Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) require thermal management in order to operate safely and effectively. This paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) approach for the thermal management of a PEMFC combined heat and power (PEMFC-CHP) system to regulate the temperatures of a PEMFC stack and thermal storage tank (TST). First, a 1.2-kW PEMFC-CHP system is designed and a control-oriented thermal model of the system is established. The cooling water and air mass flow rates are then used as control variables to develop an MPC controller. Finally, the effectiveness of the MPC controller is evaluated under a typical household load and contrasted with that of a proportional integral differential (PID) controller. The temperature fluctuation of the PEMFC stack is less than 0.008 degrees C with a maximal relative error (MRE) of 0.013%, and the MRE of the TST temperature in summer is 0.003%. The MPC method provides a smaller overshoot and shorter settling time, and the temperature fluctuations are noticeably lessened compared with those of the PID controller. These results show that the PEMFC-CHP system can satisfy both the electrical and thermal demands of a household and that the proposed MPC controller is superior to a PID controller.
