Abstract:Two functional main-chain linear polyrotaxanes, one a covalent polymeric chain that threads through many macrocycles (P1) and the other a poly[n]rotaxane chain that is composed of many repeating rotaxane units (P2), were synthesized by employing strong crown-ether/ammonium-based (DB24C8/DBA) hostguest interactions and click chemistry. Energy transfer between the wheel and axle units in both polyrotaxanes was used to provide insight into the conformational information of their resulting polyrotaxanes. Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy were performed to understand the conformation differences between polymers P1 and P2 in solution. Additional investigations by using dynamic/static light scattering and atomic force microscopy illustrated that polymer P1 was unbending and had a rigid rod-like structure, whilst polymer P2 was curved and flexible. This flexible topology facilitated the self-assembly of polymer P2 into relatively large ball-shaped particles. In addition, the energy transfer between the wheel and axle units was controlled by the addition of specific anions or base. The anion-induced energy enhancement was attributed to a change in electrostatic interactions between the polymer chains. The base-driven molecular shuttle broke the DB24C8/DBA hostguest interactions. These results confirm that both intra- and intermolecular electrostatic interactions are crucial for modulating conformational topology, which determines the assembly of polyrotaxanes in solution.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two new (TTF-DNP-CBPQT(4+)) [2]rotaxanes 1 and 2 is reported, based on tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), 1,5-dioxynaphthalene (DNP), and cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT 4,) with cyclohexyl and alkyl chains as the spacers. Multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of [2]rotaxanes 1 and 2 are prepared. Conducting atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and two-terminal junction device studies indicate that the LB films of [2]rotaxanes 1 and 2 show electrical bistability behavior. By comparing with the TTF-DNP-CBPQT 41 [2]rotaxanes reported by Stoddart et al. previously, the present results imply that proper modification of the chemical structures of the TTF unit and the spacer have negligible effect on the electrical bistability behavior of these TTF-DNP-CBPQT 41 [2]rotaxanes. These findings will allow for the design and preparation of new multifunctional TTF-DNP-CBPQT 4, [2]rotaxanes in the future.

Abstract:Three novel hetero[3]rotaxanes, which comprise one neutral tetraamide cyclophane, one tetracationic cyclophane, and one linear component, have been assembled by utilizing hydrogen-bonding and donor-acceptor interactions, through three neutral [2]rotaxanes as intermediates. Three tetracationic [2]rotaxanes are also prepared for property comparison. For all three linear components, diamide subunits, the hydrogen-bonding templating moieties, are introduced at the center of the molecules, while the electron-rich hydrogquinone subunits, the donor-acceptor interaction templates, are incorporated between the diamides and the triphenylmethyl stoppers. Compared with the reported [3]rotaxanes, the novel hetero[3]rotaxanes exhibit remarkably intensified spatial interaction between the two ring components, which had been proved by (1)H NMR and UV study. For the first time, inter-ring NOEs are observed for interlocked [3]rotaxanes.

Abstract:Three of the first kind of hetero[3]rotaxanes, which comprise one linear component and one neutral and one tetracationic ring component, have been assembled by using the intermolecular hydrogen bonding and donor-acceptor interactions. Three neutral [2]rotaxanes and three tetracationic [2]rotaxanes have also been synthesized as intermediate products or for the sake of property comparison. The linear molecules are incorporated with two glycine subunits, for templating the formation of the neutral tetraamide cyclophane, and one or two hydroquinone subunits, for inducing the formation of the tetracationic cyclophane. Variable-temperature H-1 NMR investigation reveals that the shuttling behavior of the tetracationic ring component along the linear component is substantially influenced by the existence of the neutral ring component. The spatial repelling interaction of the neutral ring on the electron-deficient tetracationic ring simultaneously weakens the latter's "positioning" tendency at both electron-rich hydroquinone sites of the linear component. As a result, the activation energy associated with the shuttling process of the tetracationic ring between the two hydroquinone sites is remarkably reduced in comparison to that of the shuttling process of the corresponding neutral ring-free [2]rotaxanes. For the first time, the rotation of the dipyridinium subunit around the axis formed by the two methylene groups connecting them within the tetracationic cyclophane has been investigated by variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy and the associated kinetic data have also been successfully obtained. Furthermore, the UV-vis and fluorescent properties of the new [2]- and [3]rotaxanes have been studied. The results demonstrate that [3]rotaxanes with different ring components possess unique kinetic features that are not available in [3]rotaxanes with identical ring components.

Abstract:Here we use nor-seco-cucurbit[10]uril（ns-CB[10]） based ternary complexation to construct [5]rotaxane,linear supramolecular dynamic rotaxane polymers and cubic 3D supramolecular organic framework.A [5]rotaxane is constructed by ns-CB[10], TMe CB[6] and short linear derivatives of 4,4’-bipyridinium（M2）. ns-CB[10], CB[7] and long linear derivatives of 4,4’-bipyridinium（M3） self-assemble into a linear supramolecular dynamic rotaxane polymer. ns-CB[10] and tetracationic tetrahedral monomer selfassemble and form a three-dimensional supramolecular organic framework. The above results demonstrate that ns-CB[10]-based ternary complexation is a versatile platform to build various supramolecular systems.

Abstract:We report the metathesis cyclopolymerization (MCP) of 1,7-dihalogen-1,6-heptadiyne derivatives by using MoCl5/(n-Bu)(4)Sn complex catalyst system. Five homopolymers (P1-P5) and a copolymer (P[1-co-5]) were obtained in high yields (up to 95%) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 210 000) under the optimized conditions (60 & DEG;C, 12 h, in 1,2-dichloroethane). The structures of the resultant polymers were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques, which confirmed the MCP methodology was successfully applied to the preparation of halogen-modified polydiynes. The resultant polydiynes possess good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability. More significantly, these chloro-modified polydiynes demonstrated unprecedented upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior, which can be tentatively related to the halogen bonding between the halogen atoms and the oxygen/nitrogen atoms of solvents. The UCST performance of the polydiynes was influenced by the side chain of the polymers (58-110 & DEG;C) and copolymerization of different monomers (61-66 & DEG;C). Interestingly, by linking tetraphenylethene (TPE) groups onto the polymer side chains, the UCST process could be visually monitored due to the aggregation-induced emission characteristics of TPE groups.

Abstract:A general stepwise approach is described for the preparation of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based linear and mono- and dimacrocyclic compounds incorporating one of two 1,4-dioxyphenylene, 9,10-dioxyanthrylene or 1,5- or 2,6-dioxynaphthylene units from readily available starting materials. By utilizing, the pi-pi stacking interactions of the TTF unit with the dipyridinium dication of 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis (methylene)] bis-4,4'-bipyridinium bis(hexafluorophosphate), a rotaxane and two [2]catenanes were synthesized starting from the linear monomacrocyclic compounds, respectively. From the dioxypheylene-based di-macrocycle, three [3]pseudocatenanes (trans, cis, and a mixture of cis/trans isomers) were obtained with the trails compound as the major product. From the dioxyanthrylene dimacrocycle, only the trans-[3]pseudocatenane was obtained. Catenane products were formed quantitatively from the 1.5-dioxynaphthylene dimacrocycle ina template-directed reaction, affording a trans-[3]pseudo-catenane together with a [4]pseudocatenane (mixture of cis/trans isomers). From the 2.6-dioxynaphthylene dimacrocycle, a cis-[3]pseudocatenane was obtained as the major product and a trans-[3]pseudocatenane as the minor one. For the [3]pseudocatenanes (i.e., both the eis and trans catenanes). in which the TTF units were clamped by the tetracationic macrocycle, isomerizations were completely prevented even in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. All new rotaxanes and catenanes were characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry, and the cis- and trans-[3]pseudocatenanes were additionally investigated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical and spectral properties of the rotaxane and the catenanes are reported. Catenane formation increases the redox potentials of the TTF unit. The results demonstrate the versatility of TTF as a building block in the construction of supramolecular structures.

Abstract:In this article, a six-component self-sorting process that involves three types of crown ether macrocycle and three types of cation guest molecule was carefully and thoroughly investigated. The six components include three kinds of crown ether, namely bis(p-phenylene-34-crown-10) (BPP34C10), dibenzo-24-crown- 8 (DB24C8) and benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7), and their corresponding cation guest molecules, namely a 4,4'-bipyridine dication (BPY2+) and dibenzylammonium (DBA) and benzylalkylammonium (BAA) ions, respectively. Based on this well-established highly selective six-component self-sorting process, a hetero[6] rotaxane bearing three different kinds of crown ether macrocycle was designed and successfully synthesized through a facile and efficient one-pot "click" stoppering strategy. Such work is proposed to be a significant advance in the construction of mechanically interlocked molecules with high structural complexity, as well as a good supplement in the areas of multi-component self-sorting and noncovalent self-assembly.

Abstract:A bistable porphyrin-containing [2]rotaxane is synthesized with a shuttling benzylic-amide macrocycle mechanically locked onto the thread subunit by formations of H-bonds with two potential stations. This macrocycle comprises two pyridine groups, which would be easily coordinated with zinc porphyrin. The Zn(II) coordination of porphyrin moiety on the thread subunit, immediately followed by the coordination with pyridine groups on the macrocycle, leads to an intermolecular axle-macrocycle-type nanostructure. Moreover, the self-assembly way shows great difference from the two states of the rotaxane monomer: The coordination-driven self-organization of the trans-state E2 leads to a network structure, whereas the cis-state Z2 gives birth to an irregular assembly.

Abstract:We report on the synthesis of [2]rotaxanes from vicinal diols through dynamic covalent boronic ester templates, as well as the use of the boronic ester for post-assembly modifications. A boronic acid pincer ligand with two alkene-appended arms was condensed with a linear diol-containing thread, and ring-closing metathesis then established a quasi[1]rotaxane architecture along with a non-entangled isomer. Advanced NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry unambiguously assigned the isomers and revealed that the quasi[1]rotaxane was in equilibrium with its hydrolyzed free [2]rotaxane form. The boronic ester handle in the quasi[1]rotaxane could also be synthetically addressed in a multitude of ways to obtain different [2]rotaxanes, including direct oxidation, protodeboronation, functional group interconversions and Pd-catalysed cross-couplings.

Abstract:Self-assembly of polypseudorotaxanes in high-polar organic solvents is difficult due to remarkably weak interactions between macrocycles and axles. Reported here is a novel metal-coordinated poly[2]pseudorotaxane constructed by pillar[5]arene, 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl pyridinium)butane, and [PdCl2(PhCN)2] in highly polar organic solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Utilizing a combination of 1H NMR, NOESY, DOSY, DLS, SEM, and viscosity measurements, the formation of polypseudorotaxane was shown to be dependent on the concentration of [2]pseudorotaxanes/[PdCl2(PhCN)2] and temperature. Furthermore, a temperature-responsive supramolecular gel with reversibly gel–sol transformation was obtained via spontaneous assembly of the polypseudorotaxanes at high concentrations.

Abstract:Rotaxanes, known as supramolecular compounds, are expected to find applications in functional materials due to their high degree of freedom. However, their synthesis requires multistep reactions, and there is a demand for more convenient methods to synthesize rotaxane materials. In this study, we aimed to investigate a simpler method for synthesizing highly functional rotaxane materials and explore the diversity of molecular designs. To achieve this, we successfully synthesized a host–guest conjugated compound that incorporates both crown ether as the host unit and secondary ammonium salts as the guest unit within the same molecule. Subsequently, the metathesis reaction of these compounds, which construct [c2]daisy-chain rotaxanes, enabled the one-pot synthesis of a topological polymer called “poly([c2]daisy-chain rotaxane)” with a pseudo-stopper. This methodology achieves the stabilization and polymerization of rotaxanes simultaneously, contributing to the easy materialization of rotaxanes. Furthermore, the thiol-ene reaction achieved the extension of the distance between rotaxane units and provided a useful approach to diversify the design of functional materials with rotaxane structures.

Abstract:A novel braided hetero[2](3)rotaxane is demonstrated by integrating the braided structure and mechanically interlocked rotaxane, in which a heterotritopic linear tris(dialkylammonium) guest penetrates a heterotritopic tris(crown ether) host, resulting in the formation of braided pseudohetero[2](3)rotaxane with different crossing and threading points. Then a braided hetero[2](3)rotaxane is constructed through the "CuAAC" click reaction.

Abstract:Based on the pillar[5]arene/alkane recognition motif, two [2]rotaxanes were successfully prepared. Their formation was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry. We also demonstrated that 3,5-dinitrophenyl group and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl group are big enough to work as stoppers for DPPillar[5]arene, which lays a foundation for the preparation of more complex and functional supramolecular structures.
