Abstract:In the field of medical image analysis within deep learning (DL), the importance of employing advanced DL techniques cannot be overstated. DL has achieved impressive results in various areas, making it particularly noteworthy for medical image analysis in healthcare. The integration of DL with medical image analysis enables real-time analysis of vast and intricate datasets, yielding insights that significantly enhance healthcare outcomes and operational efficiency in the industry. This extensive review of existing literature conducts a thorough examination of the most recent deep learning (DL) approaches designed to address the difficulties faced in medical healthcare, particularly focusing on the use of deep learning algorithms in medical image analysis. Falling all the investigated papers into five different categories in terms of their techniques, we have assessed them according to some critical parameters. Through a systematic categorization of state-of-the-art DL techniques, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) models, and hybrid models, this study explores their underlying principles, advantages, limitations, methodologies, simulation environments, and datasets. Based on our results, Python was the most frequent programming language used for implementing the proposed methods in the investigated papers. Notably, the majority of the scrutinized papers were published in 2021, underscoring the contemporaneous nature of the research. Moreover, this review accentuates the forefront advancements in DL techniques and their practical applications within the realm of medical image analysis, while simultaneously addressing the challenges that hinder the widespread implementation of DL in image analysis within the medical healthcare domains. These discerned insights serve as compelling impetuses for future studies aimed at the progressive advancement of image analysis in medical healthcare research. The evaluation metrics employed across the reviewed articles encompass a broad spectrum of features, encompassing accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F-score, robustness, computational complexity, and generalizability.

Abstract:Data-driven medical big data analysis methods have arisen as the times have demanded, assisting in the intelligent identification of medical health. With the widespread use of computer technology, medical health data has also expanded considerably. It is still challenging to evaluate medical big data, nevertheless because of the heterogeneous format of the data, the large number of missing records and the amount of noise. While deep learning constructs a hierarchical model by imitating the human brain, traditional machine learning techniques are unable to efficiently harvest the rich information included in medical big data. It boasts strong automated feature extraction, intricate model building and effective feature expression among other significant features. It is a deep learning technique that takes features from the original medical imaging data at every level, starting at the lowest. For the purpose of intelligent illness identification and diagnosis, this research builds a deep learning-based data analysis model for medical pictures and transcripts. The model chooses and optimises model parameters using a vast amount of medical big data. It also automatically picks up on the pathological analysis process used by doctors or medical researchers. Finally, the model conducts disease judgement and effective decision-making based on the analysis findings of the medical big data. The outcome of the trial demonstrate that the approach can evaluate large amounts of medical data and achieve early illness detection. In addition, it may evaluate the patient's physical health state based on their physical examination data and forecast their future risk of contracting a certain disease. Greatly lower the workload for physicians or researchers in the medical field and increase the effectiveness of their effort.

Abstract:The use of deep learning (DL) for the analysis and diagnosis of biomedical and health care problems has received unprecedented attention in the last decade. The technique has recorded a number of achievements for unearthing meaningful features and accomplishing tasks that were hitherto difficult to solve by other methods and human experts. Currently, biological and medical devices, treatment, and applications are capable of generating large volumes of data in the form of images, sounds, text, graphs, and signals creating the concept of big data. The innovation of DL is a developing trend in the wake of big data for data representation and analysis. DL is a type of machine learning algorithm that has deeper (or more) hidden layers of similar function cascaded into the network and has the capability to make meaning from medical big data. Current transformation drivers to achieve personalized health care delivery will be possible with the use of mobile health (mHealth). DL can provide the analysis for the deluge of data generated from mHealth apps. This paper reviews the fundamentals of DL methods and presents a general view of the trends in DL by capturing literature from PubMed and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers database publications that implement different variants of DL. We highlight the implementation of DL in health care, which we categorize into biological system, electronic health record, medical image, and physiological signals. In addition, we discuss some inherent challenges of DL affecting biomedical and health domain, as well as prospective research directions that focus on improving health management by promoting the application of physiological signals and modern internet technology.

Abstract:Medical social media analytics becomes more and more popular nowadays because of its effectiveness in benefiting diverse health-care applications. In this study, the essential disease prediction task is investigated and realized via medical social media analytics techniques. To be specific, arterial spin labeling (ASL), an emerging functional magnetic resonance imaging modality, is utilized to provide image-based information and novel ranking as well as learning techniques are proposed and incorporated to fulfill the disease prediction task in dementia. To demonstrate its superiority, comprehensive statistical experiments are conducted with comparison to several conventional methods. Promising results are reported from this study.

Abstract:Deep learning (DL) along with never-ending advancements in computational processing and cloud technologies have bestowed us powerful analyzing tools and techniques in the past decade and enabled us to use and apply them in various fields of study. Health informatics is not an exception, and conversely, is the discipline that generates the most amount of data in today's era and can benefit from DL the most. Extracting features and finding complex patterns from a huge amount of raw data and transforming them into knowledge is a challenging task. Besides, various DL architectures have been proposed by researchers throughout the years to tackle different problems. In this paper, we provide a review of DL models and their broad application in bioinformatics and healthcare categorized by their architecture. In addition, we also go over some of the key challenges that still exist and can show up while conducting DL research.

Abstract:Deep learning describes a class of machine learning algorithms that are capable of combining raw inputs into layers of intermediate features. These algorithms have recently shown impressive results across a variety of domains. Biology and medicine are data-rich disciplines, but the data are complex and often ill-understood. Hence, deep learning techniques may be particularly well suited to solve problems of these fields. We examine applications of deep learning to a variety of biomedical problems-patient classification, fundamental biological processes and treatment of patients-and discuss whether deep learning will be able to transform these tasks or if the biomedical sphere poses unique challenges. Following from an extensive literature review, we find that deep learning has yet to revolutionize biomedicine or definitively resolve any of the most pressing challenges in the field, but promising advances have been made on the prior state of the art. Even though improvements over previous baselines have been modest in general, the recent progress indicates that deep learning methods will provide valuable means for speeding up or aiding human investigation. Though progress has been made linking a specific neural network's prediction to input features, understanding how users should interpret these models to make testable hypotheses about the system under study remains an open challenge. Furthermore, the limited amount of labelled data for training presents problems in some domains, as do legal and privacy constraints on work with sensitive health records. Nonetheless, we foresee deep learning enabling changes at both bench and bedside with the potential to transform several areas of biology and medicine.

Abstract:The explosion of digital healthcare data has led to a surge of data-driven medical research based on machine learning. In recent years, as a powerful technique for big data, deep learning has gained a central position in machine learning circles for its great advantages in feature representation and pattern recognition. This article presents a comprehensive overview of studies that employ deep learning methods to deal with clinical data. Firstly, based on the analysis of the characteristics of clinical data, various types of clinical data (e.g., medical images, clinical notes, lab results, vital signs, and demographic informatics) are discussed and details provided of some public clinical datasets. Secondly, a brief review of common deep learning models and their characteristics is conducted. Then, considering the wide range of clinical research and the diversity of data types, several deep learning applications for clinical data are illustrated: auxiliary diagnosis, prognosis, early warning, and other tasks. Although there are challenges involved in applying deep learning techniques to clinical data, it is still worthwhile to look forward to a promising future for deep learning applications in clinical big data in the direction of precision medicine.

Abstract:This review investigates how Deep Machine Learning (DML) has dealt with the Covid-19 epidemic and provides recommendations for future Covid-19 research. Despite the fact that vaccines for this epidemic have been developed, DL methods have proven to be a valuable asset in radiologists' arsenals for the automated assessment of Covid-19. This detailed review debates the techniques and applications developed for Covid-19 findings using DL systems. It also provides insights into notable datasets used to train neural networks, data partitioning, and various performance measurement metrics. The PRISMA taxonomy has been formed based on pretrained(45 systems) and hybrid/custom(17 systems) models with radiography modalities. A total of 62 systems with respect to X-ray(32), CT(19), ultrasound(7), ECG(2), and genome sequence(2) based modalities as taxonomy are selected from the studied articles. We originate by valuing the present phase of DL and conclude with significant limitations. The restrictions contain incomprehensibility, simplification measures, learning from incomplete labeled data, and data secrecy. Moreover, DML can be utilized to detect and classify Covid-19 from other COPD illnesses. The proposed literature review has found many DL-based systems to fight against Covid19. We expect this article will assist in speeding up the procedure of DL for Covid-19 researchers, including medical, radiology technicians, and data engineers.

Abstract:Deep learning has received extensive research interest in developing new medical image processing algorithms, and deep learning based models have been remarkably successful in a variety of medical imaging tasks to support disease detection and diagnosis. Despite the success, the further improvement of deep learning models in medical image analysis is majorly bottlenecked by the lack of large-sized and well-annotated datasets. In the past five years, many studies have focused on addressing this challenge. In this paper, we reviewed and summarized these recent studies to provide a comprehensive overview of applying deep learning methods in various medical image analysis tasks. Especially, we emphasize the latest progress and contributions of state-of-the-art unsupervised and semi-supervised deep learning in medical image analysis, which are summarized based on different application scenarios, including classification, segmentation, detection, and image registration. We also discuss the major technical challenges and suggest the possible solutions in future research efforts.

Traditionally, the machine learning methods are used to dig out biomedical data to find the features from data, which generally rely on feature engineering and domain knowledge of experts, requiring tremendous time and human resources. Different from traditional approaches, deep learning, as a cutting-edge machine learning branch, can automatically learn complex and robust feature from raw data without the need for feature engineering. The applications of deep learning in medical image, electronic health record, genomics, and drug development are studied, where the suggestion is that deep learning has obvious advantage in making full use of biomedical data and improving medical health level. Deep learning plays an increasingly important role in the field of medical health and has a broad prospect of application. However, the problems and challenges of deep learning in computational medical health still exist, including insufficient data, interpretability, data privacy, and heterogeneity. Analysis and discussion on these problems provide a reference to improve the application of deep learning in medical health.

Abstract:This review covers computer-assisted analysis of images in the field of medical imaging. Recent advances in machine learning, especially with regard to deep learning, are helping to identify, classify, and quantify patterns in medical images. At the core of these advances is the ability to exploit hierarchical feature representations learned solely from data, instead of features designed by hand according to domain-specific knowledge. Deep learning is rapidly becoming the state of the art, leading to enhanced performance in various medical applications. We introduce the fundamentals of deep learning methods and review their successes in image registration, detection of anatomical and cellular structures, tissue segmentation, computer-aided disease diagnosis and prognosis, and so on. We conclude by discussing research issues and suggesting future directions for further improvement.

Deep learning techniques for Alzheimer's disease detection in 3D imaging: A systematic review

Abstract:Background and aims: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative neurological condition that worsens over time and leads to deterioration in cognitive abilities, reduced memory, and, eventually, a decrease in overall functioning. Timely and correct identification of Alzheimer's is essential for effective treatment. The systematic study specifically examines the application of deep learning (DL) algorithms in identifying AD using three-dimensional (3D) imaging methods. The main goal is to evaluate these methods' current state, efficiency, and potential enhancements, offering valuable insights into how DL could improve AD's rapid and precise diagnosis. Methods: We searched different online repositories, such as IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, MDPI, PubMed Central, Science Direct, ACM, Springer, and others, to thoroughly summarize current research on DL methods to diagnose AD by analyzing 3D imaging data published between 2020 and 2024. We use PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to ensure the organization and understandability of the information collection process. We thoroughly analyzed the literature to determine the primary techniques used in these investigations and their findings. Results and conclusion: The ability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and their variations, including 3D CNNs and recurrent neural networks, to detect both temporal and spatial characteristics in volumetric data has led to their widespread use. Methods such as transfer learning, combining multimodal data, and using attention procedures have improved models' precision and reliability. We selected 87 articles for evaluation. Out of these, 31 papers included various concepts, explanations, and elucidations of models and theories, while the other 56 papers primarily concentrated on issues related to practical implementation. This article introduces popular imaging types, 3D imaging for Alzheimer's detection, discusses the benefits and restrictions of the DL-based approach to AD assessment, and gives a view toward future developments resulting from critical evaluation.
