Abstract:The synthesis of ladder-type 9,9′-bifluorenylidene-based conjugated polymer is reported. Unlike the typical synthetic strategy, the new designed ladder-type conjugated polymer is achieved via tandem Suzuki polymerization/Heck cyclization reaction in one-pot. In the preparation process, Suzuki polymerization reaction occurred first and then the intramolecular Heck cyclization followed smoothly under the same catalyst Pd(PPh3)4. The model reaction proved that the introduction of iodine (I) for this tandem reaction can effectively control the sequential bond-forming process and inhibit the additional competitive side reactions. Thus, small-molecule model compounds could be obtained in high yields. The successes of the synthesized small molecule and polymer compounds indicate that the Pd-catalyzed tandem reaction may be an effective strategy for improving extended π-conjugated materials.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:A TfOH-promoted synthesis of fluorinated poly-fused heterocycles via the cascade cyclization of azadienes and difluoroenoxysilanes has been developed, leading to the facile construction of fluorinated benzofuro[3,2-b]pyridines, 5H-indeno-[1,2-b]pyridines, and 5,6-dihydrobenzo[h]quinolines. This one-pot formal [4 + 2] approach involves 1,4-difluoroalkylation, desulfo-nylation, cyclization, and dehydrated and dehydrofluorinated aromatization and represents the first application of difluoroenoxysilane in cascade transformations. Furthermore, this methodology is highlighted by the synthesis of three fluoro analogues of bioactive molecules with potent topoisomerase inhibitory activities.

Abstract:With the aid of a class of newly discovered Trost-type bisphosphine ligands bearing a chiral cycloalkane framework, the Pd-catalyzed decarboxylative dearomative asymmetric allylic alkylation (AAA) of benzofurans was achieved with high efficiency [0.2-1.0 mol% Pd-2(dba)(3)/L], good generality, and high enantioselectivity (>30 examples, 82-99% yield and 90-96% ee). Moreover, a diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) of previously unreachable flavaglines is disclosed. It features a reliable and scalable sequence of the freshly developed Tsuji-Trost-Stoltz AAA, a Wacker-Grubbs-Stoltz oxidation, an intra-benzoin condensation, and a conjugate addition, which allows the efficient construction of the challenging and compact cyclopenta[b]benzofuran scaffold with contiguous stereocenters. This strategy offers a new avenue for developing flavagline-based drugs.

Abstract:Well-defined, fused-ring aromatic oligomers represent promising candidates for the fundamental understanding and application of advanced carbon-rich materials, though bottom-up synthesis and structure-property correlation of these compounds remain challenging. In this work, an efficient synthetic route was employed to construct extended benzo[k]tetraphene-derived oligomers with up to 13 fused rings. The molecular and electronic structures of these compounds were clearly elucidated. Precise correlation of molecular sizes and crystallization dynamics was established, thus demonstrating the pivotal balance between intermolecular interaction and molecular mobility for optimized processing of highly ordered solids of these extended conjugated molecules.

Abstract:Difluoroenoxysilane, a commonly used difluoroallylating reagent, has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, its application in the annulation reaction for the construction of fluorinated heterocyclic compounds remains relatively limited. Presented here is the Bronsted acid-catalyzed efficient formal [4 + 2] annulation of difluoroenoxysilanes with alpha-cyano chalcones. The developed protocol demonstrates tolerance to various substituents under mild reaction conditions, providing a reliable approach to construct gem-difluoro-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans in good to excellent yields with high diastereoselectivities.

Abstract:A novel FeCl2·4H2O-mediated internal-oxidant relay cascade reaction has been developed by functionalization of O-substituted benzohydroxamic acids or N-chloro-arylamides with [60]fullerene. Depending on the nature of the N-substituted groups, fullerenooxazoles or rare hydroxyfullerenyl amides could be obtained in a straightforward and flexible manner. Such a new transformation provides a unique strategy for the synthesis of fullerenooxazoles or hydroxyfullerenyl amides.

Abstract:A type of soluble and thermally stable ladder-type poly(p-phenylene) (LPF) with fluorene units in polymer backbone has been synthesized by Suzuki coupling and Friedel-Crafts ring-closing reaction. The full characterization of structures and properties as well as the performances of electroluminescence devices of the new ladder polymers are presented. LPFs show the well-defined structures, high molecular weights, excellent thermal stability, and good solubility in common organic solvents. The high-efficiency emission and absence of low-energy emission band in photoluminescence spectra are observed from LPFs both in the solution and in the solid film. Furthermore, the single layer light-emitting device using LPFs as the active layer shows very stable blue-green emission with maximum luminescence of 5400 cd/m(2) and maximum luminance efficiency of 0.66 cd/A. The extraordinary low concentration of keto defects in LPFs may be corresponding to the improvement in optical and device properties. The attractive properties exhibited by new ladder-type poly(p-phenylene)s establish them as good candidates for active layers in light-emitting devices.

Abstract:A Y-shaped fluorene-based oligomer (3F) was designed and synthesized on the basis of parent oligomers (1F and 2F), and the optical relationship between the Y-shaped oligomer and its parent oligomers was investigated. The experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrated that the optical properties of the oligomers could be correlated with the molecular frameworks.

Abstract:Eight ladderphanes with C2-symmetric planar chiral ferrocene linkers are synthesized by ring opening metathesis polymerization of bisnorbornene monomers using Grubbs-I catalyst. The aminobenzoate in both monomers and polymers shows absorption maximum around 320 nm. Both monomers and polymers are Circular dichroism (CD) active. Little enhancements of CD profiles around 320 nm are observed for ladderphanes having chiral chloro-or phenyl-substituted ferrocene linkers. However, ladderphanes with a phenyl substituent on the cyclopendienyl ring exhibits enhancement of CD curves aound 240-300 nm. The congested phenyl moieties in adjacent linkers in this polymer might be well oriented such that interactions between these aromatic substituents on different monomeric units might provoke the enhancement of the CD curves in this region. When the methyl-substituted cyclopendienyl ligand is used for chiral ferrocene linkers, the ladderphanes exhibit two-fold enhancement of CD spectrum around 320 nm. This enhancement is further increased when the cyclopentadienyl ligand contains an additional phenyl substituent, owing to exciton coupling between aminobenzoate moieties in adjacent monomeric units. Moreover, the intensity of the CD curves in the region of 240-300 nm is significantly increased. These results suggest that the later polymer may adopt a posible helical structure. Abstract:We have successfully synthesized two types of conjugated polymers, i.e., ladder-type or AB-type poly(benzopentalene) derivative macromoleculars, by Pd-catalyzed self-polycondensation. Incorporating long alkyl chains at the polymer peripheral positions, both polymers have very good solubility and high molecular weight. Thus, the detailed optical and electrochemical properties of the polymers were investigated. At the same time, it was very special that one type of conjugated polymer possessed reactive side groups which can be "clicked'' by tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). The energy levels can be obviously changed by the "click'' reaction. These results show that ladder-type poly(benzopentalene) derivatives containing reacted side groups are promising candidates for achieving optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:An unexpected one-pot tandem procedure of 2-bromo-4,5-diazafluoren-9-one starting from phenanthroline with a yield of up to 50% has been described. The conversion mechanism involves three consecutive oxidation, bromination, and rearrangement reactions. A series of its hammer-shaped donor–acceptor organic semiconductors with solvent-dependent fluorescence have also been constructed via Ullman and/or Friedel–Crafts reaction. Diazafluorenes (DAFs) and derivatives are regarded as promising building blocks or candidates for donor–acceptor organic semiconductors.
