Abstract:Developing new strategies to enhance adsorbents' gas separation performance is highly desirable. In this contribution, we created a post-synthetic modification approach to enhance the C2H2/CO2 separation performance for an ultramicroporous MOF (NKMOF-2) platform that underwent a single-crystal-to-single-crystal in the counter anion exchange process. Substitution of Cl- with BF4- not only greatly improved the water stability of the NKMOF-2 platform but also enhanced their adsorption capacity and separation performance. Mixture gas breakthrough experiments revealed that the anion exchange strategy was a powerful approach for boosting the selective adsorption of C2H2 over CO2. Moreover, we first observed that the C2H2/CO2 separation performance could be enhanced dramatically by elevating the test temperature. This study not only enriches the toolbox to create efficient MOF adsorbents for gas separation but also provides a fundamental understanding of the enhanced gas uptake and separation performance.

Abstract:The separation of C2H2/CO2 is an important process in industry but challenged by the trade-off of capacity and selectivity owning to their close physical properties and identical kinetic molecular size. Herein, we reported a new metal organic framework ZNU-3 (ZNU = Zhejiang Normal University) with flexibility controlled by abundant hydrogen-bonds for highly selective molecular sieving of C2H2 from CO2, CH4, C2H4 and C2H6 using commercially available cost-effective ligands. At 1.0 bar and 298 K, the uptake capacity of C2H2 is 81.0 cm(3) (STP) g(-1), while the CO2, C2H4, C2H6, CH4, N-2 uptake capacities are only 5.4, 5.3, 1.0, 1.1, 1.1 cm(3) (STP) respectively. Such high uptake ratios of C2H2 over other C2 and C1 gases have rarely been achieved. Particularly, the C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 14.9 is only secondary to that of the benchmark UTSA-300a and much higher than those of all other porous materials. Dynamic breakthrough experiments with equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixtures showed that the retaining time of C2H2 is nearly 2 fold of that of CO2, indicating the excellent practical separation performance of ZNU-3 for C2H2/CO2 mixtures. Modeling studies indicated that C2H2 is mainly trapped by two opposite carboxylic groups with additional small contribution from pi center dot center dot center dot pi packing between pyridine ring and planar C C moiety.

Abstract:The adsorptive separation of C2H4 and C2H6, as an alternative to distillation units consuming high energy, is a promising yet challenging research. The great similarity in the molecular size of C2H4 and C2H6 brings challenges to the regulation of adsorbents to realize efficient dynamic separation. Herein, we reported the enhancement of the kinetic separation of C2H4/C2H6 by controlling the crystal size of ZnAtzPO4 (Atz = 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) to amplify the diffusion difference of C2H4 and C2H6. Through adjusting the synthesis temperature, reactant concentration, and ligands/metal ions molar ratio, ZnAtzPO4 crystals with different sizes were obtained. Both single-component kinetic adsorption tests and binary-component dynamic breakthrough experiments confirmed the enhancement of the dynamic separation of C2H4/C2H6 with the increase in the crystal size of ZnAtzPO4. The separation selectivity of C2H4/C2H6 increased from 1.3 to 98.5 with the increase in the crystal size of ZnAtzPO4. This work demonstrated the role of morphology and size control of adsorbent crystals in the improvement of the C2H4/C2H6 kinetic separation performance.

Abstract:The CO, sequestration is extremely urgent due to the growing greenhouse effect and the subsequent serious environmental crisis. The development of porous materials with a size-selective effect for CO2 from other molecules still remains a challenge, due to the difficulties to control pore size within 3-4 angstrom. Here, we proposed and designed a novel anion-pillared material (termed as ZU-66, ZU = Zhejiang University) embedded with "molecular rotors" toward the industrially relevant CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 separation. Interestingly, the temporarily fixed molecular rotors under the ambient condition afforded a size-selective channel for CO2 from CH4 and N-2. To our best knowledge, there were only a handful of examples achieving the molecular sieving between CO2 and CH4. Such a behavior endowed ZU-66 with high separation selectivity for both CO2/CH4 (136) and CO2/N-2 (355) and high CO2 capacity (4.56 mmol g(-1), 298 K, 1 bar). The actual breakthrough experiment further verified its great potential in both CO2/CH4 and CO2/N-2 separation. The specific adsorption behavior within ZU-66 was further revealed through the modeling calculation.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) promises a practical way to produce high-purity C2H2 required for industrial applications. However, challenges exist in the pore environment engineering of porous materials to recognize two molecules due to their similar molecular sizes and physical properties. Herein, we report a strategy to optimize pore environments of multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation by tuning metal components, functionalized linkers, and terminal ligands. The optimized material UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM, constructed from Al3+ clusters, fluorine-functionalized organic linkers, and benzimidazole terminal ligands, demonstrated the highest separation efficiency (C2H2/CO2 uptake ratio of 2.6) and highest C2H2 productivity among UPC-200 systems. Experimental and computational studies revealed the contribution of small pore size and polar functional groups on the C2H2/CO2 selectivity and indicated the practical C2H2/CO2 separation of UPC-200(Al)-F-BIM.

Abstract:The high-efficiency separation of C2H2/CO2 has important research significance and industrial value. The currently reported metal–organic framework (MOF) adsorbents for the separation of C2H2/CO2 are generally based on unsaturated metal sites, strong hydrogen bonds or strong electrostatic interaction sites, which suffer from difficulties in combining selectivity and capacity. Significant efforts have been devoted to solving this trade-off effect, and considerable achievements have been made. Herein, we review the research progress of MOFs for C2H2/CO2 separation in the past few years according to the properties of the material structure, and prospect the future research directions.

Abstract:The separation of C2H2/C2H4 mixtures is of industrial importance in the production of high-purity C2H4 and C2H2. The primary objective of this work is to enhance the selectivity of C2H2/C2H4 separation by developing a method for appropriate modification of porous adsorbents. Toward this end, directly doping low-content Na+ ions into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via cation exchange is proposed in this work. Relative to the pristine COF, COF-ECUT-1, with C2H2 and C2H4 adsorption capacities of 55.39 cm(3) g(-1) and 28.63 cm(3) g(-1), the Na+-anchored phase with just 4.0 wt% sodium content, Na@COF-ECUT-1, enables largely enhanced adsorption ability with the corresponding values of 89.70 cm(3) g(-1) and 49.26 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. As a result, the adsorption selectivity of C2H2 over that of C2H4 is enhanced from 6.33 to 9.41, and the separation potential estimated by the simulated transient breakthrough is largely improved about three-fold. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the trap of Na+ within the COF channel affords strong affinity towards C2H2 or C2H4 through Na-pi interactions and relatively stronger contact for C2H2 than for C2H4 is observed. This result is in line with the experimental results of both enhanced C2H2 and C2H4 adsorption capacity and C2H2/C2H4 separation performance. This work outlines a general and simple method to enhance the gas separation performance upon COF materials.

Abstract:The potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for application in gas separation processes has been widely recognized. Nonetheless, due to their structural instability and high cost, few MOFs have been utilized in the industry. Among them, UiO-66 is one of the most promising materials which displays good structural stability and its preparation is considered economical. Notably, it also provides a valuable platform for the construction of other robust MOFs for various applications. Herein, trifluoromethyl ligands were introduced into the UiO-66 framework to optimize pore environment also to improve its C2H2 recognition ability. Single component adsorption and the corresponding IAST calculation confirmed that compared to UiO-66, UiO-66-(CF3)2 exhibited 2∼3 times higher selectivity for C2H2/C2H4 and C2H2/CO2 separation. Enhanced selectivity resulted in a significantly improved C2H4 separation productivity (56 compared to 36 cm3/cm3) and a reduction in the co-adsorption time. Importantly, the modified UiO-66 framework could be prepared using a simple method and inherited a highly stable structure and good cycling performance of the original material.

Abstract:Adsorptive separation of C2H2/CO2 is industrially important and feasible but the design of highly efficient adsorbents remains very challenging owing to the almost identical physicochemical properties of the two gases. Herein, we constructed two new microporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), termed CTGU-39/40 (CTGU = China Three Gorges University), with 2-fold interpenetrating frameworks and unique pore geometry/chemistry for C2H2/CO2 separation. Both the activated MOFs (CTGU-39/40-a) can preferentially adsorb C2H2 over CO2 with excellent selectivity of 8.4 and 3.3 at 298 K and 100 kPa, respectively, as verified by static adsorption measurements. More importantly, attributed to the suitable pore aperture size (∼5 Å) and abundant adsorption sites, CTGU-39-a combines exceptionally high packing density of C2H2 (0.41 g mL−1) and moderate isosteric heat of adsorption (Q st) for C2H2 (26.8 kJ mol−1), outperforming most previously reported adsorbents. Theoretical calculations reveal that the preferential adsorption of C2H2 within two MOFs is driven by cooperative adsorption behavior through multiple H-bonding and Coulomb interactions. Experimental breakthrough results further confirmed their practical separation ability and recyclability toward an equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixture at different feeding rates. This work may offer new insights into the design of advanced porous materials for C2H2 purification and potentially other gas separations.

Abstract:Acetylene (C2H2) and ethylene (C2H4) both are important chemical raw materials and energy fuel gasses. But the effective removement of trace C2H2 from C2H4 and the purification of C2H2 from carbon dioxide (CO2) are particularly challenging in the petrochemical industry. As a class of porous physical adsorbent, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great success in separation and purification of light hydrocarbon gas. Herein, we rationally designed four novel MOFs by the strategy of pore space partition (PSP) via introducing triangular tri(pyridin-4-yl)-amine (TPA) into the 1D hexagonal channels of acs-type parent skeleton. By modulating the functional groups of linear dicarboxylate linkers for the parent skeleton, a series of isoreticular PSP-MOFs (SNNU-278−281) were successfully obtained. The synergistic effects of suitable pore size and Lewis basic functional groups make these MOFs ideal C2H2 adsorbents. The gas adsorption experimental results show that all MOFs have excellent C2H2 uptakes. Specially, SNNU-278 demonstrates a high C2H2 uptake of 149.7 cm3/g at 273 K and 1 atm. Meanwhile, SNNU-278−281 MOFs also show extremely great C2H2 separation from CO2 and C2H4. The optimized SNNU-281 with high-density hydroxy groups exhibits extraordinary C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 dynamic breakthrough interval times up to 31 min/g and 17 min/g under 298 K and 1 bar.

Abstract:A guest cation functionalization strategy using the anionic framework SU‐102 as the prototype material is employed to develop highly efficient adsorbent for acetylene/carbon dioxide separation. The introduction of Li+ in SU‐102 fosters a synergistic interplay of electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds with gas molecules, significantly enhancing the gas adsorption, and separation performance of the SU‐102. The removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from acetylene (C2H2) production is critical yet difficult due to their similar physicochemical properties. Despite extensive research has been conducted on metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) for C2H2/CO2 separation, approaches to designing functionalized MOFs remain limited. Enhancing gas adsorption through simple pore modification holds great promise in molecular recognition and industrial separation processes. This study proposes a guest cation functionalization strategy using the anionic framework SU‐102 as the prototype material. Specifically, the guest cation Li+ is introduced into the skeleton by ion exchange to obtain SU‐102‐Li+. This strategy generates strong interactions between Li+ and gas molecules, thereby elevating C2H2 uptake to 49.18 cm3 g−1 and CO2 uptake to 29.88 cm3 g−1, marking 20.3% and 36.9% improvements over the parent material, respectively. In addition, ideal adsorbed solution theory selectivity calculations and dynamic breakthrough experiments confirmed the superior and stable separation performance of SU‐102‐Li+ for C2H2/CO2 (25 min g−1) and C2H2 productivity (1.55 mmol g−1). Theoretical calculations further reveals the unique molecular recognition mechanism between gas molecules and guest cations.

Abstract:The efficient separation of C2H2/CO2 is a challenging problem due to their similar physical properties. This is in addition to the risk of explosion when pressuring C2H2 over 2.07 bar. Besides, understanding the framework–guest and guest–guest interactions is also critical to achieving an optimal separation. Herein, we report the development of a robust and low-cost adsorbent, MIL-160(Al), with an extremely high acetylene volumetric capacity of 227 cm3(STP)/cm3 and high C2H2/CO2 selectivity of 7.1 under ambient conditions. We combine in situ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and in-depth theoretical calculations to unravel the synergistic interactions, driven by the hydrogen bonding of C2H2-MOF, and the electrostatic interactions between C2H2 molecules in the confined ångström-scale pores. This suitable pore confinement is also reflected in the rotation of the MOF ligands and the resultant evolution in the interacting distances between the metal–organic framework (MOF) backbone and C2H2 molecules. Acetylene is adsorbed as a unique dimer in MIL-160(Al), leading to an extremely efficient packing inside the pores. Abstract:Ethylene (C2H4) is one of the most significant substances in the petrochemical industry; however, the capture of acetylene (C2H2) in about 1% from C2H2/C2H4 mixtures is a difficult task because of the similarity of their physical properties. With the aggravation of the energy crisis, using metal-organic framework (MOF) materials to purify C2H4 through adsorptive separation is a promising way to save energy and reduce emission. Pore-space partition (PSP) with the aim of enhancing the density of the binding sites and the strength of the host-guest interactions is an effective means to promote a solution for the challenging gas separation problems. Herein, we report a new embedding metal-carboxylate chain-induced topology upgrade strategy within a MOF to realize PSP and separation of C2H2/C2H4 mixtures. As a proof of concept, we construct a microporous MOF (NUM-12) utilizing the in situ insertion of cobalt terephthalic chains into a pretargeted ant-type framework during synthesis. Because of the attainment of an elaborately tuned aperture size and a specific pore environment through this strategy, NUM-12a (activated NUM-12) not only has a remarkable gas sorption capacity and strong interactions for C2H2 but also possesses an excellent purification performance for C2H2/C2H4 mixtures. Both experiments and simulation calculations clearly reveal that NUM-12 is a promising candidate for the separation of C2H2/C2H4, proving the feasibility of this new strategy for developing newly fashioned MOFs with adjustable structure and performance.

Ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can exhibit a pore confinement effect to differentiate gas molecules of similar size. Herein, we report the fine-tuning of pore sizes in sub-nanometer scale on a series of isoreticular MOFs that can realize highly efficient C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation. The subtle structural differences lead to remarkable adsorption performances enhancement. Among four MOF analogs, by integrating appropriate pore size and specific binding sites, [Cu(dps) 2 (SiF 6 )] (SIFSIX-dps-Cu, SIFSIX = SiF 6 2- , dps = 4.4’-dipyridylsulfide, also termed as NCU-100) exhibits the highest C 2 H 2 uptake capacity and C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. At room temperature, the pore space of SIFSIX-dps-Cu significantly inhibits CO 2 molecules but takes up a large amount of C 2 H 2 (4.57 mmol g −1 ), resulting in a high IAST selectivity of 1787 for C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation. The multiple host-guest interactions for C 2 H 2 in both inter- and intralayer cavities are further revealed by dispersion-corrected density functional theory and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Dynamic breakthrough experiments show a clean C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation with a high C 2 H 2 working capacity of 2.48 mmol g −1 .

Abstract:The development of new materials for separating ethylene (C2H4) from ethane (C2H6) by adsorption is of great importance in the petrochemical industry, but remains very challenging owing to their close molecular sizes and physical properties. Using isoreticular chemistry in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enables the precise design and construction of target materials with suitable aperture sizes and functional sites for gas separations. Herein, it is described that fine-tuning of pore size and π-complexation simultaneously in microporous copper(I)-chelated MOFs can remarkably boost the C2H4/C2H6 adsorption selectivity. The judicious choice of organic linkers with a different number of carboxyl groups in the UiO-66 framework not only allows the fine tuning of the pore size but also immobilizes copper(I) ions onto the framework. The tailor-made adsorbent, CuI@UiO-66-(COOH)2, thus possesses the optimal pore window size and chelated Cu(I) ions to form π-complexation with C2H4 molecules. It can rapidly adsorb C2H4 driven by the strong π-complexation interactions, while effectively reducing C2H6 uptake due to the selective size-sieving. Therefore, this material exhibits an ultrahigh C2H4/C2H6 selectivity (80.8), outperforming most previously described benchmark materials. The exceptional separation performance of CuI@UiO-66-(COOH)2 is validated by breakthrough experiments for 50/50 v/v C2H4/C2H6 mixtures under ambient conditions.

Abstract:The removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from acetylene (C2H2) is not only industrially important for acetylene purification but also scientifically challenging owing to their high similarities in physical properties and molecular sizes. Multi-walled and ultramicroporous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can provide multiple specific interactions with C2H2 supplied to form a cooperative effect for efficient separation property. Herein, we report a new strategy involving the extension of vertex to create an infinite multi-walled MOF (In-TATB) by 2,4,6-tris(4-carboxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (H3TATB) and In(III) ions. Two 3D frameworks built by In(III) chains and TATB3− molecules interpenetrate through the strong π–π interactions between triazine rings. Taking advantage of the confined ultramicroporous space (3.8 Å × 4.1 Å) and accessible sites of multiple walls, In-TATB shows high adsorption enthalpy of C2H2 (36.6 kJ mol–1 at 298 K and low-coverage) and excellent separation of C2H2/CO2 mixture with an IAST selectivity of 11.8 (at 298 K and 1 bar). More importantly, both dry and wet breakthrough results validated its exceptional separation performance for C2H2/CO2 mixtures, affording a high dynamic separation factor. This work provides a novel and powerful approach to address this extremely challenging gas separation in industry.

Abstract:Developing porous solid adsorbents with strong interactions toward C2H2 is crucial to achieve C2H2/CO2 separation with high selectivity. Herein, we introduce the concept of "divided linkers" for the construction of metal- organic frameworks (MOFs) with tailored pores and well -positioned adsorption sites. A single CuI node divides the pyrazyl-carboxylate linker 4,4 '-(2,6-pyrazinediyl)dibenzoic acid into two equivalent edges. Furthermore, these edges reticulate with the pseudo-octahedral Zn-based building units to afford a porous multinary framework with single crystallinity and impressive chemical stability. Its appropriate pore size (6.4 angstrom) and high density of interacting sites empower the MOF with high capacity in C2H2 adsorption (104 cm3 g-1) and preferential C2H2 capture over CO2 (selectivity = 3.3) at 298 K. Potential use of the robust architecture for C2H2/CO2 separation is confirmed by the dynamic gas mixture breakthrough experiment.
