Abstract:Up-conversion luminescence material (UCLM) is a unique rare earth doped luminescence material, which converts long-wavelength light into short-wavelength light through multi-photon absorption mechanism. UCLM have broad application prospect in material science and biology because their unique optical and chemical properties including minimum photodamage to living organisms, low autofluorescence, high signal-to-noise ratio and detection sensitivity, and high penetration depth in biological or environmental samples. Thus, UCLM is rapidly emerging as a potential candidate for new biomedical applications. With the increasing number of confirmed cancer cases in the world, the disadvantages of existing treatment methods are also increasingly prominent, such as the high side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and the low success rate of surgical resection, which urgently requires us to promote the development and research of new treatment methods. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with unique advantages and low systematic toxicity has been proposed as a relatively less invasive tool, widely applied in the anti-cancer therapy and nanomedicine field. Therefore, PDT stands out for its low side effects. The application of composite functional photosensitive nanoparticles based on UCLM into PDT can promote the development of cancer treatment.
