Abstract:Abstract Since 2001, there have been copious applications of cognitive science to Shakespeare and some to the work of other early modern authors, but have these yielded any new perspectives on the drama or poetry of this time period? This article distinguishes scientism or theoretical approaches that simply uphold scientific findings from interdisciplinary work that prompts scholars to revisit the literature of Shakespeare or other authors anew. In doing so, the article troubles the uniform, normative, and seemingly apolitical nature of cognitive science as well as the ways in which this framework has in some cases created a cognitive outlook that removes the brain from its lived experiences in exterior environs. Because Shakespeare's cultural capital has made him central to cognitive studies in literature, the article's debunking of quasiscientific approaches has wider implications for cognitive examinations of literature, given the common merits and regressions that have resulted from this canonical inclination to focus on a single author.

Abstract:Presupposing no specialist musical knowledge, this book offers a fresh perspective on the dramatic role of music in the plays of Shakespeare and his early seventeenth-century contemporaries. Simon Smith argues that many plays used music as a dramatic tool, inviting culturally familiar responses to music from playgoers. Music cues regularly encouraged audiences to listen, look, imagine or remember at dramatically critical moments, shaping meaning in plays from The Winter's Tale to A Game at Chess, and making theatregoers active and playful participants in playhouse performance. Drawing upon sensory studies, theatre history, material texts, musicology and close reading, Smith argues for the importance of music in familiar and less well-known plays including Antony and Cleopatra, Othello, The Revenger's Tragedy, Sophonisba, The Spanish Gypsy and A Woman Killed With Kindness.

Abstract:This article draws a sharp distinction between the terms 'metre' and 'rhythm'. It explores the meaningful non-semantic values in Shakespeare's verbal patterns, and the super-metrical rhythms they create. It considers the religious and educational contexts in which ordinary people in the sixteenth century experienced metre – experiences which often included the use of paraphrase or hearing something against a memory of another version of the same thing. And it argues that in English, where poets are compelled to grapple with the competing forces of accent and syllable length, the interplay between metre and rhythm can be exploited in fluid, even seemingly improvisational ways. In the spoken language of plays, this feature can be used to aid characterisation by creating specific dramaturgical effects, including different kinds of noise and, crucially, significant silences, which can be missed when metre and rhythm are used as interchangeable terms.

Abstract:For many early modern playgoers, music was not a peripheral feature of commercial drama, but a chief attraction of the theatres—sometimes even the primary motivation for playgoing. This chapter explores early evidence of musically interested playgoers and their engagements with practical musical performance at venues like the Globe and Blackfriars. It works with a range of examples before taking The Merchant of Venice as an extended test case in the early modern relationship between drama and music. Through these materials, the chapter offers three core propositions about playhouse engagements with music during Shakespeare’s working life. The first is that musical experience was in itself a significant and widely acknowledged incentive for playgoing that can be traced across the textual record. The second is that playgoers regularly encountered music as an integral element of a play’s dramaturgy, and so their musical experiences need to be understood in the context of their wider engagements with drama. The final suggestion is that playwrights like Shakespeare anticipated the overlap of musical and dramatic experience in playhouse performance by embedding music into their dramaturgical designs, using playhouse responses to music to shape dramatic meaning.

Abstract:How does one dance Shakespeare? This question underpins this collection of six articles, which explore how choreographers have invested space and the playtext’s interstices to transpose them into ballet pieces – whether contemporary ballet, classical or neo-classical ballet, or works that fall under the umbrella term of contemporary dance. The authors delineate how the emotions translate into silent danced movement and highlight the physical, somatic element in music – beyond spoken language. Through the triple prism of dance, music and a reflection on silence, this special issue invites us to reconsider questions of embodiment, performance and eloquence in Shakespeare’s plays.

Abstract:Taking sixteen Shakespearean adaptations by eight playwrights as the object of study, Chen Hongwei's book Shakespeare in the Post-war English Drama ( published by Peking University Press in April, 2019) carries forth an analysis of the forms of Shakespeare's presence in the Post-War English drama from the aspect of contemporary adaptation theories. In Methodology, the research is an interdisciplinary study which covers drama study, culture study, adaptation theory study and cross-media study. In contents, the book is composed of four parts, including "What is adaptation? Why do we make adaptation?", "Adaptation/rewriting: critical dialogues with Shakespeare," "Variations of Shakespeare's remains in the English drama" and " Who writes Shakespeare?". Through its research, the book argues that though the critical consensus on the Bard's authority has been crumbled in the past decades with his mythical presence being disrupted in every possible way, Shakespeare has never been so vigorously alive in the disguised presence of adaptations in the piles of fragments and shatters that he is reduced to.

Abstract:By exploring Shakespeare's maritime vocabulary across the full expanse of his career, this article engages with the multiple kinds of metaphorical and physical meanings the sea created for the playwright. Shakespeare's poetics of the sea connect to recent developments in the blue or oceanic humanities. The further distinction that Shakespeare makes between salt and fresh waters helps unpack the ecological and experiential question of environmental hostility and the dangers that water poses for terrestrial mammals. A final section briefly takes up a poetics of immersion through images of swimming in and beyond Shakespeare.

Abstract:The versatility of the appropriation of Shakespeare in recent years has been witnessed in a variety of registers and media, which range from special effects on the stage, music, cartoons, comics, advertisements, all the way to video games. This contribution looks at some of the novels in the Shakespeare Re-told Hogarth series as effigies of the contemporary process of adapting the Elizabethan plays to the environments in which the potential readers/viewers work, become informed, seek entertainment and adjust themselves culturally, being, ultimately, cognitive schemes which are validated by today’s reception processes. The first novel in the series was Jeanette Winterson’s Gap of Time (2016), in which the Shakespearean reference to the years that separate the two moments of The Winter’s Tale’s plot becomes the title of a video game relying mainly on fantasy. Margaret Atwood’s Hag-Seed (2016) rewrites The Tempest as a parable of the theatrical performance and its avatars, as undisputable authority, on the one hand, and source of subversiveness, on the other. Dunbar (2018) is Edward St. Aubyn’s response to the family saga of King Lear, where kingship, territorial division and military conflict are replaced by modern media wars, and the issues of public exposure in the original text are reinterpreted interpreted by resorting to the impact of the audio-visual on every-day life.

Abstract:Modern literary criticism offers the reader a whole sphere of Shakespearean studies based on the ideas of historical poetics. In accordance with the latter, we understand the images and problems of dramas, comedies and tragedies of the great English playwright in the key of romantic, symbolist, psychoanalytic, and other interpretations. Emma Smith offers a relevant reading of Shakespeare’s texts, based on theatrical productions and film adaptations of his works in the 20th and 21st centuries. The actualization of the Shakespearean heritage is being implemented in modern theater and cinema as an attempt to bring the complex and diverse content of the writer’s tragedies and comedies closer to mass culture. As a result, there appears the effect of inversion, of a break-off with the deep philosophical problems of the Shakespeare theater. The chapters of the book somehow address the problem of interpretation -contemporary with Shakespeare and with our time. The author’s arsenal includes psychology and psychoanalysis, cultural and sociological approaches, which are combined with the actual philological analysis of plays. However, the book discusses the evolution of themes and genres the least. The works chosen for the analysis are well known to readers and experts. The book includes 20 chapters, each dedicated to one play. We stress that, in the educational process, this structure is very convenient because it draws one’s attention to the work as much as possible and allows determining one’s own perception, consent or disagreement with the author of the book. This feature has been tested in practical work with students in classes on Shakespeare’s works. We analyze all the interpretations of Shakespeare’s tragedies and comedies, both modern and historical, given in Smith’s book. The author of the book is interested, first of all, in topical approaches to understanding the plays of the English playwright, this is dictated by the very aim of the study - to interest the reader and show Shakespeare as our contemporary. The author of the book speaks a modern language with her reader, relying on the experience of attracting both wide readers and experts to reading Shakespeare’s works. Abstract:In an age of discovery, the ocean voyage pushed back frontiers of the knowable, thereby providing a master trope for knowledge acquisition that, in Shakespeare, authorized the rupture of conventional dramatic form. This article charts the progress of that rupture and the corresponding enlistment of the audience's imaginative cooperation to complete the dramatic illusion. It then considers the kinds of knowledge attainable to those who cross the sea in Shakespeare's dramaturgy and ends by suggesting that as increasingly sophisticated staging facilitated the theatrical representation of wonders, the ocean voyage trope comes to portend a drama where material spectacle would unseat imagination.

In the process of thinking and perception of architecture there is always more importance given to visual senses than the other senses and the problems of contemporary architecture is rooted in visual dominance and may be the result of unbalanced senses system. All our information about our surrounding world is achieved by our senses and this information help us in perception and recognition. A building should bring into perspective all the five senses, thereby giving a threedimensional angle to the structure. Abstract:As part of the response in the humanities to rising concerns of the human influence on the Earth system, ecocriticism – an interdisciplinary approach to the study of literature focused on ecological and environmental concerns – became a major trend in literary and cultural studies by the first decade of the twenty‐first century. This period also witnessed an increase in ecocritical studies of Shakespeare's works, which have continued to proliferate. It is timely therefore to consider those individual works that have interested ecocritics and featured in ecocritical studies. This article will provide just such a consideration of Shakespeare's final play, The Tempest (1611), providing a critical review of the play's ecocritical studies thus far, and drawing attention to central ideas and common themes in the process. Finally, the article offers its own ecocritical analysis of the play, based on historical accounts of a catastrophic tidal event that took place in south‐west England, in 1607.

Abstract:This chapter pairs two formative, but often disregarded novels, Desperate Remedies and The Rescue , on the basis of their shared interest in sensation. Also showing that sensation is a fundamental consideration in contemporary physiology, the chapter explores a correlation between popularised studies of nerve transmission and energy circulation and the way that the two novelists construct scenic events in their fiction. The enforced solipsism which Walter Pater embraces is distinguished from the necessary participation in a medium which the characters in the wider physics of the novels of Hardy and Conrad undergo. Through an examination of a number of highly sensory scenes, both novels are shown to dramatize the threat of passivity and the requirement of activity.

Abstract:The space of Shakespeare’s plays is an extremely vast one. In his plays, most of the cosmic phenomena have symbolic significance, indicating the tension between order and disorder. Hamlet said that Denmark was one of the worst cells in the prison of the world. Again he said that he could be bound in a nut shell and counted himself the king of infinite space. This shows the determination of the Danish prince to plan a fight-back. Shakespeare likes using stage metaphor on which life is but a play, and the world is his stage. Shakespeare’s own stage is London, as Peter Whitfield indicates that Shakespeare takes London as a multi-level world, not only the royal center of national identity, but also the bottom society with filth. For John Gillies, the map scene at the beginning of King Lear can be seen as a phenomenological space criticism. The map is closely related to the body’s desire. While in Othello’s exotic space, two time series are paralleled. In short, Shakespeare is the greatest cosmopolitan playwright of his time, and of all ages.

Abstract:If asked about which writer they associate with Anglophone literature, most students might come up with William Shakespeare, who has also become an integral part of British cultural identity. As a matter of fact, his works keep delighting audiences worldwide. However, EFL learners might struggle with the complexity and ambiguity of his plays and poetry. This anthology provides perspectives of how to read and teach Shakespeare. Thereby, it focusses on a variety of texts worth implementing in teaching units. Inter-Sense: An Investigation of Sensory Blending in Fiction

Abstract:This study reports on the semantic organization of English sensory descriptors of the five basic senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell in a large corpus of over 8,000 fiction books. We introduce a large-scale text data-driven approach based on distributional-semantic word embeddings to identify and extract these descriptors as well as analyze their mixing interconnections in the resulting conceptual and sensory space. The findings are relevant for research on concept acquisition and representation, as well as for applications that can benefit from a better understanding of perceptual spaces of sensory experiences, in fiction, in particular, and in language in general.

Abstract:The availability of quantitative text analysis methods has provided new ways of analyzing literature in a manner that was not available in the pre-information era. Here we apply comprehensive machine learning analysis to the work of William Shakespeare. The analysis shows clear changes in the style of writing over time, with the most significant changes in the sentence length, frequency of adjectives and adverbs, and the sentiments expressed in the text. Applying machine learning to make a stylometric prediction of the year of the play shows a Pearson correlation of 0.71 between the actual and predicted year, indicating that Shakespeare's writing style as reflected by the quantitative measurements changed over time. Additionally, it shows that the stylometrics of some of the plays is more similar to plays written either before or after the year they were written. For instance, Romeo and Juliet is dated 1596, but is more similar in stylometrics to plays written by Shakespeare after 1600. The source code for the analysis is available for free download.
