Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.

Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:The International Crop Science Congress (ICSC) is a regularly held event allowing crop scientists to integrate current knowledge into a global context and international applications. The 7th ICSC was held on August 14–19, 2016 in Beijing, China, with the theme “Crop Science: Innovation and Sustainability”. As a companion production for this great congress, the nine papers collected in this special issue feature important fields of crop science in China. This editorial first briefly introduces the 7th ICSC, followed by a brief discussion of the current status of, constraints to, and innovations in Chinese agriculture and crop science. Finally, the main scientific points of the papers published in this special issue are surveyed, covering important advances in hybrid rice breeding, minor cereals, food legumes, rapeseed, crop systems, crop management, cotton, genomics-based germplasm research, and QTL mapping. In a section describing future prospects, it is indicated that China faces a full transition from traditional to modern agriculture and crop science.

Abstract:The continuously expanding urban environment introduces a significant amount of both physical and digital infrastructure. The accompanying solution that collects environmental big data through the Internet of Things (IoT) holds great promise, opening up new opportunities as well as challenges. On one hand, billions of sensors and devices continuously collect, process, and transmit data. The data volume poses the challenge for supporting the decision-making in an automatic and intelligent way. On the other hand, the dynamism of data, the complexity of the environment, and the diversity of tasks also set the barrier to the intelligent processing paradigm of smart infrastructure. Fortunately, recent advancements in AI technologies offer cost-effective solutions that are capable of substantially improving modern metropolitan smart infrastructure. This special issue focuses smart sensors, smart communications, smart analytics, and applications for smart infrastructure, introducing the relevant background and discussing potential beneficial technical routes. This special issue has collected seven excellent articles recognized by the reviewers and highly recommended by the editors.

Abstract:Nowadays, a new intelligence structure known as the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) comes into play. Broadly speaking, AIoT is a fusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) in practical applications. It applies AI to the edge and gives devices the ability to understand the data, observe the environment around them, and decide what to do best. However, the link among cloud, edge, blockchain, 5G, and AI poses many challenges that call for collaborative approaches and rethinking of the entire architecture, communication, and processing to meet requirements in latency, reliability, and so on. Abstract:The articles in this special section focus on computational intelligence for big social data analytics. In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on emerging computational intelligent techniques for decision making with Big Data in uncertain environments. Decision making in a big-data environment poses many challenges because of the high dimensional, heterogeneous, complex, unstructured, and unpredictable characteristics of the data which often suffer from different kinds of uncertainty. The uncertainty in the data may arise due to many factors including missing values, imprecise measurements, changes in process characteristics during the data generation period, lack of appropriate monitoring of data measurement process to name a few. Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems usually generate a large amount of unstructured and heterogeneous data demanding specialized techniques for data analytics. Thus, decision making in such an environment poses significant challenges and often demands new and innovative design techniques and algorithms for decision making.

Abstract:Digital agriculture has the promise to transform agricultural throughput. It can do this by applying data science and engineering for mapping input factors to crop throughput, while bounding the available resources. In addition, as the data volumes and varieties increase with the increase in sensor deployment in agricultural fields, data engineering techniques will also be instrumental in collection of distributed data as well as distributed processing of the data. These have to be done such that the latency requirements of the end users and applications are satisfied. Understanding how farm technology and big data can improve farm productivity can significantly increase the world's food production by 2050 in the face of constrained arable land and with the water levels receding. While much has been written about digital agriculture's potential, little is known about the economic costs and benefits of these emergent systems. In particular, the on-farm decision making processes, both in terms of adoption and optimal implementation, have not been adequately addressed. For example, if some algorithm needs data from multiple data owners to be pooled together, that raises the question of data ownership. This paper is the first one to bring together the important questions that will guide the end-to-end pipeline for the evolution of a new generation of digital agricultural solutions, driving the next revolution in agriculture and sustainability under one umbrella.

Abstract:In recent years, the explosive development of mobile communications and networking, together with the wave of Internet of Things (IoT), has led to super-complex systems, which are difficult to model and manage. At the same time, such systems are generating a large amount of data on a real-time basis, from both the user and network sides. How to utilize such data to relieve the dependence on restrictive, sometimes even unrealistic, system models are the key leading to more efficient and effective future networks, especially when under various resource constraints as in IoT systems. Fortunately, recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), empowered by modern machine learning algorithms, have demonstrated remarkable success in a variety of fields and are stimulating numerous data-driven approaches as well as applications. Combining the availability of big data in complex IoT communication networks and the recent advancements in AI, it now comes the time to renovate how we resolve network management issues to more efficiently and effectively fulfill the dynamic demands of network subscribers, especially in the presence of stringent network resource constraints. With the fuel (IoT data) and the engine (AI), data-driven network management will enable us to dynamically and adaptively meet the spatio-temporal network demands in the most resource-aware and resource-smart manner.

Abstract:Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can harness the immense amount of operational data from clouds to services, to social and communication networks. In the era of data science and connected devices of all varieties, Intelligence have found ways to improve operations and management of next generation networks, systems, and services. Further research is therefore needed to understand and improve the potential and suitability of ML/AI in the context of network, system, and service operations and management. This will provide deeper understanding and better decision making based on largely collected and available operational and management data. It will also present opportunities for improving ML/AI algorithms on aspects such as reliability, dependability, and scalability, as well as demonstrate the benefits of these methods in control and management systems. Moreover, there is an opportunity to define novel platforms that can harness the vast operational data and advance ML/AI algorithms to drive management decisions in open and highly programmable networks, clouds, and data centers.
