Abstract:Abstract. Alpine peatlands are recognized as a major natural contributor to the budgets of atmospheric methane (CH4) but as a weak nitrous oxide (N2O) source. Anthropogenic activities and climate change have put these fragile nitrogen (N)-limited peatlands under pressure by altering water table (WT) levels and enhancing N deposition. The response of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from these peatlands to these changes is uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment in 2018 and 2019 investigating individual and interactive effects of three WT levels (WT−30, 30 cm below soil surface; WT0, 0 cm at the soil surface; WT10, 10 cm above soil surface) and multiple levels of N deposition (0, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kgNha-1yr-1) on growing season CH4 and N2O emissions in the Zoige alpine peatland, Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. We found that the elevated WT levels increased CH4 emissions, while N deposition had nonlinear effects (with stimulation at moderate levels but inhibition at higher levels). In contrast no clear pattern of the effect of WT levels on the cumulative N2O emissions was evident, while N deposition led to a consistent and linear increase (emission factor: 2.3 %–2.8 %), and this was dependent on the WT levels. Given the current N deposition in the Zoige alpine peatland (1.08–17.81 kg N ha−1), our results suggested that the CH4 and N2O emissions from the alpine peatlands could greatly increase in response to the possible doubling N deposition in the future. We believe that our results provide insights into how interactions between climate change and human disturbance will alter CH4 and N2O emissions from this globally important habitat.

Abstract:The Zoige alpine peatlands are one of the highest and largest alpine peatlands in the world and play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Drainage is the main disturbance at Zoige, and the drawdown of the water table level changes CH4 emissions. There is still much uncertainty relating to how CH4 emissions respond to multiple water table levels. Here, we simulated six gradients (−30 cm, −20 cm, −10 cm, 0 cm, 10 cm, and 20 cm) of the water table level through a mesocosm manipulation experiment in the Zoige peatlands. The water table level had a significant effect on CH4 emissions. CH4 emissions did not change with water table levels from −30 cm to −10 cm, but significantly increased as the water table level increased above −10 cm. A significant log-linear relationship (R2 = 0.44, p < 0.001) was found between CH4 emissions and a water table level range from −10 to 20 cm. This study characterized the responses of CH4 emissions to multiple water table levels and provide additional data for accurately evaluating CH4 emissions. The results of this study also have several conservation implications for alpine peatlands.

Abstract:Monthly methane concentration (CH4) level over Zoige alpine wetland, China from October of 2002 to December of 2006 was analyzed based on the SCIAMACHY data. The level was low and might decrease from January to March then increase until August (except for 2006), and then decreased until fall or early winter. The linkage of the CH4, air temperature, precipitation, and soil temperature and moisture content was then explored by using meteorological and GLDAS datasets. The CH4 emission and concentration level in the vertical column over the wetland could be affected more by the temperature than the precipitation.

Abstract:Purpose Alpine wetland ecosystems can contribute large amounts of methane (CH 4 ) to the atmosphere; however, their emissions vary with environmental conditions. Microbial activity is known to drive CH 4 emissions, but how environmental conditions determine microbial activity is still uncertain. Here, we seek to quantify the variability of the CH 4 flux, to detect the effects of CH 4 -related microbes on CH 4 emissions, and to study the dependency of these effects on environmental conditions. Materials and methods We measured the CH 4 flux, environmental conditions, and CH 4 -related microbial communities ( mcrA and pmoA gene abundances for methanogens and methanotrophs, respectively) under three hydrological conditions (submerged, soil–water interface, and emerged) from seven sampling sites in the Zoige alpine wetland, China. Results and discussion The CH 4 flux varied greatly from 0 to 41 mg m −2 h −1 in the Zoige alpine wetland. The methanogenic and methanotrophic abundances both showed positive correlations with CH 4 flux, while CH 4 flux increased linearly with the increase of soil water content (SWC) when SWC was above 60%. CH 4 flux and methanogenic and methanotrophic abundances maintained the high levels when soil C:N ratio was in the range of 11–24 and decreased exponentially with the increase of soil DOC:TN ratio in Zoige alpine wetland, which might result from its influence on nutrient supply for microbial decomposition process. Conclusion The results provided new insight into the effects of CH 4 -related microbes on CH 4 emission and its response to different environmental conditions and helped us to comprehend the risks of high CH 4 emissions from alpine wetlands under climatic change and anthropogenic disturbance.

The Primary Drivers of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Along the Water Table Gradient in the Zoige Alpine Peatland

Abstract:Zoige alpine peatland as the highest and largest peat swamp area in the world plays an important role in regulating global climate change and stabilizing GHG emissions, and GHG emissions are getting more and more concern due to water table decline induced by the combined effects of climate warming and digging ditches in Zoige alpine peatland. Therefore, emissions of CH4, CO2, and N2O were investigated in situ along different water table transects in Zoige peatland. Results showed that the CO2 and N2O fluxes increased along the reduced water table gradient except the lowest water table sites, while CH4 flux was decreased. Meanwhile, the global warming potential decreased from 798.6 to 430.9 g CO2 eq m− 2 h− 1 with the declined water table. Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that SOC was the primary factor explaining the variations of CO2 and N2O fluxes across different water table levels, and soil water content was the most important factor to explain the CH4 flux. Water table was the primary driver to determine the GHG fluxes, and the CO2 and N2O emissions were also dependent on the SOC variations. Overall, our results would be beneficial to understand the mechanism of water table effect on GHG emission in alpine peatland ecosystem and provide supports for alpine peatland management in the future.

Abstract:Rapid climate change and intensified human activities have resulted in water table lowering (WTL) and enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition in Tibetan alpine wetlands. These changes may alter the magnitude and direction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, affecting the climate impact of these fragile ecosystems. We conducted a mesocosm experiment combined with a metagenomics approach (GeoChip 5.0) to elucidate the effects of WTL (-20 cm relative to control) and N deposition (30 kg N ha-1 yr-1 ) on carbon dioxide (CO2 ), methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) fluxes as well as the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that WTL reduced CH4 emissions by 57.4% averaged over three growing seasons compared with no-WTL plots, but had no significant effect on net CO2 uptake or N2 O flux. N deposition increased net CO2 uptake by 25.2% in comparison with no-N deposition plots and turned the mesocosms from N2 O sinks to N2 O sources, but had little influence on CH4 emissions. The interactions between WTL and N deposition were not detected in all GHG emissions. As a result, WTL and N deposition both reduced the global warming potential (GWP) of growing season GHG budgets on a 100-year time horizon, but via different mechanisms. WTL reduced GWP from 337.3 to -480.1 g CO2 -eq m-2 mostly because of decreased CH4 emissions, while N deposition reduced GWP from 21.0 to -163.8 g CO2 -eq m-2 , mainly owing to increased net CO2 uptake. GeoChip analysis revealed that decreased CH4 production potential, rather than increased CH4 oxidation potential, may lead to the reduction in net CH4 emissions, and decreased nitrification potential and increased denitrification potential affected N2 O fluxes under WTL conditions. Our study highlights the importance of microbial mechanisms in regulating ecosystem-scale GHG responses to environmental changes.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) deposition has increased in recent years and is significantly affected by global change and human activities. Wetlands are atmospheric CH4 and N2O sources and may be affected by changes in N deposition. To reveal the effects of increased N deposition on peatland greenhouse gas exchange, we observed the CH4 and N2O emissions from controlled microcosms collected from a temperate peatland in the Xiaoxing’an mountains, Northeast China. We found that the moss biomass did not change, but the total herb biomass increased by 94% and 181% with 5 and 10-times-higher N deposition, respectively. However, there were no significant changes in CH4 emissions from the microcosms with N addition. The unchanged CH4 emissions were mainly caused by the opposite effect of increased nitrate and ammonium concentrations on soil CH4 production and the increased plant biomass on CH4 emission. We also found that the manipulated microcosms with 5 and 10-times-higher N deposition had 8 and 20-times-higher seasonal average N2O emissions than the control microcosms, respectively. The increased N2O emissions were mainly caused by short-term (≤7 d) pulse emissions after N addition. The pulse N2O emission peaks were up to 1879.7 and 3836.5 μg m−2 h−1 from the microcosms with 5 and 10-times-higher N deposition, respectively. Nitrate and ammonium concentrations increasing in the soil pore water were the reason for the N2O emissions enhanced by N addition. Our results indicate that the increase in N deposition had no effects on the CH4 emissions but increased the N2O emissions of the temperate peatland. Moreover, pulse emissions are very important for evaluating the effect of N addition on N2O emissions.

Abstract:Alpine wetlands are hotspots of carbon (C) storage and methane emission, and they could be key contributors to global warming. In recent years, rapid warming has lowered the water table in alpine wetlands on the Tibetan Plateau, concurrent with intensified nitrogen (N) deposition via anthropogenic activities. We carried out a field experiment to investigate the ecological impacts of these two factors on soil bacterial and functional communities, which are essential drivers of greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen amendment alone decreased the phylogenetic alpha-diversity of bacterial communities which could be offset by lowered water table. In contrast, microbial functional alpha-diversity, revealed by a high-throughput microarray, remained unchanged. Both bacterial and functional beta-diversity responded to lowered water table, but only bacterial community responded to N amendment. The alpha-Proteobacteria, beta-Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the major responsive bacterial lineages, and C degradation, methanogenesis, alkaline shock, and phosphorus oxidation were the major responsive functional processes. Partitioning analysis revealed that N amendment changed bacterial community structure mainly via species loss processes but did not affect bacterial functional communities, with soil pH and ammonium as the key factors influencing changes in bacterial community structure. Conversely, lowered water table altered bacterial and functional communities through species substitution processes linked to soil pH and soil moisture. According to our results, the response mechanisms of microbial communities to lowered water table and N amendment are fundamentally different in alpine wetlands.
Effects of water table lowering and mowing on soil ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in alpine wetlands

Abstract:Wetlands serve as the main sources and sinks of greenhouse gases. Understanding nitrogen cycling in wetlands would greatly help in the assessment of their response and feedback to global climate change. To investigate the effect of water table lowering and mowing on soil nitrification and denitrification in wetlands, a simulated water table lowering via digging drainage ditches at different depths and mowing experiment was set up in the Zoige peatland in the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in 2013. The abundances of ammonia-oxidizing ar-chaea, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, and denitrifying groups were detected using a real-time PCR approach. Results based on the samples taken in July 2014 showed soil moisture decreased significantly with water table lowering. Both water table lowering and mowing significant-ly decreased soil heterotrophic respiration.The abundances of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers did not change under the treatments of wa-ter table lowering and mowing, whereas the ratio of abundance of AOA-amoA to AOB-amoA was significantly influenced by both mowing and interaction of mowing and water table lowering.Mowing significantly increased the relative abundance of the AOB-amoA gene but had no influence on that of the AOA-amoA gene, suggesting that the predominant role of AOB in ammonia oxidation.The abundance of nirS gene was higher than that of the nirK gene, indicating that the nirS gene was more sensitive to water table lowering and mowing. With the decline of water table, mowing promoted AOB-driven ammonia oxidation, while higher abundance of denitrifiers mitigated the accumulation of ni-trate originated from ammonia oxidation, resulting in low soil nitrate content.
Effects of water tables and nitrogen application on soil bacterial community diversity, network structure, and function in an alpine wetland, China

Abstract:Nitrogen deposition and water tables are important factors to control soil microbial community structure. However, the specific effects and mechanisms of nitrogen deposition and water tables coupling on bacterial diversity, abundance, and community structure in arid alpine wetlands remain unclear. The nitrogen deposition (0, 10, and 20 kg N/(hm 2 ·a)) experiments were conducted in the Bayinbulak alpine wetland with different water tables (perennial flooding, seasonal waterlogging, and perennial drying). The 16S rRNA (ribosomal ribonucleic acid) gene sequencing technology was employed to analyze the changes in bacterial community diversity, network structure, and function in the soil. Results indicated that bacterial diversity was the highest under seasonal waterlogging condition. However, nitrogen deposition only affected the bacterial Chao1 and beta diversity indices under seasonal waterlogging condition. The abundance of bacterial communities under different water tables showed significant differences at the phylum and genus levels. The dominant phylum, Proteobacteria, was sensitive to soil moisture and its abundance decreased with decreasing water tables. Although nitrogen deposition led to changes in bacterial abundance, such changes were small compared with the effects of water tables. Nitrogen deposition with 10 kg N/(hm 2 ·a) decreased bacterial edge number, average path length, and robustness. However, perennial flooding and drying conditions could simply resist environmental changes caused by 20 kg N/(hm 2 ·a) nitrogen deposition and their network structure remain unchanged. The sulfur cycle function was dominant under perennial flooding condition, and carbon and nitrogen cycle functions were dominant under seasonal waterlogging and perennial drying conditions. Nitrogen application increased the potential function of part of nitrogen cycle and decreased the potential function of sulfur cycle in bacterial community. In summary, composition of bacterial community in the arid alpine wetland was determined by water tables, and diversity of bacterial community was inhibited by a lower water table. Abstract:Purpose Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition may break the original carbon (C) and N balance in the ecosystems. The effects of N deposition on terrestrial ecosystems, especially in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) regions have become a major research topic. However, the responses of soil active carbon fractions to N deposition in the QTP remain unknown. Methods We conducted a 2-year field experiment with four N addition levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 g m −2 a −1 ) in the QTP and collected soil samples from three soil layers (0–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm) to study how N deposition affects soil carbon components (soil organic carbon, SOC; microbial biomass carbon, MBC; dissolved organic carbon, DOC) and their relationships. Results N deposition significantly increased the SOC content in the 0–10-cm layer ( P < 0.01), MBC content firstly increased, and then decreased with the increase of N deposition, the MBC content in the 0–10-cm layer changed the most significantly, and the DOC content decreased significantly with the increase of N addition level. The SOC, DOC, and MBC content had obvious seasonal variation, and the variation trend was not consistent. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that soil bulk density (BD) and aboveground biomass were significantly related to different SOC fractions. Conclusions Our results showed that atmospheric N deposition reduces the active carbon content by affecting aboveground biomass, resulting in the increase of SOC storage. Therefore, N deposition may negatively affect the active organic carbon and may change the C pool function of the wet meadow soil on the QTP.

Abstract:Wetland ecosystems store large amounts of carbon, and CO2 and CH4 fluxes from this ecosystem receive the double impact of climate change and human activities. Nonetheless, research on how multi-gradient warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions affect these wetland greenhouse gas emissions is still limited, particularly in alpine wetland ecosystems. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment on the Tibetan Plateau wetlands, investigating the effects of warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions on the CO2 and CH4 fluxes in alpine wetlands. Results indicated that warming enhanced the CO2 absorption and CH4 emission in the alpine meadow ecosystem, possibly related to changes in plant growth and microbial activity induced by warming, while we noticed that the promotion of CO2 uptake weakened with the increase in the magnitude of warming, suggesting that there may be a temperature threshold beyond which the ecosystem's capacity for carbon sequestration may be reduced. Nitrogen addition increased CH4 emission, with the effect on CO2 absorption shifting from inhibition to enhancement as the amount of applied nitrogen or phosphorus increased. The interaction between warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions further influenced CH4 emission, exhibiting a synergistic enhancement effect. This study deepens our understanding of the greenhouse gas responses of alpine wetland ecosystems to warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions, which is significant for predicting and managing ecosystem carbon balance under global change.
Spatial Variability of CH4 and N2O Fluxes in Alpine Ecosystems on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The intra- and inter-site spatial variability of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes were investigated in three alpine ecosystems at Haibei station on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau (QTP) in summer 2005 and in sixteen alpine ecosystems with various vegetations across the QTP in summer 2006, respectively. The magnitude of average CH4 emissions from wetlands was at least 100 times larger than average CH4 uptake by grassland, suggesting that the entire QTP is likely to be a source of methane in summertime because of a significant fractional area of wetlands (similar to 2.2%) on the plateau. Intra-site investigation, with sixteen chambers, revealed a significant negative relationship of CH4 emissions with the C/N ratio of aboveground biomass and soil pH in the alpine wetland when all chambers were considered. Moreover, soil oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) had a remarkably strong influence on CH4 emissions for nine chambers above the water level, resulting in a negative exponential relationship. For N2O flux in alpine meadows, a negative relationship with both soil pH and livestock dung biomass was observed. Aboveground plant biomass and soil pH were important variables overall in wetlands. Inter-site investigation found positive and negative relationships between CH4 flux and soil biomass to 5 cm depth in nine grassland and seven wetland sites, respectively. N2O flux showed a moderately strong negative exponential relationship with the C/N ratio of surface soil in the grassland sites. In the wetlands, soil pH was negatively correlated with N2O flux, perhaps due to both reduced N2O release from suppressed nitrification and denitrification. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Global climate warming could affect the methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes between soils and the atmosphere, but how CH4 and N2O fluxes respond to whole-soil warming is unclear. Here, we for the first time investigated the effects of whole-soil warming on CH4 and N2O fluxes in an alpine grassland ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau, and also studied the effects of experimental warming on CH4 and N2O fluxes across terrestrial ecosystems through a global-scale meta-analysis. The whole-soil warming (0-100cm, +4 degrees C) significantly elevated soil N2O emission by 101%, but had a minor effect on soil CH4 uptake. However, the meta-analysis revealed that experimental warming did not significantly alter CH4 and N2O fluxes, and it may be that most field warming experiments could only heat the surface soils. Moreover, the warming-induced higher plant litter and available N in soils may be the main reason for the higher N2O emission under whole-soil warming in the alpine grassland. We need to pay more attention to the long-term response of greenhouse gases (including CH4 and N2O fluxes) from different soil depths to whole-soil warming over year-round, which could help us more accurately assess and predict the ecosystem-climate feedback under realistic warming scenarios in the future.

Abstract:Climate warming and drying has led to a sharp increase in nitrogen (N) emissions from the boreal peatland soils, but the underlying microbial-mediated mechanism is still unclear. We reviewed the responses of soil N transformation and emission in alpine peatland to temperature increases and water table changes, the interaction between soil anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) and NO3- dissimilatory reduction processes, and soil N2O production pathways and their contributions. There are several knowledge gaps. First, the amount of N loss in peatlands in alpine areas is seriously underestimated because most studies focused only on soil N2O emissions and ignored the release of N2. Second, the contribution of Anammox process to N2 emissions from peatlands is not quantified. Third, there is a lack of quantification of the relative contributions of Anammox, bacterial denitrification, and fungal co-denitrification processes to N2 loss. Finally, the decoupling mechanism of Anammox and NO3- reduction processes under a warming and drying climate scenario is not clear. Considering aforementioned shortages in previous studies, we proposed the directions and contents for future research. Through building an experimental platform with field warming and water level controlling, combining stable isotope, molecular biology, and metagenomics technology, the magnitude, composition ratio and main controlling factors of N emissions (N2O, NO, and N2) in boreal peatlands should be systematically investigated. The interaction among the main N loss processes in soils as well as the relative contributions of nitrification, anaerobic ammonia oxidation, and denitrification to N2O and N2 productions should be investigated and quantified. Furthermore, the sensitive microbial groups and the coupling between soil N transformations and microbial community succession should be clarified to reveal the microbiological mechanism underlying the responses of soil N turnover process to climate warming and drying.
Methane emissions from an alpine wetland on the Tibetan Plateau: Neglected but vital contribution of the nongrowing season

Abstract:The vast wetlands on the Tibetan Plateau are expected to be an important natural source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere. The magnitude, patterns and environmental controls of CH4 emissions on different timescales, especially during the nongrowing season, remain poorly understood, because of technical limitations and the harsh environments. We conducted the first study on year-round CH4 fluxes in an alpine wetland using the newly developed LI-COR LI-7700 open-path gas analyzer. We found that the total annual CH4 emissions were 26.4 and 33.8 g CH(4)m(-2) in 2012 and 2013, respectively, and the nongrowing season CH4 emissions accounted for 43.2-46.1% of the annual emissions, highlighting an indispensable contribution that was often overlooked by previous studies. A two-peak seasonal variation in CH4 fluxes was observed, with a small peak in the spring thawing period and a large one in the peak growing season. We detected a significant difference in the diurnal variation of CH4 fluxes between the two seasons, with two peaks in the growing season and one peak in the nongrowing season. We found that the CH4 fluxes during the growing season were well correlated with soil temperature, water table depth and gross primary production, whereas the CH4 fluxes during the nongrowing season were highly correlated with soil temperature. Our results suggested that the CH4 emission during the nongrowing season cannot be ignored and the vast wetlands on the Tibetan plateau will have the potential to exert a positive feedback on climate considering the increasing warming, particularly in the nongrowing season in this region.
Divergent Regulating Modes of Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Different Soil Layers under Altered Precipitation Regime

Abstract:How soil microbial communities regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as precipitation events are “repackaged” from many small events to a few larger events has received significant attention. Previous studies have quantified the net fluxes of GHG across the soil/atmosphere interface; however, they have not investigated GHG fluxes in soil profiles under altered precipitation regimes. This study investigated the joint regulation of topsoil and subsoil microorganisms on GHG emissions under changes in precipitation regime in an alpine meadow. Severely altered precipitation regimes have led to changes in NO3–, DOC, and soil moisture among different soil layers, which can be attributed to a combination of substrate migration and changes in carbon and nitrogen mineralization rates. Topsoil microorganisms exhibit high sensitivity to severe changes in the precipitation regime, which can affect their biomass, microbial composition, and metabolic activities. In contrast, the activity of subsoil microorganisms remains relatively stable. This was likely due to the heterogeneity of dominant regulators across soil layers. Under the severely altered precipitation regime, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions significantly decreased by approximately 11.08%. This decrease was primarily due to a reduction in microbial respiration in the topsoil. The decrease in both topsoil and subsoil methane (CH4) uptake likely caused the inhibition of the CH4 sink from the surface (by approximately 11.60%). While a 1.75-fold increase in nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions under the severe changes in the precipitation regime might be primarily related to the increase in subsoil N2O emissions caused by the increasing abundance of subsoil denitrifiers, as well as the addition of subsoil nitrate content and soil moisture. This study revealed the divergent modes of microbial communities at different soil layers regulating GHG fluxes, which could guide the improvement of ecological models predicting GHG emissions in response to altered precipitation regimes.
