Abstract:A significant bottleneck that hampers the adoption of many current technologies and wearable devices is power supply requirements. The quest to innovate portable self-powered systems has shed light on miniaturized energy harvesting devices called nanogenerators (NGs) that apply a wide variety of nanomaterials to achieve feasibility, flexibility, and enhanced electrical output. This systematic review provides a nearly complete list of all the NG devices present in the literature that have used carbon nanomaterials and harnessed renewable energy sources, namely mechanical, thermal, and fluid/blue energies, which were separately discussed and only deliberated to a certain limit with little demonstration of the materials and devices in previous publications. This review also draws attention to the overall aspects of carbon nanomaterial-based NGs, particularly in terms of electrical performance, and the role of carbon nanomaterials in how they have contributed to the advancement and application of energy harvesting devices, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, reduced graphene oxide, activated carbon, and graphitic carbon. Finally, the concluding section addresses the current challenges and provides an outlook on the potential future trends in energy harvesting.

Abstract:Energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations, thermal gradients, electromagnetic radiations, and solar radiations has experienced rapid progress in recent times not only to develop an alternative power source that can replace conventional batteries to energize portable and personal electronics smartly but also to achieve sustainable self‐sufficient micro/nanosystems. Utilizing micro‐electromechanical system (MEMS) and microfluidics technologies through selective designs and fabrications effectively, those energy harvesters can be considerably downsized while ensuring a stable, portable, and consistent power supply. Although ambient energy sources such as solar radiation are harvested for decades, recent developments have enabled ambient vibrations, electromagnetic radiation, and heat to be harvested wirelessly, independently, and sustainably. Developments in the field of microfluidics have also led to the design and fabrication of novel energy harvesting devices. This paper reviews the recent advancements in energy harvesting technologies such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, thermoelectric, radio frequency, and solar to drive self‐powered portable electronics. Moreover, the potential application of MEMS and microfluidics as well as MEMS‐based structures and fabrication techniques for energy harvesting are summarized and presented. Finally, a few crucial challenges affecting the performance of energy harvesters are addressed. This review covers energy harvesting technologies such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, thermoelectric, radio frequency, and solar to drive self‐powered portable electronics, reviewing their recent analytical performances and highlighting critical shortcomings yet to be resolved. In‐depth insights into future development of micro‐electromechanical system and microfluidics technologies are provided for a paradigm shift in the field of energy harvesting in the next decade.

Abstract:Seeking renewable and clean energies is essential for releasing the heavy reliance on mineral-based energy and remedying the threat of global warming to our environment. In the last decade, explosive growth in research and development efforts devoted to microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and nanowires-related nanotechnology have paved a great foundation for new mechanisms of harvesting mechanical energy at the micro/nano-meter scale. MEMS-based inertial sensors have been the enabler for numerous applications associated with smart phones, tablets, and mobile electronics. This is a valuable reference for all those faced with the challenging problems created by the ever-increasing interest in MEMS and nanotechnology-based energy harvesters and their applications. This book presents fundamental physics, theoretical design, and method of modeling for four mainstream energy harvesting mechanisms - piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, and triboelectric. Readers are provided with a comprehensive technical review and historical view of each mechanism. The authors also present current challenges in energy harvesting technology, technical reviews, design requirements, case studies, along with unique and representative examples of energy harvester applications.

Abstract:The energy conversion and storage efficiency was commonly ignored in experimental studies on nanoscale flexible piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs). In this study, we develop a generalized theoretical method to optimize the energy conversion and storage efficiencies of nanoscale flexible PEHs. The results are validated by comparisons with experimental measurements for various ambient excitations. A simple scaling law is established to reveal the intrinsic correlation between the efficiency of energy conversion/storage and various system parameters of the PEHs. For either the energy conversion or storage circuit, the output power density may be maximized by properly designing an intrinsic normalized parameter. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an independent optimization criterion is indispensable for standard storage circuits since including a storage module into the conversion circuit redefines the electromechanical behavior of the PEH system. The results may be used as guidelines for optimizing the energy conversion and storage efficiencies of nanoscale flexible PEHs that have promising applications in harvesting biomechanical energies.

Abstract:Various types of energy exist everywhere around us, and these energies can be harvested from multiple sources to power micro-/nanoelectronic system and even personal electronic products. In this work, we proposed a hybrid energy-harvesting system (HEHS) for potential in vivo applications. The HEHS consisted of a triboelectric nanogenerator and a glucose fuel cell for simultaneously harvesting biomechanical energy and biochemical energy in simulated body fluid. These two energy-harvesting units can work individually as a single power source or work simultaneously as an integrated system. This design strengthened the flexibility of harvesting multiple energies and enhanced corresponding electric output. Compared with any individual device, the integrated HEHS outputs a superimposed current and has a faster charging rate. Using the harvested energy, HEHS can power a calculator or a green light-emitting diode pattern. Considering the widely existed biomechanical energy and glucose molecules in the body, the developed HEHS can be a promising candidate for building in vivo self-powered healthcare monitoring system.

Abstract:The rapid development of advanced manufacturing technologies in micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) fields has promoted the advance in wearable electronics. Among them, wearable biomechanical micro-energy harvesters have attracted much attention in recent years to meet the unique power supply demands of wearable electronics serving as sustainable power sources. In the meanwhile, they also have been successfully demonstrated to be either self-powered sensors or other functional devices for wearable electronic applications. Herein, we overview the state-of-the-art of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for wearable electronic applications, including the summary of working principles and structural configurations of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters. In detail, three promising technologies for biomechanical micro-energy harvesting are studied, i.e. electromagnetic effect, piezoelectric effect, and electrostatic effect. As for the structural configurations, two essential factors to affect the properties of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters are emphasized, i.e. new materials, and advanced manufacturing technologies. For wearable application scenarios, fiber/fabric-based materials and biodegradable/ecofriendly materials are investigated. For advanced manufacturing technologies, micro/nano fabrication technologies for precise fabrication and large-scale fabrication technologies for mass fabrication are summarized. Moreover, we review the wearable electronic applications of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for powering, sensing, and actuating, respectively, which reveals the feasibility of constructing the smart wearable microsystems based on the abundant function of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters. Finally, we conclude the review and discussed the future development trends of biomechanical micro-energy harvesters for wearable electronic applications.

Abstract:Bioengineering devices and systems will become a practical and versatile technology in society when sustainability issues, primarily pertaining to their efficiency, sustainability, and human-machine interaction, are fully addressed. It has become evident that technological paths should not rely on a single operation mechanism but instead on holistic methodologies that integrate different phenomena and approaches with complementary advantages. As an intriguing invention, the ferroelectret nanogenerator (FENG) has emerged with promising potential in various fields of bioengineering. Utilizing the changes in the engineered macro-scale electric dipoles to create displacement current (and vice versa), FENGs have been demonstrated to be a compelling strategy for bidirectional conversion of energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in integrating FENGs in bioengineering systems, focusing on the applications with the most potential and the underlying current constraints.

Abstract:Abstract Wearable biomechanical energy harvesting devices have received a lot of attention recently, benefiting from the rapid advancement of theories and devices in the field of the micro electromechanical system (MEMS). They not only fulfil the requirements for powering wearable electronic devices but also provide an attractive prospect for powering self-powered flexible electronic devices when wearing. In this article, we provide a review of the theories and devices of biomechanical energy harvesting technology for wearable applications. Three different forms of biomechanical energy harvesting mechanisms, including the piezoelectric effect, electromagnetic effect, and electrostatic effect, are investigated in detail. The fundamental principle of converting other types of energy from the biomechanical environment into electrical energy, as well as the most commonly-used analytical theoretical models, are outlined for each process. Therefore, the features, properties, and applications of energy harvesting devices are summarized. In addition, the coupled multi-effect hybrid energy harvesting devices are listed, showing the various possibilities of biomechanical energy harvesting devices for serving as sources, sensors, and actuators. Finally, we present perspectives on the future trends of biomechanical energy harvesting devices for wearable electronics applications.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed significant advances in energy harvesting technology for the realization of self-charging electronics and self-powered wireless sensor nodes (WSNs). To conquer the energy-insufficiency issue of a single energy harvester, hybrid energy harvesting systems have been proposed in recent years. Hybrid harvesting includes not only scavenging energy from multiple sources, but also converting energy into electricity by multiple types of transduction mechanisms. A reasonable hybridization of multiple energy conversion mechanisms not only improves the space utilization efficiency but can also boost the power output significantly. Given the continuously growing trend of hybrid energy harvesting technology, herein we present a comprehensive review of recent progress and representative works, especially focusing on vibrational and thermal energy harvesters which play the dominant role in hybrid energy harvesting. The working principles and typical configurations for piezoelectric, electromagnetic, triboelectric, thermoelectric and pyroelectric transduction effects are briefly introduced. On this basis, a variety of hybrid energy harvesting systems, including mechanisms, configurations, output performance and advantages, are elaborated. Comparisons and perspectives on the effectiveness of hybrid vibrational and thermal harvesters are provided. A variety of potential application prospects of the hybrid systems are discussed, including infrastructure health monitoring, industry condition monitoring, smart transportation, human healthcare monitoring, marine monitoring systems, and aerospace engineering, towards the future Internet-of-Things (IoT) era.

Abstract:Nanoenergy is a field of studying the small-scale, highly efficient energy harvesting, storage, and applications by using nanomaterials and nanodevices. Nanogenerators are developed to harvest these small-scale energies in the ambient environment, which were first invented in our group in 2006. In the past decade, we have developed nanogenerators based on piezoelectric and triboelectric effects for mechanical energy harvesting, and those based on pyroelectric and thermoelectric effects for thermal energy harvesting. We also explored other novel nanogenerators such as that based on ion streams. The proposed nanogenerators will facilitate the development of self-powered systems, which enables efficient energy utilization and sustainable operations of mobile devices for “smart” wearable technology, health monitoring, biomedical sensing, environmental protection, and even security.

Abstract:<p>Knowledge learned from nature demonstrates that system performance can be enhanced and optimized by hierarchical structural design which has dramatically expanded implications for synthetic materials, from design to implementation. In recent years, numerous bioinspired and biomimetic strategies are devoted to design energy storage and harvesting devices. For these devices, efficient and stable electrode/electrolyte interfaces, modified interactions, and new functions are desired, which remain a challenge to fully meet the requirement of the rapidly developed electronic industry. This review, taking lithium batteries, nanogenerators and solar cells as examples, provides a summary and discussion of how the bio-inspired strategies can influence the electrode/device design and the corresponding interface interactions. By applying and learning from biological materials, natural hierarchical structure, surface topography, and biochemical process, enhanced performance and stability for energy devices can be achieved. Future research expectations in this field and energy management are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:In recent years, wearable sensor devices with exceptional portability and the ability to continuously monitor physiological signals in real time have played increasingly prominent roles in the fields of disease diagnosis and health management. This transformation has been largely facilitated by materials science and micro/nano-processing technologies. However, as this technology continues to evolve, the demand for multifunctionality and flexibility in wearable devices has become increasingly urgent, thereby highlighting the problem of stable and sustainable miniaturized power supplies. Here, we comprehensively review the current mainstream energy technologies for powering wearable sensors, including batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, biofuel cells, thermoelectric generators, radio frequency energy harvesters, and kinetic energy harvesters, as well as hybrid power systems that integrate multiple energy conversion modes. In addition, we consider the energy conversion mechanisms, fundamental characteristics, and typical application cases of these energy sources across various fields. In particular, we focus on the crucial roles of different materials, such as nanomaterials and nano-processing techniques, for enhancing the performance of devices. Finally, the challenges that affect power supplies for wearable electronic products and their future developmental trends are discussed in order to provide valuable references and insights for researchers in related fields.

Abstract:As the world's demand for alternative energy increases, the development of green energy harvesters becomes ever more important. As a result, the creation of triboelectric (TENG), piezoelectric (PENG), and pyroelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators (EMG), solar cells, and electrochemical cells is attracting interest in an effort to convert mechanical, thermal, magnetic, solar, and chemical energy into electricity. In order to take advantage of the ambient energies from our surrounding environment, the design of hybridized generator units that can simultaneously scavenge energy in a variety of forms continues to develop. These systems are being considered to satisfy the energy needs of a range of electronic devices and adapt to a variety of working environments. This review demonstrates the latest progress in hybridized nanogenerators in accordance with their structure, operating principle, and applications. These studies demonstrate new approaches to developing hybrid techniques and novel assemblies for efficiently harvesting environmental energy from a number of sources.

Abstract:As a new type of energy harvesting technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can convert distributed energy into electrical energy. It is widely used in various fields such as wearable devices, biomedical devices, Internet of Things (IoT), natural environment, etc. However, there are still some issues that need to be solved for the commercial implementation of TENGs. This review focuses on four major kinds of applications for TENG as the platform of harvesting micro-nano energy: in vivo, in vitro, living environment and wild environment. The challenges and feasible techniques facing TENGs are summarized in three aspects, including low energy output, immature manufacturing technology and unreliable service life. We also review the recent progress in the strategies for improving the output performance and robustness of TENGs, including but not limited to material optimization, device engineering and power management. The aim is to establish a feasible framework of TENGs from laboratory to engineering application. Finally, the future trend of TENGs' application in distributed sensors and biomedical devices has prospected as a promising micro-nano energy for guiding the next innovation researches.
