Herein, a general overview of recent advances of luminescence in 2D systems, including 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, is given. This review article provides an insight into the mechanism of luminescence and the luminescent characterizations and performance as well as the methods employed to modulate the luminescence behaviors of 2D systems. A number of recent works are introduced to specifically describe the new developments of photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and nonlinear optics in 2D materials. Then, the applications of luminescence in 2D systems are discussed in terms of optoelectronics and biological fields. By summarizing the importance of luminescence in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, the challenges and opportunities for future investigation and applications are highlighted. Luminescence in 2D materials is not only essential for structural and properties' characterization but also significantly important for device applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and future quantum technologies. Herein, recent advances and new developments in luminescence are reviewed, including the luminescent mechanism, characterizations, performance, and applications based on 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Inorganic luminescent semiconductors have triggered burgeoning research interest in all‐solid‐state light‐emitting devices over the past decades owing to their band‐to‐band transitions along with their high efficiency and excellent long‐term stability compared with most organic luminescent materials. Recent booming developments in 2D materials demonstrate their fascinating tunable layer‐dependent electronic structures, strong light–matter interactions, high carrier mobilities, and broad spectral ranges at the 2D limit, which are promising for high‐performance light‐emitting devices. Here, state‐of‐the‐art 2D luminescent nanomaterials are reviewed from the fundamental aspects of crystal structures and electronic properties to practical applications, providing insights into the luminescence mechanism. Many research paradigms are comprehensively discussed to elaborate ingenious luminescence modulation strategies through control of the microstructure, such as the number of layers, defects, morphologies, charge carriers, heterostructures, and surface states of 2D systems. Promising applications of 2D luminescent systems in light‐emitting diodes, lasers, and bioimaging and biosensing devices are systematically illustrated. Finally, by summarizing the luminescence in 2D materials, challenges are proposed, which will provide new opportunities for developing 2D luminescence physics, luminescent materials, and related light‐emitting device applications.

Abstract:This review highlights recent advancements in 2D‐based IR emitters across the NIR, SWIR, and MWIR regions. It explores the photoluminescence properties of 2D materials, vdW engineering techniques for IR LEDs, and the role of external stimuli in tuning emission wavelengths. The review also examines the integration of 2D emitters with photonic structures and discusses the challenges and future prospects of 2D‐based IR technologies. Infrared (IR) emitters have drawn considerable attention for applications in deep‐tissue imaging, optical communication, and thermal sensing. While III‐V and II‐VI semiconductors are traditionally used in these emitters, their reliance on complex epitaxial growth to overcome lattice mismatch and thermal expansion challenges leads to intricate device structures and limits their integrability. In contrast, 2D materials provide a more flexible solution, offering diverse optical bandgaps and the ability to be vertically restacked in arbitrary crystal orientations to form complex van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, which can be further integrated onto diverse device platforms. This review highlights recent advancements in 2D‐based IR emitters, focusing on the NIR, SWIR, and MWIR regions. It discusses the photoluminescence properties of 2D materials and innovative vdW engineering techniques used to develop IR light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). The review also explores how external stimuli, such as electric fields and strain, can enable tunable emission wavelengths and examines the integration of 2D‐based emitters with photonic structures, like cavities and waveguides, to create hybrid photonic devices. Finally, the review addresses the challenges and prospects of 2D‐based IR technologies, highlighting their potential to transform IR light sources across various applications.

Abstract:The extraordinary electronic, optical, and mechanical characteristics of 2D materials make them promising candidates for optoelectronics, specifically in infrared (IR) detectors owing to their flexible composition and tunable optoelectronic properties. This review presents the recent progress in IR detectors composed of 2D materials and their hybrid structures, including graphene, black phosphorous, transition metal dichalcogenides, halide perovskite as well as other new layered materials and their heterostructures. The focus is on the short‐wave, mid‐wave, and long‐wave infrared regimes, which pose a grand challenge for rational materials and device designs. The dependence of the device performance on the optical and electronic properties of 2D materials is extensively discussed, aiming to present the general strategies for designing optoelectronic devices with optimal performance. Furthermore, the recent results on 2D material‐based heterostructures are presented with an emphasis on the relationship between band alignment, charge transfer, and IR photodetection. Finally, a summary is given as well as the discussion of existing challenges and future directions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered considerable attention due to their advantageous properties, including tunable bandgap, prominent carrier mobility, tunable response and absorption spectral band, and so forth. The above-mentioned properties ensure that 2D materials hold great promise for various high-performance infrared (IR) applications, such as night vision, remote sensing, surveillance, target acquisition, optical communication, etc. Thus, it is of great significance to acquire better insight into IR applications based on 2D materials. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of 2D materials in IR light emission device applications. First, we introduce the background and motivation of the review, then the 2D materials suitable for IR light emission are presented, followed by a comprehensive review of 2D-material-based spontaneous emission and laser applications. Finally, further development directions and challenges are summarized. We believe that milestone investigations of 2D-material-based IR light emission applications will emerge soon, which are beneficial for 2D-material-based nano-device commercialization.

Abstract:Following the development of many novel two-dimensional (2D) materials, investigations of van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWHs) have attracted significant attention due to their excellent properties such as smooth heterointerface, highly gate-tunable bandgap, and ultrafast carrier transport. Benefits from the atom-scale thickness, physical and chemical properties and ease of manipulation of the heterojunctions formulated by weak vdW forces were demonstrated to indicate their outstanding potential in electronic and optoelectronic applications, including photodetection and energy harvesting, and the possibility of integrating them with the existing semiconductor technology for the next-generation electronic and sensing devices. In this review, we summarized the recent developments of vdWHs and emphasized their applications. Basically, we introduced the physical properties and some newly discovered phenomena in vdWHs. Then, we emphatically presented four classical vdWHs and some novel heterostructures formed by vdW forces. Based on their unique physical properties and structures, we highlighted the applications of vdWHs including in photodiodes, phototransistors, tunneling devices, and memory devices. Finally, we provided a conclusion on the recent advances in vdWHs and outlined our perspectives. We aim for this review to serve as a solid foundation in this field and to pave the way for future research on vdW-based materials and their heterostructures.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (2D vdW HSs) can be constructed by stacking different 2D materials together in nearly endless ways, and have significantly enriched the 2D materials family. They have attracted intense research attention effort, due to their exotic physical properties and intriguing device performance, often beyond those found in their constituent 2D materials. Here we review research progresses in this emerging 2D system, including fabrication methods, material properties, device applications, and offer our perspectives on emerging research opportunities in this highly active area.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted significant attention in recent decades due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Among them, to meet the growing demand for multifunctional applications, 2D organic-inorganic van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions have become increasingly popular in the development of optoelectronic devices. These heterojunctions demonstrate impressive capability to synergistically combine the favourable characteristics of organic and inorganic materials, thereby offering a wide range of advantages. Also, they enable the creation of innovative device structures and introduce novel functionalities in existing 2D materials, avoiding the need for lattice matching in different material systems. Presently, researchers are actively working on improving the performance of devices based on 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions by focusing on enhancing the quality of 2D materials, precise stacking methods, energy band regulation, and material selection. Therefore, this review presents a thorough examination of the emerging 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions, including their classification, fabrication, and corresponding devices. Additionally, this review offers profound and comprehensive insight into the challenges in this field to inspire future research directions. It is expected to propel researchers to harness the extraordinary capabilities of 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions for a wider range of applications by further advancing the understanding of their fundamental properties, expanding the range of available materials, and exploring novel device architectures. The ongoing research and development in this field hold potential to unlock captivating advancements and foster practical applications across diverse industries. Luminescent Characteristics and Applied Research Progress of II-VI Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots have great practical value because of their unique optical characteristics. In this paper, the luminescent principle and properties of semiconductor quantum dots were introduced combining with our work about this aspect. In the experiments, it was found that the luminescent stability of the core/shell structural semiconductor quantum dots CdSe/CdS was enhanced in comparison with the bare CdSe quantum dots, and the absorption and emission spectra of the CdSe/CdS quantum dots shifted to the longer wavelength. It was also observed that the different sized semiconductor quantum dots showed different colors, and the absorption and emission spectra shifted to the longer wavelength as the size of the quantum dots increased. Particularly, the progress and applications of semiconductor quantum dots in optoelectronic devices and biomedicine were reviewed, and the perspective of the development was viewed.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed tremendous research efforts devoted to two-dimensional (2D) materials and great progress made in both their fundamental studies and technique development. 2D light-emitting materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and phosphorene are receiving particular attention as a result of their intriguing electronic, optical and optoelectronic properties. The ability to tune their layer numbers, engineer their dielectric environment, form alloys, create van der Waals heterostructures, etc. provides further means to modulate their properties which have led to a number of interesting luminescence features and potential applications in lighting, imaging and sensing. As the map of 2D materials has expanded over the past few years, 2D organic and organic-inorganic hybrid materials, such as 2D polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, have also emerged with merits of low cost, chemical versatility and solution processibility. Importantly, the wide tunability of their functional properties is enabled by the rational design and controlled modification of their compositions and structures at the molecular level. Herein, we present a critical review of 2D light-emitting materials by categorizing them into three main groups, namely 2D inorganic light-emitting materials, 2D organic light-emitting materials, and 2D organic-inorganic hybrid light-emitting materials. Within each group, we will describe their preparation methods and discuss their structural and chemical properties. Significant emphasis will be placed on strategies that can tune their luminescence properties, and their potential applications in various fields. Finally, we will summarize by stating the current challenges and future opportunities in the development of 2D light-emitting materials.

Abstract:Over the past decade, van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has offered considerable freedom to integrate various two dimensional (2D) layered materials and proved themselves extremely versatile with unprecedented characteristics, unique functionalities and novel physics. Significant efforts have been contributed to the preparation, basic understanding, and applications of vdW heterostructures in the fields of electronics and optoelectronics. Herein, we review the recent advances of vdW heterostructures, such as, mechanical assembly of 2D vdW heterojunctions, direct vdW heterostructure growth, and the progress made in light-emitting diodes, photo detectors and photovoltaics. Finally, we conclude this review by discussing the current challenges facing 2D vdW heterostructures-based optoelectronics and offering our insights on future directions of this field.

Abstract:Van der Waals integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials and bulk semiconductors can combine their respective advantages, enabling multifunctional electronic and optoelectronic devices. Significant progress has been made in 2D/bulk heterostructures and their photodetectors, including working mechanisms, detection performance, and multifunctional applications. Here, we summarize the milestones in 2D/bulk semiconductor research and outline the future roadmap of infrared photodetection technology based on such mixed-dimensional heterostructures. Some concepts are highlighted to enhance the performance of infrared photodetectors. Furthermore, a large-scale integration strategy for 2D/bulk infrared focal plane array and some possible function innovations in this platform are proposed.

Abstract:An infrared photodetector is a critical component that detects, identifies, and tracks complex targets in a detection system. Infrared photodetectors based on 3D bulk materials are widely applied in national defense, military, communications, and astronomy fields. The complex application environment requires higher performance and multi-dimensional capability. The emergence of 2D materials has brought new possibilities to develop next-generation infrared detectors. However, the inherent thickness limitations and the immature preparation of 2D materials still lead to low quantum efficiency and slow response speeds. This review summarizes 2D/3D hybrid van der Waals heterojunctions for infrared photodetection. First, the physical properties of 2D and 3D materials related to detection capability, including thickness, band gap, absorption band, quantum efficiency, and carrier mobility, are summarized. Then, the primary research progress of 2D/3D infrared detectors is reviewed from performance improvement (broadband, high-responsivity, fast response) and new functional devices (two-color detectors, polarization detectors). Importantly, combining low-doped 3D and flexible 2D materials can effectively improve the responsivity and detection speed due to a significant depletion region width. Furthermore, combining the anisotropic 2D lattice structure and high absorbance of 3D materials provides a new strategy in high-performance polarization detectors. This paper offers prospects for developing 2D/3D high-performance infrared detection technology.

Abstract:With paramount electrical, optical, catalytic, and other physical and chemical properties, van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) have captured increasing attention. vdWHs are two-dimension (2D) heterostructures formed via van der Waals (vdW) force, paving the way for fabricating, understanding, and applications of 2D materials. vdWHs materials of large lattice constant difference can be fabricated together, forming a series of unique 2D materials that cannot form heterostructures earlier. Additionally, vdWHs provide a new platform to study the interlayer interactions between materials, unraveling new physics in the system. Notably, vdWHs embody short-range bonds weaker than covalent and ionic bonds, almost only interactions between nearest particles are considered. Owing to a clear interface, vdW interaction between two different components, devices made by vdWHs can bring amazing physicochemical properties, such as unconventional superconductivity, super capacitance in intercalation 2D structure, etc. Recently, impressive progress has been achieved in the controlled preparation of vdWHs and various applications, which will be summarized in this review. The preparation methods comprise mechanical exfoliation, liquid phase stripping, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The applications sections will focus on photoelectric devices, logic devices, flexible devices, and piezotronics. Finally, some perspectives in the future on the controlled preparation of vdWHs with desired properties for advanced applications will be discussed.

Abstract:Abstract With a large number of researches being conducted on two-dimensional (2D) materials, their unique properties in optics, electrics, mechanics, and magnetics have attracted increasing attention. Accordingly, the idea of combining distinct functional 2D materials into heterostructures naturally emerged that provides unprecedented platforms for exploring new physics that are not accessible in a single 2D material or 3D heterostructures. Along with the rapid development of controllable, scalable, and programmed synthesis techniques of high-quality 2D heterostructures, various heterostructure devices with extraordinary performance have been designed and fabricated, including tunneling transistors, photodetectors, and spintronic devices. In this review, we present a summary of the latest progresses in fabrications, properties, and applications of different types of 2D heterostructures, followed by the discussions on present challenges and perspectives of further investigations.

Abstract:AbstractIt is a rapidly developed subject in expanding the fundamental properties and application of two‐dimensional (2D) materials. The weak van der Waals interaction in 2D materials inspired researchers to explore 2D heterostructures (2DHs) based broadband photodetectors in the far‐infrared (IR) and middle‐IR regions with high response and high detectivity. This review focuses on the strategy and motivation of designing 2DHs based high‐performance IR photodetectors, which provides a wide view of this field and new expectation for advanced photodetectors. First, the photocarriers' generation mechanism and frequently employed device structures are presented. Then, the 2DHs are divided into semimetal/semiconductor 2DHs, semiconductor/semiconductor 2DHs, and multidimensional semi‐2DHs; the advantages, motivation, mechanism, recent progress, and outlook are discussed. Finally, the challenges for next‐generation photodetectors are described for this rapidly developing field.

Abstract:Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) based on 2D layered materials with selectable materials properties pave the way to integration at the atomic scale, which may give rise to fresh heterostructures exhibiting absolutely novel physics and versatility. This feature article reviews the state-of-the-art research activities that focus on the 2D vdWHs and their optoelectronic applications. First, the preparation methods such as mechanical transfer and chemical vapor deposition growth are comprehensively outlined. Then, unique energy band alignments generated in 2D vdWHs are introduced. Furthermore, this feature article focuses on the applications in light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and optical modulators based on 2D vdWHs with novel constructions and mechanisms. The recently reported novel constructions of the devices are introduced in three primary aspects: light-emitting diodes (such as single defect light-emitting diodes, circularly polarized light emission arising from valley polarization), photodetectors (such as photo-thermionic, tunneling, electrolyte-gated, and broadband photodetectors), and optical modulators (such as graphene integrated with silicon technology and graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructure), which show promising applications in the nextgeneration optoelectronics. Finally, the article provides some conclusions and an outlook on the future development in the field.

This makes heterojunctions more popular than 2D materials themselves, and the design of 2D materials for human beings is easier than ever. In this review, recent progress in optoelectronic applications based on 2D materials and their heterojunctions is summarized and discussed. Owing to their controllable optoelectronic properties, good mechanical flexibility, strong light–material interaction, and broadband optical response, 2D materials and their heterostructures are attracting increasing attention for photonic applications. The basic properties, syntheses, and working mechanisms of 2D materials used in optoelectronic devices are introduced, and the challenges to achieving practical applications of 2D materials are also discussed.

Abstract:Recent progress in the synthesis and assembly of two-dimensional (2D) materials has laid the foundation for various applications of atomically thin layer films. These 2D materials possess rich and diverse properties such as layer-dependent band gaps, interesting spin degrees of freedom, and variable crystal structures. They exhibit broad application prospects in micro-nano devices. In the meantime, the wide bandgap semiconductors (WBS) with an elevated breakdown voltage, high mobility, and high thermal conductivity have shown important applications in high-frequency microwave devices, high-temperature and high-power electronic devices. Beyond the study on single 2D materials or WBS materials, the multi-functional 2D/WBS heterostructures can promote the carrier transport at the interface, potentially providing novel physical phenomena and applications, and improving the performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices. In this review, we overview the advantages of the heterostructures of 2D materials and WBS materials, and introduce the construction methods of 2D/WBS heterostructures. Then, we present the diversity and recent progress in the applications of 2D/WBS heterostructures, including photodetectors, photocatalysis, sensors, and energy related devices. Finally, we put forward the current challenges of 2D/WBS heterostructures and propose the promising research directions in the future.

Abstract:Abstract The last decade has witnessed the significant progress of physical fundamental research and great success of practical application in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials since the discovery of graphene in 2004. To date, vdW materials is still a vibrant and fast-expanding field, where tremendous reports have been published covering topics from cutting-edge quantum technology to urgent green energy, and so on. Here, we briefly review the emerging hot physical topics and intriguing materials, such as 2D topological materials, piezoelectric materials, ferroelectric materials, magnetic materials and twistronic heterostructures. Then, various vdW material synthetic strategies are discussed in detail, concerning the growth mechanisms, preparation conditions and typical examples. Finally, prospects and further opportunities in the booming field of 2D materials are addressed.
