Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:Mobile big data contains vast statistical features in various dimensions, including spatial, temporal, and the underlying social domain. Understanding and exploiting the features of mobile data from a social network perspective will be extremely beneficial to wireless networks, from planning, operation, and maintenance to optimization and marketing. In this paper, we categorize and analyze the big data collected from real wireless cellular networks. Then, we study the social characteristics of mobile big data and highlight several research directions for mobile big data in the social computing areas.

Abstract:Urbanization's rapid progress has led to many big cities, which have modernized people's lives but also engendered big challenges, such as air pollution, increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. Tackling these challenges can seem nearly impossible years ago given the complex and dynamic settings of cities. Nowadays, sensing technologies and large-scale computing infrastructures have produced a variety of big data in urban spaces, e.g. human mobility, air quality, traffic patterns, and geographical data. The big data implies rich knowledge about a city and can help tackle these challenges when used correctly. Urban computing is a process of acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data generated by a diversity of sources in urban spaces, such as sensors, devices, vehicles, buildings, and human, to tackle the major issues that cities face, e.g. air pollution, increased energy consumption and traffic congestion. Urban computing connects unobtrusive and ubiquitous sensing technologies, advanced data management and analytics models, and novel visualization methods, to create win-win-win solutions that improve urban environment, human life quality, and city operation systems. Urban computing also helps us understand the nature of urban phenomena and even predict the future of cities.

Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on computational intelligence for big social data analytics. In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.

Abstract:Traditional data collection methods such as remote sensing and field surveying often fail to offer timely information during or immediately following disaster events. Social sensing enables all citizens to become part of a large sensor network, which is low cost, more comprehensive, and always broadcasting situational awareness information. However, data collected with social sensing is often massive, heterogeneous, noisy, unreliable from some aspects, comes in continuous streams, and often lacks geospatial reference information. Together, these issues represent a grand challenge toward fully leveraging social sensing for emergency management decision making under extreme duress. Meanwhile, big data computing methods and technologies such as high-performance computing, deep learning, and multi-source data fusion become critical components of using social sensing to understand the impact of and response to the disaster events in a timely fashion. This special issue captures recent advancements in leveraging social sensing and big data computing for supporting disaster management. Specifically analyzed within these papers are some of the promises and pitfalls of social sensing data for disaster relevant information extraction, impact area assessment, population mapping, occurrence patterns, geographical disparities in social media use, and inclusion in larger decision support systems.

Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the First International Symposium on Social and Community Intelligence (SCI), associated with the International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp) 2011. The mission of the symposium is to provide an international forum for the discussion of challenges in the fields of SCI, including theoretical studies, practical issues, emerging technologies and applications. SCI gives researchers and practitioners a unique opportunity to share their perspectives with others interested in the various aspects of revealing the individual/group behaviors, social interactions, as well as community dynamics (e.g., city hot spots, traffic jams) by mining the digital traces left by people while interacting with cyber-physical spaces. The call for papers attracted 14 submissions from Asia, America and Europe. The program committee accepted 8 papers that cover a variety of topics, including Intelligent Social/ Community Services, Social Data Aggregation and Analysis, and Social Communication. In addition, the program includes two invited papers. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and developers in the SCI area.

Abstract:Online social networking is one of the most prominent features and main reasons of the big data era. In this paper, we first present the immense opportunities brought by big data in: advancing the technical level of the Chinese IT industry, leading development of the new Internet economy, and accelerating interdisciplinary research between sociology and information science. Next we analyze key issues in online social networks and point out new challenges of big social data research on semantic understanding and analysis, multi-modal association and fusion, group behavior analysis and mining, multidimensional analysis and visualization, and system development and integration. We then focus on introducing key international and domestic achievements in big data and online social networks. We conclude with a look at future trends in big social data analytics and mining.

Abstract:In the latest years, the rapid progress of urban computing has engendered big issues, which creates both opportunities and challenges. The heterogeneous and big volume of data and the big difference between physical and virtual worlds have resulted in lots of problems in quickly solving practical problems in urban computing. In this paper, we propose a general application framework of ELM for urban computing. We present several real case studies of the framework like smog-related health hazard prediction and optimal retain store placement. Experiments involving urban data in China show the efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility of our proposed framework.

Abstract:Emerging Spatial Big Data (SBD) has transformative potential in solving many grand societal challenges such as water resource management, food security, disaster response, and transportation. However, significant computational challenges exist in analyzing SBD due to the unique spatial characteristics including spatial autocorrelation, anisotropy, heterogeneity, multiple scales and resolutions which is illustrated in this book. This book also discusses current techniques for, spatial big data science with a particular focus on classification techniques for earth observation imagery big data. Specifically, the authors introduce several recent spatial classification techniques, such as spatial decision trees and spatial ensemble learning. Several potential future research directions are also discussed. This book targets an interdisciplinary audience including computer scientists, practitioners and researchers working in the field of data mining, big data, as well as domain scientists working in earth science (e.g., hydrology, disaster), public safety and public health.
