Abstract:In the past few decades, the construction of discrete supramolecular double-metallacycles has attracted wide interest because of their unique structures and their potential applications in photoelectric materials. Since some progress has been made in this area, it is time to summarize the progress of discrete supramolecular double-metallacycles. In this review, we will briefly introduce the synthetic strategy of discrete supramolecular double-metallacycles. In addition, we will discuss the design principles, preparation methods, optical properties, and functions of these discrete supramolecular double-metallacycles.

Abstract:During the past few decades, the construction of macrocyclic molecules/complexes has attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications in sensing, catalysis, molecular machine, drug delivery, etc. Coordination-driven self-assembly has proven to be a simple yet highly efficient approach for the preparation of various supramolecular metallacycles with the predetermined shapes and sizes as well as the distribution and total number of functional groups. Since the significant progress has been made during the last few years in the field of coordination-driven self-assembly, it is time to summarize the recent development in coordination-driven self-assembly of functionalized supramolecular metallacycles. In this review, we will highlight some recent advances concerning the preparation of functionalized supramolecular metallacycles via coordination-driven self-assembly between the year 2010-2018. In addition, the properties and the applications of these metallacycles in the areas of photo- and electrochemistry, sensing, supramolecular gel, biological applications, etc. will be also discussed.

Abstract:Owing to the reversible, directional and predictable nature of metal–ligand coordination, coordination-driven self-assembly has emerged as a powerful bottom-up strategy for preparing metal-containing supramolecules or materials. In the field of 2D constructs, considerable progress has been made in the coordination-driven self-assembly of small discrete polygons (<5 nm) and infinite 2D polymers. However, structures of intermediate size have not been widely explored because of challenges in their synthesis and characterization. In this Review, we focus on the assembly of large 2D metallosupramolecular architectures of increasing size and complexity through three distinct approaches: expanding the size of macrocycles, increasing the number of layers within concentric polygons and forming complex structures by tessellation. These large but discrete 2D metallosupramolecules possess the unique features of both macrocycles, including a precisely controlled structure with high solubility for solution-based applications and characterization, and infinite polymers, such as an ordered distribution of the functionalities. Therefore, these systems could serve as ideal models for investigating the structure–property–function relationships of 2D materials.

Abstract:Recently, the construction of discrete multiferrocenyl organometallic structures via coordination-driven self-assembly has attracted considerable attention because of their interesting electrochemical properties and wide range of applications in the areas of organometallic chemistry, electrochemistry, and materials science. Coordination-driven self-assembly has proven to be a simple yet highly efficient approach for the preparation of various multiferrocenyl metallacycles and metallacages with predetermined shapes and sizes as well as the distribution and total number of ferrocenes. This review focuses on the recent progress in the construction of a variety of discrete multiferrocenyl metallacycles and metallacages via coordination-driven self-assembly. Abstract:Polymers have greatly changed and are still changing the way we live ever since, and the construction of novel polymers as functional materials remains an attractive topic in polymer science and related areas. During the past few years, the marriage of discrete supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), including two-dimensional (2D) metallacycles and three-dimensional (3D) metallacages, and polymers gave rise to two novel types of metallo-supramolecular polymers, i.e., metallacycle/metallacage-cored star polymers (MSPs) and metallacycle/metallacage-crosslinked polymer networks (MPNs), which has attracted increasing attention and emerged as an exciting new research direction in polymer chemistry. Attributed to their well-defined and diverse topological architectures as well as the unique dynamic features of metallacycles/metallacages as cores or crosslinks, these novel polymers have shown extensive applications. In this review, aiming at providing a practical guide to this emerging area, the introduction of synthetic strategies towards MSPs and MPNs will be presented. In addition, their wide applications in areas such as functional materials, molecular sieving, drug delivery, bacterial killing and bioimaging are also discussed.

Abstract:The anion-adaptive self-assembly described here not only offers a facile approach to produce large single-molecule magnets without the need for precise manipulation of the stoichiometry of ligand-metal centers but also provides an understanding of how structural factors affect the magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that a rare hexagonal metallacycle with a diameter approaching 23 Å was obtained. Magnetic investigation shows that the resulting hexagonal metallacycle behaves as a typical single-molecule magnet with double relaxation under dc field thanks to the different coordination geometry of the DyIII centers.

Abstract:Interlocked molecules are a type of supramolecules whose sub-components are held together not by covalent bonds but non-covalent interactions. Examples include rotaxanes, catenanes, Solomon links, ring-in-ring complexes, molecular Borromean rings, molecular knots and interlocked cages. The design and manufacture of these architectures is mainly based on self-assembly and template-directed methodologies. Inspired by the successful utilization of coordination-driven assembly in metallasupramolecular systems, the metallacyclic assembly of interlocked superstructures is developing rapidly and as such makes a fascinating topic for reviewing. Abstract:Supramolecular assembly of well-defined discrete architectures has been of great interest due to the tunable properties of these structures in functional materials and bio-mimicking. While metal-coordination-driven assembly has been extensively studied, anion-coordination-driven assembly (ACDA) is just emerging for constructing complex supramolecular structures. Herein two A(2n)L(2n) (A = anion, L = ligand; n = 1 or 2) 'aniono'-supramolecular assemblies, i.e. double helicates and the first anion grid, have been constructed based on the coordination between phosphate (PO43-) anion and a bis-tris(urea) ligand. Moreover, the aniono-grid and double helicate motifs can be readily interconverted under ambient conditions by simply changing the counter-cation. These results redefine the power and scope of ACDA, which may represent a new approach in the assembly of well-defined architectures in parallel with the metal coordination-driven assembly of metallo-supramolecules.

Abstract:In this review, a comprehensive summary of supramolecular transformations within discrete coordination-driven supramolecular architectures, including helices, metallacycles, metallacages, etc., is presented. Recent investigations have demonstrated that coordination-driven self-assembled architectures provide an ideal platform to study supramolecular transformations mainly due to the relatively rigid yet dynamic nature of the coordination bonds. Various stimuli have been extensively employed to trigger the transformation processes of metallosupramolecular architectures, such as solvents, concentration, anions, guests, change in component fractions or chemical compositions, light, and post-modification reactions, which allowed for the formation of new structures with specific properties and functions. Thus, it is believed that supramolecular transformations could serve as another highly efficient approach for generating diverse metallosupramolecular architectures. Classified by the aforementioned various stimuli used to induce the interconversion processes, the emphasis in this review will be on the transformation conditions, structural changes, mechanisms, and the output of specific properties and functions upon induction of structural transformations.

Abstract:A double metallacycle was prepared via the size-selective integrative self-sorting of four different building blocks driven by a reversible metal-ligand coordination interaction. A hydrophobic dendron was placed on a metallacycle and a hydrophilic dendron was attached to the other metallacycle, producing a two-faced Janus-type supramolecule with two distinct functionalities. In aqueous media, hierarchical self-assembly of the supramolecular system was induced by the combination of coordination interactions and hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions resulting in the formation of micrometer-sized fiber-like structures, a morphology distinct from metallacycles bearing only one type of functionality. This study provides a versatile approach for the construction of Janus-type molecules and demonstrates that integrative self-sorting of a supramolecular coordination system can be utilized for the preparation of complex supramolecular systems with predesigned functionalities and morphologies.

Abstract:In this review, novel hierarchical self-assembled structures based on reversible organo-metallic supramolecular polymers are discussed. Firstly, we discuss recent advances in the field of coordination polymers, considering cases in which transition metal ions and bis- or multiligands are used to build up organometallic supramolecular polymers. Secondly, we review hierarchical self-assembled structures based on these coordination polymers, such as polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer films, capsules, complex coacervate core micelles and microemulsions, and nanoribbons. Finally, we give a short perspective on the formation of coordination-polymeric hierarchical self-assembled structures. The implications of fundamental and applied research, as well as aspects of new technologies are also discussed.

Abstract:We describe herein the hierarchical self-assembly of discrete supramolecular metallacycles into ordered fibers or spherical particles through multiple noncovalent interactions. A new series of well-defined metallacycles decorated with long alkyl chains were obtained through metal-ligand interactions, which were capable of aggregating into ordered fibroid or spherical nanostructures on the surface, mostly driven by hydrophobic interactions. In-depth studies indicated that the morphology diversity was originated from the structural information encoded in the metallacycles, including the number of alkyl chains and their spatial orientation. Interestingly, the morphology of the metallacycle aggregates could be tuned by changing the solvent polarity. These findings are of special significance since they provide a simple yet highly controllable approach to prepare ordered and tunable nanostructures from small building blocks by means of hierarchical self-assembly.

Abstract:2D materials have received tremendous scientific and engineering interests due to their remarkable properties and broad-ranging applications such as energy storage and conversion, catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, and so forth. To further enhance their performance and endow them with new functions, 2D materials are proposed to hybridize with other nanostructured building blocks, resulting in hybrid nanostructures with various morphologies and structures. The properties and functions of these hybrid nanostructures depend strongly on the interfacial interactions between 2D materials and other building blocks. Covalent and coordination bonds are two strong interactions that hold high potential in constructing these robust hybrid nanostructures based on 2D materials. However, most 2D materials are chemically inert, posing problems for the covalent assembly with other building blocks. There are usually coordination atoms in most of 2D materials and their derivatives, thus coordination interaction as a strong interfacial interaction has attracted much attention. In this review, recent progress on the coordination-driven hierarchical assembly based on 2D materials is summarized, focusing on the synthesis approaches, various architectures, and structure-property relationship. Furthermore, insights into the present challenges and future research directions are also presented.

Abstract:Metallacycles, typically assembled from functional pyridine ligands and metals by coordination-driven self-assembly, have emerged as a novel and highly favoured class of supramolecular macrocycles in both academia and industry. Due to their facile functionalization, reversible stimulus responses, and positively charged skeletons, metallacycles have attracted widespread attention across various fields including catalysis, sensing, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. More importantly, metallacycles can combine with organic small molecules or targeted molecules or polymers to form multifunctional metal-supramolecular assemblies, or metallacycle-based agents, through hierarchical self-assembly or postmodification. This ability makes metallacycles a revolutionary tool with unparalleled potential for both diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we summarize the synthetic strategies and functionalization methods for the construction of metallacycle assemblies with various shapes and of metallacycle-based agents. Then, we describe representative advances and discuss the current challenges in the biomedical application of metallacycles, including studies on their interactions with biomolecules, bioimaging, biosensing, drug delivery, and antibacterial and antitumor effects.

Abstract:Since the emergence of the concept of chemical topology, interlocked molecular assemblies have graduated from academic curiosities and poorly defined species to become synthetic realities. Coordination-directed synthesis provides powerful, diverse, and increasingly sophisticated protocols for accessing interlocked molecules. Originally, metal ions were employed solely as templates to gather and position building blocks in entwined or threaded arrangements. Recently, metal centers have increasingly featured within the backbones of the integral structural elements, which in turn use noncovalent interactions to self-assemble into intricate topologies. By outlining ingenious recent examples as well as seminal classic cases, this Review focuses on the role of metal-ligand paradigms in assembling molecular links. In addition, the ever-evolving approaches to efficient assembly, the structural features of the resulting architectures, and their prospects for the future are also presented.
