Abstract:This article discusses the essential difficulties in developing model-checking techniques for quantum systems that are never present in model checking classical systems. It further reviews some early researches on checking quantum communication protocols as well as a new line of researches pursued by the authors and their collaborators on checking general quantum systems, applicable to both physical systems and quantum programs.

Abstract:Quantum systems are modelled as different mathematical structures, depending on their nature and complexity. This chapter considers one of the simplest (discrete-time) models of quantum systems, namely quantum automata. It introduces a way of describing linear-time (dynamic) properties of quantum systems and presents several algorithms for checking certain linear-time properties of quantum automata, for example, invariants and reachability.

Abstract:Model checking has been successfully applied to verification of computer hardware and software, communication systems and even biological systems. In this paper, we further push the boundary of its applications and show that it can be adapted for applications in quantum physics. More explicitly, we show how quantum statistical and many-body systems can be modeled as quantum Markov chains, and some of their properties that interest physicists can be specified in linear-time temporal logics. Then we present an efficient algorithm to check these properties. A few case studies are given to demonstrate the use of our algorithm to actual quantum physical problems.

Should We Learn Probabilistic Models for Model Checking? A New Approach and An Empirical Study.

Abstract:Many automated system analysis techniques e.g., model checking, model-based testing rely on first obtaining a model of the system under analysis. System modeling is often done manually, which is often considered as a hindrance to adopt model-based system analysis and development techniques. To overcome this problem, researchers have proposed to automatically \"learn\" models based on sample system executions and shown that the learned models can be useful sometimes. There are however many questions to be answered. For instance, how much shall we generalize from the observed samples and how fast would learning converge? Or, would the analysis result based on the learned model be more accurate than the estimation we could have obtained by sampling many system executions within the same amount of time? In this work, we investigate existing algorithms for learning probabilistic models for model checking, propose an evolution-based approach for better controlling the degree of generalization and conduct an empirical study in order to answer the questions. One of our findings is that the effectiveness of learning may sometimes be limited.

Abstract:We define a formal framework for reasoning about linear-time properties of quantum systems in which quantum automata are employed in the modeling of systems and certain (closed) subspaces of state Hilbert spaces are used as the atomic propositions about the behavior of systems. We provide an algorithm for verifying invariants of quantum automata. Then, an automata-based model-checking technique is generalized for the verification of safety properties recognizable by reversible automata and ω--properties recognizable by reversible Büchi automata.

Abstract:Although security of quantum cryptography is provable based on principles of quantum mechanics, it can be compromised by flaws in the design of quantum protocols. So, it is indispensable to develop techniques for verifying and debugging quantum cryptographic systems. Model-checking has proved to be effective in the verification of classical cryptographic protocols, but an essential difficulty arises when it is applied to quantum systems: the state space of a quantum system is always a continuum even when its dimension is finite. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce a novel notion of quantum Markov chain, especially suited for modelling quantum cryptographic protocols, in which quantum effects are encoded as super-operators labelling transitions, leaving the location information (nodes) being classical. Then we define a quantum extension of probabilistic computation tree logic (PCTL) and develop a model-checking algorithm for quantum Markov chains.

Abstract:In this survey paper, we describe a framework for assertion-based verification of quantum circuits by applying model checking techniques for quantum systems developed in our previous work, in which: - Noiseless and noisy quantum circuits are modelled as operator- and super-operator-valued transition systems, respectively, both of which can be further represented by tensor networks. - Quantum assertions are specified by a temporal extension of Birkhoff-von Neumann quantum logic. Their semantics is defined based on the following design decision: they will be used in verification of quantum circuits by simulation on classical computers or human reasoning rather than by quantum physics experiments (e.g. testing through measurements); - Algorithms for reachability analysis and model checking of quantum circuits are developed based on contraction of tensor networks. We observe that many optimisation techniques for computing relational products used in BDD-based model checking algorithms can be generalised for contracting tensor networks of quantum circuits.

Abstract:This chapter is devoted to studying a class of even more complex quantum systems modelled as so-called super-operator-valued Markov chains (SVMCs). This new model is particularly useful in modelling the high-level structure of quantum programs and quantum communication protocols. Several algorithms for checking SVMCs are presented in this chapter.

Abstract:Model checking is a formal verification technique. It takes an exhaustively strategy to check hardware circuits and network protocols against desired properties. Having been developed for more than three decades, model checking is now playing an important role in software engineering for verifying rather complicated software artifacts.This paper surveys the role of model checking in software engineering. In particular, we searched for the related literatures published at reputed conferences, symposiums, workshops, and journals, and took a survey of (1) various model checking techniques that can be adapted to software development and their implementations, and (2) the use of model checking at different stages of a software development life cycle. We observed that model checking is useful for software debugging, constraint solving, and malware detection, and it can help verify different types of software systems, such as object- and aspect-oriented systems, service-oriented applications, web-based applications, and GUI applications including safety- and mission-critical systems.The survey is expected to help human engineers understand the role of model checking in software engineering, and as well decide which model checking technique(s) and/or tool(s) are applicable for developing, analyzing and verifying a practical software system. For researchers, the survey also points out how model checking has been adapted to their research topics on software engineering and its challenges.

Abstract:Being a formal verification method,model checking is used frequently in hardware and software design.Firstey the Kripke structure which is used to describe the behavior of a system and the CTL logic which is used to describe the property of a system were introduced.Then two model checking algorithms were introduced: one is the labeling algorithm,the other is the algorithm based on fixpoint.In the end,the symbolic model checking which can reduce the possibility of memory explosion was introduced.

Abstract:Model checking and testing are two areas with a similar goal: to verify that a system satisfies a property. They start with different hypothesis on the systems and develop many techniques with different notions of approximation, when an exact verification may be computationally too hard. We present some notions of approximation with their logic and statistics backgrounds, which yield several techniques for model checking and testing: Bounded Model Checking, Approximate Model Checking, Approximate Black-Box Checking, Approximate Model-based Testing and Approximate Probabilistic Model Checking. All these methods guarantee some quality and efficiency of the verification.

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental physics subject that studies the phenomena at the atomic and subatomic scales. This chapter introduces the required mathematical tools and presents the postulates mainly through their mathematical formalisms. The physics interpretation of these is only very briefly discussed.

Abstract:Model checking is an automatic formal verification technique for a finite state system. Iterative abstraction refinement has emerged recently as the leading approach to software model checking. We present a methodology for automatically verifying programs against safety specifications based on finite state machine. As the first step, an initial abstract model is automatically extracted from source code using predicate abstraction and theorem proving. In order to reduce time complexities of this process, we partition the set of candidate predicates into subsets, and then construct abstract model independently.
An Algebraic Method to Fidelity-based Model Checking over Quantum Markov Chains

Abstract:Fidelity is one of the most widely used quantities in quantum information that measure the distance of quantum states through a noisy channel. In this paper, we introduce a quantum analogy of computation tree logic (CTL) called QCTL, which concerns fidelity instead of probability in probabilistic CTL, over quantum Markov chains (QMCs). Noisy channels are modelled by super-operators, which are specified by QCTL formulas; the initial quantum states are modelled by density operators, which are left parametric in the given QMC. The problem is to compute the minimumfidelity over all initial states for conservation. We achieve it by a reduction to quantifier elimination in the existential theory of the reals. The method is absolutely exact, so that QCTL formulas are proven to be decidable in exponential time. Finally, we implement the proposed method and demonstrate its effectiveness via a quantum IPv4 protocol.

Abstract:Stochastic model checking is extension and generalization of the theory of model checking,which can verify and analyze system model quantitatively and qualitatively,and has been applied in the areas of verification of randomized distributed algorithms,performance analysis of communication protocols,and even the cross-disciplinary fields such as systems biology.Since the late 1990s,stochastic model checking has received widespread concern in the formal verification filed,and has made great progress.In this paper,we retrospect the origin of stochastic model checking,and discuss the basic principle of stochastic model checking systematically including the PCTL,LTL with probability bounds,PCTL* and CSL model checking algorithm.Then we summarize the main research direction and progress of stochastic model checking in recent years, analyze the verification process and advantages/disadvantages of stochastic model checking deeply, classify and list tools for stochastic model checking.Finally,we introduce the application areas of stochastic model checking and point out its future challenge.

Abstract:Model checking is a common formal verification technique, but it is only applicable to white box systems. In order to allow users without much formal verification expertise to use model checking easily, this paper proposes a modular approach for software modeling and model checking. Efficiency, correctness, and reusability are our main concerns. A hierarchical model is constructed for a system by modules, and it is translated into the specific model checking codes. The M^3C tool is implemented to support our approach, and it is successfully applied to actual industrial cases, as well as to some cases in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the model of quantum Mealy machines and study the equivalence checking and minimisation problems of them. Two efficient algorithms are developed for checking equivalence of two states in the same machine and for checking equivalence of two machines. As an application, they are used in equivalence checking of quantum circuits. Moreover, the minimisation problem is proved to be in PSPACE.

Abstract:The most crucial issue of quantum cryptography protocols is its security. There exists many ways to attack the quantum communication process. In this paper, we present a model checking method for modeling the eavesdropping in quantum information protocols. So when the security properties of a certain protocol are needed to be verified, we can directly use the models which are already built. Here we adopt the probabilistic model checking tool-PRISM to model these attack methods. The verification results show that the detection rate of eavesdropping is approximately close to 1 when enough photons are transmitted.

Abstract:For cryptography protocols, security is its most core issue, and is the same for quantum cryptography protocols. Researchers can adopt many methods to prove that these protocols are secure, but there exists much difficulty. By using the method of formal verification and the technique of model checking, a fully automated probabilistic model checking tool - PRISM can be used to model these protocols and verify the security properties. Such a methodology can not only avoid the computational complexity of the traditional verification methods based on mathematics, but also improve efficiency and accelerate the verification process. The verification results show that the detection rate of eavesdropping is approximately close to 1 when sufficient photons are transmitted. The semi-quantum cryptography protocols is as secure as the full quantum protocols.
Checking Continuous Stochastic Logic against Quantum Continuous-Time Markov Chains

Abstract:Verifying quantum systems has attracted a lot of interest in the last decades. In this paper, we study the quantitative model-checking of quantum continuous-time Markov chains (quantum CTMCs). The branching-time properties of quantum CTMCs are specified by continuous stochastic logic (CSL), which is famous for verifying real-time systems, including classical CTMCs. The core of checking the CSL formulas lies in tackling multiphase until formulas. We develop an algebraic method using proper projection, matrix exponentiation, and definite integration to symbolically calculate the probability measures of path formulas. Thus the decidability of CSL is established. To be efficient, numerical methods are incorporated to guarantee that the time complexity is polynomial in the encoding size of the input model and linear in the size of the input formula. A running example of Apollonian networks is further provided to demonstrate our method.
