Abstract:In this Letter, we report a graphene-based hybrid plasmonic modulator (GHPM) realized by employing the electro-absorption effect of graphene. The simulation results show that the modulation efficiency of GHPM, i.e., extinction ratio per length, can be as large as 0.417 dB/mu m, which is more than twice as much as that of recently presented graphene-on-silicon modulator. It was found that the improvement in modulation efficiency is mainly due to the enhancement of the overlap between graphene and the mode field in GHPM. A prototype of GHPM was fabricated. The measurement results showed that the GHPM can work in a broadband from 1530 to 1570 nm and an improved modulation efficiency of 1.08 dB (at 30 mu m). Finally, we have discussed the factors that influence the modulation efficiency. Our proof-of-concept design may promote the development of on-chip graphene-based plasmonic devices. Abstract:We demonstrate a dynamic surface plasmonic modulation based on graphene-nanowire (grapheme-NW) hybrid structures in the visible light range. A static modulation depth of as high as 0.07 dB/μm has been achieved experimentally. Through careful simulation and systematical experimental investigation, we found that the dual-confinement effect of charge density and electromagnetic energy around the vicinity of the NW will dramatically enhance the light-matter interaction and increase the Fermi level shifting, which are the key roles for bringing the optical response of the device to the visible range. The carrier concentration near the vicinity of a Ag NW is estimated to reach 0.921×10(14) cm(-2) after applying more than 25 V voltages, which is enough to shift the Fermi level for visible light. Furthermore, the modulation behaviors near the Dirac point of monolayer graphene and the singularity of gap-induced bilayer graphene are investigated. Calculated optical conductivity as a function of Fermi level predicts a minimum value near the Dirac point, which is consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:Graphene has shown promising perspectives in optical active components due to the large active-control of its permittivity-variation. This paper systematically reviews the recent developments of graphene-based optical modulators, including material property, single-layer , multi-layer , few-layer graphene-based modulators and corresponding figure-of-merits.The results showed graphene is an excellent material for enhancing silicons weak modulation capability after it is integrated into the silicon platform, showing significant influence on optical interconnects in future integrated optoelectronic circuits.
Highly Efficient Graphene-Based Optical Modulator with Edge Plasmonic Effect

Abstract:We report a highly efficient graphene-based modulator by using an edge plasmonic effect in this paper. The modulation efficiency of the proposed modulator can be as large as 1.58 dB/μm, which is several times larger than that of previous reported modulators. By enhancing the gap plasmon mode and the edge plasmonic effect in a well-designed diagonal waveguide, a wedge-to-wedge SPP mode is strongly confined in both horizontal and vertical directions in terms of a small mode area (Aef /A0 <; 1/1000), which significantly improves the light-graphene interaction. A large modulation efficiency of 4.05 dB/μm has been obtained after geometry optimization, which is the best values reported in our knowledge. The physical reason for the improvement is explored. We find the sharpness of the waveguide edges has strong impact on the field enhancement and modulation efficiency. Geometry optimization is made to further investigate the enhancement mechanisms and modulation capacities. Our results may promote the development of active nanophotonic devices incorporating two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:We report a theoretical study showing that by utilizing the illumination of an external laser, the Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPP) signals on the graphene sheet can be modulated in the sub-micron scale. The SPP wave can propagate along the graphene in the middle infrared range when the graphene is properly doped. Graphene's carrier density can be modified by a visible laser when the graphene sheet is exfoliated on the hydrophilic SiO2/Si substrate, which yields an all-optical way to control the graphene's doping level. Consequently, the external laser beam can control the propagation of the graphene SPP between the ON and OFF status. This all-optical modulation effect is still obvious when the spot size of the external laser is reduced to 400 nm while the modulation depth is as high as 114.7 dB/μm.

Abstract:Electromagnetic local density of states (ELDOS) counts the number of electromagnetic modes at a spatial point where a particle (atom, molecule, and quantum dot) spontaneously emits electromagnetic waves. ELDOS can be interpreted as a density of vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields. Moreover, ELDOS is essential to control spontaneous decay rate (SDR) of particles; and thus plays a critical role in modern optical and quantum devices. Having a great degree of freedom to tune permittivity, graphene is an emerging building block to manipulate the ELDOS. In this work, we study SDR of a particle near a metallic split-ring resonator, which is embedded in a multilayered substrate incorporating a graphene layer. Analyzing ELDOS in such a complex multilayered system is not only computationally challenging but also highly important to practical devices. First, dispersion relations of graphene plasmonics and metallic plasmonics are comparatively studied. From our investigations, graphene offers several flexible tuning routes to control SDR, which highly depends on the chemical potential of graphene sheet and the position and polarization of particle. Then, considering graphene plasmonics is excited at infrared regime, we carefully design a metallic split-ring resonating around the same frequency range. Consequently, this design allows a mutual interaction between the graphene sheet and split-ring. To reduce the computational burden, boundary element method in conjugation with a multilayered medium Green's function is adopted. The multilayered medium Green's function automatically includes the information of the ultrathin graphene. Therefore, only the split-ring scatterer is meshed. Blue-shifted and splitting resonance peaks are theoretically observed, which suggests a strong mode coupling between the graphene and split-ring. Furthermore, the mode coupling has a switch on-off feature via electrostatically doping the graphene sheet. This work is fundamentally important to dynamically tune ELDOS and SDR in complex devices.
