Abstract:This work revealed the influences of graphene oxide (GO) sheet size on the curing kinetics and thermal stability of epoxy resins. A series of GO/epoxy nanocomposites were prepared by the incorporation of three different sized GO sheets, namely GO-1, GO-2 and GO-3, the average size of which was 10.79 μm, 1.72 μm and 0.70 μm, respectively. The morphologies of the nanocomposites were observed by field emission gun scanning electron microscope. The dispersion quality of each sized GO was comparable in the epoxy matrix. The curing kinetics was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and analyzed based on kinetics model. Addition of a small amount of GO (0.1 wt%) exhibited strong catalytic effect on the curing reaction of epoxy resin. The activation energy was reduced by 18.9%, 28.8% and 14.6% with addition of GO-1, GO-2 and GO-3, respectively. GO-2 with medium size (1.72 μm) showed the most effective catalysis on the cure. The thermal stability of the cured resins was evaluated based on thermogravimetric analysis. GO/epoxy nanocomposites showed improved thermal stability in the range of 420 °C–500 °C, compared with the pure resin. A ∼ 4% more residue was obtained in each of the incorporated system. The variations of GO sheet size did not influence the enhancement effect on the thermal stability.

Abstract:The influence of graphene oxides (GOs) on the cure behavior and thermal stability of a tetrafunctional tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane cured with 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone was investigated by using dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dynamic DSC results showed that the initial reaction temperature and exothermal peak temperature decreased with the increase of GO contents. Furthermore, the addition of GO increased the enthalpy of epoxy cure reaction. Results from activation energy method showed that activation energies of GO/epoxy nanocomposites greatly decreased with the GO content in the latter stage, indicating that GOs significantly hindered the occurrence of vitrification. The oxygen functionalities, such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, on the surface of GOs acted as catalysts and facilitated the curing reaction and the catalytic effect increased with the GO contents. TGA results revealed that the addition of GOs decreased the thermal stability of epoxy.

Abstract:With self-made GO(graphene oxide) as modifier of BCE(bisphenol A cyanate ester),a corresponding modified resin was prepared.The influences of GO on curing kinetics of BCE were investigated by non-isothermal DSC(differential scanning calorimetry),Kissinger,Crane and heating speed-temperature(β-T) extrapolation.The curing process conditions and kinetic parameters of pure BCE and GO/BCE systems were determined.The results showed that the gelation,curing and post-processing temperatures were 180.0,201.0,221.1 ℃ for pure BCE system and 158.8,195.7,214.3 ℃ for GO/BCE system respectively.The activation energies were 102.38 kJ/mol for pure GO system and 81.68 kJ/mol for GO/BCE system respectively.The reaction orders were 0.93 for pure GO system and 0.91 for GO/BCE system respectively.

Abstract:In order to broaden the selectivity of graphite nanosheet additives on epoxy resin-based coatings and verify the size effect, this work aims to dope graphite nanosheets of different sizes into the three-dimensional structure produced by cross-linking and curing epoxy resin and polyamide resin. In addition, a micro-nano level secondary structure and a surface with special roughness are constructed to obtain the composite epoxy hydrophobic coating. The influence of the size effect of graphite nanosheets on the hydrophobic performance and corrosion resistance of the coating is summarized as well. Among them, the optimized doping size (2.2 μm) of graphite nanosheets in the epoxy coating showed the largest impedance arc of 2.58 × 108 Ω cm2, which could form an excellent nano-network covering the micropores to impede the diffusion of corrosive medium. Through simulation calculation analysis, we also found that the edge site of graphene is more effective in capturing H2O and O2; therefore, a smaller size of graphene with a large edge can be more favorable. This work will be used as a reference for the industrial application of graphite anti-corrosive coating.

Abstract:Functional graphite oxide (DGO) with amine-rich surface was successfully prepared through the amidation reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and Raman spectra. The effects of functional graphite oxide on the curing kinetics of epoxy (EP) were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The curing kinetic parameters of EP, EP/graphite oxide (GO) and EP/functional graphite oxide were obtained. There was not much difference in total heat of reaction Delta H and peak temperature T-p with the incorporation of GO or DGO. However, the activation energy, E-a, and the overall order of reaction m + n were enhanced. Comprehensive kinetic analyses indicated that the incorporation of GO sheets brought in an effect of inhibition on curing process. While the inhibition effect weaken when the GO is modified with aminerich surface. The possible curing mechanism and reaction pathways were proposed to provide a reasonable explanation. Abstract:The physical and mechanical properties of graphene-reinforced epoxy (epoxy/graphene) in hygrothermal environment need to be comprehensively understood. This is because it is necessary to predict the durability of epoxy/graphene when epoxy/graphene is used in an aggressive environment with high humidity and high temperature. Based on the molecular dynamics method, the influences of water content (2, 4 and 6%) and temperature (298,333 and 368 K) on the physical and tensile properties of epoxy/graphene were studied in this research. The results showed that after the addition of graphene, the free volume fraction of epoxy and the diffusion coefficient of water molecules in the epoxy decreased, and the density, tensile strength and deformation performance of epoxy increased. In the hygrothermal environment, the tensile strength degradation rate of epoxy/graphene was lower than that of pure epoxy. The failure mechanism and mechanical response of epoxy/graphene during the tensile process in the nanoscale were revealed. The research results provide a reference for the design and performance optimization of epoxy/graphene composites in a hygrothermal environment.

Abstract:In this paper, nano-graphene oxide (GO) particles are applied to modify the epoxy resin, and the surface charge characteristics of the prepared composites under various temperatures are investigated. Based on the surface potential decay behaviors, trap energy level distribution of the neat epoxy resin and graphene oxide/epoxy resin composite is calculated. Obtained results show that the introduction of GO increases the shallower trap density as well as decreases the deeper trap density at the same temperature. With the increase of temperature, the deep trap density is decreased while the shallow trap density is enhanced. The introduction of graphene oxide results in the increase of shallower trap density, and which makes the temperature coefficient of conductivity of epoxy/graphene oxide nanocomposite is reduced.

Abstract:To study the effects of graphene oxide (GO) dimension on the mechanical and dielectric performance of epoxy resin (EP), two kinds of GO with different dimensions were selected and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results showed that the two kinds of GO had similar chemical structure, but different average particle sizes of 190.1 nm (SGO) and 1510 nm (MGO), respectively. The mechanical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, and dielectric properties of the EP/GO composites are analyzed using electronic universal testing machine, Rockwell hardness tester, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and broadband dielectric impedance relaxation spectrometer. Results revealed that the GO dimension plays important role in determining the dispersion of the filler in EP matrix, and further determines the mechanical properties and dielectric performance of the composites. EP/SGO with better dispersion of GO in the EP matrix exhibits better mechanical properties, higher glass transition temperature, higher dielectric constant. Related mechanism has been proposed.

Abstract:A kind of graphene oxide (GO) modified sizing agent was used to improve the interfacial properties of carbon fibers/epoxy composites. The surface topography of carbon fibers was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface compositions of carbon fibers were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the interfacial properties of composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). The results show that the existence of GO increases the content of reactive functional groups on carbon fiber surface. Thus it enhances the interfacial properties of carbon fibers/epoxy composites. When GO loading in sizing agents is 1 wt%, the ILSS value of composite reaches to 96.2 MPa, which is increased by 27.2% while comparing with unsized carbon fiber composites. Furthermore, the ILSS of composites after aging is also increased significantly with GO modified sizing agents.
Influence of size of graphene oxide on interfacial properties of carbon fiber/epoxy resin under damp and heat conditions

Abstract:Two different sizes of graphene oxide (GO) produced by the Hummers method had been incorporated into epoxy resins and used to fabricate GO modified carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (GO/CF/EP) by compression molding method, and the composite material was processed under damp and heat conditions. The modification effects of dry and wet composite materials were investigated through interlayer shear performance, dynamic thermomechanical properties and microscopic morphology. The results indicate that GO has a good improvement on the interlaminar shear strength and glass transition temperature of composite materials. In the dry state at room temperature, two sizes of GO have basically the same improvement effect on the interlaminar shear strength of the composite. With the increase of GO content, the small size of GO makes the hygrothermal interlaminar shear strength of composites decrease faster. When the GO content is 0.1%(mass fraction, the same as below), the improvement of the interlaminar shear performance of the composite material is better, however, the glass transition temperature of the composite material is better when the GO content is 0.2%. With the increase of GO content, the exothermic peak of the GO-EP composite resin matrix shifts to low temperature, and the small size of GO shortens the gel time of the composite resin. The micro-morphology analysis shows the presence of GO is beneficial for increasing the crack propagation path during the failure of composite material, thereby more conducive to the dissipate the crack tip energy by the material.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the thermal and mechanical properties of aminated graphene (AG)/epoxy nanocomposites connected by covalent bond using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The effects of crosslinking degree, mass fraction and functionalized graphene (FG) type on AG/epoxy nanocomposites are considered. The elasticity modulus (E), the glass transition temperature (Tg), the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the interfacial energy (Eint) are also investigated. The MD simulation results indicate that, when the mass fraction of AG is between 1.2% and 3.1% and crosslinking degree reaches about 70%, the E, Tg, Eint and CTE of AG/epoxy nanocomposites are significantly improved compared with those of pure epoxy and graphene/epoxy nanocomposites. The reason is that AG not only possesses some excellent thermodynamic properties of graphene, but also has the function of curing agent to crosslink with epoxy monomer to form the carbon-nitrogen (C–N) covalent bond. A better interfacial interaction between nanoparticles and epoxy is essential in enhancing the thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposite materials, which will provide a microscopic theoretical basis for the study of epoxy nanocomposites.

Abstract:Composites based on epoxy/graphene oxide (GO) and epoxy/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) were investigated for thermal-mechanical performance focusing on the effects of the chemical groups present on nanoadditive-enhanced surfaces. GO and rGO obtained in the present study have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) demonstrating that materials with different oxidation degrees have been obtained. Thereafter, GO/epoxy and rGO/epoxy nanocomposites were successfully prepared and thoroughly characterized by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A significant increase in the glass transition temperature was found in comparison with the neat epoxy. The presence of functional groups on the graphene surface leads to chemical interactions between these functional groups on GO and rGO surfaces with the epoxy, contributing to the possible formation of covalent bonds between GO and rGO with the matrix. The presence of oxidation groups on GO also contributes to an improved exfoliation, intercalation, and distribution of the GO sheets in the composites with respect to the rGO based composites.

Isothermal Curing Behaviors of Epoxy/Graphite Oxides Nanocomposites

Abstract:The cure kinetics of N,N,N',N'-tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS) nanocomposites filled with graphite oxide (GO) was studied by isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore, the functional groups on the surface of GO and their influence on the cure behaviors of TGDDM/DDS/GO nanocomposites were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the thermal stabilities of the neat graphite and GO were compared by thermalgravitimetric analysis (TGA). The XPS, FT-IR and TGA results showed that there were large numbers of polar functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl and cyclic epoxide groups on the surface of GO,which effected the cure behaviors of TGDDM/DDS/GO nanocomposites. The experimental data of the isothermal DSC for both the neat TGDDM/DDS system and its GO nanocomposites showed an autocatalytic behavior. Furthermore, with the increase of GO contents, the time to the maximum cure rate decreased whereas the initial cure rate increased with the increase of GO contents, which indicated that GO catalyzed the cure reaction of epoxy. The apparent activation energy for the initial stage of the reaction (E-1) of TGDDM/DDS/GO nanocomposites obtained by Kamal ' s model decreased first and then increased with the increase of GO contents, while the apparent activation energy for the reaction after the initial autocatalytic stage (E-2) slight decreased with the increase of GO contents. Good agreement between the experimental data and the autocatalytic model with the modified diffusion factor in the later stage of cure was found over the whole curing temperature range for all of the neat epoxy resin and its nanocomposites with GO. The results showed that the incorporation of GO accelerated the cure reaction of the TGDDM/DDS system at lower GO content due to the interaction between the functional groups on the surface of GO and the epoxy resin.

Abstract:The curing kinetics of zinc oxide/epoxy resin(ZnO/EP) nanocomposites was investigated by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).The activation energy(?E) and frequency factor(A) were calculated using Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods while the reaction order(n) was calculated by Crane equation.The results showed that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles led to increasing theoretical gelling temperature but decreasing theoretical curing temperature;also,the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles decreased the activation energy and this effect became weaker as curing process went on further;moreover,the addition of ZnO nanoparticles did not bring about the change of reaction order.Consequently,it was concluded that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles had no obvious effect on the curing reaction mechanism while promoted the curing reaction.

Abstract:Two different sizes of graphene oxide/poly(lactic acid) composites were prepared by the solution flocculation method, and the effect of the size effect of graphene oxide on the crystallization, barrier, and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) was investigated by various characterization methods. The results of the crystallization behavior test show that the size change of graphene oxide has little effect on the nucleation effect of poly(lactic acid). Increasing the size of graphene oxide can promote the crystal growth, so as to improve the crystallization ability of poly(lactic acid). The test results of mechanical properties and barrier properties show that increasing the size of graphene oxide can provide a larger interfacial surface area and transmit stress more effectively, which can greatly improve the modulus of poly(lactic acid). At the same time, because of this, the diffusion path of gas molecules in poly(lactic acid) can be longer and more tortuous, so as to improve the barrier performance of poly(lactic acid).

Abstract:Among all the carbon fillers, graphene has attracted tremendous research interest for its special two-dimensional and single-atom-thick structure. High electrical, mechanical and optical properties of graphene have been proved. By adding graphene as filler into polymer, it is possible to achieve a new composite with unique physical, electrical and thermal properties. In this paper, epoxy/graphene composites with or without silane coupling agent surface modification have been prepared using sol-gel method. Researches have proved that graphene can improve the properties of composite at a very low loading content. The content of graphene in this paper was selected as 0.1wt%. Dispersion of graphene in epoxy was observed by polarizing optical microscope (POM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results proved that after surface modification, graphene was dispersed better in epoxy. Thermal properties of epoxy were obtained by means of differential scanning calorimetry tests (DSC). Results showed that even with very low content of graphene, the glass-transition temperature of composite increased, indicating better thermal properties. Conductivity in various electric fields of composites and dc surface flashover voltages were obtained, showing that though the surface conductivity of composite increased, surface flashover properties didn't decrease. Graphene/epoxy composites with excellent properties were expected to be a potential candidate for smaller insulation system.
