Abstract:In this paper, we solve two problems dealing with the homogenization of random media. We show that a random quasiconformal mapping is close to an affine mapping, while a circle packing of a random Delauney triangulation is close to a conformal map, confirming a conjecture of Stephenson. We also show that on a Riemann surface equipped with a conformal metric, a random Delauney triangulation is close to being circle packed.

Abstract:Certain classical results on cluster sets and boundary cluster sets of analytic functions, due to Iversen, Lindelöf, Noshiro, Tsuji, Ohtsuka, Pommerenke, Carmona, Cufi and others, are extended to n-dimensional quasiconformal mappings. Unlike what is usually the case in the context of analytic functions, our considerations are not restricted to mappings of a disk or ball only. It is shown, for instance, that quasiconformal cluster sets and boundary cluster sets, taken at a non-isolated boundary point of an arbitrary domain, coincide. More refined versions are established in the special case where the domain is the open unit ball. These include cluster set considerations of the induced radial boundary extension and results where certain exceptional sets on the boundary are allowed for.

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between an open simply-connected region Omega subset of S-2 and the boundary Y of the hyperbolic convex hull in H-3 of S-2 \ Omega. A counterexample is given to Thurston's conjecture that these spaces are related by a 2-quasiconformal homeomorphism which extends to the identity map on their common boundary, in the case when the homeomorphism is required to respect any group of Mobius transformations which preserves Q. We show that the best possible universal lipschitz constant for the nearest point retraction r : Omega --> Y is 2. We find explicit universal constants 0 < c(2) < c(1), such that no pleating map which bends more than cl in some interval of unit length is an embedding, and such that any pleating map which bends less than c(2) in each interval of unit length is embedded. We show that every K-quasiconformal homeomorphism D-2 --> D-2 is a (K, a(K))-quasi-isometry, where a(K) is an explicitly computed function. The multiplicative constant is best possible and the additive constant a(K) is best possible for some values of K.

Abstract:In this paper we generalize the notion of regular homotopy of immersions of a closed connected n-manifold into R^{2n-1} to locally generic mappings. The main result is that if n=2 then two mappings with singularities are regularly homotopic if and only if they have the same number of cross-cap (or Whitney-umbrella) singularities. As an application, we get a description of the path-components of the space of those immersions of a surface into R^4 whose projections into R^3 are locally generic.

Abstract:In the works of Darboux and Walsh it was remarked that a one to one self mapping of $\rr^3$ which sends convex sets to convex ones is affine. It can be remarked also that a $\calc^2$-diffeomorphism $F:U\to U^{'}$ between two domains in $\cc^n$, $n\ge 2$, which sends pseudoconvex hypersurfaces to pseudoconvex ones is either holomorphic or antiholomorphic. \smallskip In this note we are interested in the self mappings of $\cc^n$ which send convex hypersurfaces to pseudoconvex ones. Their characterization is the following: {\it A $\calc^2$ - diffeomorphism $F:U'\to U$ (where $U', U\subset \cc^n$ are domains) sends convex hypersurfaces to pseudoconvex ones if and only if the inverse map $\Phi\deff F^{-1}$ is weakly pluriharmonic, i.e. it satisfies some nice second order PDE very close to $\d\bar\d \Phi = 0$.} In fact all pluriharmonic $\Phi$-s do satisfy this equation, but there are also other solutions.

Abstract:We study the mappings satisfying the so-called inverse Poletsky inequality. We consider mappings of the domains with quasiextreme distance, domains with locally quasiconformal boundary, and domains regular (in a sense of prime ends) onto the domains with locally quasiconformal boundary, regular domains, or domains that are locally Hölder equivalent to a half ball on their boundary. For these mappings, we prove their Hölder logarithmic continuity in a neighborhood of points of the boundary.

Abstract:Given a quasiconformal mapping $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ with $n\ge2$, we show that (un-)boundedness of the composition operator ${\bf C}_f$ on the spaces $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ depends on the index $\alpha$ and the degeneracy set of the Jacobian $J_f$. We establish sharp results in terms of the index $\alpha$ and the local/global self-similar Minkowski dimension of the degeneracy set of $J_f$. This gives a solution to [Problem 8.4, 3] and also reveals a completely new phenomenon, which is totally different from the known results for Sobolev, BMO, Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces. Consequently, Tukia-Väisälä's quasiconformal extension $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ of an arbitrary quasisymmetric mapping $g:\mathbb R^{n-p}\to \mathbb R^{n-p}$ is shown to preserve $Q_{\alpha} (\mathbb R^n)$ for any $(\alpha,p)\in (0,1)\times[2,n)\cup(0,1/2)\times\{1\}$. Moreover, $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ is shown to be invariant under inversions for all $0<\alpha<1$.

Abstract:The paper proves a result on the convergence of discrete conformal maps to the Riemann mappings for Jordan domains. It is a counterpart of Rodin-Sullivan's theorem on convergence of circle packing mappings to the Riemann mapping in the new setting of discrete conformality. The proof follows the same strategy that Rodin-Sullivan used by establishing a rigidity result for regular hexagonal triangulations of the plane and estimating the quasiconformal constants associated to the discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 2395-2455, April 2024. In this contribution we are interested in the quantitative homogenization properties of linear elliptic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data in polygonal domains with corners. To begin our study of this situation, we consider the setting of an angular sector in two dimensions: Unlike in the whole-space, on such a sector there exist nonsmooth harmonic functions (these depend on the angle of the sector). Here we construct extended homogenization correctors corresponding to these harmonic functions and prove growth estimates for these which are quasi-optimal, namely optimal up to a logarithmic loss. Our construction of the corner correctors relies on a large-scale regularity theory for [math]-harmonic functions in the sector, which we also prove and which, as a by-product, yields a Liouville principle. We also propose a nonstandard 2-scale expansion, which is adapted to the sectoral domain and incorporates the corner correctors. Our final result is a quasi-optimal error estimate for this adapted 2-scale expansion.

Abstract:In the paper, we address the following problem, often encountered in geometric constructions: having defined an orientation preserving diffeomorphism in a number of `patches' on a manifold $\mathcal{M}$, can we extend it to a diffeomorphism of the whole manifold $\mathcal{M}$? We give a positive answer, provided the `patches' are sufficiently regular. Then, we extend the same result to the case of bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms and homeomorphisms.

Abstract:We establish that every $K$-quasiconformal mapping $w$ of the unit ball $\IB$ onto a $C^2$-Jordan domain $\Omega$ is Hölder continuous with constant $\alpha= 2-\frac{n}{p}$, provided that its weak Laplacean $\Delta w$ is in $ L^p(\IB)$ for some $n/2<p<n$. In particular it is Hölder continuous for every $0<\alpha<1$ provided that $\Delta w\in L^n(\IB)$.

Abstract:We study a class of maps, called Pseudo Horizontally Weakly Confor- mal (PHWC), which includes horizontally weakly conformal mappings. We give geometrical conditions ensuring the harmonicity of a (PHWC) map, making it a pseudo harmonic morphism, a generalisation of harmonic morphism, for which we broaden the Baird-Eells Theorem. Finally, considering pseudo horizontally homothetic maps, we extend a theorem of Aprodu, Aprodu and Brinzanescu to pseudo harmonic morphisms, and show that the dual stress-energy of such maps is horizontally covariant constant.

Abstract:M.Gromov extended the concepts of conformal and quasiconformal mapping to the mappings acting between the manifolds of different dimensions. For instance, any entire holomorphic function $ f: \Cn \to {\mathbb C}$ defines a mapping conformal in the sense of Gromov. In this connection Gromov addressed a natural question: which facts of the classical theory apply to these mappings? In particular is it true that {\em If the mapping $ F: \R^{n + 1} \to \R^{n}$ is conformal and bounded, then it is a constant mapping, provided that $ n \geq 2 $}~? We present arguments confirming the validity of such a Liouville-type theorem.
Quasiconformal curves and quasiconformal maps in metric spaces

Abstract:In this paper we study quasiconformal curves which are a special case of quasiregular curves. Namely embeddings $\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ from some domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ to $\mathbb{R}^m$, where $n\leq m$, which belong in a suitable Sobolev class and satisfy a certain distortion inequality for some smooth, closed and non-vanishing $n$-form in $\mathbb{R}^m$. These mappings can be seen as quasiconformal mappings between $\Omega$ and $f(\Omega)$. We prove that a quasiconformal curve always satisfies the analytic definition of quasiconformal mappings and the lower half of the modulus inequality. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for a quasiconformal curve to satisfy the metric definition of quasiconformal mappings. We also show that a quasiconformal map from $\Omega$ to $f(\Omega)\subset \mathbb{R}^m$ is a quasiconformal $\omega$ curve for some form $\omega$ under suitable assumptions. Finally, we show the same is true when we equip the target space $f(\Omega)$ with its intrinsic metric instead of the Euclidean one.

Abstract:Let $\sigma_q : \mathbb{R}^q \to {\bf S}^q \setminus N_q$ be the inverse of the stereographic projection with centre the north pole $N_q$. Let $W_i$ be a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}^{q_i}$, for $i=1,2$. Let $\Phi:W_1 \to W_2$ be a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism. The main result states that the homeomorphism $\sigma_{q_2}\circ \Phi \circ \sigma_{q_1}^{-1}$ is a bi-Lipschitz homeomorphism, extending bi-Lipschitz-ly at $N_{q_1}$ with value $N_{q_2}$ whenever $W_1$ is unbounded. As two straightforward applications in the polynomially bounded o-minimal context over the real numbers, we obtain for free a version at infinity of: 1) Sampaio's tangent cone result; 2) Links preserving re-parametrization of definable bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of Valette.

On a problem of Pavlović involving harmonic quasiconformal mappings

Abstract:We obtain a sharp result on order of certain affine and linear invariant families of harmonic quasiconformal mappings with bounded Schwarzian norm. This problem is motivated by the work of Chuaqui, Hernández and Martín [Math. Ann. 367: 1099--1122, 2017]. Firstly, for $K\ge1$, we construct a harmonic $K$-quasiconformal counterpart of the classical Koebe function and use it to formulate the corresponding conjectures. Then we consider Hardy spaces $H^p$ of harmonic quasiconformal mappings by applying results for quasiconformal mappings obtained by Astala and Koskela [Pure Appl. Math. Q. 7: 19--50, 2011]. In particular, we determine the optimal order of the family of harmonic quasiconformal mappings with bounded Schwarzian norm to belong to a harmonic Hardy space. This partially solves an open problem posed by Pavlović in 2014. Finally, we derive pre-Schwarzian and Schwarzian norm estimates of certain harmonic mappings.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a class of vanishing Carleson measures with conformal invariance and corresponding strongly vanishing symmetric homeomorphisms on the real line and prove that they can be mutually generated under quasiconformal mappings. This is motivated by constructing a nice VMO-Teichmuller space on the real line, which completely removes the obstacle of the usual VMO-Teichmuller space that lacks conformal invariance and is repeatedly encountered in the papers [17,22-24].

Abstract:At a first glance, the problem of illuminating the boundary of a convex body by external light sources and the problem of covering a convex body by its smaller positive homothetic copies appear to be quite different. They are in fact two sides of the same coin and give rise to one of the important longstanding open problems in discrete geometry, namely, the Illumination Conjecture. In this paper, we survey the activity in the areas of discrete geometry, computational geometry and geometric analysis motivated by this conjecture. Special care is taken to include the recent advances that are not covered by the existing surveys. We also include some of our recent results related to these problems and describe two new approaches -- one conventional and the other computer-assisted -- to make progress on the illumination problem. Some open problems and conjectures are also presented.
