Abstract:Dr. Xiankang Dou () was appointed the President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in April 2023. As a distinguished researcher specializing in studying the middle and upper atmosphere of earth, Dr. Dou had served as the President of Wuhan University during 2016 to 2022 and was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2017. At his new post in NSFC, Dr. Dou's first priorities include curtailing personal favors in the review process (often known as 'say hello' with an intent to lobby), reforming the scoring and renewing mechanisms for the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (DYS), opening the channel for DYS applications to researchers from Hong Kong and Macau, extending the age limit of female scientists for applying for DYS, and initiating funding programs for outstanding doctoral and undergraduate students. Recently, National Science Review (NSR) had an interview with Dr. Dou. He believes only through reform and experimentation can NSFC make steady progress in its efforts to support research of basic science and applied basic science in China and to cultivate promising scholars.

Abstract:Innovation is the primary driving force of development. Carrying forward the spirit of science, the Department of Chemical Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) launched a series of measures to stimulate management innovation and push science funds reform for chemical sciences in China, which has opened a new chapter of its work during the 13th Five-Year Plan. This article overviews the progress in working style, academic ethics, discipline layout and fund allocation of Department of Chemical Sciences, NSFC and propose future working plans.

Abstract:Owning to the unique structure, the excellent physical and chemical properties, the superstrong mechanics performances and so on, carbon nanotubes had been attracting the interest of all over the world. As the basis of carbon nanotubes, single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs) have the better potential prospect in many fields, such as electron nano-devices, single electron devices, energy storage materials and so on. In this paper, the recent developments in the synthesis of SWCNTs were reviewed briefly, which included arc discharge, laser ablation, chemical vapor deposition and so on. At the same time, the crucial factors for the growth of SWCNTs were discussed.

Abstract:In order to optimize the layout of disciplines, the Department of Chemical Sciences of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has initiated a reform of grant application code of B01 Synthetic Chemistry, which will be launched in 2021. Synthetic Chemistry is to create new molecules and substances, which provides the objects and research models for physical sciences; it also contributes in life sciences and applied sciences with fundamental knowledge and synthetic tools. The 14th Five-Year Plan & Mid-long Term objectives and development strategies of synthetic chemistry are thus briefly described herein, with the purpose of providing guidelines to the applicants.

Abstract:In 2005, the Science magazine, in commemorating the 125th anniversary of its founding, proposed 25 most challenging scientific issues in the future. One of the issues, "How far can we push chemical self-assembly?" has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. During the 11th Five Year Plan period, NSFC convened scientists from various fields and proposed a major research project, "Controllable self-assembly system and its functionalization". Since the implementation of this project, Chinese scientists have developed and recognized a variety of noncovalent interactions, constructed numerous assembly building blocks with the "Chinese label", established a new assembly method similar to an organic "name reaction", realized the functions of multi-component and multi-level assemblies, and constructed a batch of controllable self-assembly systems having scientific importance and potential practical value. They have achieved great leap forward from following to original innovation, and brought the research of chemical self-assembly in China to move forward to the center of international stage. In this study, we examined the overall scientific goals, general layout of the plan, and ideas for implementation of the major research program "Controllable Self-Assembly System and its Functionalization", as well as an array of significant research accomplishments made possible through the funding received by the program.

Abstract:<p indent="0mm">In 2018, the Department of Chemical Sciences of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) reorganized and optimized the disciplines, which leads to the establishment of a new discipline of Synthetic Chemistry with a subcode of B01. Abstract:With the advancement of modern science and technology, large scientific facilities are increasingly oriented toward demand and application, and can be used for basic research as well as serving multiple disciplines. Developing large scientific facilities and related analytical technologies enhances understanding of large scientific facilities and popularizes their application in research across multiple disciplines. The combination of light or neutron sources from large scientific facilities and advanced analytical technologies can be achieved for materials structure information, dynamics study of chemical reactions, high dissociation of biomolecules, 3D visualization of energy materials or biological samples, etc . We first introduce the progress of domestic large scientific facilities of synchrotron radiation (SR) and free electron lasers (FELs) with different wavelengths and neutron sources. We further discuss the comparison between Chinese and typical foreign facilities in X-ray radiation from X-ray tubes, synchrotrons, X-ray FELs, and neutron sources based on physical parameters of light and neutron sources. In addition, we focus on the technological progress and perspectives combined with advanced X-ray radiation and neutron sources of large scientific facilities in China, especially in the nanoscience fields of energy catalysis and biological science. We hope that this roadmap will provide references on technology and methods to experimental users, as well as prospects for future development of technologies based on large research infrastructure facilities. Comprehensive studies and guidelines for basic research to practical application in various disciplines can be made with the assistance of large scientific facilities.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. And numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about the applications and funding.METHODS: Annual reports of 2014-2018 were searched respectively from the NSFC official website. Further analysis was made to discover the regularity and trend of projects funded by NSFC.RESULTS: The funding by NSFC continuously increased rapidly since its establishment. Recently, the annual amount, which is still on the rise, has reached more than 20 billion CNY. From the year 2014 to 2018 multifarious projects types were set up by NSFC to support scientific research of different level and multiple dimensions.CONCLUSIONS: In the past years, NSFC had provides strong support to basic scientific research in all fronts and provided a mechanism for fair competition.

Abstract:Last July 2–4, we had a successful meeting—the 4 th Sino-US Nano Workshop —at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, Anhui. This event brought together more than 40 scientists both from the United States and China to exchange information related to nanomaterials research. Our guests also include Dr. David Flanagan, the Editor in Chief of Advanced Functional Materials , who gave a wonderful talk on writing and publishing of scientifi c papers. We had a three-full-day program devoted to the synthesis of functional nanomaterials and their applications in areas as diverse as biomedical research, energy, electronics, photonics, and photovoltaics.

Abstract:Based on publications indexed in the Web of Science, the current study focused on internationally collaborated publications and publications acknowledging government funding of developing and developed countries including China, the US, Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa, and Brazil. Specific focus is placed on national funding agencies (i.e., focal agencies) supporting competitive research in science. The focal agencies of the six countries include the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), German Research Foundation, the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF), and National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq). Results show that different countries vary in arrangement of government funding sources in support of competitive research projects. China and Brazil are centralized to the NSFC and CNPq, whereas the remaining four countries have relatively decentralized sources. The six focal national funding agencies of the current study are more efficient than non-focal agencies in raising citation impact, with the NWO, NSF, and NSFC perform better than non-focal agencies of corresponding countries. International collaboration improves citation impact, with the developing countries benefit more. Authorship (first or corresponding authorship) also plays a role in international collaboration. Collaboration led by authors from developed countries has a positive effect whereas that led by authors from developing countries usually have negative effects on citation impact. Interaction between funding and collaboration may have results different from those when these two factors are considered separately, which suggests being cautious while discussing effects of either of the two factors.

Abstract:While extensive research has delved into various facets of science funding outputs and the determinants of funding approval, prevailing methodologies predominantly rely on descriptive statistics or regression analyses . These approaches often miss a holistic view that integrates the interplay of multiple influential factors. In this study, we leverage the scientific research productivity model to introduce the Institution-Capability-Demographics framework, encompassing three pivotal dimensions: institutional characteristics, individual capabilities, and individual demographics. Adopting a configuration perspective, we scrutinize the synergistic effects of these dimensions on the time-to-win in science funding applications. Our empirical analysis draws from data of 72 young scholars affiliated with the Youth Program for Library and Information Science (LIS) of the NSFC, all of whom secured funding between 2003 and 2019. Through the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), this study delineates four distinct mechanisms that expedite the application process for the NSFC's Youth Program: demographic-capability-institution synergy, capability-centric balance, demographic-capability harmony, and capability-institution equilibrium. The findings elucidate the intricate interdependencies of factors influencing the time-to-win in science funding, offering valuable guidance for science fund managers and fostering the growth of emerging scholars.

Abstract:Objective To explore the management model of scientific research projects based on the application of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).Methods We retrospectively analyzed the NSFC funding of our hospital during 2009-2017.Results Our hospital sets up the pre—experiment special project of NSFC and "full—time" policy,development translational medicine research center platform,introduce and train scientific talents,strength the delicacy management of scientific research and so on.Through the above measurements,NSFC funding in our hospital was significantly improved.The number of projects approved increased from 1 to 23,and the amount approved increased from 300 thousand to 21 million 350 thousand yuan during the eight yesrs.Conclusions The policy,platform,personnel and delicacy management have effectively improved the quality and quantity of NSFC,and promote the sustainable development of the hospital science and technology.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) plays an important role in supporting scientific research. The Major Program is one of the most important types as it improves the capability of indigenous innovation in China's basic research efforts. Thus, numerous scientists and researchers are concerned about its application and funding aspects.METHODS: The information and data of the Major Program were collected from guide books and annual reports released between the years 2010 to 2018 via the NSFC official website. We conducted further analysis to discover any regularities and tendencies.RESULTS: From 2010 to 2018, a total of 21 areas in the field of health science were funded by the NSFC and eventually 87 projects were approved, totaling 32.8 million CNY. The applicants funded were from 43 host institutions, 70 were males and 17 were females, and the applicants were aged between of 35 and 77 years. Of all the applicants funded, 86 had senior title while only 1 had deputy senior title. The collaboration of institutions was common in the applications.CONCLUSIONS: Several characteristics of the Major Program could be found based on the analysis, which may be beneficial for the applicants in the future.

Abstract:Since 2018, the National Natural Science Foundation of China（NSFC） has promoted the systematic reform of science funds. As a reform pilot, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of the NSFC led the reform of proposal review classification to optimize the layout of discipline funding and formed the 2020 application code configuration through strategic research and discussion. The main structure of atmospheric science contains three categories of sublevel codes:（i） subdisciplines;（ii） supporting technologies; and（iii） development fields, totaling 15 sublevel codes. They also organized experts to systematically sort out and analyze the research directions and keywords of each sublevel code, and after three years of implementation and optimization, they developed the current version. The five research directions and keywords of earth system model development（D0512）, a second-level code of the atmospheric science discipline of the National NSFC, are systematically interpreted. This paper introduces the overarching background of D0512’s setup, the overall framework of the research directions and keywords of D0512, and the specific considerations for keywords. The frequency and research hotspots of all the keywords in different directions during the last five years are also analyzed and discussed using the Web of Science database. The existing keywords are found to be reasonable, although there is room for improvement. To enhance visibility and attract more research proposals, the keywords must be constantly modified and updated. There are also suggestions for keyword selection and optimization. It is hoped that the new application code will promote the progress of earth system model development in China.
