Abstract:In recent decades, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in the field of materials modeling has received significant attention owing to their excellent ability to analyze a vast amount of data and reveal correlations between several complex interrelated phenomena. In this review paper, we summarize recent advances in the applications of AI techniques for numerical modeling of different types of materials. AI techniques such as machine learning and deep learning show great advantages and potential for predicting important mechanical properties of materials and reveal how changes in certain principal parameters affect the overall behavior of engineering materials. Furthermore, in this review, we show that the application of AI techniques can significantly help to improve the design and optimize the properties of future advanced engineering materials. Finally, a perspective on the challenges and prospects of the applications of AI techniques for material modeling is presented.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining strength, and materials science can both contribute to and profit from it. In a simultaneous progress race, new materials, systems, and processes can be devised and optimized thanks to machine learning (ML) techniques, and such progress can be turned into innovative computing platforms. Future materials scientists will profit from understanding how ML can boost the conception of advanced materials. This review covers aspects of computation from the fundamentals to directions taken and repercussions produced by computation to account for the origins, procedures, and applications of AI. ML and its methods are reviewed to provide basic knowledge of its implementation and its potential. The materials and systems used to implement AI with electric charges are finding serious competition from other information-carrying and processing agents. The impact these techniques have on the inception of new advanced materials is so deep that a new paradigm is developing where implicit knowledge is being mined to conceive materials and systems for functions instead of finding applications to found materials. How far this trend can be carried is hard to fathom, as exemplified by the power to discover unheard of materials or physical laws buried in data.

Abstract:The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in material science and engineering (MSE) is becoming increasingly important as AI technology advances. The development of high‐performance computing has made it possible to test deep learning (DL) models with significant parameters, providing an opportunity to overcome the limitation of traditional computational methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), in predicting the materials' behavior. Machine learning (ML) based methods have shown to be faster and more accurate than DFT‐based methods. Furthermore, the advancement of generative methods, such as generative adversarial networks (GANs), has facilitated the generation of chemical compositions of inorganic materials without the use of crystal structure information. All of these developments in the use of AI in material engineering have significantly impacted material engineering and research. We reviewed some of the latest developments in AI in material engineering in this article. First, we discussed the development of AI in the critical areas of material engineering, such as in material processing, the study of structure and material property, and measuring the performance of materials in various aspects. Then we discussed the significant methods of AI and their uses in MSE, such as graph neural network, generative models, transfer of learning, etc. We also discussed the use of AI to analyze the results from existing analytical instruments. Abstract:Additive manufacturing(AM) has been increasingly used in production. Because of its rapid growth, the efficiency and robustness of AM-based product development processes should be improved. Artificial intelligence(AI) is a powerful tool that has outperformed humans in numerous complex tasks. AI-enabled intelligent agents can reduce the workforce required to scale up AM production and achieve higher resource utilization efficiency. This study provides an introduction of AI techniques. Then,the current development of AI-enabled AM product development is investigated. Existing intelligent agents are used for problems in product design, process design and production stages. Based on the review, current research gaps and future research directions are identified. To guide future development of more efficient and comprehensive intelligent agents, a smart AM framework based on cloud-edge computing is proposed. Global consideration can be realized in the cloud environment, and a fast response can be achieved at the edge nodes.

Abstract:In this perspective, the implications of adopting increasingly advanced AI technologies in materials science are discussed. It is considered how to best utilize AI technologies, identify the necessary new skills, and examine the impact they may have on traditional research methodologies. Central to the discussion is a conceptual AI ladder that spans from elementary data fitting to general artificial intelligence. Material science has historically evolved in tandem with advancements in technologies for characterization, synthesis, and computation. Another type of technology to add to this mix is machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). Now increasingly sophisticated AI‐models are seen that can solve progressively harder problems across a variety of fields. From a material science perspective, it is indisputable that machine learning and artificial intelligence offer a potent toolkit with the potential to substantially accelerate research efforts in areas such as the development and discovery of new functional materials. Less clear is how to best harness this development, what new skill sets will be required, and how it may affect established research practices. In this paper, those question are explored with respect to increasingly more sophisticated ML/AI‐approaches. To structure the discussion, a conceptual framework of an AI‐ladder is introduced. This AI‐ladder ranges from basic data‐fitting techniques to more advanced functionalities such as semi‐autonomous experimentation, experimental design, knowledge generation, hypothesis formulation, and the orchestration of specialized AI modules as stepping‐stones toward general artificial intelligence. This ladder metaphor provides a hierarchical framework for contemplating the opportunities, challenges, and evolving skill sets required to stay competitive in the age of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:We provide a review of machine learning (ML) tools for material discovery and sophisticated applications of different ML strategies. Although there have been a few published reviews on artificial intelligence (AI) for materials with an emphasis on a single material system or individual methods, this paper focuses on an application-based perspective in AI-enhanced material discovery. It shows how AI strategies are applied through material discovery stages (including characterization, property prediction, synthesis, and theory paradigm discovery). Also, by referring to the ML tutorial, readers can acquire a better understanding of the exact functions of ML methods in each application and how these methods work to realize the targets. We are aiming to enable a better integration of AI methods with the material discovery process. The keys to successful applications of AI in material discovery and challenges to be addressed are also highlighted.

Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in materials design is revolutionizing the field of materials engineering thanks to their power to predict material properties, design de novo materials with enhanced features, and discover new mechanisms beyond intuition. In addition, they can be used to infer complex design principles and identify high-quality candidates more rapidly than trial-and-error experimentation. From this perspective, herein we describe how these tools can enable the acceleration and enrichment of each stage of the discovery cycle of novel materials with optimized properties. We begin by outlining the state-of-the-art AI models in materials design, including machine learning (ML), deep learning, and materials informatics tools. These methodologies enable the extraction of meaningful information from vast amounts of data, enabling researchers to uncover complex correlations and patterns within material properties, structures, and compositions. Next, a comprehensive overview of AI-driven materials design is provided and its potential future prospects are highlighted. By leveraging such AI algorithms, researchers can efficiently search and analyze databases containing a wide range of material properties, enabling the identification of promising candidates for specific applications. This capability has profound implications across various industries, from drug development to energy storage, where materials performance is crucial. Ultimately, AI-based approaches are poised to revolutionize our understanding and design of materials, ushering in a new era of accelerated innovation and advancement.

Abstract:There are two main development trends in the modeling techniques for the manufacturing procedure of foundry material. One is based on numerical simulation, the other is based on artificial intelligence. The numerical simulation method depend on the strict mathematics model and scientific mechanism, therefore, it is difficult to predict the final structure and properties by computers. The artificial intelligence method can learn from the empirical data, summarize regularity, automatically build models, and predict the future as human brain does. Focusing on the complexity of foundry material design and combining advanced research in the field of artificial intelligence, this paper describes the application and development orientation about artificial intelligence technology in foundry material design, expounds the features of various technologies. In particular, the applications of artificial intelligence in some way of foundry material properties predicting are summarized.

Abstract:Research has become increasingly more interdisciplinary over the past few years. Artificial intelligence and its sub-fields have proven valuable for interdisciplinary research applications, especially physical sciences. Recently, machine learning-based mechanisms have been adapted for material science applications, meeting traditional experiments’ challenges in a time and cost-efficient manner. The scientific community focuses on harnessing varying mechanisms to process big data sets extracted from material databases to derive hidden knowledge that can successfully be employed in technical frameworks of material screening, selection, and recommendation. However, a plethora of underlying aspects of the existing material discovery methods needs to be critically assessed to have a precise and collective analysis that can serve as a baseline for various forthcoming material discovery problems. This study presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art benchmark data sets, detailed pre-processing and analysis, appropriate learning model mechanisms, and simulation techniques for material discovery. We believe that such an in-depth analysis of the mentioned aspects provides promising directions to the young interdisciplinary researchers from computing and material science fields. This study will help devise useful modeling in the materials discovery to positively contribute to the material industry, reducing the manual effort involved in the traditional material discovery. Moreover, we also present a detailed analysis of experimental and computation-based artificial intelligence mechanisms suggested by the existing literature.

Abstract:Contemporary materials science has seen an increasing application of various artificial intelligence techniques in an attempt to accelerate the materials discovery process using forward modeling for predictive analysis and inverse modeling for optimization and design. Over the last decade or so, the increasing availability of computational power and large materials datasets has led to a continuous evolution in the complexity of the techniques used to advance the frontier. In this Review, we provide a high-level overview of the evolution of artificial intelligence in contemporary materials science for the task of materials property prediction in forward modeling. Each stage of evolution is accompanied by an outline of some of the commonly used methodologies and applications. We conclude the work by providing potential future ideas for further development of artificial intelligence in materials science to facilitate the discovery, design, and deployment workflow.

Materials science is no exception, especially for computational materials science. In recent years, great achievements have been made in the field of materials science and engineering (MSE). Here, we review the previous paradigms of materials science and some classical MSE models. Then, our data-intensive MSE (DIMSE) model is proposed to reshape future materials innovations. This work will help to address the global challenge for materials discovery in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), and essentially contribute to accelerating future materials continuum.

Here, we review recent work focusing on the generation and application of libraries from both experiment and theoretical tools. The library data enables classical correlative ML and also opens the pathway for exploration of underlying causative physical behaviors. We highlight key advances facilitated by this approach and illustrate how modeling, macroscopic experiments, and imaging can be combined to accelerate the understanding and development of new materials systems. These developments point toward a data-driven future wherein knowledge can be aggregated and synthesized, accelerating the advancement of materials science.</span>

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has been referred to as the "fourth paradigm of science," and as part of a coherent toolbox of data‐driven approaches, machine learning (ML) dramatically accelerates the computational discoveries. As the machinery for ML algorithms matures, significant advances have been made not only by the mainstream AI researchers, but also those work in computational materials science. The number of ML and artificial neural network (ANN) applications in the computational materials science is growing at an astounding rate. This perspective briefly reviews the state‐of‐the‐art progress in some supervised and unsupervised methods with their respective applications. The characteristics of primary ML and ANN algorithms are first described. Then, the most critical applications of AI in computational materials science such as empirical interatomic potential development, ML‐based potential, property predictions, and molecular discoveries using generative adversarial networks (GAN) are comprehensively reviewed. The central ideas underlying these ML applications are discussed, and future directions for integrating ML with computational materials science are given. Abstract:Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are fueling a new paradigm of discoveries in natural sciences. Today, AI has started to advance natural sciences by improving, accelerating, and enabling our understanding of natural phenomena at a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, giving rise to a new area of research known as AI for science (AI4Science). Being an emerging research paradigm, AI4Science is unique in that it is an enormous and highly interdisciplinary area. Thus, a unified and technical treatment of this field is needed yet challenging. This work aims to provide a technically thorough account of a subarea of AI4Science; namely, AI for quantum, atomistic, and continuum systems. These areas aim at understanding the physical world from the subatomic (wavefunctions and electron density), atomic (molecules, proteins, materials, and interactions), to macro (fluids, climate, and subsurface) scales and form an important subarea of AI4Science. A unique advantage of focusing on these areas is that they largely share a common set of challenges, thereby allowing a unified and foundational treatment. A key common challenge is how to capture physics first principles, especially symmetries, in natural systems by deep learning methods. We provide an in-depth yet intuitive account of techniques to achieve equivariance to symmetry transformations. We also discuss other common technical challenges, including explainability, out-of-distribution generalization, knowledge transfer with foundation and large language models, and uncertainty quantification. To facilitate learning and education, we provide categorized lists of resources that we found to be useful. We strive to be thorough and unified and hope this initial effort may trigger more community interests and efforts to further advance AI4Science.

Abstract:Abstract Recently there has been an ever-increasing trend in the use of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) methods by the materials science, condensed matter physics, and chemistry communities. This perspective article identifies key scientific, technical, and social opportunities that the materials community must prioritize to consistently develop and leverage Scientific AI (SciAI) to provide a credible path towards the advancement of current materials-limited technologies. Here we highlight the intersections of these opportunities with a series of proposed paths forward. The opportunities are roughly sorted from scientific/technical ( e.g. development of robust, physically meaningful multiscale material representations) to social ( e.g. promoting an AI-ready workforce). The proposed paths forward range from developing new infrastructure and capabilities to deploying them in industry and academia. We provide a brief introduction to AI in materials science and engineering, followed by detailed discussions of each of the opportunities and paths forward.

Abstract:The application research of artificial intelligence in material support is a key field, which can provide support in accurate prediction, effective supply chain management, intelligent inventory management, optimization routes, and risk assessment. This article first introduces the basic concepts of artificial intelligence and analyzes the application requirements of artificial intelligence in material support. On this basis, it proposes the application concept of artificial intelligence in material support, and elaborates on the various risk factors of using artificial intelligence technology for material support, providing corresponding measures and solutions. Finally, it describes the development direction of the application of artificial intelligence technology in material support.
