Abstract:Core/shell CdSe-ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with a peak emission wavelength of 618 nm and size of ~ 5.5 nm were synthesized by thermal deposition approach. High photoluminescence efficiency with a quantum yield of more than 48% has been achieved. Red-shift of a peak emission wavelength from 532 to 568 nm was realized by doping Gd3+ ions into the YAG : Ce3+ to substitute some Y3+ ions. To compensate the poor color rendering index (CRI) of the YAG : Ce-based white light-emitting diode (LED) due to the lack of red spectral component, CdSe-ZnS QDs were blended into YAG : Ce3+ , Gd3+ phosphors. Prominent spectral evolution has been achieved by increasing the content of QDs. White LED combining a blue LED with the blends of phosphor and QDs with a weight ratio of 1:1, has been demonstrated with an improved CRI value of 90.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) have become important materials for white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to their high stability, low cost and environmentally friendly nature. Here, blue carbon dots (B-CDs) were successfully prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method using theophylline and NaOH as raw materials. B-CDs were compounded with polyacrylamide (PAM), starch and chitosan (CTS) to make bright B-CD-based phosphors, respectively. Three different matrixes of B-CD-based phosphors were used to prepare WLEDs under UV chip excitation. The results show that the WLED prepared with the B-CDs/PAM phosphor exhibits the best performance. Compared to B-CDs, the fluorescence emission of the B-CDs/PAM phosphor is significantly enhanced and the quantum yield increases from 5.06% to 78.50% due to the inhibition of the non-radiative leap process by the matrix. The prepared WLED exhibits white light with colour coordinates of (0.3338, 0.3466), a correlated colour temperature (CCT) of 5442 K and a colour rendering index (CRI) of 98.3. Such a high CRI fully reflects the true colour of the object and has great potential for indoor lighting devices to protect the human eye and relieve eye strain.

Abstract:A blue-emitting phosphor, BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ (BAM) and a yellow–orange phosphor, Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ were prepared by the solid-state reaction. Excitation and emission spectra results showed that BAM and Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ can be efficiently excited by near-ultraviolet (n-UV)–visible light from 250 to 440nm. The effects of the doped-Eu2+ concentration in BAM and Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5:Eu2+ on the photoluminescence were investigated in detail. White light-emitting diodes (LED) was obtained by combining n-UV LED chip (GaN-based 380nm emitting) with BaMgAl10O17:0.09Eu2+ and 0.1Ba2+-codoped Sr3SiO5: 0.2Eu2+ phosphors with the characteristic of color-rendering index of 86, CIE chromaticity coordinates (x,y) of (0.3216,0.3096), and color temperature Tc of 5700K. As the current increases, the relative intensity simultaneously increases. The CIE chromaticity coordinates (x,y) of the white LED tends to decrease. The correlated color temperature Tc increases from 4100 to 7500K and the color-rendering index Ra increases from 82 to 87 simultaneously.

Abstract:A new kind of carbon dots based phosphor is developed for light emitting diodes (LED) by adsorbing carbon dots to starch particles. The bonding mechanism is based on hydrogen bonding of surface functional groups of carbon dots and starch particles. Aggregation-induced quenching is avoided and the thermal stability of the carbon dots phosphor is enhanced. The carbon dots phosphor is used as color convert material for white LED devices. The white LED device fabricated has an ultra-high color rendering index of 93.9, almost pure white CIE coordinate at (0.332, 0.336) and moderate CCT at 5498 K. The photoluminescence intensity (PL) under constant temperature and alternative condition is both tested to study the thermal stability of the phosphor. The PL intensity shows no obvious change after 3 days of aging; only 4% of PL loss after 10 cycles of 25 °C /85 °C alternation. Based on its good PL properties and thermal stability, this carbon dots phosphor has great potential for white LED lighting.

Abstract:White light emitting diodes (WLEDs) have attracted the attention of numerous scholars because of its high photoelectric conversion efficiency, low energy consumption and high reliability. They are known as the new generation of lighting energy in the twenty first century. Currently, the most common WLEDs are combined by blue LED chip and ce-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG: Ce3+) yellow phosphors. The advantages are simple production, low cost and high luminous efficiency. However, WLEDs made of blue LED chip and yellow phosphors lacks red spectrum and exhibits luminescence, and its color rendering index (CRI) is low, usually only 70. At the same time, quantum dots (QDs) are considered to be the most potential materials for WLEDs color conversion layers due to their wide excitation spectrum, narrow emission spectrum, adjustable band gap and high quantum yield. In this paper, we fabricated green graphene QDs (GQDs) and red GQDs, measured and analyzed their morphology, structure and photoluminescence. The green GQDs, red GQDs and yellow phosphors were used to fabricate the WLEDs. The produced WLEDs showed excellent optical performance and working performance, among which Commission International de L 'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are (0.3332, 0.3359), and the correlated color temperature (CCT) is 5464 K (driving current is 30 mA). Electroluminescence (EL) spectra of the device at different currents were also measured.

Abstract:An ultrabroad-band solid white emission from carbon quantum dot aggregation with a full width at half maximum over 200 nm throughout the entire visible light window and, even better, with a sufficient red component is first reported. UV pumped WLEDs are fabricated by integrating phosphors onto a UV-LED chip, and they show favorable warm white light characteristics with CIE coordinates of (0.42, 0.38) and a 91 high color rendering index.

Abstract:Exploration of solid-state efficient red emissive carbon dots (CDs) phosphors is strongly desired for the development of high performance CDs-based white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In this work, enhanced red emissive CDs-based phosphors with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 25% were prepared by embedding red emissive CDs (PLQYs of 23%) into polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Because of the protection of PVP, the phosphors could preserve strong luminescence under long-term UV excitation or being mixed with conventional packaging materials. By applying the red emissive phosphors as the color conversion layer, WLEDs with high color rendering index of 92 and color coordinate of (0.33, 0.33) are fabricated.

Abstract:Multicolor carbon dots (CDs) with compatible physical and chemical properties have tremendous potential applications in full-color display and photoelectric devices. In this work, red, green, and blue-emissive CDs (R-, G-, and B-CDs) were synthesized from o-, m-, and p-phenylenediamine under identical reactions for the first time. Mechanism exploration has shown that the photoluminescence of G- and B-CDs was dominantly core-state emissions while that of R-CDs was also heavily influenced by surface-state emissions. Superior WLEDs were fabricated exploiting the three CDs as compositing white phosphors, emitting warm white light with a correlated color temperature of 3248 K, CIE coordinates of (0.41, 0.38), and a high color rendering index value of 93.2, surpassing most phenylenediamine-derived CDs WLEDs. Most importantly, the WLEDs also demonstrated high stabilities under different working conditions and environments, highlighting their practicality.

Abstract:In this work, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of yellow emitting graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The as prepared GQDs were fixed in polymer-silica hybrid matrix, deposited on InGaN blue chip and formed as transparent flexible color conversion layer of white light emitting diodes (WLED). The properties of GQDs and devices were also investigated, and we found the GQDs exhibit stable fluorescence in the ethanol solution. The as prepared GQDs WLED shows extremely high color rendering index (CRI) reaching up to 92. And in this work we realized the correlated color temperature (CCT) tunable (from 3200K to 9200K) by adjusting the thickness of GQDs color conversion layer or the concentration of GQDs solution. The color coordinates of WLEDs distribute close to the Planckian locus. These results indicate that the GQDs might be a promising candidate as yellow-emitting phosphor for white LEDs.

Abstract:High‐performance carbon quantum dots‐based white light‐emitting diodes with impressive high color rendering index of 94.33 are prepared by well‐designed binary host‐induced exciplex host structure. The resulting devices exhibited Comission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.34, 0.32) and a Lmax of 2375.5 cd m−2. White light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) with high color‐rendering index (CRI, >90) are important for backlight displays and solid‐state lighting applications. Although the well‐developed colloidal quantum dots (QDs) based on heavy metals such as cadmium and lead are promising candidates for WLEDs, the low CRI still remains a significant limitation. In addition, the severe toxicity of heavy metals greatly limits their widespread use. Herein, the study demonstrates low‐cost and environmentally friendly carbon quantum dots (CQDs)‐based WLEDs that exhibit a high CRI of 94.33, surpassing that of conventional cadmium/lead‐containing QD‐based WLEDs. This achievement is attained through the employment of a binary host‐induced exciplex strategy. The high hole/electron mobility and suitable energy levels of the donor and acceptor give rise to a broadband orange–yellow emission stemming from the exciplex. As the host, the binary exciplex is capable of contributing blue and orange–yellow emission components while efficiently mitigating the aggregation‐induced quenching of CQDs. Meanwhile, CQDs effectively address the deep‐red emission gap, enabling the realization of CQDs‐based WLEDs with high CRI. These WLEDs also exhibit a remarkably low turn‐on voltage of 2.8 V, a maximum luminance exceeding 2000 cd m−2, a correlated color temperature of 4976 K, and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.34, 0.32).

Abstract:This article presents a pre‐crystallization‐tuned direct calcination method to prepare hundred‐gram scale red‐emissive carbon dots (C‐dots). The C‐dots are dispersed in microcrystalline cellulose as red phosphor. Efficient energy transfer between the red phosphor and commercial yellow Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG) fluorescent powder renders the fabrication of warm white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) with an extremely high color‐rendering index of 97. In this study, pre‐crystallization‐controlled, solid‐state preparation of red carbon dots (C‐dots) from o‐phenylenediamine on a hectogram scale with a 94% yield is reported. Highly efficient red phosphor (C‐dots@MCC) is obtained by dispersing the C‐dots in microcrystalline cellulose, which matched extremely well with the commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG) phosphor. White light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) fabricated from the two phosphors emitted warm white light with a correlated color temperature of 3845 K, CIE color coordinates of (0.38, 0.37), and an extremely high color rendering index (CRI) of 95, outperforming all the reported YAG‐derived WLEDs. Furthermore, the CRI value of the WLED can be further increased to 97 after fine‐tuning, which is the highest CRI for WLEDs of any C‐dots derived devices reported so far. The superior performance of the WLED is attributed to a delicate energy transfer between YAG and C‐dots@MCC. Most importantly, the WLED maintained excellent stabilities under varied currents, working durations, moistures, and temperatures.

Abstract:The white‐light‐emitting carbon dots are synthesized by a one‐step solvothermal method of trimellitic acid and o‐phenylenediamine, which consists of four types of carbon dots emitting blue, green, yellow, and red light. Five kinds of light‐emitting diodes can be prepared using the above carbon dots, among which the color rendering index of white light‐emitting diode is as high as 97. White‐light‐emitting carbon dots (WCDs) show innate advantages as phosphors in white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs). For WLEDs, the color rendering index (CRI) is the most important metric to evaluate its performance. Herein, WCDs are prepared by a facile one‐step solvothermal reaction of trimellitic acid and o‐phenylenediamine. It consists of four CDs identified by column chromatography as blue, green, yellow, red, and thus white light is a superposition of these four types of light. The mixture of the four CDs undergoes Förster resonance energy transfer to induce the generation of white light. The photoluminescence of WCDs originates from the synergistic effect of carbon core and surface states. Thereinto, the carbon core states dominate in RCDs, and the increase of amide contents and degree of conjugation promote the redshift of the emission spectra, which is further confirmed by theoretical calculations. In addition, a high CRI of 97 is achieved when the WCDs are used as phosphors to fabricate WLEDs, which is almost the highest value up to now. The multicolor LEDs can also be fabricated by using the four multicolor CDs as phosphors, respectively. This work provides a novel approach to explore the rapid preparation of low‐cost, high‐performance WCDs and CDs‐based WLEDs.

Abstract:A brand‐new approach is shown for the design of white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) with a simple device‐to‐device transform based on monochromatic carbon dots (CDs). In this work, the WLEDs‐based on the blue fluorescent CDs achieve the in situ generation of bright white light emission in the device, originating from the oxidation of functional groups involving S element in CDs caused by strong electrical treatment. Currently, the fabrication of white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) strongly depends on white fluorescent emission materials. The conventional method, which is a direct way from the designed fluorescent emission material to the device, is regarded as a fundamental principle in this field. Here, a brand‐new approach is shown for the design of WLEDs with a simple device‐to‐device transform based on monochromatic carbon dots (CDs). In this work, the WLEDs based on the blue fluorescent CDs achieve the in situ generation of bright white light emission in the device, originating from the oxidation of functional groups involving S element in CDs caused by strong electrical treatment. These CDs‐based WLEDs possess the luminance of 533 cd m−2, Commission Internationale d'Eclairage coordinates located at (0.38, 0.38), a correlated color temperature of 4072 K, and a color render index up to 95. This work opens a brand‐new gate for achieving high‐purity and bright WLEDs through the strategy of transforming from device to device rather than material to device.

High Performance Non-Doped Blue-Hazard-free Hybrid White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Stable High Color Rendering Index and Low Efficiency Roll-off

Abstract:White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), for display and lighting applications, combine features such as high performance, high color quality, low efficiency roll-off and blue-hazard-free are extremely important. In this study, we manufactured a highly efficient bluish-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) OLED. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (PE), and current efficiency (CE) were 16.0%, 46.2 lm/W, and 45.9 cd/A, respectively. Next, a non-doped and blue-hazard-free hybrid WOLED was prepared by employing reasonably inserting several red and yellow ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between the bluish-green TADF emitters. The device showed a maximum EQE of 18.7% and a low EQE roll-off of 7%. At 1000 cd/m(2), a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87 and a low correlated color temperature (CCT) of 2759 were obtained. The result showed that bluish-green TADF material has potential applications in healthy WOLEDs without blue-hazard. Also, the strategy of inserting several long-wavelength ultra-thin phosphorescent emitters in between bluish-green TADF emitters with bipolar transport characteristic, which can reduce efficiency roll-off and enhance device electroluminescence efficiency, was demonstrated.
Self‐Quenching‐Resistant Red Emissive Carbon Dots with High Stability for Warm White Light‐Emitting Diodes with a High Color Rendering Index

Abstract:Due to the excellent characteristics of energy‐saving, environmentally friendly and long‐life, the solid‐state lighting based on white light‐emitting diodes (WLEDs) is an emerging technology to replace traditional lighting solutions. However, the lack of red component of the most established method for fabricating commercial WLEDs results in high correlated color temperature (CCT) and low color rendering index (CRI). Herein, red‐emitting carbon dots (R‐CDs) with self‐quenching‐resistant property are synthesized using melamine and dithiosalicylic acid as precursors. In addition, R‐CDs exhibit high thermal and photostability under high temperature and strong blue light irradiation. On the basis of the unique features of R‐CDs, a WLED is fabricated by combining a blue‐LED chip with commercial Ce3+:Y3Al5O12 and R‐CDs phosphors, which exhibits warm white light with a color coordinate of (0.41, 0.38), a high CRI of 92.7 and a CCT of 3827 K. Besides, the WLED exhibits good optical stability upon the increase of drive current from 20 to 100 mA. The results suggest R‐CDs can be used as a color converter to fabricate high‐quality warm WLEDs.

Multicolor and Single-Component White Light-Emitting Carbon Dots from a Single Precursor for Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The preparation of multicolor and white light-emitting carbon dots (CDs) is of both significant importance and challenging for their applications as white phosphors for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this report, a facile reaction system that is capable of preparing both multicolor and white light-emitting CDs was disclosed. In this system, three CDs emitting yellow, red, and green lights were prepared, and monochromatic LEDs were constructed using these multicolor CDs. Most importantly, single-component white light-emitting CDs with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.33) were also prepared. The white light-emitting CDs were applied as single-component white phosphors for the fabrication of white LEDs. The white LEDs constructed demonstrated excellent performance, emitting warm white light (CCT = 3723 K) with CIE coordinates of (0.39, 0.37) and an extremely high color-rendering index of 91.5, which should find favorable applications for indoor illumination.

Abstract:White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) were fabricated by employing a combination of a commercial yellow emission Ce3+-doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG:Ce)-based phosphor and all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots pumped with blue LED chip. Perovskite quantum dot solution was used as the color conversion layer with liquid-type structure. Red-emitting materials based on cesium lead halide (CsPb(X)3) perovskite quantum dots were introduced to generate WLEDs with high efficacy and high color rendering index through compensating the red emission of the YAG:Ce phosphor-based commercialized WLEDs. The experimental results suggested that the luminous efficiency and color rendering index of the as-prepared WLED device could reach up to 84.7 lm/W and 89, respectively. The characteristics of those devices including correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), and color coordinates were observed under different forward currents. The as-fabricated warm WLEDs showed excellent color stability against the increasing current, while the color coordinates shifted slightly from (0.3837, 0.3635) at 20 mA to (0.3772, 0.3592) at 120 mA and color temperature tuned from 3803 to 3953 K.
