Abstract:We calculate using loop expansion the effect of fluctuations on the structure function and magnetization of the vortex lattice and compare it with existing MC results. In addition to renormalization of the height of the Bragg peaks of the structure function, there appears a characteristic saddle shape ''halos'' around the peaks. The effect of disorder on magnetization is also calculated. All the infrared divergencies related to soft shear cancel.

Abstract:We report on a study of vortex pinning in nanoscale antidot defect arrays in the context of the London Theory. Using a wire network model, we discretize the array with a fine mesh, thereby providing a detailed treatment of pinning phenomena. The use of a fine grid has enabled us to examine both circular and elongated defects, patterned in the form of a rhombus. The latter display pinning characteristics superior to circular defects constructed with the similar area. We calculate pinning potentials for defects containing zero and single quanta, and we obtain a pinning phase diagram for the second matching field, $H = 2 \Phi_{o}$.

Abstract:We study the penetration of the nonuniform magnetic field, created by a magnetic dipole with out-of-plane magnetization, into a film heterostructure composed of a type-II superconductor layer and a soft-magnet layer. In the framework of the London approach, the energy of the magnetic dipole-vortex interaction is derived and the critical value of the dipole moment for the first appearance of a vortex in the superconducting constituent is found for two cases of the layer ordering, namely when the dipole is located near the superconducting or, respectively, the magnetic constituent.

Abstract:Using three-dimensional (3D) numerical discretization of the Ginzburg- Landau (GL) equations, we investigate the superconducting state of a sphere with a piercing hole in the presence of a magnetic field. In the case of samples with central perforation, in axially applied homogeneous magnetic field, we realized unconventional vortex states of broken symmetry due to complex, 3D competing interactions, which depend on the GL parameter kappa. For certain sizes of the sample, non-hysteretic multi-vortex entry and exit is predicted with the non-existence of some vorticities as stable states. In a tilted magnetic field, we studied the gradual transformation of 3D flux patterns into 1D vortex chains, where vortices align along the perforation, and the evolvement of the multi-vortex entry as well. We analyze the flux-guiding ability of the hole in a tilted field, which leads to fractional flux response in magnetization M(H) curves.

Abstract:Images of flux vortices in superconductors acquired by transmission electron microscopy should allow a quantitative determination of their magnetic structure but so far, only visual comparisons have been made between experimental images and simulations. Here, we make a quantitative comparison between Fresnel images and simulations based on the modified London equation to investigate the magnetic structure of flux vortices in MgB2. This technique gives an absolute, low-field (~30 Oe) measurement of the penetration depth from images of single vortices. We found that these simulations gave a good fit to the experimental images and that if all the other parameters in the fit were known, the penetration depth for individual vortices could be measured with an accuracy of +/- 5 nm. Averaging over 17 vortices gave a penetration depth in the ab plane of 113 +/- 2 at 10.8 K assuming that the entire thickness of the sample was superconducting. The main uncertainty in this measurement was the proportion of the specimen which was superconducting. Allowing for a non-superconducting layer of up to 50 nm thickness on the specimen surfaces gave a penetration depth in the range 100-115 nm, close to values of 90 +/- 2 nm obtained by small-angle neutron scattering and 118-138 nm obtained by radio-frequency measurements. We also discuss the use of the transport of intensity equation which should, in principle, give a model-independent measure of the magnetic structure of flux vortices.

Abstract:Vortex-like inhomogeneities that can appear in ferromagnetic films with strong easy-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the presence of antidotes in the form of artificial nanoscale holes or nonmagnetic inclusions are investigated. Peculiarities of the structure of such type of nanoobjects are considered for various geometries of holes, and the effect of demagnetizing fields on vortex-like inhomogeneities localized near one, two, or four holes is analyzed. It is shown that the analytic estimates obtained here are in all cases in good agreement with the results of numerical simulation.

Abstract:The vortex structure in nanomagnetic thin film is studied by means of the relaxation simulation using classical spin dynamics. The fast Fourier transformation (FFT) method is implemented to accelerate the simulation. It is shown that the vortex-like structures can occur of which the spins (a) in the core of the vortex and (b) near the corners of square sample will turn out-of-plane as the thickness goes beyond some appropriate layers. But the reason is different for these two cases: (a) for very thin films the spin's turning-up is dominated by decreasing the exchange energy, but when the thickness of sample increases, the role of decreasing dipolar energy becomes more important; (b) it is always dominated by lowering the dipolar energy. When the spin vortex configuration appears by tuning external magnetic field, the MR(magnetoresistance) may acquire a sharp increase.

Abstract: The dynamics of moving vortex lattice is considered in the framework of the time dependent Ginzburg - Landau equation neglecting effects of pinning. At high flux velocities the pinning dominated dynamics is expected to cross over into the interactions dominated dynamics for very clean materials recently studied experimentally. The stationary lattice structure and orientation depend on the flux flow velocity. The vortex lattice will have a different orientation for V>V_c. The two orientations can be desribed as motion "in channels" and motion of "lines of vortices perpendicular to the direction of motion. Although we start from the lowest Landau level approximation, corrections to conductivity and the vortex lattice energy dissipation from higher Landau levels are systematically calculated and compared to a recent experiment.
Pinning and creation of vortices in superconducting films by a magnetic dipole

Abstract:Interactions between vortices in planar superconducting films and a point magnetic dipole placed outside the film, and the creation of vortices by the dipole, are studied in the London limit. The exact solution of London equations for films of arbritrary thickness with a generic distribution of vortex lines, curved or straight, is obtained by generalizing the results reported by the author and E.H. Brandt (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 61}, 6370 (2000)) for films without the dipole. From this solution the total energy of the vortex-dipole system is obtained as a functional of the vortex distribution. The vortex configurations created by the dipole minimize the energy functional. It is shown that the vortex-dipole interaction energy is given by $- {\bf m}\cdot {\bf b^{vac}}$, where ${\bf m}$ is the dipole strength and $ {\bf b^{vac}}$ is the magnetic field of the vortices at the dipole position, and that it can also be written in terms of a magnetic pinning potential acting on the vortices. The properties of this potential are studied in detail. Vortex configurations created by the dipole on films of thickness comparable to the penetration depth are obtained by discretizing the exact London theory results on a cubic lattice and minimizing the energy functional using a numerical algorithm based on simulated annealing. These configurations are found to consist, in general, of curved vortex lines and vortex loops.

Abstract:By using a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (Tl-2223) single crystal as an example, the magnetization vector was probed in the reversible region of highly anisotropic cuprate superconductors. For that, we have measured its components along and transverse to the applied magnetic field for different crystal orientations. The analysis shows that the angular dependence of the perpendicular component of the magnetization vector follows the one predicted by a London-like approach which includes a contribution associated with the thermal fluctuations of the 2D vortex positions. For the Tl-2223 crystal studied here, a lower bound for the anisotropy factor was estimated to be about 190.

Activated vortex lattice transition in a superconductor with combined sixfold and twelvefold anisotropic interactions

Abstract:Numerical simulations are used to examine the transition dynamics between metastable and ground state vortex lattice phases in a system with combined sixfold and twelvefold contributions to the vortex-vortex interactions. The system is initially annealed using a twelvefold anisotropy, yielding domains of two different orientations and separated by grain boundaries. The vortex-vortex interaction is then suddenly changed to a sixfold anisotropy, rendering the twelvefold state metastable. Applying a drive that mimics an oscillating magnetic field causes the metastable state to decay, indicated by the structure factor that evolves from twelve to six peaks. The results fit the behavior seen in recent small-angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice in MgB2. At higher drive amplitudes, the decay exhibits a two step process in which the initial fast decrease is followed by a slower regime where avalanches or bursts are correlated with dislocation annihilation events. The results are compared to other types of metastable systems with quenched disorder that decay under a periodic external drive.

Abstract:We study here, by the minimization of the total energy of flux line systems, the zero temperature structure of flux Lines of uniaxial anisotropic superconductors in a tilt magnetic field. The anisotropic London model is used and an efficient method is developed to make the total energy calculation manageable. Two degenerate structures are found, one is a deformed triangular structure and the other is a superlattice with three lines per unit cell.

Abstract:The orbital magnetization of the electron gas on a two-dimensional kagome lattice under a perpendicular magnetic field is theoretically investigated. The interplay between the lattice geometry and magnetic field induce nontrivial $k$-space Chern invariant in the magnetic Brillouin zone, which turns to result in profound effects on the magnetization properties. We show that the Berry-phase term in the magnetization gives a paramagnetic contribution, while the conventional term brought about by the magnetic response of the magnetic Bloch bands produces a diamagnetic contribution. As a result, the superposition of these two components gives rise to a delicate oscillatory structure in the magnetization curve when varying the electron filling factor. The relationship between this oscillatory behavior and the Hofstadter energy spectrum is revealed by selectively discussing the magnetization and its two components at the commensurate fluxes of $f$=1/4, 1/3, and 1/6, respectively. In particular, we reveal as a typical example the fractal structure in the magnetic oscillations by tuning the commensurate flux around $f$=1/4. The finite-temperature effect on the magnetization is also discussed.

Vertices and Vortices in High Tc Superconductors

Abstract:Two different aspects of high T_c superconductivity is studied in two independent parts of this thesis. In the first part we study Landau's Fermi liquid theory and nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid theory (NAFL) in 2D. We that inflection points on the Fermi surface provide 2D singularities which have to be taken seriously in Fermi liquid considerations. We then focus on self-consistency of NAFL in calculations base on Eliashberg formalism. We calculate the first vertex correction for an optimally doped system and show that it is of the same order of magnitude as the bare vertex. Migdal's theorem is therefore not valid and the Eliashberg formalism is not applicable. The same conclusion is obtained even after inclusion of the quasiparticle residue Z to the calculation. In part II of the thesis, we establish a method to study vortex lattice properties of d-wave superconductors based on a generalization of the London model. The method has the advantage of simplicity as well as having very few free parameters (one at most) compared to other methods. The generalized London free energy is obtained from an s-d mixing Ginsburg-Landau free energy and also from the microscopic theory of Gorkov. The generalized London equation is found to be non-analytic at very low temperatures because of the nodes on the superconducting gap. We present the results of our calculations for some measurable quantities, such as the vortex lattice geometry and the effective penetration depth (as defined in muSR experiments) with comparison to experiments.

Nature of the 1/9-magnetization plateau in the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Abstract:The nature of the 1/9-magnetization plateau of the spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet remains controversial due to the exotic physical properties and high complexity induced by the geometrical frustration. Instead of a Z3 quantum spin liquid revealed on a cylinder, we show on an infinite-size lattice that the 1/9 plateau can be described by a valence bond crystal (VBC) that breaks spatial translational invariance. Consistent results are achieved by two accurate tensor network methods, namely the full-update infinite projected-entangled pair states and the projected-entangled simplex states. The VBC exhibits an hourglass pattern with $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ spatial symmetry, demonstrated by magnetizations, bond energies, and three-body correlators. The spatial inversion symmetry in the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ VBC is instantly broken with the presence of the difference between the coupling strengths in the up and down triangles, suggesting the existence of gapless excitations. The gapless nature of the 1/9 plateau is further indicated by the scaling behaviors of the entanglement entropy and the correlation length, which indicate a c=1 conformal field theory.

Abstract:We employ the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs theory to investigate the structure of vortex-antivortex lattices within a superconductor driven by spatial periodic magnetic fields. By adjusting the parameters of the external magnetic field, including the period ( T ) and the amplitude ( B0 ), various distinct vortex states emerge. These states encompass the Wigner crystallization state, the vortex cluster state, and the suppressed state.
