Abstract:English for Specific Purposes(ESP) is a teaching strategy which aims to meet the specific communicative needs of language learners.From the perspective of linguistic analysis,ESP focuses on language use in specialist discourse communities to which prospective language users belong.The genre-analytic approach,with its power to clarify the communicative purposes and linguistic features of genre texts,supports the characteristic feature of specificity in ESP.This paper reviews the three main focuses of genre-analytic research in ESP literature: 1) generic integrity and linguistic features,2) generic resources,functional variation and cultural contexts,and 3) genre sets,interdiscursivity and critical genre analysis.The analysis indicates that the genre approach is not limited to move analysis as is generally understood,and that the genre-analytic approach in ESP has now become a cross disciplinary,multi dimensional,multi perspective and critical analysis of discourse.The paper also illuminates how the genre analytic approach has provided strong empirical support for the development of theory and practice in ESP.

Abstract:In recent years, English for Specific Purposes has been widely adopted in College English courses, which presents a great challenge for all English teachers. With particular characteristics, ESP calls for the interdisciplinary knowledge to meet the needs of learners. Accordingly, teachers’ role changes dramatically from the traditional language lecturer to multiple roles especially as a cooperator with content teachers. Cooperation with content teachers is a complex process which involves what and how to cooperate. By analyzing the previous researches and different specialisms of English teachers and content teachers, English teachers will not strive to learn as much content knowledge as possible but find their own and unique status in teaching with their linguistic knowledge. In this way a successful teaching of ESP can be achieved. Along with the challenges, ESP also provides a platform to conduct the communicative approach in class. With the equal status and the common ground built in ESP class, communicative teaching will be more effective.

Abstract:English for Specific Purposes (ESP) provides English language instruction that aims to serve learners’ communication needs in English in a certain domain. In fact, addressing learners’ specific goals to use English in a specific area is what distinguishes ESP from English for General Purposes teaching (Hyland in English for Specific Purposes 21:385–395, 2002). Abstract:The fact that languages are living organisms that evolve and vary as a result of different factors, including societal vicissitudes, cultural influences, technological advancements, migration and intercultural communication, among others, requires a continued effort to identify, characterize and represent the new lexical forms and meanings that emerge in various contexts and domains. Lexicologists and lexicographers thus need to always take on new challenges in their attempt to adequately describe and map our ever-changing language landscapes. Not only does everyday language change but also languages for special purposes (LSP) are subject to variation. On the one hand, new terms and senses are incorporated into already existing lexicons, while, on the other hand, micro-languages with a rich variety of novel lexical items keep appearing. Some cases in point are ecotourism discourse which has been accelerated by recent greater awareness of the impact of human activities on the environment (Penz & Fill, 2022); the language of digital technology, now that societies and technologies have become increasingly interconnected (Würschinger, 2021); certain medical talk, as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic (Salazar & Wild, 2022), to mention just a few areas of lexical innovation.
A Bibliometric Analysis of English for Specific Purposes from 2011 to 2023 Using Citespace: Visualizing Status, Themes, Evolution, and Emerging Trends

Abstract:Introduction. Research on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) emerged in the 1960s. A few researchers conducted reviews on ESP literature. However, there is currently a lack of up-to-date and comprehensive bibliometric analysis covering the last decade from an international perspective, particularly covering the last decade's developments in ESP research. Purpose. Combining bibliometric analysis and systematic review of the literature on English for Specific Purposes, this study serves to objectively maps the knowledge area, and aims to identify the current status, major research themes, evolution, and the emerging trends in this field. Method. To maintain the objectivity and transparency, the review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. Based on literature retrieved from the Web of Science core collection, a total of 1657 bibliometric records published from 2011 to 2023 were visualized and analyzed via Citespace. Results. The current research status through publication distribution and co-country network shows that the research is undergoing a steady increase and international authorship. Clusters and systematic review of citing articles indicate four themes, i.e., “linguistic inquires”, “teaching pedagogy”, “student learning”, and “teacher development”. Through the timezone view of keyword co-occurrence network, four features, such as the predominance of genre, corpus and pedagogy, varied pedagogies, varied research methodologies, and technology-assisted teaching, were identified. The keyword and citation burst detection, as well as systematic review of citing articles, were conducted to identify the research trends. It is found that EAP, teacher development, needs analysis in under-researched settings, as well as EMI and Corpus-based teaching pedagogies are the new frontiers in this field. Conclusions. The field of English for Specific Purposes continues to experience exponential growth and development, indicating an ongoing expansion and advancement of research in this area. This paper provides references for researchers to understand the status, hidden structure, evolution, and emerging trends of research on English for Specific Purposes.

Abstract:English education has been promoted widely in China and has driven scholarly attention to young Chinese learners of English. However, not much has been done to address language ideologies embedded in English education oriented towards young Chinese learners from a perspective informed by the research on the global spread of English as a lingua franca (ELF). To narrow the gap, we adopt an ELF perspective to investigate textbook representations and teacher perceptions of English in relation to culture and identity in Chinese primary education. The findings demonstrate a Standard English ideology and an essentialist approach to language. We thus argue for a reconsideration of ‘English’ in primary education in order to empower young generations of English learners in China. While English is an essential language for international engagement, it is necessary to reconsider the relationship between English and China and to review the ownership of English.

Abstract:This paper reviews the literature on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) research in 15 CSSCI foreign language journals in China’s CNKI database over the last two decades. The data have been quantified and visualized with Citespace. This paper analyzes research advances and themes, and then puts forward suggestions based on the current situation of college English teaching in China. The findings reveal that: 1) ESP publications have shown a rising trend during the past 20 years; 2) The study of ESP in academic dissertations is mainly at the MA level; 3) ESP research focuses on such issues as relationships between ESP and college English, academic English, corpus and teaching modes; 4) The dominant method of ESP research in China is non-empirical while more and more empirical studies have emerged since 2011. This study also critically analyzes the research limitations and recommendations of the ESP study.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of the internationalization of higher education,Shanghai Advisory Committee on English Language Teaching at Tertiary Level conducted a large-scale English language needs survey among 10 000 college students and 500 EFL and discipline teachers from 24 institutions of higher learning in Shanghai. Via questionnaires and interviews,the survey revealed that 1)English assumes an increasingly facilitating role in students' academic study;2)students' English competence is found insufficient to meet the requirements and expectations of their discipline teachers; 3) there is pervasive dissatisfaction with current EFLT among students and discipline teachers; 4)the majority of the students stay positive about substituting EGP with ESP,as contrary to the perceptions of EFL teachers. Based on a detailed analysis of the results,several suggestions are put forward to address the issues in EFLT.

Abstract:In the past two decades, how to reform ELT successfully has become a heated issue of discussion among researchers and English teachers in China. This paper suggests a geographic plus diachronic perspective of ELT studies with an aim to encourage more rational innovations in this field. To start with, it points out the important position of ELT studies and then narrows down the scope of survey by defining two conceptions of applied linguistics: a broad version and a narrow version. It goes on introducing two major paradigms in ELT studies in detail, the British tradition and the American school, followed by a discussion of existing problems and some suggestions to solve the problems.

Abstract:With China’s rising role in the global economic market, both local and international employers seek graduates with well-developed communication skills in at least one additional language to complement their specific knowledge and abilities. University graduates are taught English for Specific Purposes (ESP) within their particular disciplines. This article reflects on the first author’s action research, using student presentations as a pedagogical practice with first year postgraduate students not majoring in English in a Chinese university. The authors propose that ESP pedagogy needs to progress beyond the monological Chinese Confucian model of education to a dialogic, inclusive, and hospitable model of the classroom as an imagined third space where creative, critical thinking is encouraged. This research aims to contribute to Chinese ESP pedagogy, to inform international educators of developments in the education of graduates for internationalized business practice, and to contribute to the global discourse on ESP pedagogy.

Internet-mediated Intercultural English Language Education in China's Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:In the information age, the advent of Internet technologies has made it possible to transform language learning and teaching, through online intercultural exploration and exchange. The role of English as an international language in global communication is recognised in China's latest national guidelines for tertiary language curricula, which seek to develop professionals possessing both sound language proficiency and intercultural competence, alongside other goals such as information literacy and learner autonomy. This thesis examines the actual delivery of an intercultural dimension mediated by Internet technologies. To this end, this thesis reports an investigation into the situation of Internet-mediated intercultural English language teaching and learning at China's higher education institutions conducted between 2008 and 2009. Multi-stage and multi-site fieldwork combined a survey approach and a collective case study approach. The researcher being the primary data collection tool, data obtained from questionnaire survey, interview (and informal conversation), observation and document collection instruments have been combined. The survey findings thus not only have breadth, but also provide materials for in-depth studies of sample cases. Four cases, demonstrating a variety of institutional, individual, pedagogical and technological factors, are analysed at greater length to explore whether evidenced Internet-mediated practices might facilitate an intercultural approach to teaching and learning. Comparisons suggest that, despite their differing characteristics and contexts, there are some commonalities in terms of Internet-mediated activities entailing elements of an intercultural approach. These elements are synthesised and mapped out in an original pedagogical framework for Internet-mediated intercultural teaching and learning, with a set of guiding principles. This framework advocates establishing an Internet-mediated intra-class community as the basis for undertaking intercultural language activities, complementing the prevailing telecollaborative model for the development of intercultural communicative competence. This outcome contributes to a fuller understanding of the design of Internet-mediated intercultural language activities.

Abstract:The rise of English as a global language has led scholars to call for a paradigm shift in the field of English language teaching (ELT) to match the new sociolinguistic landscape of the twenty-first century. In recent years a considerable amount of classroom-based research and language teacher education (LTE) research has emerged to investigate these proposals in practice. This paper outlines key proposals for change in language teaching from the related fields of World Englishes (WE), English as a lingua franca (ELF), English as an international language (EIL), and Global Englishes, and critically reviews the growing body of pedagogical research conducted within these domains. Adopting the methodology of a systematic review, 58 empirical articles published between 2010 and 2020 were shortlisted, of which 38 were given an in-depth critical review and contextualized within a wider body of literature. Synthesis of classroom research suggests a current lack of longitudinal designs, an underuse of direct measures to explore the effects of classroom interventions, and under-representation of contexts outside of university language classrooms. Synthesis of teacher education research suggests future studies need to adopt more robust methodological designs which measure the effects of Global Englishes content on teacher beliefs and pedagogical practices both before and throughout the programme, and after teachers return to the classroom.

Abstract:The increasing demand of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has resulted in the need for a lingua franca of science, technology, education, and business. The field of ESP has promptly flourished recently to play an important part in English language teaching and research. Accordingly, the desires to master technical terms to meet job requirements force people to know ESP rather than basic English for daily communication. Researches on teaching and learning ESP have been conducted widely not only in Vietnam but other countries by high prestigious scholars and knowledgeable researchers with the main purpose to figure out the most effective approaches, which enables educators, teachers and learners as well to adapt the best teaching methods to accomplish their wishes. Abstract:This paper includes a current evaluation as well as a course layout. English for unique functions (ESP) within the subject of ELT (English Language Teaching), 2) the characteristics of teachers and students in ESP, and 3) the demanding situations associated with the trainer, pupil, surroundings, and other factors in ESP teaching. The ESP in ELT refers back to the particular English language necessities of the target learners or scholars. It describes the coaching of a certain English genre for college students with a defined set of targets that is geared in the direction of and concentrated on English teaching and studying. Based totally on an assessment of desires, targets, and the sports requiring English, ESP is created and advanced. Positive duties as a trainer, such as asking college students to develop study goals, creating a supportive environment, getting to know their surroundings, and assessing college students' progress, are all approaches to shaping publications. At the same time, getting to know techniques that are properly designed, difficult-to-remember know-how, and a specific ardor for learning are all associated with newcomers. Within the implementation of ELT, there are challenges and issues related to the instructor in coaching ESP, inclusive of the poor quality of the lectures and textbooks, the lecturers' inadequate qualifications and teaching strategies, and the absence of a theoretical framework for coaching ESP. difficulties relating to the students, such as their demographics, the demands of learning ESP, their English skill ability, the differences between their native tongue and other languages, their loss of vocabulary, their reliance on dictionaries, and their lack of know-how of how to use dictionaries, particularly ESP phrases. while the environment-associated challenges consist of a shortage of educational substances, courses with an excessive number of students, and a heavy emphasis on exams.

Abstract:English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programs are specifically designed for learners who desire to enhance their English proficiency in a specific professional field of study, which is typically taught at universities. These programs are designed to provide students with the English they need for specific academic subjects, such as Economics, Psychology, Management, etc. The 21st century brought a new flow of challenges. A growing number of cross-national projects, the need to raise intercultural awareness, the overwhelming number of inter-state activities, and the desire to become a global citizen are some of the consequences. The full development of skills that guarantee high-level communication between future specialists and their foreign colleagues in various academic and professional settings is a crucial factor in the efficiency and achievement of specialists’ work. All the above-mentioned factors had a significant impact on educational policies and classroom activities. Educators started looking for new techniques for teaching English. New technologies in the ESP classroom encourage students to be active and work together, create an authentic, supportive, and productive learning environment that helps to improve learning achievements, make the learning process more successful, and allow students to acquire relevant knowledge.
Perceptions of ESP in Taiwan

Abstract:In recent years, many Asian countries, such as Thailand, Japan, and South Korea have actively advocated English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education to prepare students’ language skills and knowledge to meet the competitive needs of the international workplace. Taiwan is no exception. The present study investigated both students’ and teachers’ perceptions of ESP courses at a private university in Taiwan. The ESP courses integrated a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach to create a meaning-making environment for students to use target languages in communicative situations that resemble real life (Ellis, 2003, 2009; Long, 2016; Nunan, 2006). Participants included one hundred and forty-three non-English major students and two EFL teachers. Both questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to obtain quantitative and qualitative perspectives. The findings of the quantitative data indicate that students reported benefitting from the ESP courses and gaining awareness of the importance of improving their English competence for the workplace. Moreover, the findings suggest that tasks that inspire student collaboration and opportunities for teacher facilitation and social interactions all contribute to the effectiveness of the ESP curriculum. Despite the benefits, challenges of implementing the ESP courses are also discussed in the chapter.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive needs analysis of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses in colleges of art and design in China. By examining the perspectives of undergraduate students, graduate students, art teachers, and English teachers, the research identifies consensus and divergence in ESP needs and implementation challenges. The analysis reveals a strong demand among students for specialized English learning, with a particular emphasis on receptive and interactive skills. However, there is a widespread acknowledgement of students' difficulties across ESP skills, indicating a gap between student competencies and the professional demands, thus highlighting the need for targeted educational interventions to effectively address the difficulties. Notably, reading and writing abilities emerge as the most lacking skills. While there is unanimous recognition of the positive impact of ESP on students' professional abilities and international competitiveness, a significant disparity exists in the enthusiasm for implementing ESP courses, paticularly with resistence from English teachers. The study highlights the critical challenges in ESP teaching, with teacher qualifications identified as the most prominent issue. Interestingly, English teachers attribute difficulties primarily to teaching materials, indicating a potential lack of readiness for ESP course delivery. A gap is also observed between teachers' evaluations of student abilities and students' self-assessment, especially among undergraduate freshmen, suggesting an overestimation of their English proficiency in professional contexts. The paper concludes with the implication that for effective ESP course implementation in colleges of art and design in China, targeted faculty development programs and a collaborative approach involving English teachers, art teachers, and professionals are essential. The collaboration should aim to develop materials that integrate specific professional knowledge with linguistic expertise. Additionally, a balanced approach combining general English proficiency and specialized English training is recommended to address both foundational and specialized language skills. Overall, the study underscores the need for targeted ESP courses in art and design education, tailored to bridge the gap between current proficiency levels and professional language requirements.

Abstract:Genre-oriented graduate-level research writing instruction is increasingly being implemented in universities around the world, to cater for the widely-felt demand to provide graduate writing support to student populations of immensely diverse compositions. In China, where research writing instruction for graduate students across disciplines is urgently needed, emerging EAP teachers are learning the ropes of genre-based pedagogies through practice. This paper reports a case study of how two novice EAP teachers, who had attended a professional development program, went about conducting research writing instruction to doctoral students at their own universities in China. Our dataset consisted of audio-recordings of the focal teachers’ classroom instruction, various types of documentary data, and interview data. We present the findings with a comparison between the two cases of pedagogical practices, by highlighting the distinguishing features of the focal teachers’ classroom instruction, and illuminating their instruction on language. Our study contributes to the limited literature on EAP research writing instruction and will inform EAP teachers’ training and professional development.
