Abstract:Nowadays, wearable electronic devices with rich functions have significantly facilitated individual combat in the military and daily lives of people. To achieve implanting and sustainable wearable electronic systems, it is necessary to develop self-powered sensors utilizing environmental energy harvesting with superior mechanical stretchability and flexibility. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can capture the low-frequency mechanical energy in human motion and convert it into electricity, which is expected to be a potential solution for this urgent need. In this review, based on advanced applications, the rich functions of TENG-based wearable devices are thoroughly discussed, including human body perception and human-machine interaction, personnel identification, as well as generation and recognition of coded information. Then, we elaborate on three crucial strategies for achieving an optimal design of TENGbased wearable devices, including selection and optimization of flexible materials, structural design and optimization, and synergistic information acquisition using multiple sensors. The representative signal processing methods are investigated to exploit the potential information behind the output signals, including basic qualitative waveform features and quantization thresholds, anti-interference processing and joint processing of multiple signals, and implementation of complex functions based on artificial intelligence. The review concludes with an overview of the remaining key challenges and potential technologies that can achieve the ultimate goal of a "fully self-powered wearable microsystem". [The inhibitory effects of siRNA expression vector on the expression of human papillomavirus E6 gene].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the inhibitory effects of RNAi(RNA interference)expression vector on the expression of human papilomavirus E6 gene. METHODS siRNA expression vectors were constructed to be aimed directly at HPV16 E6 gene. The recombinants were transfected into cervical cancer cell line, caski, with liposomes. Expression of E6 was detected with fluorescence quantitative PCR (FQ-PCR) and flow cytometry. RESULTS Three kinds of expression vectors could reduce the expression of E6 mRNA and protein all in caski-B cell. The expression of E6 mRNA reduced to 21.7% of control group, and the protein inhibition ratio reached 98.1%. CONCLUSION The RNAi expression vector can effectively inhibit the expression of HPVE6 gene.

Abstract:Textile-based electronics have attracted increasing interests due to the huge demand for wearable technologies. Working as the energy harvesting devices, textile triboelectric nanogenerators (t-TENGs) have exhibited remarkable superiority in mechanical energy harvesting for the future lightweight, portable, flexible, and green energy supply in wearable system. Here, a brief review will be given focusing on the recent progress of t-TENG, including the evolution of device structure, demonstrations of various self-powered systems, further integration capability with other kinds of energy devices, etc. All of these progresses reveal the power of this mechanical energy harvesting technology as a very appealing part in wearable electronics.
Scalable all-textile embedded electrode triboelectric nanogenerator: Hybrid single-electrode and contact-separation working functions for wearable body motion monitoring

Abstract:Journal of Industrial Textiles, Volume 54, Issue , January-December 2024. Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) hold considerable promise as sustainable power sources for wearable electronics, yet their seamless integration into everyday clothing remains a challenge. This paper introduces a scalable woven TENG structure that utilizes core−shell yarns composed of commercially available wool and polyester with an inner copper electrode. The device achieves notable performance with an output voltage of 18.5 V, a current of 3.7 μA, and a power density of 51 mW/m2. The novel multilayer design combines hybrid single-electrode and contact-separation approaches, significantly enhancing triboelectric performance and the device's durability. The multilayer functionality amplifies energy conversion efficiency by increasing the contact area and optimizing charge accumulation through multiple interacting layers. This advanced textile TENG is comfortable, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing while being compatible with large-scale textile manufacturing processes. It demonstrates excellent washability, durability under diverse weather conditions, and resilience to repeated mechanical loading. Highly responsive to a broad range of forces, from gentle taps to strong impacts, this TENG is versatile for body motion monitoring and wearable applications. It represents a significant advancement in creating practical, efficient, and durable energy-harvesting textiles, with promising applications in garment production for precise motion detection, such as for professional athletes and individuals requiring specialized monitoring.

Abstract:A technique for acquiring two-dimensional soot-volume-fraction measurements in laminar flames has been demonstrated. The technique provides a map of very low noise concentration over a range of wavelengths (250-1100 nm). A noise level of 0.0007 in extinction and a spatial resolution of 30-40 microm for soot concentration were achieved with an arc lamp source that was filtered to provide greater spatial coherence and a CCD detector. The broadband arc lamp source also allowed us to avoid the added noise resulting from speckle with coherent laser sources. Beam steering, due to refractive-index gradients in the flame, was measured and compared with theoretical predictions. The optical arrangement to minimize the effect of beam steering is described. As a result the beam steering had no effect on the soot measurements in the flames examined. Flame-transmission maps obtained with this system in an ethylene/air laminar diffusion flame are presented. Tomographic analysis from use of an Abel inversion of the line-of-sight data to obtain radial profiles of soot concentration is described.

Abstract:In recent years, wearable electronic devices have made considerable progress thanks to the rapid development of the Internet of Things. However, even though some of them have preliminarily achieved miniaturization and wearability, the drawbacks of frequent charging and physical rigidity of conventional lithium batteries, which are currently the most commonly used power source of wearable electronic devices, have become technical bottlenecks that need to be broken through urgently. In order to address the above challenges, the technology based on triboelectric effect, i.e., triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), is proposed to harvest energy from ambient environment and considered as one of the most promising methods to integrate with functional electronic devices to form wearable self-powered microsystems. Benefited from excellent flexibility, high output performance, no materials limitation, and a quantitative relationship between environmental stimulation inputs and corresponding electrical outputs, TENGs present great advantages in wearable energy harvesting, active sensing, and driving actuators. Furthermore, combined with the superiorities of TENGs and fabrics, textile-based TENGs (T-TENGs) possess remarkable breathability and better non-planar surface adaptability, which are more conducive to the integrated wearable electronic devices and attract considerable attention. Herein, for the purpose of advancing the development of wearable electronic devices, this article reviews the recent development in materials for the construction of T-TENGs and methods for the enhancement of electrical output performance. More importantly, this article mainly focuses on the recent representative work, in which T-TENGs-based active sensors, T-TENGs-based self-driven actuators, and T-TENGs-based self-powered microsystems are studied. In addition, this paper summarizes the critical challenges and future opportunities of T-TENG-based wearable integrated microsystems.

Abstract:Textile triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a kind of smart textile technology that integrates traditional flexible and wearable textile materials with emerging and advanced TENG science, which not only embraces the capabilities of autonomous energy harvesting and active self-powered sensing, but also maintains original wearability and desired comfortability. With the help of the burden-free and self-sufficient wearable intelligent system, individuals can achieve convenient acquisition and efficient utilization of electric energy, which will help to promote the future development of human-oriented on-body electronics and artificial intelligence. Here, some fundamental knowledge and core elements, including the operational modes and corresponding service occasions, charge generation and transfer mechanisms, remaining challenges and potential solutions are comprehensively summarized and systematically discussed. Based on these analyses, a roadmap toward the scientific research and large-scale commercial application of textile TENGs in the next decade is highlighted at the end of the article. We believe that textile TENGs will become an indispensable part of daily clothing in the future, thus benefiting all humankind and human civilization.

High-Performance All-Textile Triboelectric Nanogenerator toward Intelligent Sports Sensing and Biomechanical Energy Harvesting.

Abstract:Merging textiles with advanced energy harvesting technology via triboelectric effects brings novel insights into self-powered wearable textile electronics. However, fabrication of a comfortable textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with high outputs remains challenging. Herein, we propose a highly flexible, tailorable, single-electrode all-textile TENG (t-TENG) with both wear comfort and high outputs. A dielectric modulated porous composite coating containing poly(vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene copolymer and barium titanate nanoparticles is constructed on conductive fabric to counterpart with highly positive glass fiber fabric through knotted yarn bonding, maintaining the superiority of textiles and strong triboelectricity. Through the synergistic optimization of charge storage via dielectric modulation and charge dissipation offset by electrical poling, remarkable outputs (261 V, 1.5 μA, and 12.7 nC) are obtained from a miniaturized, lightweight t-TENG (2 × 2 cm2, 130 mg) with an instantaneous power density of 654.48 mW·m-2, as well as excellent electrical robustness and device durability over 20,000 cycles. The t-TENG also exhibits a high sensitivity of 3.438 V·kPa-1 in the force region (1-10 N), demonstrating great potential in TENG-based intelligent sports sensing applications for monitoring and correcting the basketball shooting hand and foot arch posture. Furthermore, over 110 light-emitting diode arrays can be lightened up by gently tapping this miniaturized t-TENG. It also offers a wearable power source scheme through integrating the single-electrode device into clothing and utilizing the skin as the grounded electrode, revealing its ease of integration and biomechanical energy harvesting capability. This work provides an attractive paradigm for next-generation textile electronics with well-balanced device performance and wear comfort.

Abstract:With the rapid development of cutting-edge technologies, self-powered breathable wearable electronic textiles have received significant attention because of portable and convenient power sources. In this work, a biocompatible and antibacterial all-textile structured triboelectric nanogenerator was designed for self-powered tactile sensing, constructed by the MXene doped PVDF (P/M) nanofibers and the antibacterial Ag nanoparticles modified nylon 6,6 ( 6/6) nanofibers as the triboelectric negative and positive materials, respectively. The effect of MXenes in PVDF nanofibers for its mutual interaction, surface potential, breathability, tensile strength, biocompatibility, and triboelectric performance was evaluated thoroughly through experimental and theoretical investigations. As developed P/M nanofiber film was paired with tribopositive 6/6 nanofibers to fabricate the TENG, exhibiting a high output voltage of 362 V and an output current of 38.5 μA. The triboelectric harvesting properties were further demonstrated by capacitor charging and the operation of low power devices such as the clock, 95 commercial LEDs . In addition, a self-powered tactile sensor based on the 6,6 and P/M fibrous membranes realizes ultrasensitive motion and pulse detection from different arteries, and the fabricated tactile sensor array shows a great potential in the application of smart wearable keyboard as well as high-resolution tactile mapping.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Smart wearable technologies are augmenting human bodies beyond our biological capabilities in communication, healthcare and recreation. Energy supply and information acquisition are essential for wearable electronics, whereas the increasing demands in multifunction are raising the requirements for energy and sensor devices. The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), proven to be able to convert various mechanical energies into electricity, can fulfill either of these two functions and therefore has drawn extensive attention and research efforts worldwide. The everyday life of a human body produces considerable mechanical energies and, in the meantime, the human body communicates mainly through mechanical signals, such as sound, body gestures and muscle movements. Therefore, the TENG has been intensively studied to serve as either wearable sources or wearable self-powered sensors. Herein, the recent finding on the fundamental understanding of TENGs is revisited briefly, followed by a summary of recent advancements in TENG-based wearable power sources and self-powered sensors. The challenges and prospects of this area are given as well.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are foreseen as a leading candidate to harvest mechanical energy from ambient sources such as human body movements. However, wearable TENGs, which are used for this purpose, require adequate wearability for long durations, in addition to sufficient electrical outputs. So far, it has been difficult to achieve this through the predominantly plastic-based wearable TENGs constructed using conventional nanogenerator fabrication methods. This Article evaluates the use of textile materials and scalable fabrication techniques to develop TENGs targeting balanced electrical and wearable properties. The fabrication process is conducted using yarn-coating, dip-coating, and screen-printing techniques, which are common textile manufacturing methods, and converted into fabrics using flat-bed knitting, resulting in TENGs with improved wearable and electrical performances. The electrical properties (open circuit voltage (V oc), short circuit current (I sc), and short circuit charge (Q sc)) and wearable properties (air permeability, stretch and recovery, and moisture management) of these structures are evaluated, during which the yarn-coated TENG resulted in maximum electrical outputs recording V oc ≈ 35 V, I sc ≈ 60 nA, and Q sc ≈ 12 nC, under mild excitations. In terms of wearability, the yarn-coated TENG again performed exceptionally during the majority of tests providing the best moisture management, air permeability (101 cm3/cm2/s), and stretch (∼75%), thus proving its suitability for wearable TENG applications.

Abstract:The human body continuously generates ambient mechanical energy through diverse movements, such as walking and cycling, which can be harvested via various renewable energy harvesting mechanisms. Triboelectric Nanogenerator (TENG) stands out as one of the most promising emerging renewable energy harvesting technologies for wearable applications due to its ability to harness various forms of mechanical energies, including vibrations, pressure, and rotations, and convert them into direct current (DC) electricity. However, their application is limited due to challenges in achieving performance, flexibility, low power consumption, and durability. Here, we present a robust and high-performance self-powered system integrated into cotton fabric by incorporating a textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (T-TENG) based on 2D materials, addressing both energy harvesting and storage. The proposed system extracts significant ambient mechanical energy from human body movements and stores it in a textile supercapacitor (T-Supercap). The integration of 2D materials (graphene and MoS2) in fabrication enhances the performance of T-TENG significantly, as demonstrated by a record-high open-circuit voltage of 1068V and a power density of 14.64 W/m2 under a force of 22N. The developed T-TENG in this study effectively powers 200+ LEDs and a miniature watch while also charging the T-Supercap with 4-5N force for efficient miniature electronics operation. Integrated as a step counter within a sock, the T-TENG serves as a self-powered step counter sensor. This work establishes a promising platform for wearable electronic textiles, contributing significantly to the advancement of sustainable and autonomous self-powered wearable technologies.

Abstract:With the improvement in life quality, the increased focus on health has expedited the rapid development of portable preventative-health-monitoring devices. As one of the most attractive sensing technologies, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are playing a more and more important role in wearable electronics, machinery condition monitoring, and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. TENGs possess many advantages, such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, material-selection variety, and the ability to collect low-frequency motion, offering a novel way to achieve health monitoring for human beings in various aspects. In this short review, we initially present the working modes of TENGs based on their applications in health monitoring. Subsequently, the applications of TENG-based preventive health monitoring are demonstrated for different abnormal conditions of human beings, including fall-down detection, respiration monitoring, fatigue monitoring, and arterial pulse monitoring for cardiovascular disease. Finally, the discussion summarizes the current limitations and future perspectives. This short review encapsulates the latest and most influential works on preventive health monitoring utilizing the triboelectric effect for human beings and provides hints and evidence for future research trends.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement in wearable electronics, energy harvesting devices based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been intensively investigated for providing sustainable power supply for them. However, the fabrication of wearable TENGs still remains great challenges, such as flexibility, breathability and washability. Here, a route to develop a new kind of woven-structured triboelectric nanogenerator (WS-TENG) with a facile, low-cost, and scalable electrospinning technique is reported. The WS-TENG is fabricated with commercial stainless-steel yarns wrapped by electrospun polyamide 66 nanofiber and poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) nanofiber, respectively. Triggered by diversified friction materials under a working principle of freestanding mode, the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and maximum instantaneous power density from the WS-TENG can reach up to 166 V, 8.5 µA and 93 mW/m2, respectively. By virtue of high flexibility, desirable breathability, washability and excellent durability, the fabricated WS-TENG is demonstrated to be a reliable power textile to light up 58 light-emitting diodes (LED) connected serially, charge commercial capacitors and drive portable electronics. A smart glove with stitched WS-TENGs is made to detect finger motion in different circumstances. The work presents a new approach for self-powered textiles with potential applications in biomechanical energy harvesting, wearable electronics and human motion monitoring.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of advancements in modern multifunctional wearable electronics, there is a growing demand for simple, sustainable, and portable electronic skin (e-skin), posing significant challenges. This study aims to delineate the development of a straightforward, transparent, highly sensitive, and high power-density electronic skin based on a triboelectric nanogenerator(S-TENG), designed for harvesting human body energy and real-time monitoring of the physiological motion status. Our e-skin incorporates thermally treated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber membranes as the contact layer and a film of silver nanowires as the conductive electrodes. The resulting contact-separation type e-skin exhibits an impressive transparency of 80 %, along with a nice sensitivity value, capable of detecting a light touch from a 0.13 g sponge and demonstrating good working stability and breathability. Leveraging the triboelectric effect, our e-skin generates an open-circuit voltage of 301 V and a short-circuit current of 2.7 μA under an extrinsic force of 8 N over an interaction area of 4 × 4 cm 2 , achieving a power density up to 306 mW/m 2 . With its signal processing circuitry, the integrated S-TENG showcases nice energy harvesting and signal transmission capabilities. Accordingly, we contend that S-TENG has potential applications in energy capture and real-time human motion state monitoring. This research is anticipated to blaze a novel and practical trail for self-powered wearable devices and personalized health rehabilitation training regimens.

Abstract:Nanofiber-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered increasing attention as the multifunctional power source in wearable electronics. However, most traditional wearable device-based TENGs are unable to simultaneously achieve excellent outputs and multifunctional properties. Here, we design a waterproof, breathable, UV-protective TENG based on a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/TiO2 nanofiber film for effective harvesting mechanical energy by a simple and low-cost combined electrospinning/electrospray method. The introduction of PVDF can overcome the synthesis puzzle of PDMS nanofibers during the electrospinning process. With numerous three-dimensional micro-to-nano hierarchical pores of a nanofiber network, the constructed TENG can furnish large specific surface area and good breathability. The addition of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) increases the dielectric constant and surface roughness of the PVDF/PDMS/TiO2 nanofiber film as well as the corresponding output performance of the nanofiber-based TENG. The as-presented TENG has a maximum peak power density of 0.72 W/m2 and excellent breathability (18.6 mm/s). Due to the UV radiation absorbed by the TiO2 NPs, the UVA transmittance (T UVA) of the TENG with 4% TiO2 NPs is decreased to only 8.2%. The constructed TENG can be integrated to monitor human physiological signals in a self-powered manner. The nanofiber-based TENG provides a version to render these suitable for the daily-used wearable or portable electronics shortly.

Abstract:The proliferation of triboelectric nanogenerator based devices and the ever-growing demand for wearable electronics has increased the need for potential functional materials for their fabrication. Among the various class of materials investigated in the recent studies, textile-based materials for wearable TENGs have exhibited superior output performance and wearability. This review examines the recent developments made in the field of T-TENGs with respect to prospective materials and design strategies. A categorisation of T-TENGs based on different constructs and configurations of textile materials in conjunction with the fabrication methods employed have been presented. Moreover, a detailed account on the efficiency of various materials and different approaches employed for improving their output has been discussed. Additionally, the review also performs an in-depth look at the major challenges faced by T-TENGs such as low output, washability and stretchability of different component. The review concludes with the prospects of the T-TENGs by addressing the identified limitations associated with the existing strategies.

Multiple textile triboelectric nanogenerators based on UV-protective, radiative cooling, and antibacterial composite yarns

Abstract:In addition to energy scavenging and self-powered sensing, there is growing interest in expanding the capabilities of textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (T-TENGs). In this study, we present a novel approach to developing T-TENGs with advanced features, such as antibacterial, ultraviolet (UV) protection, and radiative cooling performance. We use core − shell yarns consisting of conductive stainless steel wires (SS) as the electrode and anti-UV cotton yarns with antibacterial properties (UV/OM-CY) combined with polyethylene (PE) yarns that are tightly twined around the core SS fibers as the basic building blocks (PE/UV/OM-CY). The resulting fabric (PE/UV/OM-CF TENG), woven from these composite yarns, not only exhibits remarkable UV-protection capabilities with a UPF value of up to 328, but also demonstrates exceptional personal temperature management performance, with a surface temperature approximately 6.9 °C lower than that of cotton fabrics under intense direct sunlight. Moreover, the PE/UV/OM-CF TENG exhibits remarkable antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, the fabricated PE/UV/OM-CF TENG displays excellent capability as a self-powered movement sensor, which could assist patients in modifying their exercise routines. Our multifunctional and consumer-centric design of T-TENG technology shows great potential for wearable electronics and could advance the development of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:Developing nanoengineered, efficient, self-powered, flexible, and lightweight wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for detecting real-time human movements is challenging. We employ a novel metal-coupled NaYF 4 dielectric matrix prepared in-situ and doped with lanthanide ions (NaYF 4 :Yb,Er@Au nanocomposites , NCs) to minimize triboelectric losses and facilitate charge transfer in Ecoflex (EC). Polyester cloth (PC: tribopositive) and EC + 0.5–2.5 wt% of NC (tribonegative) layers with and without polymer spacers are used to fabricate TENG devices for application in low-power wearable electronics. After incorporating 2wt% NC into the EC layer, the pristine PC/EC-based TENG demonstrates 7.5-fold (56 V to 420 V), 6-fold (1.4 μA to 8.5 μA), and 3.8-fold (18.2 nC to 70 nC) enhancements in open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and charge accumulation, respectively, under 5 N and 5 Hz. COMSOL simulations support the generation of potential distributions. The device without Au nanoparticles exhibits poor performance (179 V, 5.4 μA). The PC/EC + 2wt% NC TENG produces a power density of 3.7 Wm −2 and powers a stopwatch and 100 light-emitting diodes. Finally, a spacer-free flexible, wearable triboelectric sensor is fabricated, which detects human activities and yields a stable and reproducible 6 V output. This performance is the highest to date achieved using this material class, demonstrating the potential for developing consumer wearable electronics.
