Abstract:The generation of long-lived charge transfer (CT) states in electron donor/acceptor dyads upon photoexcitation is crucial for artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis and photovoltaics. Electron spin control is a novel strategy to prolong the CT state lifetime via generation of the (CT)-C-3 triplet state, instead of the traditional short-lived (CT)-C-1 state. This method involves a local triplet excited state ((LE)-L-3) as the precursor of charge separation (CS), and the electron forbidden feature of the charge recombination (CR) of (CT)-C-3 -> S-0 vs. the electron spin allowed (CT)-C-1 -> S-0 prolongs the CT state lifetime. In this article, we summarized the recent developments and challenges in this emerging fascinating area.

Abstract:Organic charge-transfer superstructures are enabling new interfacial electronics, such as organic thermoelectrics, spin-charge converters, and solar cells. These carbon-based materials could also play an important role in spin-based electronics due to their exceptionally long spin lifetime. However, to explore these potentials a coherent design strategy to control interfacial charge-transfer interaction is indispensable. Here we report that the control of organic crystallization and interfacial electron coupling are keys to dictate external stimuli responsive behaviors in organic charge-transfer superstructures. The integrated experimental and computational study reveals the importance of chemically driven interfacial coupling in organic charge-transfer superstructures. Such degree of engineering opens up a new route to develop a new generation of functional charge-transfer materials, enabling important advance in all organic interfacial electronics.

Abstract:Photo-induced charge separation (CS) and charge recombination (CR) are crucial for molecular systems used in artificial photosynthesis, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis, and these processes are also important for fundamental photochemical studies. This review article focuses on the recent developments in CS/CR, long-lived charge transfer (CT) state formation, and CR-induced intersystem crossing (ISC) in organic molecular systems, ranging from discussions on the molecular structural features dictating the kinetics and thermodynamics of CS/CR and electron spin transport, as well as the spectroscopies used for the characterization of the CS/CR and the CR-induced ISC. Emphases are put on the molecular design rationales, from the point of view of organic chemists, to achieve fast and efficient CS but slow CR, as such to access the long-lived CT state. The roles of the electron spin in controlling the CS, CR and formation of the long-lived CT state are discussed with exemplars. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy for characterization of the charge and electron spin transport in the CS, CR and ISC processes is introduced.
Multifunctional Molecular Charge-Transfer Thin Films.

Abstract:We report the controlled interfacial interaction in crystallized organic charge transfer thin films, consisting of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and C60. The induced broad-band absorption from the UV to near-infrared region leads to a wavelength dependent ambipolar (negative/positive) photoresponse, while multi-stimuli responsive behavior is achieved through charge-transfer interactions. In addition, by coupling with the tetrathiafulvalene-(7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) charge transfer complex, a significantly increased conductivity is achieved. The controlled interfacial charge transfer interaction provides an efficient approach to obtain multifunctional molecular crystallized thin films with a superior external stimuli response.

Abstract:Supramolecular assembly utilizing noncovalent interaction to construct ordered molecular charge-transfer solids has led to significant advancement and breakthrough in energy-efficient molecular electronics, memories and solar cells. However, to exploit the coupling across these different energy regimes, the method that is capable of manipulating charge-spinlattice interactions is indispensable. Here, by rational chemical design of the supramolecular assembled charge-transfer networks, opto-ferroic properties can be coupled, in which a collective electron transfer and ordering strongly influence the dipole and spin orders, as well as their coupling. The supramolecular charge-transfer crystal presented here opens up a new route for the development of multifunctional organics that can lead to significant advancement in molecular ferronics.

Abstract:Charge transfer (CT) in molecular electron donor‐acceptor systems is pivotal for artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis, photovoltaics and fundamental photochemistry. We summarized the recent development in study of CT and discussed its application in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The direct experimental proof of the spin multiplicity of the charge separated (CS) state with pulsed laser excited time‐resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy was discussed. Experimental determination of the electron exchange energy ( J ) of the CS state, with magnetic field effect on its yield or lifetime was introduced. The electron spin transfer accompanying the CT, studied with pulsed EPR spectra was briefly discussed. Tuning of the CT yield and kinetics with selective vibration excitation of the linker (the bridge) with IR pulse was presented. Above all, these studies show that there are more fun than simply monitoring the formation of the cations and anions and the kinetics or CS yields in this area.

Abstract:Charge transfer and recombination across the inorganic/organic interface in nanocrystal or quantum dot (QD)-molecule hybrid materials have been extensively studied. Principles of controlling charge transfer and recombination via energetics and electronic coupling have been established. However, the use of electron spin to control transfer and recombination pathways in such systems remains relatively underexplored. Here we use CdS QD-alizarin (AZ) as a model system to demonstrate this principle. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, we found that the charge-separated states (QD--AZ+) created by selectively exciting AZ molecules mostly recombined to regenerate ground-state complexes, whereas apparently the "same" charge separated states created by exciting QDs recombined to produce AZ molecular triplet states. Such a difference can be traced to the distinct spin configurations between excited QDs (QD*, with an ill-defined spin) and AZ (1AZ*, spin singlet) and the asymmetric electron and hole spin-flip rates in II-VI group QDs. The transferability of such a principle was confirmed by similar observations obtained for CdS QD-tetracene complexes. Opening an avenue for controlling charge transfer and recombination pathways via electron spin is potentially important for applications such as artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Despite significant progress made over the past decade in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules as a material paradigm for enhancing the performance of organic light-emitting diodes, the underlying spin-flip mechanism in these charge-transfer (CT)-type molecular systems remains an enigma, even since its initial report in 2012. While the initial and final electronic states involved in spin-flip between the lowest singlet and lowest triplet excited states are well understood, the exact dynamic processes and the role of intermediate high-lying triplet (T) states are still not fully comprehended. In this context, we propose a comprehensive model to describe the spin-flip processes applicable for a typical CT-type molecule, revealing the origin of the high-lying T state in a partial molecular framework in CT-type molecules. This work provides experimental and theoretical insights into the understanding of intersystem crossing for CT-type molecules, facilitating more precise control over spin-flip rates and thus advancing toward developing the next-generation platform for purely organic luminescent candidates.

Abstract:We prepared conceptually novel, fully rigid, spiro compact electron donor (Rhodamine B, lactam form, RB)/acceptor (naphthalimide; NI) orthogonal dyad to attain the long-lived triplet charge-transfer ((CT)-C-3) state, based on the electron spin control using spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). Transient absorption (TA) spectra indicate the first charge separation (CS) takes place within 2.5 ps, subsequent SOCT-ISC takes 8 ns to produce the(3)NI* state. Then the slow secondary CS (125 ns) gives the long-lived(3)CT state (0.94 mu s in deaerated n-hexane) with high energy level (ca. 2.12 eV). The cascade photophysical processes of the dyad upon photoexcitation are summarized as(1)NI*->(CT)-C-1 ->(NI)-N-3*->(CT)-C-3. With time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra, an EEEAAA electron-spin polarization pattern was observed for the naphthalimide-localized triplet state. Our spiro compact dyad structure and the electron spin-control approach is different to previous methods for which invoking transition-metal coordination or chromophores with intrinsic ISC ability is mandatory.

Abstract:The research on electron transfer coupled spin transition regulating the valence state and spin state transition of metal ions is promising and challenging. Herein, we report a cyano-bridged {FeIII2FeII2} molecular square complex, {[Fe(Tp)(CN)3]2-[Fe(bnbpen)]2}(ClO4)2·8CH3OH (1·8CH3OH, bnbpen = N,N'-bis-(2-naphthylmethyl)-N,N'-bis(2-picolayl)-ethylenediamine), and its free of solvents form (1). Combined single-crystal X-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectra, magnetic measurements, and Mössbauer spectra reveal that 1·8CH3OH and 1 exhibit reversible one-step and two-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with temperature change, between the low-temperature state {FeII,LS(μ-CN)FeIII,LS}2 (LS = low spin, HS = high spin) and the high-temperature state {FeIII,LS(μ-CN)FeII,HS}2, respectively.

Abstract:Charge‐transfer complexes (CTCs), formed through electron transfer between electron donor (D) and electron acceptor (A) components, present unprecedented capabilities for diverse applications. As semiconductors, they offer tunable bandgap and charge‐transport properties. Their flexible chemistry allows tailoring matter at the molecular and atomic levels. Owing to these unique features, CTCs are promising candidates for applications in catalysis, optoelectronics, and sensing. Supramolecular assemblies, formed through electronic charge transfer between two or more entities, represent a rich class of compounds dubbed as charge‐transfer complexes (CTCs). Their distinctive formation pathway, rooted in charge‐transfer processes at the interface of CTC‐forming components, results in the delocalization of electronic charge along molecular stacks, rendering CTCs intrinsic molecular conductors. Since the discovery of CTCs, intensive research has explored their unique properties including magnetism, conductivity, and superconductivity. Their more recently recognized semiconducting functionality has inspired recent developments in applications requiring organic semiconductors. In this context, CTCs offer a tuneable energy gap, unique charge‐transport properties, tailorable physicochemical interactions, photoresponsiveness, and the potential for scalable manufacturing. Here, an updated viewpoint on CTCs is provided, presenting them as emerging organic semiconductors. To this end, their electronic and chemical properties alongside their synthesis methods are reviewed. The unique properties of CTCs that benefit various related applications in the realms of organic optoelectronics, catalysts, and gas sensors are discussed. Insights for future developments and existing limitations are described.

Abstract:AbstractWe observed a long‐lived charge transfer (CT) state in a novel orthogonal compact electron donor–acceptor dyads, with closed form of rhodamine (Rho) as electron donor and pyromellitimide (PI),or thionated PI, as electron acceptor. The two parts in the dyads are connected via a spiro quaternary carbon atom, thus the torsion between the donor and acceptor is completely inhibited, which is beneficial to reduce the reorganization energy and to exploit the Marcus inverted region effect to prolong the CT state lifetime. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra show that the charge separation is rather fast, while nanosecond transient absorption spectra confirmed the formation of long‐lived CT state (2.6 μs). Time‐resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectra determined the spin multiplicity of the long living state and assigned it to a 3CT state. Replacement of an oxygen atom in the PI part with a sulfur atom favoring classical intersystem crossing processes, causes a consistently shortening of the lifetime of the 3CT state (0.29 μs).
Identifying Different Spin Mixing Channels Occurring in Charge-Transfer States

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) states play a critical role in harvesting nonemissive triplets realized by triplet-to-singlet conversion through spin mixing to generate thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) by providing a spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and small energy difference (Delta E-ST). This paper discusses the spin mixing directly identified by magneto-photoluminescence (magneto-PL) for intramolecular and intermolecular CT states based on a synthesized donor-acceptor-donor (D-AD) type molecule DMTD-Cz. The PL spectra indicate that this D-A-D molecule shows intramolecular CT states-only in solutions-but both intramolecular and intermolecular CT states in solid-state thin films, allowing separate identification of the spin mixing occurring in intramolecular and intermolecular CT states using magneto-PL measurements. We found that intramolecular and intermolecular CT states exhibit negligible and appreciable magneto-PL signals up to 900 mT at room temperature, respectively. Simultaneously, the intramolecular and intermolecular CT states show negligible and appreciable delayed fluorescence, respectively, in thin films. These results provide the direct observation that the SOC generates trivial and vital spin mixing within intramolecular and intermolecular CT states. This indicates that the triplets in intermolecular CT states can be harvested by using a spin mixing mechanism while the triplets in intramolecular CT states should be harvested by using a spin conserving mechanism through localized triplet excitons toward developing efficient organic light-emitting materials.

Abstract:Combining the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism, we have theoretically studied controllable conductance switching of the organic spintronics and interpreted it with the voltage-induced polaron picture. The exponential decay of magnetoresistance with bias voltage is qualitatively consistent with the experimental result.

Abstract:With phenoxazine (PXZ) as the electron donor and perylene-3,4-dicarboximide (PMI) as the electron acceptor, we prepared a compact, orthogonal electron donor-acceptor dyad (PMI-PXZ) to study the spin-orbit charge transfer-induced intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). A weak charge transfer (CT) absorption band, due to S0 → 1CT transition, was observed (ε = 2840 M-1 cm-1 at 554 nm, FWHM: 2850 cm-1), which is different from that of the previously reported analogue dyad with phenothiazine as the electron donor (PMI-PTZ), for which no CT absorption band was observed. A long-lived triplet state was observed (lifetime τT = 182 μs) with nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and the singlet oxygen quantum yield (ΦΔ = 76%) is higher than that of the previously reported analogue dyad PMI-PTZ (ΦΔ = 57%). Ultrafast charge separation (ca. 0.14 ps) and slow charge recombination (1.4 ns) were observed with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. With time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (TREPR), we confirmed the SOCT-ISC mechanism, and the electron spin polarization phase pattern of the triplet-state TREPR spectrum is (e, e, a, e, a, a), which is dramatically different from that of PMI-PTZ (a, e, a, e, a, e), indicating that the triplet-state TREPR spectrum of a specific chromophore in the electron donor-acceptor dyads is not only dependent on the geometry of the dyads but also dependent on the structure of the electron donor (or acceptor). Even one-atom variation in the donor structure may cause significant influence on the electron spin selectivity of the ISC of the electron donor-acceptor dyads.

Abstract:Optical control of spin is of central importance in the research of ultrafast spintronic devices utilizing spin dynamics at short time scales. Recently developed optical approaches such as ultrafast demagnetization, spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques open new pathways to manipulate spin through its interaction with photon, orbit, charge or phonon. However, these processes are limited by either the long thermal recovery time or the low-temperature requirement. Here we experimentally demonstrate ultrafast coherent spin precession via optical charge-transfer processes in the exchange-coupled Fe/CoO system at room temperature. The efficiency of spin precession excitation is significantly higher and the recovery time of the exchange-coupling torque is much shorter than for the demagnetization procedure, which is desirable for fast switching. The exchange coupling is a key issue in spin valves and tunnelling junctions, and hence our findings will help promote the development of exchange-coupled device concepts for ultrafast coherent spin manipulation.

Abstract:Charge-transfer (CT) is an important binding force in the formation of intermolecular complexes, and there have been a variety of theoretical models proposed to quantify this effect. These approaches, which typically rely on a definition of a "CT-free" state based on a partition of the system, sometimes yield significantly different results for a given intermolecular complex. Two widely used definitions of the "CT-free" state, the absolutely localized molecular orbitals (ALMO) method (where only on-fragment orbital mixings are permitted) and the constrained density functional theory (CDFT) approach (where fragment electron populations are fixed), are carefully examined in this work. Natural bond orbital (NBO) and the regularized symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) are also briefly considered. Results for the ALMO and CDFT definitions of CT are compared on a broad range of model systems, including hydrogen-bonding systems, borane complexes, metal carbonyl complexes, and complexes formed by water and metal cations. For most of these systems, CDFT yields a much smaller equilibrium CT energy compared to that given by the ALMO-based definition. This is mainly because the CDFT population constraint does not fully inhibit CT, which means that the CDFT "CT-free" state is in fact CT-contaminated. Examples of this contamination include (i) matching forward and backward donation (e.g., formic acid dimer) and (ii) unidirectional CT without changing fragment populations. The magnitude of the latter effect is quantified in systems such as the water dimer by employing a 3-space density constraint in addition to the orbital constraint. Furthermore, by means of the adiabatic EDA, it is shown that several observable effects of CT, such as the "pyramidalization" of the planar BH3 molecule upon the complexation with Lewis bases, already appear on the "CT-free" CDFT surface. These results reveal the essential distinctions between the ALMO and CDFT definitions of CT and suggest that the former is more consistent with accepted understanding of the role of CT in intermolecular binding.
