Abstract:The exceptional optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are presumed to arise, at least in part, from the peculiar interplay between the inorganic metal-halide sublattice and the atomic or molecular cations enclosed in the cage voids. The latter can exhibit a roto-translative dynamics, which is shown here to be at the origin of the structural behavior of MHPs as a function of temperature, pressure and composition. The application of high hydrostatic pressure allows for unraveling the nature of the interaction between both sublattices, characterized by the simultaneous action of hydrogen bonding and steric hindrance. In particular, we find that under the conditions of unleashed cation dynamics, the key factor that determines the structural stability of MHPs is the repulsive steric interaction rather than hydrogen bonding. Taking as example the results from pressure and temperature-dependent photoluminescence and Raman experiments on MAPbBr$_3$ but also considering the pertinent MHP literature, we provide a general picture about the relationship between the crystal structure and the presence or absence of cationic dynamic disorder. The reason for the structural sequences observed in MHPs with increasing temperature, pressure, A-site cation size or decreasing halide ionic radius is found principally in the strengthening of the dynamic steric interaction with the increase of the dynamic disorder. In this way, we have deepened our fundamental understanding of MHPs; knowledge that could be coined to improve performance in future optoelectronic devices based on this promising class of semiconductors.

High-Pressure Single-Crystal Structures of 3D Lead-Halide Hybrid Perovskites and Pressure Effects on their Electronic and Optical Properties

Abstract:We report the first high-pressure single-crystal structures of hybrid perovskites. The crystalline semiconductors (MA)PbX3 (MA = CH3NH3 (+), X = Br(-) or I(-)) afford us the rare opportunity of understanding how compression modulates their structures and thereby their optoelectronic properties. Using atomic coordinates obtained from high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction we track the perovskites' precise structural evolution upon compression. These structural changes correlate well with pressure-dependent single-crystal photoluminescence (PL) spectra and high-pressure bandgaps derived from density functional theory. We further observe dramatic piezochromism where the solids become lighter in color and then transition to opaque black with compression. Indeed, electronic conductivity measurements of (MA)PbI3 obtained within a diamond-anvil cell show that the material's resistivity decreases by 3 orders of magnitude between 0 and 51 GPa. The activation energy for conduction at 51 GPa is only 13.2(3) meV, suggesting that the perovskite is approaching a metallic state. Furthermore, the pressure response of mixed-halide perovskites shows new luminescent states that emerge at elevated pressures. We recently reported that the perovskites (MA)Pb(Br x I1-x )3 (0.2 < x < 1) reversibly form light-induced trap states, which pin their PL to a low energy. This may explain the low voltages obtained from solar cells employing these absorbers. Our high-pressure PL data indicate that compression can mitigate this PL redshift and may afford higher steady-state voltages from these absorbers. These studies show that pressure can significantly alter the transport and thermodynamic properties of these technologically important semiconductors.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites (PVKs) have demonstrated their potential in photovoltaics in terms of higher photovoltaic efficiency, aiming to achieve the Shockly-Quieser limit of a single-junction solar cell. Understanding the photo-optical and structural properties of PVKs is crucial to further improving their photovoltaic efficiency. Defects-free PVKs with a suitable energy bandgap (E-BG ~ 1.34 eV) are desirable to capture most of the solar radiations; however, the E-BG of the state-of-the-art PVKs is not the ideal one. Compositional engineering offers E-BG tunability but decreases carrier lifetime and increases material instability. The application of hydrostatic pressure is a green route, which initiates structural changes in the PVKs and tunes their E-BG, leading to the emergence of interesting material properties, including piezochromism, metallization, photoresponsivity, and structural stability. Therefore, understanding the interplay between pressure-induced electronic and structural changes is crucial. Herein, the pressure-induced modifications in structural and optoelectronic properties are elaborated. Particularly, pressure-induced properties in single crystals, lower-dimensional PVKs, and all inorganic PVKs are comprehended. Moreover, PVK amorphization and strain-induced properties of various PVK materials are also summarized. The review is concluded with an outlook discussing the challenges associated with the pressure induction on PVK material and our perspective to resolve these issues and future work.

Abstract:Pressure-induced electronic structure transition from insulating phase to metal state is a potential new paradigm for halide perovskites. The metallization based on these materials may afford a novel motif toward realizing new electronic properties even superconductivity phenomenon. Herein, how static compression modulates the crystal and electronic structure of typical perovskite semiconductors cesium lead iodine (CsPbI3) by both experimental and theoretical studies is reported. The comprehensive studies discover the insulator-metal transition of CsPbI3 at 39.3 GPa, and reveal the key information behind the electronic transition. The perovskite's precise structural evolution is tracked upon compression, from orthorhombic Pnma phase to monoclinic C2/m structure before the metallic transition. More interestingly, the C2/m phase has the most distorted octahedra and the shortest Pb-I bond length relative to the average bond length that is ever reported in a halide perovskite structure. The electronic transition stems from the structural changes accompanied by the anomalously self-distorted octahedra. These studies show that pressure can significantly alter the structural and electronic properties of these technologically important perovskites.
Lattice and Electronic Structural Evolutions in Compressed Multilayer MnPS3

Abstract:MnPS3, a novel ternary-layered material, hasattractedextensive attention in materials, physics, and chemistry owing toits excellent electrical transport and photoelectric properties. Pressureis a useful technique to explore unprecedented phenomena and propertiesin condensed matter. In this study, combining high-pressure Ramanspectroscopy, high-pressure absorption spectroscopy measurements,and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced lattice andelectronic structural evolutions of multilayer MnPS3 wereuncovered. A pressure-induced lifted symmetry (layer sliding) of multilayerMnPS(3) from the C2/m-staggeredP-dimer phase (phase I) to P3 1m aligned P-dimer phase (phase II) at 6.7 GPa was demonstrated, evidencedby the overlap of E-g (5) and A(1g) (3) modes under high pressure and further first-principles calculations.Meanwhile, the linearly decreased optical band gap with pressure indicatedthat the charge-transfer excitations that define the gap were confinedin intra-slab in nature regardless of the interlayer sliding. Further calculated band gap structure also suggested that no obvious electronicstructural phase transition occurred in multilayer MnPS3 during the pressure-induced phase transition of multilayer MnPS3 except from a decreased band gap with pressure. In addition,both the results of absorption spectroscopy measurements and first-principlescalculation demonstrated that multilayer MnPS3 remainedto be a direct band gap semiconductor up to 21.8 GPa. Our findingsare of great significance in expanding the application of compressiveMnPS(3) in photoelectric devices.
Pressure induced band structure evolution of halide perovskites: a first-principles atomic and electronic structure study

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations have been conducted to draw a broad picture of pressure induced band structure evolution in various phases of organic and inorganic halide perovskite materials. Under a wide range of pressure applied, distinct band structure behaviors including magnitude change of band gap, direct-indirect/indirect-direct band gap transitions and CBM/VBM shifts, have been observed between organic and inorganic perovskites among different phases. Through atomic and electronic structure calculations, band gap narrowing/widening has been rationalized through crystal orbitals coupling transformations; direct-indirect mutual transitions were explained based on structural symmetry evolution; different VBM/CBM shifts behaviors between organic and inorganic perovskites were analyzed focusing on orientation and polarity of molecules/atoms outside the octahedrals. These results provide a comprehensive guidance for further experimental investigations on pressure engineering of perovskite materials.

Abstract:Pressure-induced phase transitions in metal halide perovskites lead to significantly different material properties and offer great potential for diverse applications. The electronic, structural, and optical properties of Cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr 3 ) crystals are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) to draw an integrated picture of orbital morphology, absorption spectra, and band gap values. Spin-orbit coupling and DFT-1/2 correction are used to gain a better insight into electronic properties and band splitting in the cubic phase. Calculations of pressure-induced phase transitions, electronic band gap engineering, and manipulation of optical absorption edges of CsPbBr 3 are conducted. In the cubic and tetragonal crystal lattices, a band gap closure and opening occurs demonstrating a Dirac cone upon application and increase of pressure. Indeed, in the tetragonal lattice of CsPbBr 3 , a topological band occurs. Orthorhombic perovskite crystal lattice undergoes successive direct-indirect and indirect-direct band gap transitions, followed by a space group change at extreme pressures. However, under pressure, orthorhombic non-perovskite lattice experiences a sudden band gap breakdown. Phase and band gap transitions are explained by orbital hybridizations and structural symmetry evolution (e.g., bond length contraction/dilation and octahedral cage rotation/distortion). These results provide comprehensive guidelines for further experimental studies on pressure engineering, advanced photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications, discovering and understanding new topological band structures of perovskite materials.

Abstract:As the driving force for technological innovations in the field of photovoltaic applications, metal halide perovskites have been extensively studied and significant research progress has been made in the last few years. Of particular interest is that with the addition of the pressure dimension, the development of the investigations has contributed significantly to the reliable detection of structure–property relationships. Furthermore, recent discoveries based on new perovskite materials and new characterizations have led to resurgence in studying not only the pressure-tailored physical properties but also the pressure-driven novel functionality, including the ambient performance after removing applied pressure. We will discuss the manipulation, modification, and improvement in photovoltaic perovskites by pressure engineering, which is crucial to achieve the desired characteristics for the next generation of material-by-design, as well as various applications.

Abstract:Thepressure-enhanced electronic properties of metal halide perovskitesare advantageous for photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications.However, another critical performance factor, the thermal conductivitybehavior under pressure, has received much less attention. Using thestate-of-the-art phonon Wigner transport equation, we studied theprototypical methylammonium lead triiodide in its cubic phase (c-MAPbI(3)) to discover a new anomalous pressure effect, where the dominantcoherence-channel thermal conductivity is invariant with changingpressure. The straightening of the octahedra and the shortening ofthe lattice constant with increasing pressure help create this anomalousbehavior that suppresses the overall thermal conductivity changes.By comparing with the bulk modulus and Gru''neisen parameterof several materials, we unveil another unusual phenomenon in c-MAPbI(3). The thermal conductivity of this soft and strongly anharmonicmaterial under pressure behaves like those of stiff and weakly anharmonicmaterials. Together with the reported enhanced optoelectronic properties,our findings support MAPbI(3) as a pressure-modulated energyconversion material with decoupled thermal and electrical properties.

Abstract:<p>The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of the solar cells containing metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have rapidly increased and exceeded 25% during the past decade. The photovoltaic properties of these devices are extensively investigated in terms of their microstructures, environmental characteristics, and carrier dynamics, and the MHP structural evolution under high pressure is evaluated. In addition, the energy level structure, electron/hole dynamics, and optical/electronic properties of MHPs with anisotropic crystal structures are examined. However, the correlation between the structural anisotropy and material properties of these perovskites is rarely considered in the literature studies on their high‐pressure behavior. In this progress report, the optical/electronic properties of MHPs with anisotropic structures under thermal, mechanically imposed, and in‐service strains/stresses that have been previously neglected by researchers are summarized.</p>

Highly tunable properties in pressure-treated two-dimensional Dion-Jacobson perovskites.

Abstract:The application of pressure can achieve novel structures and exotic phenomena in condensed matters. However, such pressure-induced transformations are generally reversible and useless for engineering materials for ambient-environment applications. Here, we report comprehensive high-pressure investigations on a series of Dion-Jacobson (D-J) perovskites A'A n-1Pb n I3n+1 [A' = 3-(aminomethyl) piperidinium (3AMP), A = methylammonium (MA), n = 1, 2, 4]. Our study demonstrates their irreversible behavior, which suggests pressure/strain engineering could viably improve light-absorber material not only in situ but also ex situ, thus potentially fostering the development of optoelectronic and electroluminescent materials. We discovered that the photoluminescence (PL) intensities are remarkably enhanced by one order of magnitude at mild pressures. Also, higher pressure significantly changes the lattices, boundary conditions of electronic wave functions, and possibly leads to semiconductor-metal transitions. For (3AMP)(MA)3Pb4I13, permanent recrystallization from 2D to three-dimensional (3D) structure occurs upon decompression, with dramatic changes in optical properties.

Abstract:Abstract As promising photovoltaic materials, halide perovskites display large structural modifiability specific to their organic‐inorganic hybrid lattices, thus providing key to unlock many enhanced and novel physical properties. In particular, hybrid perovskites exhibit extraordinary functional responses to mechanical stimulation due to their soft lattices. However, a general pattern describing the evolution of perovskite properties under pressure is missing, rendering such research without theoretical guidance and further the optimization of optoelectronic performance. Here, a framework delineating the pressure‐dependent evolutions of lattice structure, bandgap, and photoluminescence (PL) across four distinct regions in all perovskites assuming 3D and 2D structures is unveiled, accrediting long‐range disorderness to be the common origin of bandgap blueshift, PL annihilation, and structural amorphization. Using such developed model as an instructional guideline, an optical bandgap and luminescent evolutions in quasi‐2D tin(II) iodide perovskites are revealed, where (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 (CH 3 NH 3 )Sn 2 I 7 (C 4 H 9 NH 3 + : butylammonium; CH 3 NH 3 + : methylammonium) is found to be the softest perovskite (bulk modulus ≈4.8 GPa) known so far. By meticulously choosing appropriate peak pressure ≈4 GPa, (C 4 H 9 NH 3 ) 2 (CH 3 NH 3 )Sn 2 I 7 shows irreversible defect healing (carrier lifetime prolongation from 7 to 22 ns) and permanent PL enhancement upon decompression to ambient condition, signifying practicality of the pressure‐driven behaviors unveiled in this work.

Abstract:Two-dimensional hybrid lead halide perovskites are important materials for solar energy and optoelectronic applications. Although the inorganic component normally determines the electronic structure, there has been an emerging interest in organic sublattice engineering. The organic spacer can influence the stability, the mechanical and optoelectronic properties, and the device performance, at least through steric effects. Order–disorder transitions facilitated by the organic molecules are some of the pathways that mediate this influence. Herein, we investigated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the optical properties of hexadecylammonium (HDA) lead iodide ((HDA)2PbI4), where the pliable organic part contains a long aliphatic chain with many conformational degrees of freedom, by means of optical, Raman, and solid-state NMR spectroscopy, as well as density functional theory simulations. Under moderate pressures of 2 GPa and above, the perovskite crystal exhibits domains with differing photoluminescence (PL) energies. The PL peak distribution exceeds 100 nm at higher pressure, and the changes are partly irreversible after pressure release. We explain the observed phenomena by conformational transitions, which occurred around the different C–C bonds proximate to the cationic NH3 end HDA and affected the lead iodide nanosheets and thus the optoelectronic properties. The micrometer-scale bandgap junctions formed in one material can be applied in novel optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The existence of organic components in 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites gives them significant structural flexibility in response to pressure. Here we study the high-pressure behavior and associated physical properties of a family of 2D hybrid perovskites, [CnH2n+1NH3](2)PbI4 (n = 4, 8, 12). Our high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations show that the critical pressures for driving structural transitions and amorphization are proportional to the length of alkylamine cations, which arise from their scaling counterbalance to compression energy via conformational rearrangements. In addition, we reveal that their photoluminescence alters from free excitons to bound excitons, then to self -trapped excitons under successive pressure manipulation. Furthermore, we discovered that the high-pressure treatment could transform the samples from bulk micrometer powders to thin nanosheets. Our findings suggest that these 2D hybrid perovskites structurally evolve and amorphize in a remarkably different way compared with conventional 2D materials because of their high degrees of structural freedom.
Structural Dynamics Descriptors for Metal Halide Perovskites

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have shown extraordinary performance in solar energy conversion technologies. They have been classified as "soft semiconductors" due to their flexible corner-sharing octahedral networks and polymorphous nature. Understanding the local and average structures continues to be challenging for both modelling and experiments. Here, we report the quantitative analysis of structural dynamics in time and space from molecular dynamics simulations of perovskite crystals. The compact descriptors provided cover a wide variety of structural properties, including octahedral tilting and distortion, local lattice parameters, molecular orientations, as well as their spatial correlation. To validate our methods, we have trained a machine learning force field (MLFF) for methylammonium lead bromide (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$) using an on-the-fly training approach with Gaussian process regression. The known stable phases are reproduced and we find an additional symmetry-breaking effect in the cubic and tetragonal phases close to the phase transition temperature. To test the implementation for large trajectories, we also apply it to 69,120 atom simulations for CsPbI$_3$ based on an MLFF developed using the atomic cluster expansion formalism. The structural dynamics descriptors and Python toolkit are general to perovskites and readily transferable to more complex compositions.

Abstract:Perovskite material studies encompass many fields such as energy harvesting, superconductivity, magnetism, and beyond. Thus, it is very important to investigate their structural varieties in external environments. Here, the pressure-induced structure change of a distorted perovskite, Y0.7Lu0.3AlO3, was examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Upon compression, it underwent an isostructural transition near 22 GPa. The quenchable high-pressure phase had a much higher bulk modulus than the low-pressure phase. This work shows the flexibility of perovskite distortion and will help to understand the property anomalies in prevailing perovskite ABO3 systems and design more functional materials.
Two Regimes of Bandgap Red Shift and Partial Ambient Retention in Pressure-Treated Two-Dimensional Perovskites

Abstract:The discovery of elevated environmental stability in two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid perovskites represents a significant advance in low-cost, high-efficiency light absorbers. In comparison to 3D counterparts, 2D perovskites of organo-lead-halides exhibit wider, quantum-confined optical bandgaps that reduce the wavelength range of light absorption. Here, we characterize the structural and optical properties of 2D hybrid perovskites as a function of hydrostatic pressure. We observe bandgap narrowing with pressure of 633 meV that is partially retained following pressure release due to an atomic reconfiguration mechanism. We identify two distinct regimes of compression dominated by the softer organic and less compressible inorganic sublattices. Our findings, which also include PL enhancement, correlate well with density functional theory calculations and establish structure-property relationships at the atomic scale. These concepts can be expanded into other hybrid perovskites and suggest that pressure/strain processing could offer a new route to improved materials-by-design in applications.
Local Structure in Crystalline, Glass and Melt States of a Hybrid Metal Halide Perovskite

Abstract:The pursuit of structure-property relationships in crystalline metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has yielded an unprecedented combination of advantageous characteristics for wide-ranging optoelectronic applications. While crystalline MHP structures are readily accessible through diffraction-based structure refinements, providing a clear view of associated long-range ordering, the local structures in more recently discovered glassy MHP states remain unexplored. Herein, we utilize a combination of Raman spectroscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to investigate the coordination environment in crystalline, glass and melt states of the 2D MHP [(S)-(-)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylammonium]2PbBr4. While crystalline SNPB shows polarization-dependent Raman spectra, the glassy and melt states exhibit broad features and lack polarization dependence. Solid-state NMR reveals disordering at the organic-inorganic interface of the glass due to significant spatial disruption in the tethering ammonium groups and the corresponding dihedral bond angles connecting the naphthyl and ammonium groups, while still preserving substantial naphthyl group registry and remnants of the layering from the crystalline state (deduced from XRD analysis). Moreover, PDF analysis demonstrates the persistence of corner-sharing PbBr6 octahedra in the inorganic framework of the melt/glass phases, but with a loss of structural coherence over length scales exceeding approximately one octahedron due to disorder in the inter- and intraoctahedra bond angles/lengths. These findings deepen our understanding of diverse MHP structural motifs and how structural alterations within the MHP glass affect properties, offering potential for advancing next-generation phase change materials and devices.

Abstract:The hybrid nature and soft lattice of organolead halide perovskites render their structural changes and optical properties susceptible to external driving forces such as temperature and pressure, remarkably different from conventional semiconductors. Here, we investigate the pressure-induced optical response of a typical two-dimensional perovskite crystal, phenylethylamine lead iodide. At a moderate pressure within 3.5 GPa, its photoluminescence red-shifts continuously, exhibiting an ultrabroad energy tunability range up to 320 meV in the visible spectrum, with quantum yield remaining nearly constant. First-principles calculations suggest that an out-of-plane quasi-uniaxial compression occurs under a hydrostatic pressure, while the energy is absorbed by the reversible and elastic tilting of the benzene rings within the long-chain ligands. This anisotropic structural deformation effectively modulates the quantum confinement effect by 250 meV via barrier height lowering. The broad tunability within a relatively low pressure range will expand optoelectronic applications to a new paradigm with pressure as a tuning knob.
