Abstract:Cu-zeolites are able to directly convert methane to methanol via a three-step process using O2 as oxidant. Among the different zeolite topologies, Cu-exchanged mordenite (MOR) shows the highest methanol yields, attributed to a preferential formation of active Cu-oxo species in its 8-MR pores. The presence of extra-framework or partially detached Al species entrained in the micropores of MOR leads to the formation of nearly homotopic redox active Cu-Al-oxo nanoclusters with the ability to activate CH4. Studies of the activity of these sites together with characterization by 27Al NMR and IR spectroscopy leads to the conclusion that the active species are located in the 8-MR side pockets of MOR, and it consists of two Cu ions and one Al linked by O. This Cu-Al-oxo cluster shows an activity per Cu in methane oxidation significantly higher than of any previously reported active Cu-oxo species. In order to determine unambiguously the structure of the active Cu-Al-oxo cluster, we combine experimental XANES of Cu K- and L-edges, Cu K-edge HERFD-XANES, and Cu K-edge EXAFS with TDDFT and AIMD-assisted simulations. Our results provide evidence of a [Cu2AlO3]2+ cluster exchanged on MOR Al pairs that is able to oxidize up to two methane molecules per cluster at ambient pressure.

Abstract:The stoichiometric conversion of methane to methanol by Cu-exchanged zeolites can be brought to highest yields by the presence of extraframework Al and high CH4 chemical potentials. Combining theory and experiments, the differences in chemical reactivity of monometallic Cu-oxo and bimetallic Cu-Al-oxo nanoclusters stabilized in zeolite mordenite (MOR) are investigated. Cu-L3 edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies, in combination with CH4 oxidation activity tests, support the presence of two types of active clusters in MOR and allow quantification of the relative proportions of each type in dependence of the Cu concentration. Ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) calculations and thermodynamic analyses indicate that the superior performance of materials enriched in Cu-Al-oxo clusters is related to the activity of two μ-oxo bridges in the cluster. Replacing H2O with ethanol in the product extraction step led to the formation of ethyl methyl ether, expanding this way the applicability of these materials for the activation and functionalization of CH4. We show that competition between different ion-exchanged metal-oxo structures during the synthesis of Cu-exchanged zeolites determines the formation of active species, and this provides guidelines for the synthesis of highly active materials for CH4 activation and functionalization.

Abstract:Cu-oxo nanoclusters in Cu-exchanged zeolites oxidize methane to methanol via a three-step process. Cuexchanged ferrierite shows high reactivity to this selective oxidation at both ambient and elevated methane pressures. The active sites are dimeric Cu clusters located in the eight-membered channels of ferrierite, containing two oxygen atoms with different reactivities. Combining in situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and Raman spectroscopy, it is shown that the active site is a [Cu2O2] 2+ cluster stabilized at pairs of negatively charged aluminum oxygen tetrahedra. This cluster is able to oxidize up to two methane molecules at elevated methane chemical potential.

Abstract:Several ceria‐zirconia supported mono and bi‐metallic transition metal oxide clusters containing Fe, Cu, and Ni are synthesized by dry impregnation. Through XRD, H 2 ‐TPR, NH 3 ‐TPD, pyridine adsorption followed by FTIR spectroscopy and XAS, the well‐dispersed nature of the transition metal oxide clusters is revealed, and the Lewis acidity of the catalysts is assessed. In‐situ FTIR spectroscopy is used to monitor the methane activation on catalyst surfaces. All catalysts activate methane at 250 °C forming methyl, alkyl, and methoxy species on the catalyst surface. By co‐feeding steam and oxygen together with methane, continuous direct oxidation of methane to methanol can be achieved, with the complete oxidation to CO 2 as the other reaction path. Methoxy species are found to be a key intermediate for methanol production. Lowering the methane conversion improves the methanol selectivity. By extrapolation, it is estimated that methanol selectivity close to unity can be achieved below a threshold of methane conversion at about 0.002%. The formation of CuO and NiO mixed metal oxides produces stronger Lewis acid sites and yields higher methanol selectivity.

Abstract:Mononuclear and dinuclear copper species were synthesized at the nodes of an NU-1000 metal-organic framework (MOF) via cation exchange and subsequent oxidation at 200 °C in oxygen. Copper-exchanged MOFs are active for selectively converting methane to methanol at 150-200 °C. At 150 °C and 1 bar methane, approximately a third of the copper centers are involved in converting methane to methanol. Methanol productivity increased by 3-4-fold and selectivity increased from 70% to 90% by increasing the methane pressure from 1 to 40 bar. Density functional theory showed that reaction pathways on various copper sites are able to convert methane to methanol, the copper oxyl sites with much lower free energies of activation. Combining studies of the stoichiometric activity with characterization by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory, we conclude that dehydrated dinuclear copper oxyl sites formed after activation at 200 °C are responsible for the activity.

Abstract:Abstract Selective conversion of methane (CH 4 ) into value-added chemicals represents a grand challenge for the efficient utilization of rising hydrocarbon sources. We report here dimeric copper centers supported on graphitic carbon nitride (denoted as Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 ) as advanced catalysts for CH 4 partial oxidation. The copper-dimer catalysts demonstrate high selectivity for partial oxidation of methane under both thermo- and photocatalytic reaction conditions, with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) being used as the oxidizer, respectively. In particular, the photocatalytic oxidation of CH 4 with O 2 achieves >10% conversion, and >98% selectivity toward methyl oxygenates and a mass-specific activity of 1399.3 mmol g Cu −1 h −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that the high reactivity of Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 can be ascribed to symphonic mechanisms among the bridging oxygen, the two copper sites and the semiconducting C 3 N 4 substrate, which do not only facilitate the heterolytic scission of C-H bond, but also promotes H 2 O 2 and O 2 activation in thermo- and photocatalysis, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract The direct oxidation of methane to methanol (MTM) remains a significant challenge in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high dissociation energy of the C-H bond in methane and the high desorption energy of methanol. In this work, we demonstrate a breakthrough in selective MTM by achieving a high methanol space-time yield of 2678 mmol molCu−1 h−1 with 93% selectivity in a continuous methane-steam reaction at 400 °C. The superior performance is attributed to the confinement effect of 6-membered ring (6MR) voids in SSZ-13 zeolite, which host isolated Cu-OH single sites. Our results provide a deeper understanding of the role of Cu-zeolites in continuous methane-steam to methanol conversion and pave the way for further improvement.

Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.

Cu nanoclusters have been predicted by theoretical calculations to improve methane selectivity. Direct electrochemical reduction of Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) results in large-size Cu nanoparticles which favor multi-carbon products. This study concerns an electrochemical oxidation-reduction method to prepare Cu clusters from MOFs. The derived Cu clusters exhibit a faradaic efficiency of 51.2 % for CH4 with a partial current density of >150 mA cm(-2). High-resolution microscopy, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and a range of ex situ spectroscopies indicate that the distinctive CH4 selectivity is due to the sub-nanometer size of the derived materials, as well as stabilization of the clusters by residual ligands of the pristine MOF. This work offers a new insight into steering product selectivity of Cu by an electrochemical processing method.

Abstract:Catalytically converting CH4 to chemicals and fuels is of paramount importance but remains a major challenge to simultaneously obtain high activity and selectivity. Here, we report Cu1/ZSM-5 single atom catalyst is highly active (C1 oxygenates productivity of 4800 μmol⋅gcat−1 at 50 °C and 12,000 μmol⋅gcat-1 at 70 °C within 30 min) and selective (C1 oxygenates selectivity of 99 % at 50 °C) for direct CH4 oxidation, comparable to most of those state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. The combined DFT calculation, electronic microscope, X-ray absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance results confirm that each isolated Cu atom stabilized by four O moieties on the ZSM-5 support possesses uniform Cu1-O4 entity as active site and preferentially activates CH4 instead of CH3OH that is advantageous for highly selective C1 oxygenates production, especially for methanol. Our molecular-level finding on the atomic structure of Cu active site paves the way to design better catalysts for methane conversion.

Abstract:Direct and selective oxidation of CH4 with dioxygen to methanol is a "dream reaction" in modern catalysis yet remains a great challenge. Here, we report that TiO2 loaded with dual cocatalysts, that is, nanometals and cobalt oxide (CoOx) nanoclusters, is capable of selectively catalyzing CH4 to CH3OH at room temperature under photoexcitation using abundant and inexpensive O2 as an oxidant. The best activity for the formation of the primary products, CH3OOH and CH3OH, is up to 50.8 μmol for 2 h with 95% selectivity. Mechanistic studies elucidate that the superior activity and selectivity result from the synergistic effect of nanometals and CoOx. Nanometals enhance CH4 conversion by promoting the separation of the photoexcited electron and the reduction of O2. The CoOx mediates a mild CH4 oxidation process by suppressing the formation of highly oxidative •OH radicals that can further oxidize CH3OH to HCHO and CO2, thereby preserving a high selectivity toward oxygenated products. Abstract:The partial oxidation of methane to methanol catalyzed by Cu-exchanged zeolites involves at present a three-step procedure that requires changing reaction conditions along the catalytic cycle. In this work we present an alternative catalytic cycle for selective methane conversion to methanol using as active species small Cu 5 clusters supported on CHA zeolite. Periodic DFT calculations show that molecular O 2 is easily activated on Cu 5 clusters producing bi-coordinated O atoms able to dissociate homolytically a CH bond from CH 4 and to react with the radical-like non-adsorbed methyl intermediate formed producing methanol, while competitive overoxidation to CO 2 is energetically disfavored. The present mechanistic study opens a new avenue to design catalytic materials based on their ability to stabilize radical species.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CH4 oxidation to CH3OH emerges as a promising strategy to sustainably utilize natural gas and mitigate the greenhouse effect. However, there remains a significant challenge for the synthesis of methanol by using O2 at low temperature. Inspired by the catalytic structure in soluble methane monooxygenase (MMO) and the corresponding reaction mechanism, we prepared a biomimetic photocatalysts with the decoration of Fe2O3 nanocluster and satellite Fe single atom immobilized on carbon nitride. The catalyst demonstrates an excellent CH3OH productivity of 5.02 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 with methanol selectivity of 98.5%. Mechanism studies reveal that the synergy between Fe2O3 nanocluster and Fe single atom establishes a dual-Fe site as MMO for O2 activation and subsequent CH4 partial oxidation. Moreover, the light excitation of Fe2O3 nanoclusters with a relative narrow bandgap could deliver the electrons and protons to atomic Fe that facilitating the oxygen reduction kinetics for the robust of methanol synthesis.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane into methanol is an attractive strategy for the production of manifold value-added chemicals. Herein, we investigated the conversion of methane to methanol over CuO supported on the rutile metal oxides (TiO2, SnO2 and RuO2) based on results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the oxygen site of the supported CuO exhibits the characteristics of a radical anion. This radical anionic oxygen site enables homolytic C-H cleavage by abstracting the hydrogen atom, resulting in a CH3 radical. The CH3 radical captured by the Cu site next to the radical anionic oxygen enables the coupling of CH3 and OH to form a C-O bond, resulting in methanol. The free energy of activation for C-H activation and C-O formation were found to correlate linearly with the p band center of the radical anionic oxygen, but the slope has the opposite signs, i.e., a lower free energy of activation for C-H scission corresponds to a higher free energy formation for C-O formation. Among rutile oxides studied, SnO2 offers a balanced reactivity for C-H activation and C-O formation. These findings demonstrate the presence of the radical anionic oxygen on rutile oxide-supported CuO catalyst and their crucial role in regulating the reactivity for direct methane to methanol conversion. The mechanistic insights from this study will benefit the development of supported copper oxide catalysts for effective methane conversion.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane to methanol is a dream reaction of direct methane functionalization, which remains a key challenge in catalysis and a hot topic of controversy. Herein, we report the water-involved methane-selective catalytic oxidation by dioxygen over copper zeolites. At 573 K, a state-of-the-art methanol space-time yield of 543 mmol/molCu/h with methanol selectivity of 91% is achieved with a Cu–CHA catalyst. Temperature-programmed surface reactions with isotope labeling suggest water as the apparent oxygen and hydrogen source of hydroxyl in methanol. Spectroscopic analyses reveal the fast redox cycle of Cu2+-Cu+-Cu2+ during methane-selective oxidation, which is closely related to the high catalytic activity of Cu–CHA. Density functional theory calculations suggest that both CuOH monomer and dimer in Cu–CHA can catalyze the selective oxidation of methane to methanol with Cu–OOH as the key reaction intermediate, and meanwhile, various copper sites may undergo interconversion under reaction conditions.

Abstract:AbstractDirect photocatalytic oxidation of methane to liquid oxygenated products is a sustainable strategy for methane valorization at room temperature. However, in this reaction, noble metals are generally needed to function as cocatalysts for obtaining adequate activity and selectivity. Here, we report atomically dispersed nickel anchored on a nitrogen‐doped carbon/TiO2composite (Ni−NC/TiO2) as a highly active and selective catalyst for photooxidation of CH4to C1 oxygenates with O2as the only oxidant. Ni−NC/TiO2exhibits a yield of C1 oxygenates of 198 μmol for 4 h with a selectivity of 93 %, exceeding that of most reported high‐performance photocatalysts. Experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that the single‐atom Ni−NC sites not only enhance the transfer of photogenerated electrons from TiO2to isolated Ni atoms but also dominantly facilitate the activation of O2to form the key intermediate ⋅OOH radicals, which synergistically lead to a substantial enhancement in both activity and selectivity.

Abstract:Direct oxidation of methane to valuable chemicals is a great challenge as catalysts with both high activity and selectivity for the activation of inert C–H bonds are required. Here, we report the highly efficient and selective photo-oxidation of methane to ethane with dioxygen in a flow reactor using a Au nanoparticle (NP) loaded ZnO/TiO2 hybrid. An ethane production rate of over 5,000 μmol g−1 h−1 with 90% selectivity is achieved, which is more than one order of magnitude higher than the state-of-the-art photocatalytic systems. Detailed characterizations and theoretical studies show that the formation of heterojunctions between ZnO and TiO2 leads to enhanced photocatalytic activity, while maintaining high selectivity owing to the weak overoxidation ability of the main component ZnO. Moreover, the Au cocatalyst enables the facile desorption of methyl (CH3) species as •CH3 radicals in the gas phase, thereby facilitating C2H6 formation and inhibiting overoxidation of CH4 to CO2.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of methane into methanol is of paramount importance but poses significant challenges in achieving high methanol productivity and selectivity, especially under mild reaction conditions. We show that a Cu-modified monomeric Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst is a highly efficient material for the direct conversion of methane into methanol in the liquid phase using H2O2 as an oxidant at low temperatures, which exhibits an excellent methanol productivity of 431 molMeOH·mol–1Fe·h–1 (with a methanol selectivity of ∼80% over the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst). Combining the control experiments and comprehensive characterization results by among others, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance as well as density functional theory calculations, we found that Cu species in the Cu-Fe(2/0.1)/ZSM-5 catalyst play a pivotal role in facilitating the formation of •OH radicals, which quickly react with •CH3 radicals to form CH3OH.
