Abstract:Inspired by the multi-wavelength method, the present work innovatively introduces an easier-to-describe emissivity ratio model to replace the customary grey body assumption, thus polishing the algorithm of the traditional two-colour method. The precision of this method was verified with a blackbody furnace, for which the relative errors were within +/- 1.50%. In situ experiments show that the air-coal flame in a stokerfeed boiler is significantly close to a grey body over the detected wavelength range of 600-1000 nm, except for the emission/ absorption lines, and a nearly negligible disparity (25.58 K) is found between the temperature outcome of the improved method and that of the traditional method. The oxy-coke flame in a pilot-scale test facility, however, differs from a grey body to a certain degree within that range, resulting in the deviation of the temperature obtained by the traditional method from that obtained by the improved method by more than 190 K. Obviously, the traditional method is no longer valid in this case. Thus, the two-colour method is sensitive to emissivity variations of the target, and the grey body assumption incurs distinct restrictions on application of the traditional method, thereby highlighting the advantages of the improved method.

Abstract:Being supposed that the target is greybody in the principle of two-color pyrometry, the color temperature is regarded as the true temperature. The main cause of the error is emissivity. In the published literatures on emissivity epsilon, the wavelength lambda was taken into account but the temperature T was neglected. The curve of epsilon(lambda) against lambda could be obtained in certain temperature. In this paper the emissivity is considered that it relates not only with wavelength but also with temperature, and the expression of epsilon(lambda,T) can be gained. Therefore, a series of epsilon(lambda) against lambda curves under different temperature can be united into the form of epsilon(lambda,T).

Abstract:Radiation heat transfer is the major error source in temperature measurement of buoyancy pool fire and fire whirl.By combinations of multiple thermocouples with different diameters arranged at the same location,the radiation error in temperature measurement of fire whirl by thermocouple is analyzed,and whereby a new approach for correction of temperature measurement is developed.The different theoretical correction formulations are compared and the new correction method is justified by comparison of the correction results from the data of two groups of thermocouples with different diameters.

Abstract:The temperature field of an axisymmetric ethylene diffusion flame is measured using laser holographic interferometry. Temperature field inversion is completed with the aid of components distribution divided from numerical simulation of combustion and air components assumption. Error analysis of key steps is conducted using the theoretical formula of interference temperature measurement and characteristic structure of fringes obtained from optical simulation. Based on the calculation and analysis, air components assumption will not cause significant error in the low temperature region but will result in high error in the high temperature region. Moreover, the small error in environmental temperature measurement transfer to a high temperature range will expand more than tenfold. Results of temperature measurement using air components assumption relative to combustion simulation require the greatest amendment amounting to seven percent.

Abstract:This paper investigates a self-sustained swirl-stabilized pulverized coal combustion chamber, specially designed to validate numerical models under atmospheric and oxy-fuel conditions. For this purpose, a comprehensive model, which accounts for both atmospheric and oxy-fuel conditions, is developed based on Large Eddy Simulation. To describe the turbulent gas-phase chemistry, a 4D Flamelet Generated Manifold based tabulated chemistry model is coupled with the artificially thickened flame approach and implemented in an Euler-Lagrange framework. The chemistry model is able to account for finite rate chemistry, heat losses, mixing devolatilization gases and char off-gases. Radiative heat transfer is included by solving the radiative transfer equation, applying the discrete ordinate method for angular discretization and a weighted sum of gray gas model for the spectral resolution, while particles are treated as gray. The simulation results from the combustion chamber are extensively validated against the available measurement data. Operating conditions with different atmospheres are investigated to validate the models' prediction accuracy for air and oxy-fuel atmospheres. The validation process is carried out using velocity fields, particle temperature measurements and the gas-species concentrations. Overall, the comparisons between simulations and measurements reveal a favorable agreement with only small differences near the burner opening. These results demonstrate the suitability of large-eddy simulation combined with tabulated chemistry for predicting the combustion of pulverized coal in conventional air and oxy-fuel atmospheres. Further analyses of the self-sustained coal flames are carried out; in particular, the influence of different atmospheres on the interaction of coal particles with the gas phase is studied.

Abstract:The distribution of temperature and soot volume fraction for swirling flame is very important for turbulent mechanism research and swirl burner design. Based on flame radiation inversion analysis, this paper proposed a 3-D temperature and soot volume fraction reconstruction model by using the CCD flame image detector. The performance of the proposed method was examined by a numerical simulation. The effects of noise and radiative properties on the reconstruction accuracy were discussed. The temperature and soot volume fraction for 450 kg/h heavy oil fueled flame were measured. The results show that the proposed method was capable of reproducing the temperature and soot volume fraction for flame, even with noisy data. The difference of the temperature measurement with thermocouple was less than 50°C. © 2013 Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.

Abstract:Axisymmetric flames are widely used in research on flame combustion mechanisms and mass and heat transfer because of their simple structure and applicability to complex reactions and transfer calculations. A new optical diagnostic method named light field camera has been validated as applicable for online detection of the temperature field of an axisymmetric flame. Reconstruction algorithms can be used to estimate the distribution of the flame temperature from the light field images and validated by setting a known distribution of temperature and radiative properties. In the present study, a model of meshed axisymmetric flame light field imaging was put forward. The complicated distribution of temperature and radiative properties were considered in the model after validation using two absorption coefficients arranged at different region. An axisymmetric laminar coflow diffusion ethylene flame was modeled to generate input data. Then, the Lucy–Richardson and nearest neighbor filtering deconvolution algorithms were applied to the refocused light field images for sectional reconstruction of the temperature field. Under the condition of high temperature and soot generated from ethylene flame, the obtained reconstructed temperature was comparable to the input temperature from 1400 K to 2000 K, within the detectable radiative intensity range of the light field camera.

Abstract:A new method is proposed for simultaneous reconstruction of three-dimensional particle temperature, particle concentration, and H2O concentration distributions of axisymmetric flames using multi-spectral flame images. The multi-spectral flame images are obtained by cameras, each of which is equipped with one of three filters whose center wavelength is 700 nm, 900 nm, and 950 nm. The absorption of H2O is considered to be represented solely by the monochromatic image obtained at a wavelength of 950 nm, whereas the thermal radiation of particles is assumed to be represented by all three monochromatic flame images. For a signal-to-noise ratio value greater than 70 dB, the temperature and concentration distributions were reconstructed accurately. The experiment results indicate the particle temperature, particle concentration, and H2O concentration are low in the inner cone of the flame and they are high in the outer cone of the flame. The maximum difference between the temperature calculated from the flame images and the temperature measured by the thermocouple is 5%.

Abstract:High-frequency temperature measurements were carefully conducted for a 15 kW buoyant turbulent ethylene diffusion flame over a 15.2 cm diameter gas burner with air co-flow. A dual-thermocouple probe, consisting of two fine-wire thermocouples with 25 <math>μm</math> and 50 <math>μm</math> wire diameters, was used to determine a compensated turbulent gas temperature. A sensitivity analysis shows that temperatures resolved using this dual-thermocouple technique are less sensitive to changes in thermocouple bead size, therefore, uncertainty is greatly reduced even when soot deposition on the thermocouple bead occurs in sooty flames. Mean and root-mean square (rms) fluctuations of gas temperature were recorded in a two-dimensional plane across the flame centerline. The mean gas temperature monotonically decreases away from the flame centerline at most flame heights, except for 1 diameter above the burner, where a temperature dip is observed. The rms temperature peaks shift from the edge of the flame to the center as the height increases. This is due to the enhanced mixing between fuel and air, which is further shown using probability density functions of the local gas temperature. A systematic temperature dataset with high spatial resolution is established for sooty flames, which is valuable for future soot and radiation model validation.

Abstract:Many advances in the thermal sciences depend on accurate determination of three-dimensional temperature distribution. Previous measurements by thermocouples and pyrometers were mainly restricted to time-average "point" measurements of temperature. In this paper, a model to measure the three-dimensional temperature distribution according to the flame image captured by CCD camera is studied numerically. The formation of the flame image is considered as two stages: radiation transfer in the participating medium and the optical imaging process through the lens of the camera. The inverse analysis based on Monte Carlo method and the optical model of the flame image are introduced to describe these two stages respectively. The flame of the pulverized coal is considered as a three-dimensional, absorbing, emitting, anisotropically scattering medium and full Of CO2, N-2 and carbon particles. In the temperature reconstruction case, eight CCD cameras are located on the front, back, left and right surfaces of the cube with 0.4mx0.4mx0.4m size. The temperature reconstruction equations are ill-posed linear system of equations. LSQR (Least Square QR-factorization) and damping LSQR have been used for solving the ill-posed equations. For an assumed temperature profile, the numerical simulation results show the reconstruction errors are maintained at the lower levels under different measurement errors and temperature near the center of the cube can be reconstructed well even under large measurement errors.

Abstract:Thermograph can be used to measure the temperature distribution of solid surfaces accurately, but to flames, many factors, especial ly the emissivity determination, can introduce gross measurement errors. Therefo re, the effects of emissivity determination on flame temperature field measureme nt by a Thermography, were evaluated theoretically and experimentally in this pa per, and the experimental results of flame temperature distribution after emissi vity correction based on measurements of flame radiant spectra were given either . The results show that Thermography can be used to qualitatively visualize the flame thermal structure in real time and with many merits, such as intuit and mo re information, etc. But to quantitative measurement of flame temperature, the e missivity must be corrected by proper methods.

Abstract:A new approach to inverse radiation analysis is presented for non-intrusive 3-D flame temperature reconstruction using flame emission images from four CCD camera detectors installed on the furnace wall. The scattering from participating medium in the flame was considered by combining the discrete radiative transfer method with the discrete ordinate method. A modified minimum residual algorithm was employed to calculate the least squares solution of the ill-conditioned inverse problem. A numerical test problem simulating real temperature measurements in an industrial furnace was used to assess the performance of the proposed method. These assessments indicate that this method is capable of reconstructing 3-D temperature distributions fast and accurately, even with noisy flame emission data. Such a capability has potential in real-time temperature measurement for combustion optimization and pollution emission control.

Abstract:This paper presented a model for simultaneously measuring the two-dimensional temperature and particle concentration distribution from the images of the flame. In order to determine the relationship between a point in the three-dimensional space and its image in the camera, the optical image-formation process was analyzed. The inverse problem of the radiation transfer in the participating medium was studied. The mathematics method to simultaneously solve the temperature and the particle concentration was discussed. To validate the model presented in this paper, a test furnace with the fuels mixed by pulverized-coal and oil was set up. The temperature and particle concentration of a cross section were measured under different coal feed rates. The comparison between the measured temperature by the pyrometer and the calculated temperature according to the flame image proved that the two-dimensional distribution of temperature can be obtained accurately. The particle concentration distribution was reasonable under different cases.

Abstract:A new spectral-emittance method to modify RGB pyrometry is developed for the surface temperature measurements of dispersed chars in a Hencken flat-flame burner. Nikon D300s, with calibrated spectral response, was used as the detector for the measurement. First, we calculated an original lookup table for ratio temperature of the camera on the basis of the blackbody assumption. Second, 420/440 two-color pyrometry using an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) combined with two adjacent bandpass filters centered at 420 and 440 nm was adopted here for a verified comparison to RGB pyrometry. On the basis of the normalized spectral emission distribution of char particles in the visible light region (390-710 nm) acquired by an Ocean2000 spectrometer, a calibrated normalized spectral emissivity model of burning chars was built. Then, the lookup table of the Nikon camera was further modified by this calibrated spectral emissivity model, enabling better predictions on char particle temperatures in cases of all different ambient conditions. The measurement deviation can be effectively reduced from 4.2 to 1.7% under similar to 1800 K, from 9.5 to 2.2% under similar to 2200 K, and from 8.8 to 0.9% under similar to 2300 K.
Application of Two-dimensional Light Extinction Technique for Soot Concentration Measurement in an Axisymmetric Laminar Diffusion Flame

Abstract:A two-dimensional measurement system was designed and built based on light extinction with effective tomographic inversion algorithm for accurate measurement of soot concentration distribution in a co-flow laminar ethylene diffusion flame.It operated simply.A collimated light with brightness uniformity passing through the ethylene flame would image in the CCD.An anti-noise numerical simulation ensured the credibility of the inversion algorithm.Test results show that the maximum soot concentration is in the annular region of the flame.The soot concentration increases with flame height until reaches its maximum and then decreases till it vanishes at the visible flame tip.The results are in good agreement with those reported in the literature,indicating the present two-dimensional light extinction system is effective and correctly implemented.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for the simultaneous reconstruction of temperature and soot volume fraction distributions in axisymmetric flames. In the proposed method, the radiation temperature and emissivity are determined using a multi-wavelength method. Then, based on the decomposition of the emissivity, the soot volume fraction distribution is reconstructed. Accordingly, the temperature distribution is calculated using the reconstructed local radiation source terms under a single wavelength. Based on a correction formula proposed in this paper, a further correction process is conducted, and the soot volume fraction and temperature distributions are successively obtained. Simulations are conducted with the temperature and soot volume fraction distributions at two different heights from the flame burner of an axisymmetric ethylene laminar diffusion flame. In the simulations, normal random errors are superimposed, and the radiation temperature and emissivity are calculated based on the intensities at three wavelengths corresponding to the R, G, and B channels of color cameras. Good agreement with the assumed data is obtained, which verifies the performance of the proposed method. Additionally, comparison with the results obtained using the widely-used two-color reconstruction method indicates that the proposed method exhibits a more stable performance with smaller errors. Moreover, the proposed method can take advantage of measurement at multiple wavelengths. Based on the multi-wavelength data captured using a hyperspectral imaging device, the measurement results of an axisymmetric ethylene laminar diffusion flame using the proposed method are also presented.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of flame temperature by using bare thermocouples is a traditional and still a challenging problem. Three measurement methods, including the double- and triple-thermocouple correction methods and extrapolation method, have been developed to seek accurate gas temperatures, but the validity of these methods has been rarely evaluated for application in fire experiments. All the three methods use the temperature readings of multiple thermocouples with different bead diameters. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of validity for these methods by conducting fire temperature measurements. A turbulent propane pool fire was used. The temperatures along the fire plume centreline were measured at ten vertical heights of 10-55 cm, for which four thermocouples with different bead diameters were used at each height. Analysis shows that the flame turbulence imposes a significantly negative effect on the double- and triple-thermocouple correction methods. However, the extrapolation method can correct the fire gas temperature regardless of temperature pulsation related to flame turbulence. In addition, a new radiation model that incorporates the corrected flame temperature is proposed well against the radiant heat flux measurement. Moreover, it is found that the flame pulsation frequency can be roughly estimated by the temporal derivation of the corrected flame temperature.
