Abstract:A driving force for developing green technologies is decarbonizing energy end-use, especially in the transportation sector. H2 production is relevant owing to its use in the chemical industry and in fuel cell vehicles. However, H2 productivity and production cost are issues preventing rapid commercialization. Dark fermentation processes can produce H2 from waste biomass. H2 production can also be combined with waste treatment in integrated systems incorporating microbial electrolysis cells. Major scientific challenges have been identified including substrates, organisms, enzymes, metabolic pathways, processes, and valuable by-products which are examined herein, and research and development efforts are active around the world.
