Abstract:Plasmonic chirality has attracted extensive attention due to its tunable and extremely large optical activity response. The chirality of multiparticles has been underexplored due to their complex interactions. Here, we experimentally manipulate gold nanoparticles of different sizes to form a chiral structure with an atomic force microscope and measure its scattering spectrum using dark-field microscopy. Meanwhile, Mie theory is applied to deeply explore the contribution of the multipole moments to the chirality. The chiral tetramer exhibits a distinct chiral response, which is consistent with Mie calculations. We also find that both the dipole and quadrupole moments of the tetramer contribute greatly to the chirality. In addition, there is a significant enhancement of the electric field and chiral field in the gaps between gold particles, which is especially useful in the measurement of the Raman optical activity and the detection of trace chiral molecules.
