Abstract:Organic polymer materials gain much attentions due to its high nature abundance, tuneable property with respect to functional groups, easy processing, low-cost alternate to their inorganic counter-part. The conversion of one functional group to others, building cyclic skeleton, synthesis of various heterocycles, protection of one sensitive functional group during the conversion of another one in a substituted molecule, low temperature and high pressure reactions, etc. are the part of synthetic chemistry. Especially, care is needed to synthesis electrochemically active compounds for energy storage applications. Almost, all secondary batteries decorated with the organic polymer materials as part/full of the electrodes design. This review summarizes the synthesis of electrochemically active organic redox polymers such as carbonyl, organosulfur, conducting polymers and its application in various alkali metal-ion rechargeable batteries as electrode components.

Abstract:Nanostructured conjugated polymers are a type of electrochemically active organic material with a high electronic conductivity, good electrochemical stability, and superior flexibility. Owing to these advantages, increasing research interest has been recently focused on the utilization of nanostructured conjugated polymers as green and renewable resources for potential high-performance energy storage and conversion devices. This Review discusses the current situation and the state-of-the-art developments on nanostructured conjugated polymers including their one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) structures as well as their three-dimensional (3D) composite forms as electrode materials for rechargeable batteries. In particular, the fundamentals, challenges, and possible directions to improve the performance of the current systems are included in this Review. With sufficient depth and advanced technologies devoted to exploration of the electrochemistry and mechanism, nanostructured conjugated polymer-based electrodes will be of great scientific interest for future practical applications.

Abstract:Existing rechargeable batteries are mostly based on transitionmetal cathodes, which have serious cost and resource limitations that hinder their large scale applications for upcoming electric vehicles and renewable power stations. Therefore, the development of low-cost electric storage batteries using sustainable and electrochemically energetic materials is now a major challenge for effective use of renewable energy sources. [ 1 , 2 ] In the pursuit of such a new generation of storage batteries, a vast variety of organic compounds and polymers have been explored for battery applications. [ 3–5 ] Among them, conducting polymers seem to be a most probable candidate because of their high electronic conductivity and reversible redox-active chemistry. In particular, p-doped polymers such as polyaniline (PAn), [ 6 ] polypyrrole (PPy), [ 7 , 8 ] polythiophene (PTh), [ 9 , 10 ] and their derivatives are frequently reported as organic cathode materials for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. [ 11 ] However, although these polymers have a theoretically high redox capacity, their realizable capacity is usually very low and decreases gradually upon charge–discharge cycling, possibly because of a low p-doping level of counter anions in the polymeric matrixes and a diffusive dissolution of the anions to the electrolyte. [ 12–14 ]

Abstract:Electrochemical methods are commonly used in the preparation of functional polymers on flexible conducting substrates to design and fabricate advanced electronic devices. The numerous merits of electrodeposited polymers including in situ growth of a free-standing bulk/framework, uniform deposition, well-designed porous structure, and abundant active sites have triggered the fast development of lithium batteries in recent years. Thus, the main focus of this review is the synthetic advantages and application progresses of electrochemically constructed polymer materials for lithium batteries. Firstly, the fundamentals of electropolymerization are introduced briefly. Secondly, the application progress of electropolymerized functional polymers in Li-ion and Li-S batteries is summarized according to their different functions, including active cathodes and hybrid anodes, coating layers, conductive hosts, separator modifier/functional interlayer and polymer electrolyte. Finally, some practical strategies and potential research directions are proposed. We expect that this review will provide novel design ideas to develop highly efficient polymer-containing lithium batteries.

Abstract:Redox polymers are studied as a functional organic material that can reversibly gain, release, and exchange electrons. Efficient charge propagation and storage in densely populated redox‐active sites on soft polymer platforms are summarized. Opportunities to employ them in batteries and various redox‐based devices are discussed along with related challenges and prospects, including fundamental questions and topics of interest. The growing demand for energy‐storage devices has raised inevitable concerns regarding the availability of redox‐active inorganic compounds and metals. It is expected that some of the inorganic compounds will be replaced by organic redox polymers, which are produced from abundant sources using environmentally benign processes, and they exhibit inherent advantages, including flexibility, processability, and biocompatibility. Redox polymers contain groups that can be reversibly reduced and oxidized by gaining and releasing electrons, respectively, and constitute an emerging class of functional organic materials. This article begins with a retrospective discussion of polymers and their electron exchange concepts, presenting them as old but new materials. The basics of electrochemical redox couples are briefly reintroduced, and the chemical design strategies for extending them to redox polymers are summarized. Subsequently, the efficient and reversible charge propagation and storage in densely populated redox‐active sites on soft polymer platforms are discussed. The potential to employ redox polymers in rechargeable charge‐storage applications and next‐generation devices is discussed, along with the current challenges and prospects. This outlook suggests fundamental questions and proposes interesting topics for redox polymers to facilitate their development as valuable materials for use in sustainable technologies.

Abstract:Redox-active organic materials have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional inorganic electrode materials in electrochemical devices for energy storage. However, the deployment of redox-active organic materials in practical lithium-ion battery devices is hindered by their undesired solubility in electrolyte solvents, sluggish charge transfer and mass transport, as well as processing complexity. Here, we report a new molecular engineering approach to prepare redox-active polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) that possess an open network of subnanometer pores and abundant accessible carbonyl-based redox sites for fast lithium-ion transport and storage. Redox-active PIMs can be solution-processed into thin films and polymer-carbon composites with a homogeneously dispersed microstructure while remaining insoluble in electrolyte solvents. Solution-processed redox-active PIM electrodes demonstrate improved cycling performance in lithium-ion batteries with no apparent capacity decay. Redox-active PIMs with combined properties of intrinsic microporosity, reversible redox activity, and solution processability may have broad utility in a variety of electrochemical devices for energy storage, sensors, and electronic applications.

Abstract:Organic-based materials which have been explored for use as electrodes in rechargeable devices have the potential to utilize changes in charge-state of the electroactive sites to realize intrinsic redox reactions. As outlined in this review. organic electrode materials are not strictly limited to conventional Li-ion batteries. they may also be used in other metal ion batteries with larger ionic radius( such as Na+. K+. Mg2+. Zn2+). Organic electrode materials have been shown to have great application potential in rechargeable devices due to a range of advantages which include high molecular structure diversity. low cost. abundant resource. and environmental sustainability. The properties of organic electrode materials can also be readily tailored with appropriate material design. However. there are still critical issues which need to be addressed in order to facilitate the practical application of organic electrode materials. including their poor electrical conductivity and dissolution in conventional organic electrolyte systems. This review addresses organic electrode materials with various redox centers. including organosulfur compounds. organic radicals. imide-based compounds. azo compounds and carbonyl compounds through first providing an overview of their working principles. We then focus on approaches towards enhancing the electrochemical performance of carbonyl-based electrode materials. We also review the last five years of advancements relating to applications of carbonyl.based electrode materials in the field rechargeable devices. Finally. the challenges and opportunities for organic electrode materials towards practical application are outlined.

Abstract:Nano polymorphism (NPM), as an emerging research area in the field of energy storage, and rechargeable batteries, have attracted much attention recently. In this review, the recent progress on the composition and formation of polymorphs, and the evolution processes of different redox electrodes in rechargeable metal-ion, metal-air, and metal-sulfur batteries are highlighted. First, NPM and its significance for rechargeable batteries are discussed. Subsequently, the current NPM modulation strategies of different types of representative electrodes for their corresponding rechargeable battery applications are summarized. The goal is to demonstrate how NPM could tune the intrinsic material properties, and hence, improve their electrochemical activities for each battery type. It is expected that the analysis of polymorphism and electrochemical properties of materials could help identify some "processing-structure-properties" relationships for material design and performance enhancement. Lastly, the current research challenges and potential research directions are discussed to offer guidance and perspectives for future research on NPM engineering.
Redox-State-Dependent Interplay between Pendant Group and Conducting Polymer Backbone in Quinone-Based Conducting Redox Polymers for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Conducting redox polymers (CRPs) have attracted increased interest in recent years because of the possibility of combining the favorable electron-transport properties of conducting polymers with the additional functionality provided by the redox active pendant groups (PGs). Herein we present a series of quinone-substituted PEDOT-CRPs where the quinone PGs have been substituted by electron-withdrawing substituents. Introducing electron-withdrawing substituents leads to an increase of the quinone formal potential, making, for example, CF3-substituted CRPs, a promising high-voltage cathode material for lithium ion batteries with a well-defined charge/discharge plateau around 3 V vs Li+/Li0. Interestingly, we find a shift in conductance onset potential concomitant with the quinone formal potential shift, indicating that the polymer backbone conductance is intimately associated with the PG redox chemistry. Through in situ UV–vis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance experiments as well as by experiments in lithium- and tert-butyl-ammonium-based electrolytes, we show that the conductance delay is caused by the reduced lithiated quinone state, most likely by localizing the polaron charge carrier as indicated by EPR and UV–vis experiments.

Abstract:New generation energy storage devices call for electrodes with high capacity, high cycling performance and environmental benignity. Polymer electrode materials (PEMs) are attractive for their abundant structural diversity and tunability as well as engineered conductivity, desirable processability and electrochemical properties for aqueous batteries. We herein overview the state-of-the-art development of PEMs for aqueous batteries, including conventional doped, redox-backbone, redox-pendant and hydrophilic conducting polymers. The merits and demerits of PEMs, and their structural modification and energy storage performance are discussed in detail. To provide a comprehensive understanding of polymer-based aqueous batteries, we correlate the molecular structures of PEMs with their conductivity, morphology and electrochemical behaviors. The review offers an insight into the rational design of conducting polymer electrodes for safe and cost-effective aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Organic electrode materials have attracted much attention for lithium batteries because of their high capacity, flexible designability, and environmental friendliness. Understanding the redox chemistry of organic electrode materials is essential for optimizing electrochemical performance and designing new molecules. This review aims to summarize the redox chemistry of different organic electrode materials in lithium batteries, including carbonyl compounds, conductive polymers, organosulfur compounds, organic radicals, imine compounds, compounds with superlithiation ability, and azo compounds. The discussions are focused on the evolution of their molecular and crystal structures during discharge/ charge processes utilizing various characterization approaches. To date, carbonyl compounds based on the conversion between C=O and C-OLi have been proven to be one of the most promising organic electrode materials for lithium batteries. Future works should pay more attention to the detection of redox intermediates through operando techniques and the further combination of theoretical calculations. This review provides insights into the redox chemistry of organic electrode materials in lithium batteries.

Abstract:Radical polymers are aliphatic or nonconjugated polymers bearing organic redox radicals as pendant groups on their structural unit. These radical sites populated in large densities allow the electrochemical redox reaction taking place through the polymer layer by redox gradient-driven electron transport and behave as electroactive centers. Since radical polymer can be designed with a large population of redox radicals and electron exchange between the radical sites are usually very fast, they are considered as a new class of charge storage and transport materials with the possibility to provide high electrical storage capacity and high charge-discharge rate capability. Particularly, these polymers are completely organic with the advantage of being fully substainable, they are ideal for the displacement of inorganic materials in diverse applications such as electrochemical supercapacitors, photovoltaic cells and rechargeable batteries. This paper is intended to review the structural characteristics, electrochemical reaction mechanisms and current development status of the radical polymers as electode-active materials, with focus on the technological challenges and ongoing research strategies of these novel electrode materials as used for construction of high capacity and high rate rechargeable batteries. Also, the problems in the development of radical polymer electrodes are discussed.

Abstract:The application of rechargeable lithium batteries involves all aspects of our daily life, such as new energy vehicles, computers, watches and other electronic mobile devices, so it is becoming more and more important in contemporary society. However, commercial liquid rechargeable lithium batteries have safety hazards such as leakage or explosion, all-solid-state lithium rechargeable lithium batteries will become the best alternatives. But the biggest challenge we face at present is the large solid-solid interface contact resistance between the solid electrolyte and the electrode as well as the low ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte. Due to the large relative molecular mass, polymers usually exhibit solid or gel state with good mechanical strength. The intermolecules are connected by covalent bonds, so that the chemical and physical stability, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and fire resistance are good. Many researchers have found that polymers play an important role in improving the performance of all-solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries. This review mainly describes the application of polymers in the fields of electrodes, electrolytes, electrolyte-electrode contact interfaces, and electrode binders in all-solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries, and how to improve battery performance. This review mainly introduces the recent applications of polymers in solid-state lithium battery electrodes, electrolytes, electrode binders, etc., and describes the performance of emerging porous polymer materials and materials based on traditional polymers in solid-state lithium batteries. The comparative analysis shows the application advantages and disadvantages of the emerging porous polymer materials in this field which provides valuable reference information for further development.

Abstract:The positive material has been one of the research hotspots in lithium–oxygen batteries. Carbon is the most widely used material due to its cheap price, high conductivity, low weight, and structural diversity. But serious side reactions hinder its practical application. Here, we modified carbon material with three popular organic polymers (poly(2,3 dihydrothieno-1,4-dioxin), polypyrrole, and polyaniline) as coating layers and evaluated its performance in lithium–oxygen batteries with redox mediators. This strategy allows us to manipulate the electrode surface and design electrodes for flexible cells and wearable devices.

Abstract:Conjugated coordination polymers have become an emerging category of redox-active materials. Although recent studies heavily focus on the tailoring of metal centers in the complexes to achieve stable electrochemical performance, the effect on different substitutions of the bridging bonds has rarely been studied. An innovative tailoring strategy is presented toward the enhancement of the capacity storage and the stability of metal-organic conjugated coordination polymers. Two nanostructured d-π conjugated compounds, Ni[C6 H2 (NH)4 ]n (Ni-NH) and Ni[C6 H2 (NH)2 S2 ]n (Ni-S), are evaluated and demonstrated to exhibit hybrid electrochemical processes. In particular, Ni-S delivers a high reversible capacity of 1164 mAh g-1 , an ultralong stability up to 1500 cycles, and a fully recharge ability in 67 s. This tailoring strategy provides a guideline to design future effective conjugated coordination-polymer-based electrodes.

Abstract:We report the development of redox-active conjugated polymers with potential application to electrochemical energy storage. Side chain engineering enables processing of the polymer electrodes from solution, stability in aqueous electrolytes and efficient transport of ionic and electronic charge carriers. We synthesized a 3,3' dialkoxybithiophene homo polymer (p type polymer) with glycol side chains and prepared naphthalene 1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic-diimide-dialkoxybithiophene (NDI gT2) copolymers (n type polymer) with either a glycol or zwitterionic side chain on the NDI unit. For the latter, we developed a post-functionalization synthesis to attach the polar zwitterion side chains to the polymer backbone to avoid challenges of purifying polar intermediates. We demonstrate fast and reversible charging of solution processed electrodes for both the p- and n type polymers in aqueous electrolytes, without using additives or porous scaffolds and for films up to micrometers thick. We apply spectroelectrochemistry as an in operando technique to probe the state of charge of the electrodes. This reveals that thin films of the p-type polymer and zwitterion n-type polymer can be charged reversibly with up to two electronic charges per repeat unit (bipolaron formation). We combine thin films of these polymers in a two-electrode cell and demonstrate output voltages of up to 1.4 V with high redox stability. Our findings demonstrate the potential of functionalizing conjugated polymers with appropriate polar side chains to improve specific capacity, reversibility and rate capabilities of polymer electrodes in aqueous electrolytes.

Abstract:Redox polymers have been an expanding research area over the last 30 years. The design of redox polymers for mediated bioelectrocatalysis revolutionized glucose biosensors in the early 1990s. These concepts were then applied to biofuel cells in the 2000s, but it was not until recently that researchers further translated these concepts to the fields of electrosynthesis, supercapacitors, and redox flow batteries. This review will give a short background to the early work in the field but will primarily discuss the recent applications of the electrosynthesis, supercapacitors, and redox flow batteries.

Abstract:Organic compounds offer new possibilities for high energy/power density, cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, and functional rechargeable lithium batteries. For a long time, they have not constituted an important class of electrode materials, partly because of the large success and rapid development of inorganic intercalation compounds. In recent years, however, exciting progress has been made, bringing organic electrodes to the attention of the energy storage community. Herein thirty years' research efforts in the field of organic compounds for rechargeable lithium batteries are summarized. The working principles, development history, and design strategies of these materials, including organosulfur compounds, organic free radical compounds, organic carbonyl compounds, conducting polymers, non‐conjugated redox polymers, and layered organic compounds are presented. The cell performances of these materials are compared, providing a comprehensive overview of the area, and straightforwardly revealing the advantages/disadvantages of each class of materials. Lithium storage with organics has been overlooked in the development of rechargeable lithium batteries. Organic electrode materials offer new possibilities that are not readily available for conventional intercalation compounds. Herein three decades' research efforts on organic electrodes are reviewed, providing a comprehensive overview and analysis of the field.
