Abstract:We report exact time-dependent and time-independent quantum mechanical studies of the title reaction on an accurate ab initio potential energy surface of Xu et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 2005, 122, 24305). The J = 0 reaction probabilities for several reactant states show sharp resonance structures superimposed on relatively low backgrounds, and they are remarkably different from existing quantum results on an earlier potential energy surface (DMBE-IV). The new findings reported here suggest that our current understanding of this important reaction might require significant revision.
A New Ab Initio Based Global HOOH(13A″) Potential Energy Surface for the O(3P) + H2O(X1A1) ↔ OH(X2Π) + OH(X2Π) Reaction

Abstract:An accurate global potential energy surface is developed for the title reaction by fitting more than 36 000 of ab initio points at the CCSD(T)/AVTZ level using the permutation invariant polynomial method. The canonical rate constants for both the forward and reverse directions of the title reaction are determined on the new potential energy surface and the agreement with experiment is satisfactory. In addition, the dynamics of the forward reaction is investigated with the quasi-classical trajectory method. It is found that this direct abstraction reaction has a backward bias in its product angular distribution, consistent with a direct rebound mechanism. The OH product newly formed by the reaction exhibits a bimodal rotational state distribution, due apparently to secondary collisions with the slowly recoiling spectator OH product.
Anomalous Kinetics of the Reaction Between OH and HO2 on an Accurate Triplet State Potential Energy Surface

Abstract:The reaction OH + HO2→ H2O + O2 is of great significance in interstellar media, the atmosphere, and combustion. In addition, it presents a prototypical reaction between two non-atom radical species. However, the temperature dependence of its rate coefficients has been debated for several decades. In this work, the rate coefficients are revisited by the quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) approach. To this end, a globally accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface of the ground triplet state for the title reaction is constructed using the permutation invariant polynomial-neural network (PIP-NN) method based on 108 000 points calculated at the level of CCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ, in which particular attention is paid to the initial guess in the preceding Hartree-Fock procedure to obtain reliable ab initio energies. The QCT rate coefficients are compared to available experimental and theoretical results. It has been found that not only the trend, but also the magnitude, i.e. the large negative temperature dependence at low temperatures, and slightly positive temperature dependence at high temperatures, are consistent with some experiments.

Abstract:The lowest triplet state of the H2O2 system features multiple reaction channels, including several relevant to the combustion of H-2. To accurately map out the global potential energy surface, similar to 28 000 geometries were sampled over a large configuration space including all important asymptotes, and electronic energies at these points were calculated at the level of the explicitly correlated version of the multi-reference configuration interaction (MRCI-F12) method. A new multi-channel global potential energy surface was constructed by fitting the ab initio data set using a permutation invariant polynomial-neural network method, resulting in a total root mean square fitting error of only 6.7 meV (0.15 kcal mol(-1)). Various kinetics and dynamical properties of several relevant reactions were calculated on the new MRCI potential energy surface, and compared with the available experimental results.

Abstract:We survey the recent advances in theoretical understanding of quantum state resolved dynamics, using the title reactions as examples. It is shown that the progress was made possible by major developments in two areas. First, an accurate analytical representation of many high-level ab initio points over a large configuration space can now be made with high fidelity and the necessary permutation symmetry. The resulting full-dimensional global potential energy surfaces enable dynamical calculations using either quasi-classical trajectory or more importantly quantum mechanical methods. The second advance is the development of accurate and efficient quantum dynamical methods, which are necessary for providing a reliable treatment of quantum effects in reaction dynamics such as tunneling, resonances, and zero-point energy. The powerful combination of the two advances has allowed us to achieve a quantitatively accurate characterization of the reaction dynamics, which unveiled rich dynamical features such as steric steering, strong mode specificity, and bond selectivity. The dependence of reactivity on reactant modes can be rationalized by the recently proposed sudden vector projection model, which attributes the mode specificity and bond selectivity to the coupling of reactant modes with the reaction coordinate at the relevant transition state. The deeper insights provided by these theoretical studies have advanced our understanding of reaction dynamics to a new level.

Abstract:The lowest two electronic states of FH2O both correlate adiabatically to the F(2P) + H2O and HF + OH(X2Π) asymptotes, thus facilitating the title reaction. To understand the reaction dynamics, global potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the two electronic states are constructed based on more than 30,000 points at the Davidson corrected multi-state multi-reference configuration interaction level. Spin-orbit corrections at the complete active space self-consistent field level are included in both PESs. The spin-orbit corrected ground state PES retains a relatively deep pre-reaction van der Waals well and a "reactant-like" transition state with a classical barrier of 4.2 kcal∕mol. The spin-orbit corrected excited state PES has, on the other hand, a very shallow pre-reaction van der Waals complex and a much higher (17.6 kcal∕mol) classical barrier, also featuring a "reactant-like" transition state. The adiabatic F + H2O → HF + OH reaction dynamics on these two PESs are investigated using both quasi-classical trajectory and full-dimensional wave packet methods. Both reaction pathways produce internally excited HF and relatively cold OH, consistent with a direct abstraction mechanism. In addition, the spin-orbit corrections on the ground electronic state have a limited impact on the dynamics.

Abstract:Calculations for the cumulative reaction probability N(E) (for J=0) and the thermal rate constant k(T) of the H+CH4→H2+CH3 reaction are presented. Accurate electronic structure calculations and a converged Shepard-interpolation approach are used to construct a potential energy surface which is specifically designed to allow the precise calculation of k(T) and N(E). Accurate quantum dynamics calculations employing flux correlation functions and multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree wave packet propagation compute N(E) and k(T) based on this potential energy surface. The present work describes in detail the various convergence test performed to investigate the accuracy of the calculations at each step. These tests demonstrate the predictive power of the present calculations. In addition, approximate approaches for reaction rate calculations are discussed. A quite accurate approximation can be obtained from a potential energy surface which includes only interpolation points on the minimum energy path.
