Abstract:Based on several recent developments in relativistic astrophysics and observational cosmology, this article discusses prospects of (1) theoretical structure of General Relativity (GR) in the new era and (2) submission of GR to new and previously unanticipated tests. It explores the internal theoretical challenges experienced by the theory and challenges produced by it in the otherwise successful journey of 100 years. Gravitational collapse, geometrization of laws of physics, absence of strong field astronomical tests, the dark components of the universe (Cold Dark Matter (CDM) + Cosmological Constant ($\Lambda$ ) or something similar) and cosmological inflation have not only created serious challenges for the theory but also have ignited contemplation for alternatives and attempts for constraining them through observations. The article first explains the nature of the theory and how it was perceived by scientific community a century ago. It then highlights certain perspectives from cosmology and quantum gravity, the ultimate applications of the theory. With the advent of modern observing techniques, the theory has been experiencing tug of war with several tests. Our true journey with the theory has started only recently, thanks to the development of gravitational wave astronomy and extremely large telescopes some of which are and will be dedicated to test the theory by exploring previously uncharted regions of the universe. Incorporating several aspects of observational astronomy and cosmology, gravitational wave research and theoretical physics the article presents the new challenges created by the theory and also their prospects.

Abstract:In this review we present a thoroughly comprehensive survey of recent work on modified theories of gravity and their cosmological consequences. Amongst other things, we cover General Relativity, scalar–tensor, Einstein–æther, and Bimetric theories, as well as TeVeS, f(R), general higher-order theories, Hořava–Lifschitz gravity, Galileons, Ghost Condensates, and models of extra dimensions including Kaluza–Klein, Randall–Sundrum, DGP, and higher co-dimension braneworlds. We also review attempts to construct a Parameterised Post-Friedmannian formalism, that can be used to constrain deviations from General Relativity in cosmology, and that is suitable for comparison with data on the largest scales. These subjects have been intensively studied over the past decade, largely motivated by rapid progress in the field of observational cosmology that now allows, for the first time, precision tests of fundamental physics on the scale of the observable Universe. The purpose of this review is to provide a reference tool for researchers and students in cosmology and gravitational physics, as well as a self-contained, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the subject as a whole.

Abstract:Possible models of modified gravity are being extensively studied now, with most phenomenological motivations coming from puzzles and tensions in cosmology due to a natural desire to better fit the known and newly coming data. At the same time, available experimental evidence is limited for testing gravity as a force beyond the regimes in which the theory of general relativity has proven to be successful. This situation leads researchers to look for “the simplest modification” to general relativity in a certain class of models, which is enough to solve one or more problems. As a result, we are lost amid a variety of theories with no deeper guiding principle. We give a general review of existing approaches and discuss the current state of the art.

A Unified Approach to Geometric Modifications of Gravity

Abstract:This thesis studies modified theories of gravity from a geometric viewpoint. We review the motivations for considering alternatives to General Relativity and cover the mathematical foundations of gravitational theories in Riemannian and non-Riemannian geometries. Then, starting from the decomposition of the Einstein-Hilbert action into bulk and boundary terms, we construct new modifications of General Relativity. These modifications break diffeomorphism invariance or local Lorentz invariance, allowing one to bypass Lovelock's theorem while remaining second-order and without introducing additional fields. In the metric-affine framework, we introduce a new Einstein-Cartan-type theory with propagating torsion. Important comparisons are made with the modified teleparallel theories, and we construct a unified framework encompassing all these theories. The equivalence between theories that break fundamental symmetries in the Riemannian setting and non-Riemannian theories of gravity is explored in detail. This leads to a dual interpretation of teleparallel gravity, one in terms of geometric quantities and the other in terms of non-covariant objects. We then study the cosmological applications of these modified theories, making use of dynamical systems techniques. One key result is that the modified Einstein-Cartan theories can drive inflation in the early universe, replacing the initial cosmological singularity of General Relativity. To conclude, we discuss the viability of these modifications and possible future directions, examining their significance and relevance to the broader field of gravitational physics.

Modified Gravity and Cosmology with Nonminimal Direct or Derivative Coupling Between Matter and the Einstein Tensor

Abstract:We construct new classes of modified theories in which the matter sector couples with the Einstein tensor, namely we consider direct couplings of the latter to the energy-momentum tensor, and to the derivatives of its trace. We extract the general field equations, which do not contain higher-order derivatives, and we apply them in a cosmological framework, obtaining the Friedmann equations, whose extra terms give rise to an effective dark energy sector. At the background level we show that we can successfully describe the usual thermal history of the universe, with the sequence of matter and dark-energy epochs, while the dark-energy equation-of-state parameter can lie in the phantom regime, tending progressively to -1 at present and future times. Furthermore, we confront the theory with Cosmic Chronometer data, showing that the agreement is very good. Finally, we perform a detailed investigation of scalar and tensor perturbations, and extracting an approximate evolution equation for the matter overdensity we show that the predicted behavior is in agreement with observations.

Classical and Quantum Gravity

Abstract:One century after its formulation, Einstein's general relativity (GR) has made remarkable predictions and turned out to be compatible with all experimental tests. Most of these tests probe the theory in the weak-field regime, and there are theoretical and experimental reasons to believe that GR should be modified when gravitational fields are strong and spacetime curvature is large. The best astrophysical laboratories to probe strong-field gravity are black holes and neutron stars, whether isolated or in binary systems. We review the motivations to consider extensions of GR. We present a (necessarily incomplete) catalog of modified theories of gravity for which strong-field predictions have been computed and contrasted to Einstein's theory, and we summarize our current understanding of the structure and dynamics of compact objects in these theories. We discuss current bounds on modified gravity from binary pulsar and cosmological observations, and we highlight the potential of future gravitational wave measurements to inform us on the behavior of gravity in the strong-field regime.

Abstract:This thesis embarks on a comprehensive investigation of modified gravity theories and their implications on the properties of compact objects. Our primary objective is to shed light on the fundamental nature of gravity by exploring potential departures from General Relativity (GR) through a combination of theoretical analyses and observational techniques. On the theoretical side, we consider black hole thermodynamics, stability of compact objects, presence of black hole hairs, and the issue of causality that may provide valuable input towards the ultimate quantum theory of gravity. Moreover, on the observational side, we employ gravitational wave observations and black hole perturbation theory to explore new aspects of gravity and put stringent bounds on the beyond-GR parameters. To provide a structured overview of the thesis, we have organized it into chapters that progressively delve deeper into these diverse aspects of modified gravity and compact objects. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific facet of our investigation, building a coherent narrative that spans both theoretical and observational explorations. We aspire to achieve nothing less than imparting valuable insights and novel perspectives that may significantly enhance our understanding of the fundamental nature of gravitation.

Abstract:In this contribution to the conference "Beyond Einstein: Historical Perspectives on Geometry, Gravitation and Cosmology in the Twentieth Century", we give a critical status report of attempts to explain the late accelerated expansion of the universe by modifications of general relativity. Our brief review of such alternatives to the standard cosmological model addresses mainly readers who have not pursued the vast recent literature on this subject.

Abstract:Einstein's General Relativity (GR) is possibly one of the greatest intellectual achievements ever conceived by the human mind. In fact, over the last century, GR has proven to be an extremely successful theory, with a well established experimental footing, at least for weak gravitational fields. Its predictions range from the existence of black holes and gravitational radiation (now confirmed) to the cosmological models. Indeed, a central theme in modern Cosmology is the perplexing fact that the Universe is undergoing an accelerating expansion, which represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational equations. The cause of the late-time cosmic acceleration remains an open and tantalizing question, and has forced theorists and experimentalists to question whether GR is the correct relativistic theory of gravitation. This has spurred much research in modified theories of gravity, where extensions of the Hilbert–Einstein action describe the gravitational field, in particular, f(R) gravity, where R is the curvature scalar. In this review, we perform a detailed theoretical and phenomenological analysis of specific modified theories of gravity and investigate their astrophysical and cosmological applications. We present essentially two largely explored extensions of f(R) gravity, namely: (i) the hybrid metric-Palatini theory; (ii) and modified gravity with curvature-matter couplings. Relative to the former, it has been established that both metric and Palatini versions of f(R) gravity possess interesting features but also manifest severe drawbacks. A hybrid combination, containing elements from both of these formalisms, turns out to be very successful in accounting for the observed phenomenology and avoids some drawbacks of the original approaches. Relative to the curvature-matter coupling theories, these offer interesting extensions of f(R) gravity, where the explicit nonminimal couplings between an arbitrary function of the scalar curvature R and the Lagrangian density of matter, induces a nonvanishing covariant derivative of the energy-momentum tensor, which implies nongeodesic motion and consequently leads to the appearance of an extra force. We extensively explore both theories in a plethora of applications, namely, the weak-field limit, galactic and extragalactic dynamics, cosmology, stellar-type compact objects, irreversible matter creation processes and the quantum cosmology of a specific curvature-matter coupling theory.

Rethinking the Effective Field Theory formulation of Gravity

Abstract:General relativity is highly successful in explaining a wide range of gravitational phenomena including the gravitational waves emitted by binary systems and the shadows cast by supermassive black holes. From a modern perspective the theory is not fundamental though, but constitutes the lowest order term in an effective field theory description of the gravitational force. As a consequence, the gravitational dynamics should receive corrections by higher-derivative terms. This essay discusses structural aspects associated with these corrections and summarizes their imprint on static, spherically symmetric geometries. Along these lines, we critically reassess the common practice of using local field redefinitions in order to simplify the dynamics at the danger of shifting physics effects into sectors which are beyond the approximation under consideration.

Abstract: General Relativity and the $\Lambda$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. We list the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. Its realization is performed in the framework of the COST European Action "Cosmology and Astrophysics Network for Theoretical Advances and Training Actions".

Abstract:We consider some of the epistemic benefits of exploring "theory space" in the context of modifications of general relativity with intended applications in cosmology. We show how studying modifications of general relativity can help in assessing the robustness of empirical inferences, particularly in inaccessible regimes. We also discuss challenges to sharply distinguishing apparently distinct directions in theory space.

Anisotropies and modified gravity theories in stellar and substellar objects

Abstract:In several classes of modified gravity theories, extra degrees of freedom are not completely screened in the interiors of stellar and substellar objects. In such theories, the hydrostatic equilibrium condition inside these objects is altered. Moreover, the interior structures of these objects might have a small pressure anisotropy induced by several physical phenomena, including rotation and magnetic fields. All these effects, both individually and collectively, induce changes in predicted stellar observables. Such changes have an impact on different phases of the stellar life cycle, starting from its birth to its death, covering almost all the branches of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The aim of this work is to systematically review the current literature on the topic. We discuss the main results and constraints obtained on a class of modified gravity theories.

Modified gravity from Weyl connection and the $f(R,\cal{A})$ extension

Abstract:We use Weyl connection and Weyl geometry in order to construct novel modified gravitational theories. In the simplest case where one uses only the Weyl-connection Ricci scalar as a Lagrangian, the theory recovers general relativity. However, by upgrading the Weyl field to a dynamical field with a general potential and/or general couplings constructed from its trace, leads to new modified gravity theories, where the extra degree of freedom is the Weyl field. Additionally, since the Weyl-connection Ricci scalar differs from the Levi-Civita Ricci scalar by terms up to first derivatives of the Weyl field, the resulting field equations for both the metric and the Weyl field are of second order, and thus the theory is free from Ostrogradsky ghosts. Finally, we construct the most general theory, namely the $f(\tilde{R},\cal{A})$ gravity, which is also ghost free and has $2+2$ degrees of freedom. Applying the above classes of theories at a cosmological framework we obtain an effective dark energy sector of geometrical origin. In the simplest class of theories we are able to obtain an effective cosmological constant, and thus we recover $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, nevertheless in more general cases we acquire a dynamical dark energy. These theories can reproduce the thermal history of the Universe, and the corresponding dark energy equation-of-state parameter presents a rich behavior.

Modified gravity: a unified approach to metric-affine models

Abstract:The starting point of this work is the original Einstein action, sometimes called the Gamma squared action. Continuing from our previous results, we study various modified theories of gravity following the Palatini approach. The metric and the connection will be treated as independent variables leading to generalised theories which may contain torsion or non-metricity or both. Due to our particular approach involving the Einstein action, our setup allows us to formulate a substantial number of new theories not previously studied. Our results can be linked back to well-known models like Einstein-Cartan theory and metric-affine theories and also links to many recently studied modified gravity models. In particular we propose an Einstein-Cartan type modified theory of gravity which contains propagating torsion provided our function depends non-linearly on a boundary term. We also can state precise conditions for the existence of propagating torsion. Our work concludes with a brief discussion of cosmology and the role of cosmological torsion in our model. We find solutions with early-time inflation and late-time matter dominated behaviour. No matter sources are required to drive inflation and it becomes a purely geometrical effect.

Abstract:We consider metric-affine scenarios where a modified gravitational action is sourced by electrovacuum fields in a three dimensional space-time. We first study the case of f(R) theories, finding deviations near the center as compared to the solutions of general relativity. We then consider Born-Infeld gravity, which has raised a lot of interest in the last few years regarding its applications in astrophysics and cosmology, and show that new features always arise at a finite distance from the center. Several properties of the resulting space-times, in particular in presence of a cosmological constant term, are discussed.
Cosmology in New Gravitational Scalar-Tensor Theories

Abstract:We investigate the cosmological applications of new gravitational scalar-tensor theories, which are novel modifications of gravity possessing 2+2 propagating degrees of freedom, arising from a Lagrangian that includes the Ricci scalar and its first and second derivatives. Extracting the field equations we obtain an effective dark energy sector that consists of both extra scalar degrees of freedom, and we determine various observables. We analyze two specific models and we obtain a cosmological behavior in agreement with observations, i.e. transition from matter to dark energy era, with the onset of cosmic acceleration. Additionally, for a particular range of the model parameters, the equation-of-state parameter of the effective dark energy sector can exhibit the phantom-divide crossing. These features reveal the capabilities of these theories, since they arise solely from the novel, higher-derivative terms.
