Abstract:The field of small molecule electro-activated conversion is becoming a new star in modern catalytic research toward the carbon-neutral future. The advent of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is expected to greatly accelerate the kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), etc., owing to their maximum atomic efficiency, unique quantized energy level structure and strong interaction between well-defined active sites and supports. In this feature article, our group's proposed synthesis methodology applied in electrocatalysis is mainly summarized. Furthermore, we elaborate on how to achieve the stabilization of single metal atoms against migration and agglomeration during the preparation of SACs. Moreover, the electrochemical applications of SACs with a focus on the above heterogeneous reactions are presented. Finally, the prospects for the development and deficiencies of these SACs for electrocatalytic reactions are discussed.

Abstract:The performance and the cost of electrocatalysts play the two most vital roles in the development and application of energy conversion technologies. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are recently emerging as a new frontier in catalysis science. With maximum atom-utilization efficiency and unique properties, SACs exhibit great potential for enabling reasonable use of metal resources and achieving atomic economy. However, fabricating SACs and maintaining the metal centers as atomically dispersed sites under synthesis and catalysis conditions are challenging. Here, we highlight and summarize recent advances in wet-chemistry synthetic methods for SACs with special emphasis on how to achieve the stabilization of single metal atoms against migration and agglomeration. Moreover, we summarize and discuss the electrochemical applications of SACs with a focus on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). At last, the current issues and the prospects for the development of this field are discussed.

Abstract:Supported metal nanostructures are the most widely used type of heterogeneous catalyst in industrial processes. The size of metal particles is a key factor in determining the performance of such catalysts. In particular, because low-coordinated metal atoms often function as the catalytically active sites, the specific activity per metal atom usually increases with decreasing size of the metal particles. However, the surface free energy of metals increases significantly with decreasing particle size, promoting aggregation of small clusters. Using an appropriate support material that strongly interacts with the metal species prevents this aggregation, creating stable, finely dispersed metal clusters with a high catalytic activity, an approach industry has used for a long time. Nevertheless, practical supported metal catalysts are inhomogeneous and usually consist of a mixture of sizes from nanoparticles to subnanometer clusters. Such heterogeneity not only reduces the metal atom efficiency but also frequently leads to undesired side reactions. It also makes it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to uniquely identify and control the active sites of interest. The ultimate small-size limit for metal particles is the single-atom catalyst (SAC), which contains isolated metal atoms singly dispersed on supports. SACs maximize the efficiency of metal atom use, which is particularly important for supported noble metal catalysts. Moreover, with well-defined and uniform single-atom dispersion, SACs offer great potential for achieving high activity and selectivity. In this Account, we highlight recent advances in preparation, characterization, and catalytic performance of SACs, with a focus on single atoms anchored to metal oxides, metal surfaces, and graphene. We discuss experimental and theoretical studies for a variety of reactions, including oxidation, water gas shift, and hydrogenation. We describe advances in understanding the spatial arrangements and electronic properties of single atoms, as well as their interactions with the support. Single metal atoms on support surfaces provide a unique opportunity to tune active sites and optimize the activity, selectivity, and stability of heterogeneous catalysts, offering the potential for applications in a variety of industrial chemical reactions.

Abstract:Electronic structure of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is critical for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis by adjusting the binding energy in oxygen-containing intermediates. However, the regulation of electronic structure has always been a challenge to improve catalytic reactivity. Herein, by introducing a heterogenous metal, the electronic structure through a direct bonding interaction to the active center atom is effectively adjusted. Partial charge transfer between the two atoms optimizes the binding energy of intermediates and reducing the energy barrier of the catalytic reaction. Theoretical calculations confirm these effects and the uniform distribution of 3d orbitals, leading to the improvement of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic reactivity. Benefiting from these attributes, the as-constructed bifunctional catalyst enables outstanding electrocatalytic performances in both oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation in various energy storage systems. The generality and expandability of this strategy is demonstrated by further successful development of other dual-metal catalysts systems with various active metals.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have received tremendous attention in heterogeneous catalysis because of their excellent catalytic performance and robust stability. Metal SACs have exhibited distinctive advantages in activity and selectivity and tunable interactions between the metal atoms and supports. In this review, we have summarized the preparation and performance of metal SACs that have energy-related applications including the oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, N2 reduction reaction, methane conversion, CO2 reduction reaction, CO oxidation reaction, biomass conversion, and environmental pollutant degradation. The current challenges of metal SAC reactions in industrial applications are analyzed. Finally, the development trends of SACs in energy applications are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a wide research in supported single-atom catalysts (SACs), which contain only isolated individual metal atoms dispersed on an appropriate support or coordinated with the surface atoms of the support. The SACs exhibit many fascinating characteristics including high activity, selectivity, and maximum atomic utilization. These characteristics arise from the low coordination status, quantum size effect, and the strong metal–support interaction, which have proved to be very powerful in many typical heterogeneous catalysis field including oxidation, hydrogenation, the water–gas shift reaction, methanol steam reforming, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. In this review, we summarized the recent progress in synthesis, characterizations, properties, and applications of SACs.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention in the field of electrocatalysis due to their 100% atomic utilization efficiency, clear active center and adjustable support. The application of SACs to anodic oxygen evolution substitution reactions with high conversion efficiency and selectivity is undoubtedly promising. Therefore, a full understanding of the interactions between metal single-atom active sites and supports, and an in-depth understanding of the active centers and catalytic mechanisms of SACs in the electro-oxidation of small molecules are the keys to the development of high-performance catalysts. This review focuses on the synthesis of different support SACs and the interactions between single atoms and supports at the interface, and introduces the reaction mechanism of SACs in the electro-oxidation of different small-molecule substrates, such as ethanol, urea and hydrazine, with the aim of providing insights and ideas for the design of more efficient and ideal catalysts. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and future opportunities in the field.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for SACs are also discussed.Some recent experimental and theoretical progress is summarized, aimed at clarifying the structure of single-atom catalysts and how they influence the catalytic performance.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The development of high-performance electrocatalysts is critical for the widespread applications of the sustainable energy technologies. In this context, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated metal sites have attracted more attention because of their maximum atom utilization and remarkable electrocatalytic performance. However, the high surface energy often results in a low loading of the single metal atoms, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we give an up-to-date review on the progress for the SACs. The research progress of noble metal SACs, transition metal SACs, single-atom alloy SACs, and double metal SACs is summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of synthesis strategies including wet chemistry, atomic layer deposition, and high-temperature pyrolysis are discussed. We also propose some new research direction to obtain the high-performance SACs. It is expected to realize widely applications of SACs.

Abstract:Supported and colloidal single-atom catalysts (SACs), which possess excellent catalytic properties, are particularly important in both fundamental studies and practical applications. The progress made in the preparation methods, characterization, catalytic performances and mechanisms of SACs anchored to metal oxides, two-dimensional materials and the surface of metal nanoclusters (NCs) are reviewed. The different techniques for SAC fabrication, including conventional solution methods based on co-precipitation, incipient wetness co-impregnation, and the chemical vapor deposition method, as well as the newer atom layer deposition (ALD) and galvanic replacement methods, are summarized. The main results from experimental and theoretical studies of various catalytic reactions over SACs, including oxidation reactions, hydrogenation, water gas shift, photocatalytic H2 evolution and electrochemical reactions, are also discussed. Moreover, the electronic properties of the single atoms and their interactions with the supports are described to assist in understanding the origin of the high catalytic activity and selectivity of SACs. Finally, possible future research directions of SACs and their applications are proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with unique electronic structure and coordination environment have attracted much attention due to its maximum atomic efficiency in the catalysis fields. However, it is still a great challenge to rationally regulate the coordination environments of SACs and improve the loading of metal atoms for SACs during catalysis progress. Generally, carbon-based materials with excellent electrical conductivity and large specific surface area are widely used as catalyst supports to stabilize metal atoms. Meanwhile, carbon-based material-supported SACs have also been extensively studied and applied in various energy conversion reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO<sub>2</sub>RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, rational synthesis methods and advanced characterization techniques were introduced and summarized in this review. Then, the theoretical design strategies and construction methods for carbon-based material-supported SACs in electrocatalysis applications were fully discussed, which are of great significance for guiding the coordination regulation and improving the loading of SACs. In the end, the challenges and future perspectives of SACs were proposed, which could largely contribute to the development of single atom catalysts at the turning point.

Abstract:Due to the expensive price and the low reserve of noble metals in nature, much attention has been paid to single-atom catalysts (SACs)—especially single-atom noble metal catalysts—owing to their maximum atomic utilization and dispersion. The emergence of SACs greatly decreases the amount of precious metals, improves the catalytic activity, and makes the catalytic process progressively economic and sustainable. However, the most remarkable challenge is the active sites and their stability against migration and aggregation under practical conditions. This review article summarizes the preparation strategies of SACs and their catalytic applications for the oxidation of methane, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and the reduction of nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the perspectives and challenges of SACs in future research and practical applications are proposed. It is envisioned that the results summarized in this review will stimulate the interest of more researchers in developing SACs that are effective in catalyzing the reactions related to the environmental pollution control.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted increasing research interests owing to their unique electronic structures, quantum size effects and maximum utilization rate of atoms. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are good candidates to prepare SACs owing to the atomically dispersed metal nodes in MOFs and abundant N and C species to stabilize the single atoms. In addition, the distance of adjacent metal atoms can be turned by adjusting the size of ligands and adding volatile metal centers to promote the formation of isolated metal atoms. Moreover, the diverse metal centers in MOFs can promote the preparation of dual-atom catalysts (DACs) to improve the metal loading and optimize the electronic structures of the catalysts. The applications of MOFs derived SACs and DACs for electrocatalysis, including oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction and nitrogen reduction reaction are systematically summarized in this Review. The corresponding synthesis strategies, atomic structures and electrocatalytic performances of the catalysts are discussed to provide a deep understanding of MOFs-based atomic electrocatalysts. The catalytic mechanisms of the catalysts are presented, and the crucial challenges and perspectives are proposed to promote further design and applications of atomic electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are attracting extensive attention due to their incredibly catalytic activity and selectivity, high utilization of metal atoms, and obvious cost reduction. The unique ordered porous materials (OPMs) are promising carriers for stabilizing single atoms due to their large surface areas and uniformly tunable pore sizes. Meantime, the geometric and electronic structures of single-atom metals can be tuned by the interaction between the single-atoms (SAs) and OPMs to enhance the catalytic activity of SACs. The SACs based on OPMs, such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and ordered mesoporous materials, have been developing fast recently. Herein, we review recent advancements on structural feature, synthetic strategy, characterization technique, and catalytic applications of OPMs-based SACs. The opportunities and challenges about SAs/OPMs are also provided to develop the novel catalysts with superior catalytic performances in the future.

Abstract:Single atom catalysts have emerged as a new frontier due to almost 100% atom utilization efficiency along with outstanding catalytic performance. This review highlights the recent advancements in tailoring local structure and metal‐support interaction of single atom catalysts to gain a deeper insight into the structure‐performance relationship. The challenges and opportunities in this field are further discussed.Single atom catalysts (SACs) that integrate the merits of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been attracting considerable attention in recent years. The individual metal atoms of SACs can be stabilized on supports through various unsaturated chemical sites or space confinement for achieving the maximized atom utilization efficiency. Aside from the development of strategies for preparing high loading and high purity SACs, another key challenge in this field is precisely manipulating the geometric and electronic structure of catalytically active single metal sites, thus rendering the catalysts exceptionally reactive, selective, and stabile compared to their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advancements in SACs for heterogeneous catalysis from the perspective of local structural regulation and the synergistic coupling effect between metal species and supports. Special emphasis is placed on the elucidation of the catalytic structure‐performance relationship in terms of coordination environment, valence state and metal‐support interactions by advanced characterization and theoretical studies. Select in situ or operando characterization techniques for tracking the SACs' structure evolution under realistic conditions are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities are discussed to offer insight into the rational design of more intriguing SACs with high activity and distinct chemoselectivity.

Abstract:The recent advances in electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) are thoroughly reviewed. This comprehensive review focuses on the single‐atom catalysts (SACs) including Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Sn, W, Bi, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Ir, Pt, and Au with single‐metal sites or dual‐metal sites. The recent development of single‐atom electrocatalysts with novel configurations and compositions is documented. The understanding of the process–structure–property relationships is highlighted. For the SACs, their electrocatalytic performance and stability in fuel cells, zinc–air batteries, electrolyzers, CO2RR, and NRR are summarized. Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are emerging as the most promising catalysts for various electrochemical reactions. The isolated dispersion of metal atoms enables high density of active sites, and the simplified structure makes them ideal model systems to study the structure-performance relationships. However, the activity of SACs is still insufficient, and the stability of SACs is usually inferior but has received little attention, hindering their practical applications in real devices. Moreover, the catalytic mechanism on a single metal site is unclear, leading the development of SACs to rely on trial-and-error experiments. How can one break the current bottleneck of active sites density? How can one further increase the activity/stability of metal sites? In this Perspective, we discuss the underlying reasons for the current challenges and identify precisely controlled synthesis involving designed precursors and innovative heat-treatment techniques as the key for the development of high-performance SACs. In addition, advanced operando characterizations and theoretical simulations are essential for uncovering the true structure and electrocatalytic mechanism of an active site. Finally, future directions that may arise breakthroughs are discussed.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysis is an important class of reactions in industrial production, especially in green chemical synthesis, and environmental and organic catalysis. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, due to their outstanding catalytic activity, high selectivity, and maximum atomic utilization efficiency. The high specific surface energy of SACs, however, results in the migration and aggregation of isolated atoms under typical reaction conditions. The controllable preparation of highly efficient and stable SACs has been a serious challenge for applications. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in the precise synthesis of SACs and their different heterogeneous catalyses, especially involving the oxidation and reduction reactions of small organic molecules. At the end of this review, we also introduce the challenges confronted by single-atom materials in heterogeneous catalysis. This review aims to promote the generation of novel high-efficiency SACs by providing an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the current development in this research field.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer high reactivity and selectivity toward catalytic reaction while maximizing the utilization of active components. Unfortunately, single-atom sites are susceptible to sintering and agglomerating into thermodynamically stable nanoclusters due to their high surface energy. Introducing appropriate supports to optimize the local coordination environment and electronic properties, as well as induce strong metal-support interactions (SMSI), is essential to preventing sintering. Although a range of potential SACs with low-cost supports are emerging as promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, the real roles and key factors of supports that govern the catalytic properties of these SACs remain ambiguous. Aiming at understanding the bonding between atomic sites and supports and how this relates to the catalytic performance, we herein summarize the recent experimental and computational efforts of SACs toward electrocatalysis. Moreover, the real role of the support in the SACs plays in affecting the electrocatalytic reaction is also emphasized. Furthermore, before ending this review, we have also proposed the prospects and challenges of the advanced SACs for the application in the field of electrocatalytic energy conversion.
